Uber works in Geneva, but it works under Geneva's rules, and those rules change the comparison North American travellers are used to making. A ride-hailing car in the canton may only take a ride that was ordered in advance through the app; it cannot be waved down, it cannot cruise for passengers, and its fare is set by the platform. A Geneva taxi, by contrast, charges a regulated maximum or a published flat fare from the airport: CHF 50 to the city centre on the right bank and CHF 60 to the left bank.
So which should you book? For one or two people with carry-ons, the train under the airport terminal is faster and cheaper than any car. For a quick ride to a hotel, the airport taxi rank is fair and simple. For a family, a group, ski luggage, the French side of the airport or a fixed budget, a pre-booked Elly8.net car from US$125 per vehicle is the calmer choice. The rest of this guide shows the numbers behind each answer.
Is Uber, a taxi or a private car cheapest from Geneva Airport?
For one traveller, the train is cheapest: CHF 3 and 7 minutes to Genève-Cornavin. Among cars, the official taxi flat fare of CHF 50 to 60 to the centre usually beats a private car for one or two people. Ride-hailing prices change with demand. A fixed Elly8.net car starts at US$125 per vehicle, which pays off for families and groups.
The table sets out the four choices for the trip most visitors make first: Geneva Airport (GVA) to a hotel near the lake. The drive itself is about 10 km (6 mi) and about 27 minutes on a clear road.
| Option | What you pay | How you get it | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train to Genève-Cornavin | CHF 3, unireso zone 10 | Station under the terminal, about 7 min, up to 7 trains an hour at peak | One or two travellers, light bags |
| Official taxi, flat fare | CHF 35 to the international organisations, CHF 50 right bank, CHF 60 left bank | Rank outside the arrivals level | A direct ride for one to three people |
| Ride-hailing app (Uber and others) | Set by the platform, changes with demand | Ordered in the app, pickup where the airport allows | Off-peak rides, travellers who already use the app |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan | From US$125 per vehicle, fixed and all-in | Pre-booked, met inside arrivals with a name board | Fixed budgets, late flights, meetings |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$325 per vehicle, fixed and all-in | Pre-booked, up to 12 passengers and 12 bags | Families, groups, ski trips |
The private car is rarely the cheapest option for a solo traveller, and it would be wrong to pretend otherwise. Its value shows up when you count the people in the party, the bags, the time of night and how much the arrival matters.
How Uber and other ride-hailing apps work in Geneva
Uber operates in Geneva, and its app can also request a local taxi. What makes Geneva different is the cantonal law that governs both taxis and what it calls VTC, the French abbreviation for a car with a driver hired through a booking platform. The Geneva law on taxis and VTC sets out the main differences in plain terms.
A VTC may only carry passengers on a ride ordered or reserved in advance, and the driver must be able to prove it at any time. A VTC has no right to wait on the public road for a ride or to stop for someone who hails it. It may not carry markings that could be confused with a taxi. Taxis, on the other hand, may wait at taxi ranks, use bus lanes and enter certain restricted streets where signs allow it.
At the airport, Genève Aéroport confirms that ride-hailing services are available and that their fares are set by each booking platform, with services required to meet the airport's own access rules. The airport does not publish a ride-hailing pickup price, and neither does any public body, so any number you read elsewhere is an estimate. Check the app at the moment you land.
What this means in practice:
- You cannot flag down an app car outside Cornavin or the Palais des Nations. Order it, wait for it, and meet it where the app tells you.
- The price is the platform's price. It can be lower than a taxi off-peak and higher when many people want a car at once, such as the end of a congress day at Palexpo.
- Large groups need more than one car. Most app cars are standard sedans. A family of five with suitcases often needs two.

What a Geneva taxi costs from the airport
Geneva's taxis are regulated by the canton, and the airport fares are some of the most transparent in Europe. According to the Genève Aéroport taxi page, official taxis wait at the designated rank outside the arrivals level, and four flat fares apply from the airport: CHF 25 for the area close to the airport, CHF 35 to the international organisations, CHF 50 to the city centre on the right bank and CHF 60 to the city centre on the left bank. For other destinations, the fare is calculated on the regulated price per kilometre.
The same flat fares apply in the other direction, from those zones to the airport, which makes the taxi an easy choice for a departure from a central hotel. Taxis generally accept cash and cards, though the airport advises checking before you set off.
A flat fare is per vehicle, not per person, but a standard taxi is a car. Three adults with three large suitcases and three carry-ons will test the boot of most sedans, and anything beyond that means a second taxi and a second fare. Beyond the city, the meter takes over, and the meter in Geneva charges more per kilometre for trips that leave the canton. The full tariff, with the night rate and the luggage supplements, is explained in our guide to Geneva taxi fares and ranks.
