A Lake Como day trip from Milan with a private driver is an 8-hour package on Elly8.net, fixed and all-in from US$665 in a business sedan to US$1,325 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. The chauffeur collects you at your Milan hotel in the morning, drives you to the lake, waits while you visit, meets you after the boat if you take one, and brings you back in the evening.

The hard part is not the booking but the plan. Lake Como is long, its roads are slow at the end, and the towns that appear close on a map can be an hour apart by car. This guide sets out three day routes we build often, with routed drive times, and explains when booking by the hour costs less than the package.

How much does a Lake Como day trip with a private driver cost?

The 8-hour Lake Como day trip from Milan costs US$665 in a business sedan, US$850 in a business SUV, US$995 in a First Class SUV, US$1,070 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,325 in an Executive Sprinter. Prices are per vehicle and include the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity; tolls and parking are billed at cost.

The package is published on our Milan chauffeur service page, because the day starts and ends in Milan. If you are already staying on the lake, the equivalent is the Lake Como full-day chauffeur at the same prices, from US$665 to US$1,325, listed on the Lake Como fares.

Three day routes at a glance

The drive times below are routed estimates from central Milan on a clear road, from the public OSRM routing engine. Real days are slower, so each route leaves room.

Route 1: Como town and the western shore villas

This is the route for people who came for the gardens.

Morning. Leave Milan at about 9:00 and reach Como town before 10:00. Walk the lakefront and the cathedral square, or take the funicular up to Brunate for the view down the lake. An hour is enough.

Late morning. Drive north along the western shore through Cernobbio, Moltrasio and Argegno. From Como to Tremezzo is about 31 km (20 mi), roughly 47 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate, and it is one of the lake's most scenic drives.

Afternoon. Visit Villa Carlotta and its gardens at Tremezzina, then Villa del Balbianello, the villa on its own wooded peninsula, run by Italy's national trust. The FAI sells Balbianello tickets online, so check its visitor page for opening times and how to reach the villa before you plan around it, and see Villa Carlotta for its opening days. Lunch in Tremezzo or Lenno fits between the two.

Return. From Tremezzo back to central Milan is about 80 km (50 mi), roughly 84 minutes on a clear road. Leaving at 16:30 puts you back at the hotel before the evening.

Why a driver suits this route: villa car parks are small, the shore road has very few places to stop, and the chauffeur drops you at the gate and waits.

Route 2: Bellagio and a boat across the lake

This is the day most visitors imagine: Bellagio's lanes and lakefront, and an hour on the water.

Morning. Leave Milan at about 8:30. Bellagio is about 72 km (45 mi) from central Milan, roughly 78 minutes on a clear road. The final stretch along the lake is narrow and winding, and on summer weekends it is the reason to leave early.

Midday. Explore Bellagio, then take a passenger boat across to Varenna or Menaggio. The public operator, Navigazione Laghi, runs the boats between the central lake towns on a seasonal timetable, which changes several times a year, including in October and November.

Afternoon. Here the chauffeur's flexibility matters. On most days the simplest plan is a return boat to Bellagio, where the car waits. On others the car can cross on the car ferry and meet you on the other side, but check the operator's notices first: in autumn 2026 vehicle service was suspended at the Varenna and Menaggio piers for works (Navigazione Laghi notices). Tell the desk your boat times and the chauffeur builds the day around them.

Return. Bellagio to central Milan is about 72 km (45 mi), roughly 79 minutes. Leave by 16:30 and you are back in time for dinner.

Route 3: the shorter day around Como town

Not every visitor needs eight hours. On an arrival day, with young children, or before an evening event in Milan, a shorter day at the southern end of the lake works well.

The plan. Drive to Como town (about 48 minutes), walk the centre and the lakefront, take the Brunate funicular, then continue to Cernobbio for lunch by the water. Cernobbio to central Milan is about 54 km (34 mi), roughly 49 minutes.

The price question. Here booking by the hour is often cheaper than the package. In Milan and on Lake Como the hourly rate is US$90 in a business sedan, US$115 in a business SUV, US$135 in a First Class SUV, US$145 in a First Class Sedan and US$180 in a Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. A six-hour day in a business sedan comes to US$540 at that rate, against US$665 for the 8-hour package. Past about seven hours, the package wins. See hourly chauffeur for how hourly bookings work.

