Warsaw to Krakow by private car is about 296 km (184 mi) from Śródmieście to Krakow's Main Square, roughly 3 hours 25 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate, and longer with traffic around both cities. Elly8.net quotes the drive door to door through the web booker at a fixed, all-in price per vehicle, so the figure you accept is the figure you pay, whether the road is clear or not.
Rides from Warsaw are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. The fast train between the two cities is good, and for many travellers it is the right answer. This guide explains who should take the train, who should take a car, and what a well-planned drive looks like, including stops that turn a transfer into a day worth remembering.
How long is the drive from Warsaw to Krakow?
About 296 km (184 mi), roughly 3 hours 25 minutes on a clear road from central Warsaw to central Krakow, by our routed estimate. Allow four hours or more door to door with city traffic at each end, and five to six hours if you stop for lunch and a visit on the way.
All distances and times in this post are routed estimates calculated with the public OSRM routing service, on a clear road, between city-centre points. They do not include the rush hour on the way out of Warsaw, roadworks, or summer weekend traffic, and the chauffeur will adjust the route on the day. The direct route runs south past Kielce, which puts the Royal Castle at Chęciny almost exactly on the way.

Train or car: the honest comparison
PKP Intercity runs direct express trains between Warszawa Centralna and Kraków Główny, both in the city centres, and the PKP Intercity site has the timetable and fares. For one or two people it is far cheaper than a private car, it runs centre to centre, and you can work on board. If you are a solo traveller or a couple with carry-on bags, staying near either main station, take the train. We would.
A private car is the better choice in four situations:
- Groups and families with luggage. Getting four or five people and their suitcases across Centralna, onto a train and through Kraków Główny is real work. A Business SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, per the Elly8.net fleet specifications, door to door.
- Executives who need privacy. A car is a place for confidential calls. For a board member or a client, the drive is three hours of uninterrupted working time with no one listening.
- A stop on the way. A factory or client site in central Poland, a castle, or a pilgrimage at Częstochowa: the train cannot do it in one journey.
- Awkward start or end points. A hotel outside the centre, Chopin or Modlin airport, a countryside address near Krakow: door to door removes two transfers and two stations.
Stop idea 1: Chęciny Royal Castle
The ruins of the Royal Castle in Chęciny stand on a hill above the small town of Chęciny near Kielce, and they sit almost exactly on the direct route: about 191 km (119 mi) from central Warsaw, roughly 2 hours 10 minutes, with about 106 km (66 mi) and 1 hour 20 minutes still to go to Krakow. That makes it the natural halfway stop. The castle publishes its opening hours and ticket prices on its official site, which has an English section.
Plan about an hour: the walk up from the car park, the towers, and the view across the countryside. Add lunch in Kielce or Chęciny and the drive becomes a five-hour journey that feels like a day out rather than a transfer.
Stop idea 2: Jasna Góra in Częstochowa
Jasna Góra in Częstochowa is the Marian sanctuary that is home to the miraculous image of Our Lady that pilgrims travel to see, with information for pilgrims on its official site. It is not on the direct route: via Częstochowa the whole journey is about 397 km (247 mi), roughly 4 hours 15 minutes of driving, so about 100 km and an hour more than going straight. Warsaw to Częstochowa is about 244 km (152 mi), around 2 hours 25 minutes, and Częstochowa to Krakow about 153 km (95 mi), around 1 hour 50 minutes.
For families with Polish roots and for anyone interested in the country's religious history, it is worth the extra hour. Allow at least an hour and a half at the sanctuary itself, and check its calendar before you go, since major feast days bring large crowds.
Stop idea 3: Wieliczka on arrival day
The Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and Wieliczka is only about 13 km (8 mi) from Krakow's Main Square, roughly 20 minutes. If you leave Warsaw early, the chauffeur can take you straight to the mine for an afternoon tour and on to your Krakow hotel afterwards, with the luggage locked in the car throughout. Tours are booked through the mine's own site, so reserve the tour first and fix the pickup time around it.
Then there is Krakow itself. The Historic Centre of Kraków, the former capital of Poland at the foot of the Royal Wawel Castle, has what UNESCO calls Europe's largest market square; much of the old town is pedestrian, and the chauffeur drops you at the nearest point a car may stop for your hotel.
The reverse trip: Krakow to Warsaw for a flight home
Many North American visitors fly into Warsaw and out of Warsaw, with Krakow in the middle of the trip, which makes the drive north on the last day the one that matters most. The same routed figures apply in reverse: about 296 km (184 mi) and roughly 3 hours 25 minutes on a clear road to central Warsaw, and slightly less to Chopin Airport, which sits on the southern side of the city. For a long-haul departure, our desk plans the pickup in Krakow with the drive time, a margin for traffic on the approach to Warsaw, and the airline's check-in advice added together, rather than the clear-road figure alone.
The advantage over the train on this leg is simple: there is no change at Warszawa Centralna with suitcases and no onward transfer to the terminal. The chauffeur drives from the hotel door in Krakow to the departures kerb at Chopin, and the luggage stays in the car the whole way. The UNESCO description of Krakow mentions the medieval district of Kazimierz with its ancient synagogues; if you are staying there or near Wawel, give us the hotel name and the chauffeur collects you at the nearest point a car may stop.
How the price works
Warsaw to Krakow is not on the Elly8.net published price list. It is quoted door to door through the web booker: enter the pickup address in Warsaw (or Chopin with your flight number), the drop-off in Krakow, the date and time, any stop you want, and the vehicle. You see a fixed price in US$ before you pay, all-in for the vehicle, including the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity; motorway tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Prices are per vehicle, never per person.
If you prefer to keep the car and chauffeur with you all day, for a long lunch or two stops, the full-day chauffeur from the Warsaw price list gives 8 hours at your disposal, from US$630 in a business sedan, US$810 in a business SUV, US$960 in a First Class SUV and US$1,035 in a First Class Sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter. A one-way journey to another city also has to account for the chauffeur's return, which is why the web booker is the right tool for the quote: it prices the actual route rather than a city package.
For reference, the Warsaw price list for shorter jobs: Chopin to Śródmieście from US$90 in a business sedan to US$235 in an Executive Sprinter, and hourly service from US$85 to US$170 an hour, with a 3-hour minimum. See the full panel on the Warsaw prices page.
Planning the day: our desk's checklist
- Start before the rush. Leaving central Warsaw before 7:00 or after 9:30 on a weekday avoids the worst of the outbound traffic.
- Decide the stops when you book. A stop changes the route and the time; the quote should include it.
- Pick the vehicle for the bags. A business sedan or First Class Sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 large bags. Four adults with suitcases need a Business SUV or First Class SUV.
- Child seats. Request them with the children's ages; the partner fits them before pickup.
- Hotel arrival in Krakow. Give us the hotel name. In the old town, cars stop at the nearest permitted point and the chauffeur helps with the luggage.
- Coming back? Book the return separately, or travel back by train and book a Warsaw airport transfer for your flight home.
Working on the road
For business travellers, the drive is part of the working day. Tell us when you book if you need a quiet car for calls, and choose a First Class Sedan or First Class SUV for the most comfortable cabin. The chauffeur will not interrupt a call, keeps the route updated with the desk, and can stop at a client site or a factory on the way if you give us the address in advance. Corporate accounts receive one monthly invoice for every journey, with fixed fares agreed per route, and NDAs are available on request; see corporate accounts.
Booking in three steps
