Vienna to Bratislava is about 80 km (50 mi) by road and roughly 1 hour on a clear road, by routed estimate from Vienna's Innere Stadt to Bratislava's old town, on the A4 Ost Autobahn and the A6 Nordost Autobahn across the Slovak border. By rail, ÖBB runs REX regional express trains twice an hour, taking about an hour, to Bratislava's main station or to Petržalka in the south of the city.
For a day trip by one or two people, the train is cheap, frequent and simple, and it is what we would suggest. A private driver is the better choice for families and groups with luggage, for a flight from Bratislava Airport, for a business day of meetings in both cities, and for a stop at the Roman city of Carnuntum on the way. One-way fixed prices are shown on the Elly8.net web booker, and chauffeurs by the hour in Vienna cost from US$85, with a 3-hour minimum.
How long does it take to get from Vienna to Bratislava?
By car, about 1 hour for 80 km (50 mi) on a clear road, by routed estimate, city centre to city centre. By train, ÖBB's REX services run twice an hour and take about one hour to Bratislava hlavná stanica or Petržalka. From Vienna Airport, the drive to Bratislava's old town is about 49 minutes.
| Route | Distance | Clear-road drive |

The train: REX twice an hour and the Bratislava Ticket
The train is good on this route, and it deserves the first look. According to ÖBB, REX trains run twice an hour between Vienna and Bratislava and take about one hour, and you can choose a connection to Bratislava hlavná stanica, the main station, or to Bratislava Petržalka in the south of the city.
ÖBB's Bratislava Ticket is designed for exactly this trip. It is valid on cross-border local transport for the journey from Vienna to Bratislava and back, and on its first day of validity it also works as a day ticket for public transport in Bratislava. ÖBB gives simple directions on: from the main station, bus 93 runs to Hodžovo námestie by the Presidential Palace and tram 1 to Poštová and the pedestrian old town; from Petržalka, buses 93 and 94 run to the Zochova stop near the centre.
For one or two travellers with a day bag, that is very hard to beat on price and simplicity. ÖBB's weekly and monthly versions of the ticket also suit people who commute between the two cities.
Main station or Petržalka?
The two Bratislava stations suit different plans. From Hlavná stanica, the main station, bus 93 and tram 1 run into the centre and to the Presidential Palace. Petržalka is in the southern part of the city, with buses 93 and 94 to the Zochova stop near the centre. Either way, allow time for the city connection on top of the hour on the train, and check which station your REX serves before you board. If you are travelling with heavy bags and arriving in Vienna by train at the end of the day, a chauffeur can meet you on the platform side at Wien Hauptbahnhof; see train station transfers.
Buses, the riverboat and Bratislava Airport
Buses. Vienna Airport's bus connections page lists several long-distance coach operators running from the airport to Bratislava, which helps travellers who land at VIE and are staying in Slovakia.
The riverboat. The Twin City Liner, a boat service on the Danube, links the two capitals on a published timetable. It is a pleasant way to arrive for a day trip; check the current departure point and timetable with the operator, and carry a valid travel document, which the operator says is absolutely necessary.
Bratislava Airport. Many travellers fly into or out of Bratislava Airport, Letisko M. R. Štefánika (BTS), about 1 hour 10 minutes from central Vienna by routed estimate. A private car is often the simplest way to make that connection with luggage, door to terminal, and it works in both directions: BTS to a Vienna hotel on arrival, or a Vienna hotel to BTS for a departure. The fixed price is on the web booker.
When a private car is the better choice
Groups and luggage. Elly8.net prices are per vehicle. A Business SUV or Van takes six passengers and six large bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve, so a family or a small group pays one fare instead of a ticket each and a taxi at each end.
Airport connections. Landing at VIE and staying in Bratislava, or the reverse with a flight from BTS, is a door-to-door job. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board, and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing covers a slow bag belt. See airport transfers and meet and greet.
A business day in two capitals. Companies with offices or clients in both cities often need a car that waits between meetings. Booked by the hour, five hours in a Business Sedan cost US$425, as arithmetic at the published rate of US$85 an hour; a full eight-hour day costs US$630, and the corporate roadshow day from US$765. See corporate car service and corporate accounts for monthly invoicing and NDAs on request.
A stop on the way. The motorway runs close to the Roman city of Carnuntum, and a car turns it into an easy stop with no change of trains.
Carnuntum: the stop between the capitals
About 40 minutes east of Vienna lies the Roman City of Carnuntum, part of the Danube Limes World Heritage site, where visitors see the remains of the Roman city alongside reconstructed buildings. From Carnuntum, Bratislava's old town is only about 28 minutes away, so a morning at the Roman site and an afternoon in Bratislava fits easily into a day, with roughly 2 hours 10 minutes of driving for the whole loop back to Vienna by routed estimate.
A pattern that works:
- 09:30, Vienna. Pickup at your hotel.