Timing the day well

A few rules of thumb from the desk:

  • Leave Milan early. A start between 8:30 and 9:00 keeps you ahead of the busiest time on the shore roads.
  • Pick one side of the lake. Trying to do the western shore villas and Bellagio and Varenna in one day means most of it is spent in the car.
  • Build around the boats. The ferries run to a timetable; the car can wait, the boat will not.
  • Check opening days. Villas and gardens have seasonal hours and some close for part of the year. Check each one before you set the route.
  • Weekdays beat weekends, especially from May to September.
  • Plan the return. Leaving the lake at 16:30 rather than 18:00 often saves the worst of the traffic back into Milan.

If you want the day to continue into the evening, with dinner on the lake and a late drive back, tell the desk when you book; the time beyond the package is billed at the hourly rate.

The lake through the year

The best day trip depends on the month. From late spring to early autumn, the boats run their fullest timetables, the gardens are at their best and the shore roads are at their busiest; leave early and pick one side of the lake. In October the light is soft, the crowds thin out and many villas are still open, though the boat timetable shortens; Navigazione Laghi publishes separate timetables for different parts of the year, so check the one for your date. In winter some villas and hotels close for the season and the lake is quiet, which suits a slower day around Como town and Bellagio with a long lunch. Whatever the month, the 8-hour price is the same.

Which car for the day

Comfort for six or seven hours matters more than on a transfer. A Business Sedan or First Class Sedan takes up to three passengers, a Business SUV or First Class SUV up to six, and an Executive Sprinter up to twelve. On the lake roads a sedan or SUV is the most manoeuvrable; the Sprinter is the right choice for a group but has fewer places to stop, and the chauffeur will tell you if a particular villa or village is better reached on foot from a drop-off point. See the fleet and, for larger parties, group transportation.

Private driver, train, coach tour or rental car?

A fair comparison:

  • The train is cheap and frequent. Trenord runs from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes from €5.40, and to Varenna-Esino in about 64 minutes (Trenord, Milano Centrale to Varenna). A rail and boat day to Varenna and Bellagio is entirely possible for a fit couple with no fixed schedule. It does not reach the western shore villas easily.
  • A coach tour gives you a set itinerary with a group, at a per-person price. You go where the tour goes, when it goes.
  • A rental car gives flexibility but leaves you to the shore roads and the hunt for parking in small towns. See chauffeur vs renting a car.
  • A private driver costs more than the train for one or two people and often less per person than the alternatives for four or six, with your own timetable, door-to-door pickups and a car waiting after the boat.

For one person on a budget with a free day, take the train. For a family, a small group, or anyone who wants the villas and Bellagio without the logistics, the private driver is worth it. See also private city tours.

If you are staying on the lake

Travellers based in Bellagio, Tremezzo or Cernobbio book the reverse kind of day: out of the lake. With a full-day chauffeur from US$665, popular choices are Milan for shopping or The Last Supper, Lugano and Swiss Ticino just over the border, or the Alps. For getting around the lake towns themselves, our comparison of Lake Como taxis, apps and private cars explains what works for a single dinner or a short hop.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Lake Como day trip from Milan?

The Elly8.net package is 8 hours, door to door from your Milan hotel. With about 50 to 80 minutes of driving each way depending on the town, that leaves four to five hours on the lake. Time beyond eight hours is billed at the hourly rate.

What is included in the price?

The chauffeur, the vehicle for the day, taxes and standard gratuity, per vehicle. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. Entry tickets to villas and gardens, boat tickets and meals are not included and are paid directly.

Can we visit Bellagio and Varenna in one day?

Yes, by car to Bellagio and a passenger boat across to Varenna and back, following the operator's timetable. The car waits in Bellagio or, when the car ferry is running, crosses to meet you. Tell the desk your preferred boat times when you book.

Is it cheaper to book by the hour?

For shorter days, yes. At US$90 an hour in a business sedan, a six-hour day costs US$540 against US$665 for the 8-hour package. Past about seven hours, the package is the better price. The hourly booking has a 3-hour minimum.

Is there a day trip price for a group of ten?

Yes. The Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve, and the 8-hour day trip in a Sprinter is US$1,325 per vehicle, not per person. Shared between ten travellers, that is about US$132.50 each, as arithmetic for comparison only.

Do we need to book villas in advance?

Check each villa's own site before you go. Villa del Balbianello, run by the FAI, sells tickets online, and opening days and hours vary across the lake's villas and gardens. Book entries before you set the route with the desk.
