The best day trips from Geneva by car split into three kinds. The Lake Geneva shore takes you to Lausanne, the Lavaux vineyards and Montreux in under 75 minutes. The French side, south and east of the city, puts Annecy and the medieval village of Yvoire within 45 minutes. The mountains, Chamonix and Mont Blanc above all, are about an hour and a quarter away, with Gruyères and its castle and cheese dairy at about an hour and a half.
With Elly8.net, a private driver for the day from your Geneva hotel costs from US$740 in a Business Sedan to US$1,475 in an Executive Sprinter for eight hours, and shorter trips are booked by the hour from US$100, with a 3-hour minimum. Every price is fixed, all-in and per vehicle. Below are six routes, timed, with the hours each one needs.
How far are the best day trips from Geneva by car?
By routed estimate from the Geneva lakefront on a clear road: Yvoire about 33 minutes, Annecy about 43 minutes, Lausanne about 49 minutes, the Lavaux vineyards about 1 hour, Montreux about 1 hour 10 minutes, Chamonix about 1 hour 15 minutes and Gruyères about 1 hour 30 minutes. Weekday rush hours leaving Geneva add time.
The distances below start from the lakefront, where Elly8.net's Geneva fares are calculated. Three of the six destinations are in France, so carry your passport.
| Destination | Country | Distance | Clear-road drive | Suggested booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yvoire, medieval village | France | 26 km / 16 mi | about 33 min | By the hour, 4 hours |
| Annecy, lake and old town | France | 43 km / 27 mi | about 43 min | By the hour, 5 to 6 hours |
| Lausanne | Switzerland | 64 km / 40 mi | about 49 min | By the hour, 5 to 6 hours |
| Lavaux vineyards (Cully) | Switzerland | 78 km / 48 mi | about 1 h 01 min | Full day, 8 hours |
| Montreux and Chillon Castle | Switzerland | 96 km / 60 mi | about 1 h 13 min | Full day, 8 hours |
| Chamonix and Mont Blanc | France | about 90 km / 56 mi | about 1 h 15 min | Signature day trip, 8 hours |
| Gruyères | Switzerland | 121 km / 75 mi | about 1 h 29 min | Full day, 8 hours |
The six routes, one by one
1. Chamonix and Mont Blanc: the signature day
The eight-hour Chamonix and Mont Blanc day trip is Elly8.net's signature package in Geneva, and the one most guests choose first. The drive is about 90 km (56 mi) each way, mostly on the Autoroute Blanche, a toll motorway; tolls are billed at cost. In the valley, the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc runs the Aiguille du Midi cable car to 3,842 metres, the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace and the Mont-Blanc Tramway, with tickets bought separately.
Plan on one big excursion, lunch, and a walk in town. The route, the stops on the way and the ski-season version are covered in detail in our guide to the drive from Geneva Airport to Chamonix.
2. Lausanne and the Lavaux vineyards
Lausanne, which its tourist office calls Switzerland's fourth city and the Olympic Capital, is about 49 minutes from the lakefront. A little further east, the Lavaux terraced vineyards climb above the lake between Lausanne and Vevey-Montreux, and were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2007.
This is the day that suits a private driver best. The villages are strung along a narrow lakeside road, tastings are the point of the visit, and nobody in your party has to drive. Allow a full eight-hour day if you want Lausanne in the morning and two cellars in the afternoon. The chauffeur follows local rules on everything inside the vehicle. See wine tours.
3. Montreux and Chillon Castle
Chillon Castle, on the shore at Montreux, describes itself as Switzerland's most visited historical monument, and it pairs naturally with a walk along the Montreux quays. The routed drive is about 1 hour 13 minutes, and Lavaux lies between Lausanne and Montreux, so many guests combine routes 2 and 3 in one full day: Chillon first, before the crowds, then lunch in Montreux and a tasting in Lavaux on the way home.
In July, Montreux hosts its jazz festival, and festival nights mean late returns along the lake. For an evening rather than a day, the evening out and event night package costs from US$500 in a Business Sedan to US$1,000 in an Executive Sprinter. See concert transportation.
4. Gruyères: castle, cheese and chocolate
The furthest of the six is about 1 hour 29 minutes by routed estimate. The La Gruyère tourist region groups three visits that make an easy day: Gruyères Castle, La Maison du Gruyère for cheese, and Maison Cailler for chocolate. From Montreux it is only about 37 minutes, so a long day can run Geneva, Chillon, Gruyères and back. Book the full eight hours, and add hours if you want all four stops without rushing.
5. Annecy: the lake and the old town in France
Annecy is the closest big day out, about 43 minutes south of the lakefront across the French border. The tourist office's must-sees are the old town and a cruise on the lake. A five- or six-hour booking by the hour gives you a morning in the old town, lunch, and a boat trip before the drive home. As arithmetic, six hours at US$100 an hour in a Business Sedan is US$600, against US$740 for a full eight-hour day.