- About 10:10, Carnuntum. Two hours at the Roman city.
- About 12:40, Bratislava. Lunch in the old town, the castle and its gardens, and a walk.
- About 16:30, back to Vienna. Roughly an hour on the motorway, arriving around 17:30.
As arithmetic at the published hourly rate, an eight-hour day like this is the full-day chauffeur: US$630 in a Business Sedan, US$810 in a Business SUV and US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle.
What to see in Bratislava
ÖBB's own guide to the city picks out the colourful façades of the old town and the Presidential Palace, Bratislava Castle, with its history exhibits and baroque gardens with a view over the city, and the UFO observation tower above the Danube, with a restaurant 85 metres above the ground. Visit Bratislava, the city's tourist board, publishes the current events calendar and opening times; check them before you fix the date.
The old town is compact and best on foot, so the chauffeur drops you at the nearest point a car may stop and collects you at a time you agree.
An evening in Bratislava
Bratislava is close enough for dinner, a concert or an evening on the riverfront, and that is where the choice between train and car shifts. The REX timetable decides when you leave a train-based evening; a car decides nothing for you. With a private driver, the chauffeur waits while you eat and drives you back to your Vienna hotel door in about an hour, however late the evening runs.
For an evening like this, book by the hour: four hours in a Business Sedan cost US$340 and in a Business SUV US$440, as arithmetic at Vienna's published rates of US$85 and US$110 an hour, per vehicle. For a group of eight to twelve, an Executive Sprinter at US$170 an hour keeps everyone together on the way home. The chauffeur follows local rules on everything inside the vehicle.
Travelling on to Budapest
Bratislava sits on the way from Vienna to Budapest, and many itineraries string the three capitals together. By routed estimate on a clear road, Bratislava's old town to central Budapest is about 201 km (125 mi) and 2 hours 10 minutes, against about 244 km (152 mi) and 2 hours 40 minutes for Vienna to Budapest direct. A multi-stop transfer, Vienna to Bratislava for lunch and a walk, then on to Budapest by evening, is priced as one fixed fare on the web booker, and the bags stay in the vehicle all day.
Families should give the children's ages when booking, so child or booster seats are fitted before pickup for every leg.
Borders, vignettes and the road
Slovakia charges for its motorways with an electronic vignette, and eznamka.sk describes itself as the only official sales channel for Slovak motorway vignettes; Austria's ASFINAG sells the Austrian one. Partner vehicles carry what they need, and on an Elly8.net booking, motorway tolls are billed at cost. Carry your passport; this is an international border, and checks can be made.
Car or train: who should choose what
| Traveller | Our honest pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo or a couple on a day trip | REX train with the Bratislava Ticket | Twice an hour, about an hour, city transport included on day one |
| Family with suitcases moving between hotels | Private car, Business SUV | One vehicle, no stations, bags handled |
| Landing at VIE, staying in Bratislava | Private car from arrivals | About 49 minutes to the old town |
| Flight from Bratislava Airport, staying in Vienna | Private car to BTS | Door to terminal, about 1 h 10 min |
| Carnuntum and Bratislava in one day | Private car, full day | Two stops, one vehicle, no changes |
| Business meetings in both cities | Private car by the hour | The car waits between meetings |
Which vehicle for the Bratislava run
A Business Sedan, an E-Class, CT6, Continental or similar, takes three passengers and two large bags, which suits a couple with luggage or three colleagues with briefcases. A Business SUV or Van, a Suburban, Yukon XL or V-Class, takes six and six, the right choice for a family moving hotels. An Executive Sprinter takes twelve and twelve. For a client day, the First Class Sedan, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar, costs US$140 an hour. Whichever you choose, the price is per vehicle, not per person.
What a private driver costs
The one-way Vienna to Bratislava transfer, and any airport run involving BTS, are fixed per vehicle and shown on the web booker before you pay. For reference, Vienna's published rates are:
| Vehicle | Passengers / large bags | By the hour, 3-hour minimum | Full day, 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$85 | US$630 |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 / 6 | US$110 | US$810 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$140 | US$1,035 |
| First Class SUV | 6 / 6 | US$130 | US$960 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 / 12 | US$170 | US$1,255 |
Prices include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost; entry tickets are separate. Vienna Airport to the Innere Stadt is a fixed transfer from US$125 in a Business Sedan to US$325 in an Executive Sprinter. See city to city car service.
How booking works
Rides from Vienna are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Enter the pickup, the Bratislava address or BTS with your flight number, and any stop such as Carnuntum; choose the vehicle and child seats; the web booker shows the fixed price, payable by card in US$, and confirmation arrives by email.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. All Vienna fares are on the Vienna chauffeur service page; for getting around Vienna itself, see our Vienna taxi guide, and for the next capital north, Prague to Vienna by car or train. Budapest is also on the network: see the Budapest chauffeur service.
