Frankfurt to Heidelberg is about 94 km (58 mi) by road from the banking district to Bismarckplatz at the edge of Heidelberg's Old Town, roughly 1 hour 3 minutes on a clear road down the A5, according to our routed estimate. From Frankfurt Airport it is about 87 km (54 mi) and just over an hour. A chauffeured full day, which covers the drive there, time in Heidelberg and the drive back, costs from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle.
The train is a fair alternative, and for some travellers the better one. The Heidelberg tourism office says the trip from Frankfurt Airport takes about 60 minutes by train with a change in Mannheim, or by shuttle bus. Where the car wins is the day itself: a stop on the way, the castle hill without the tram, bags handled at both ends, and a door-to-door return to your Frankfurt hotel in the evening.
How long does it take to drive from Frankfurt to Heidelberg?
From central Frankfurt to Heidelberg is about 94 km (58 mi), roughly 1 hour 3 minutes on a clear road via the A5, by our routed estimate. From Frankfurt Airport it is about 87 km (54 mi), just over an hour. Weekday rush hour around Frankfurt and Darmstadt can add 20 minutes or more.
The route is simple. From the city you join the A5 heading south past the airport interchange and Darmstadt, then follow the motorway to the Heidelberg exits. The Heidelberg tourism office's arrival page notes that the A5 and A656 have direct exits to Heidelberg. Traffic is the main variable: the stretch around the Frankfurt interchange is one of the busiest in Germany at peak times, and on a Friday afternoon the A5 southbound fills with weekend traffic. A chauffeur plans the departure around that, and the price is fixed whatever the traffic does.

Distances and drive times on the route
All figures are routed estimates on a clear road from the public OSRM routing engine. Real times depend on traffic, roadworks and the time of day.
| From | To | Routed distance | Clear-road drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt banking district | Heidelberg, Bismarckplatz | 93.7 km / 58.2 mi | about 1 h 3 min |
| Frankfurt Airport (FRA) | Heidelberg, Bismarckplatz | 86.9 km / 54.0 mi | about 1 h 4 min |
| Frankfurt banking district | Darmstadt, Mathildenhöhe | 38.4 km / 23.8 mi | about 34 min |
| Frankfurt banking district | Weinheim on the Bergstrasse | 76.6 km / 47.6 mi | about 50 min |
| Heidelberg, Bismarckplatz | Schwetzingen | 13.5 km / 8.4 mi | about 20 min |
| Frankfurt banking district | Schwetzingen | 91.2 km / 56.7 mi | about 59 min |
The train: when it is the better choice
Heidelberg is well connected by rail. Its tourism office says the main station is served regularly by ICE, IC and regional trains, with fast connections to Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Mannheim, and that from the main station you reach the Old Town in about 10 minutes by tram or bus. It also says plainly that visiting Heidelberg without a car is easy.
So be honest about the comparison, and let the size of your group and your luggage decide. A solo traveller or a couple with day bags, staying near Frankfurt's Hauptbahnhof, who want to walk the Old Town and come back by train in the evening, will spend far less by rail. Fares and timetables are on Deutsche Bahn, and the long-distance station at the airport makes the train simple straight off a flight too, as the airport's rail guide explains.
When a private car is worth it
You land at FRA and go straight to Heidelberg. After an overnight flight, a change of trains in Mannheim with suitcases is the part of the trip people remember least fondly. A chauffeur meets you inside arrivals, tracks the flight, and drives the 87 km door to door. One-way transfers like this are quoted on the web booker.
You want stops on the way. The train goes from station to station. A car can spend an hour at Darmstadt, follow the Bergstrasse villages, or add Schwetzingen on the way home.
You are four or more. A Business SUV or van seats six with six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve with twelve bags. For a family or a group of colleagues, one vehicle at one fixed price is simpler than buying and coordinating train tickets for everyone.
Mobility or time matters. The castle sits above the Old Town on the hillside. A car takes you as close as the roads and parking rules allow and collects you at an agreed point, rather than leaving the climb to you.
It is a business day. Heidelberg has a university, research institutes and a congress centre; a roadshow day can start in Frankfurt's towers, run to meetings in Heidelberg and Mannheim, and end back at FRA for an evening flight. The corporate roadshow day costs from US$765 in a business sedan to US$1,530 in an Executive Sprinter, with the car held between meetings, and a corporate account adds monthly invoicing and NDAs on request. See roadshow chauffeur for how those days are planned.