6. Yvoire: a half day on the French shore
Yvoire is a fortified medieval village on the French shore of Lake Geneva, known for its flowers and its Garden of Five Senses. At about 33 minutes from the lakefront, it is the ideal half day: a four-hour booking at US$100 an hour, US$400 in a Business Sedan, covers the drive both ways and two hours in the village. It is also a good first-day outing after an overnight flight, when a full day in the mountains is too much.
Three combinations that work in one day
A private driver makes it easy to join two routes that public transport keeps apart. These pairings fit inside the eight-hour full day, by routed estimate on a clear road.
The lake shore loop: Lausanne, Lavaux and Chillon. Geneva to Lausanne takes about 49 minutes, Lausanne to Cully in Lavaux about 14 minutes, Cully to Chillon about 26 minutes, and Chillon back to Geneva about 1 hour 13 minutes. That is under three hours at the wheel, leaving about five hours for the old town, a tasting and the castle.
Castle and cheese: Chillon and Gruyères. Geneva to Chillon is about 1 hour 13 minutes, Chillon to Gruyères about 41 minutes, and Gruyères back to Geneva about 1 hour 30 minutes. With roughly three and a half hours of driving, this is a full day; start early, and add an hour if you want lunch to be unhurried.
Two French lakeside towns: Yvoire and Annecy. Geneva to Yvoire is about 33 minutes, Yvoire to Annecy about 1 hour 4 minutes, and Annecy back to Geneva about 43 minutes. It is a gentle day of about two and a half hours on the road, with the morning in a medieval village and the afternoon by Lake Annecy.
Families should tell the desk the children's ages when booking, so child or booster seats are fitted before pickup; a Business SUV leaves room for a stroller and a cool bag as well.
How many hours to book
Take the drive time each way, add the time you want at the destination, and add half an hour of slack for Geneva's traffic and a coffee stop. Then pick the cheaper way to book:
- By the hour, 3-hour minimum. US$100 an hour in a Business Sedan, US$125 in a Business SUV, US$150 in a First Class SUV, US$160 in a First Class Sedan and US$200 in an Executive Sprinter. Best for Yvoire, Annecy and a Lausanne morning.
- Full-day chauffeur, eight hours. US$740 in a Business Sedan, which is less than eight hours at the hourly rate (US$800). Best for Lavaux, Montreux, Gruyères or any combination.
- Chamonix and Mont Blanc day trip, eight hours. Priced the same as the full day.
Worked example: Gruyères is about 1 hour 29 minutes each way. Add four hours for the castle, the cheese dairy and lunch, plus 30 minutes of slack, and you reach about 7 hours 30 minutes, so book the full day. Yvoire is 33 minutes each way; add two hours in the village and you need four hours, so book by the hour.
Check opening days and timed tickets before you fix the date, and give the first booked time to the desk; the pickup is set backwards from your first ticket, not forwards from breakfast.
What a Geneva day trip costs, by vehicle
| Vehicle | Passengers / large bags | By the hour | Full day, 8 hours | Chamonix day trip, 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$100 | US$740 | US$740 |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 / 6 | US$125 | US$920 | US$920 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$160 | US$1,180 | US$1,180 |
| First Class SUV | 6 / 6 | US$150 | US$1,105 | US$1,105 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 / 12 | US$200 | US$1,475 | US$1,475 |
Prices are per vehicle and include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls, parking at the destination and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Entry tickets, cable cars, boats and tastings are separate.
For a family of five, a Business SUV full day at US$920 works out at US$184 each, as arithmetic for comparison only; the fare is for the vehicle. For a group of ten in an Executive Sprinter at US$1,475, the share is US$147.50 each. See group transportation and Sprinter van with driver.
Driver or train for a Geneva day trip?
Switzerland's trains are excellent, and for a solo traveller going to Lausanne, the train is cheaper and fast. Guests staying in approved Geneva accommodation even ride free inside the canton with the Geneva Transport Card. Be fair to the train when it fits.
A private driver earns its price on the routes where public transport means changes and timetables: the Lavaux village road, Gruyères with three separate visits, a two-country day to Yvoire and Annecy, and Chamonix with children or equipment. It also wins for any group of four or more, where one vehicle replaces several tickets and a taxi at each end. If you are deciding between apps, taxis and a car for getting around the city itself, see Uber in Geneva vs a taxi vs a private car and our guide to Geneva taxi fares.
For a birthday, an anniversary or a client day, the First Class Sedan, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar, costs US$1,180 for the full eight hours, and the First Class SUV, an Escalade, Navigator or similar with six seats and room for six bags, costs US$1,105. Both come with the same chauffeur service and the same fixed, all-in pricing as the business classes; the difference is the vehicle.
Staying in the city instead
If you would rather see Geneva itself, the private city highlights tour costs from US$400 in a Business Sedan to US$800 in an Executive Sprinter and covers the lakefront and the Jet d'Eau, the Old Town, the international district and Carouge. See private city tours.