Stops worth adding
Darmstadt and the Mathildenhöhe. About 34 minutes south of central Frankfurt, Darmstadt's artists' colony on the Mathildenhöhe is listed by Darmstadt Tourism as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It makes a good first stop, early, before the drive continues to Heidelberg.
The Bergstrasse. The old road along the edge of the Odenwald hills runs through wine and fruit towns such as Bensheim and Weinheim, about 50 minutes from Frankfurt by our routed estimate. Leaving the motorway for part of the way trades a little time for a far prettier drive.
Schwetzingen. About 20 minutes from Heidelberg, Schwetzingen is known for its palace and gardens and fits well into the afternoon on the way back north.
Heidelberg itself. The castle above the town, the Old Bridge across the Neckar and the Philosophers' Walk on the opposite bank are the classic trio. The tourism office notes that the Old Town is easily explored on foot from Neckarmünzplatz, where the tourist information office is, and that coaches may stop there only briefly for drop-off and pickup. Your chauffeur agrees the drop-off and pickup points with you, so you walk the town and the car meets you where you finish.
A sample chauffeured day
A comfortable eight-hour day might look like this. Leave the banking district at 9:00, reach the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt by about 9:40, and spend an hour there. Continue to Heidelberg, arriving late morning, for the castle, lunch in the Old Town and a walk across the Old Bridge. Leave around 15:30 for Schwetzingen, or take the Bergstrasse back north, and be at your Frankfurt hotel in time for dinner.
On the Elly8.net price list, Heidelberg works as a full day on the full-day chauffeur rate: from US$630 in a business sedan, US$810 in a business SUV, US$960 in a First Class SUV, US$1,035 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, all-in and per vehicle. Prices include the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity; tolls and parking are billed at cost. Entry tickets to the castle and gardens are bought separately.
If you only need the car for part of the day, the hourly rate is US$85 an hour in a business sedan, US$110 in a business SUV, US$130 in a First Class SUV, US$140 in a First Class Sedan and US$170 in a Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. As simple arithmetic, a five-hour booking in a business sedan would come to US$425, which can suit a short visit: drive down, two hours in the Old Town, drive back. Most people find Heidelberg deserves longer, and the full day removes any watching of the clock. See hourly chauffeur and private city tours.

What to tell the desk when you book
A day trip runs best when the chauffeur knows the shape of it in advance. When you book, add a few lines to the notes: the time you want to leave, the stops you want and roughly how long at each, whether anyone in the group prefers not to walk uphill, and where you would like to be dropped and collected in Heidelberg. Mention child seats with the children's ages, and any luggage if the day ends somewhere other than your Frankfurt hotel.
The chauffeur can then plan the order of the day around traffic and opening hours. Leaving Frankfurt after the morning rush, for example, can save more time than any shortcut, and visiting the castle before the late-morning crowds keeps the afternoon free for the river. If plans change on the day, tell the chauffeur; changes that add time or distance beyond the booked day are billed at cost, and the desk confirms anything significant before it happens.
Ending the day somewhere else
Not every Heidelberg day ends back in Frankfurt. Some travellers use it as the first leg of a longer road trip, with the bags in the boot. Routed estimates on a clear road, from the public OSRM engine, put Mannheim about 19.8 km (12.3 mi) and 21 minutes from Heidelberg, Stuttgart about 127 km (79 mi) and 1 hour 30 minutes, Strasbourg about 138 km (86 mi) and 1 hour 32 minutes, and Munich or Zurich each roughly 332 to 337 km (206 to 210 mi) and about 3 hours 30 minutes.
Those longer drives are quoted on the web booker as city-to-city transfers, and they can include Heidelberg as a stop on the way. Ending in Zurich means crossing into Switzerland, where the vehicle needs a motorway vignette; that is the partner operator's responsibility, not yours. For the Swiss end of such a trip, see our Zurich day trips with a private driver.
Or choose the Rhine instead
If the day is about wine and river views rather than a university town, the signature Frankfurt package is an eight-hour day in the Rhine Valley and Rüdesheim, at the same prices, from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in a Sprinter. Rüdesheim lists its sights and wine estates, and the chauffeur drives so everyone else can enjoy the tastings, following local rules in the vehicle itself. See wine tours and the Frankfurt car service page.