The cheapest option of all: the train and the free transport card
Before choosing between cars, consider whether you need one. Genève Aéroport's railway station sits directly beneath the terminal. Trains reach Genève-Cornavin in 7 minutes, up to seven an hour at peak times, and a unireso zone 10 ticket costs CHF 3.
Many visitors ride for nothing. Geneva Tourism's Geneva Transport Card is free for anyone staying in approved accommodation in the canton. It covers buses, trams, trains and the Mouettes shuttle boats in unireso zone 10 for the whole stay, it arrives by email up to three days before arrival depending on the hotel, and it can be used to reach your accommodation from the airport. If you are staying near Cornavin or on the right bank with light bags, that is very hard to beat.
The train becomes less attractive with a family's worth of luggage, with small children, after a long overnight flight to a hotel on the left bank or in Cologny, or when you are heading straight to the mountains.
Choosing by trip: who should book what
There is no single right answer for Geneva, so here is how the desk would advise different travellers. All Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, fixed and all-in, and the same in either direction between GVA and the lakefront.
| Traveller | Our honest pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, carry-on, hotel near Cornavin | Train, or the free transport card | 7 minutes, CHF 3 or nothing |
| Couple, two suitcases, left-bank hotel | Taxi at the flat fare | CHF 60 to the left bank, no booking needed |
| Family of four, child seats, four cases | Elly8.net Business SUV, US$165 | Seats fitted in advance, room for six bags |
| Six skiers heading to Chamonix | Elly8.net Executive Sprinter, quoted on the booker | One vehicle for people, skis and boot bags |
| Delegation to the Palais des Nations | Elly8.net by the hour, from US$100 an hour | The car waits between sessions |
| Late arrival, tired, fixed budget | Elly8.net Business Sedan, US$125 | Price agreed before you fly, name board in arrivals |
The arithmetic for a family is simple. A Business SUV at US$165 for four people is US$41.25 each, as arithmetic for comparison only; the price is for the vehicle. Two taxis to the left bank at the flat fare would cost CHF 120 for the same family, and you would be loading two boots in the rain. For a group of ten in an Executive Sprinter at US$325, the share is US$32.50 each, again purely as arithmetic, and nobody is left waiting for a second car.
When a private car is the better call
A pre-booked chauffeur earns its fare in Geneva in five situations.
Arrivals that cannot go wrong. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board, and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing covers a slow passport queue or a late bag. If your connection through Frankfurt or Zurich slips, message the 24/7 desk and the pickup moves with you. See airport transfers and meet and greet.
The French side of the airport. GVA has a France Sector, and passengers who leave on the French side cannot simply walk across to the Swiss taxi rank. Tell us which side you will exit and the meeting point is set there. This matters most for chalets in Chamonix, Megève and Courchevel; see our guide to the drive from Geneva Airport to Chamonix and the fixed Courchevel transfers.
Groups, bags and child seats. A Business SUV or Van takes six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve. Child and booster seats are fitted before pickup when you give the ages. See group transportation.
Meetings and missions. Delegations heading to the international organisations often need a car that waits rather than a ride that leaves. The hourly service costs from US$100 an hour in a Business Sedan to US$200 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. Access, accreditation and security at the Palais are for the organisations and the authorities; we provide the car and chauffeur. See government and diplomatic transportation.
A fixed number. The fare is agreed before you travel, charged in US dollars, and does not move with traffic or demand. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
Leaving Geneva: the departure run
The return trip deserves the same thought as the arrival. If you are staying in the centre with light bags, a taxi at the flat fare back to the airport is easy, and the train runs from Cornavin in 7 minutes. If you are checking out of a chalet, a lakeside villa or a hotel in a quieter commune with a family's luggage, a pre-booked car removes the morning scramble.
Every Elly8.net airport fare on the Geneva page is the same fixed price in either direction, so the hotel to GVA run costs exactly what the arrival did: from US$125 in a Business Sedan, US$165 in a Business SUV, US$200 in a First Class SUV and US$220 in a First Class Sedan, to US$325 in an Executive Sprinter. Booking both legs together as a round trip costs from US$240 in a Business Sedan to US$620 in a Sprinter, and the car for your departure is confirmed before you land.
If you are leaving on a flight from the France Sector, tell the desk; the drop-off is planned for that side.
How booking an Elly8.net car in Geneva works
Rides in Geneva are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.

Frequently asked questions
Does Uber operate in Geneva?
Yes. Uber operates in Geneva, and its app can also request a local taxi. Under cantonal law, ride-hailing cars may only take rides ordered in advance through the platform; they cannot be hailed in the street or wait on the road for passengers. Fares are set by the platform and change with demand, so check the app when you land.
How much is a taxi from Geneva Airport to the city?
The official flat fares are CHF 50 to the city centre on the right bank and CHF 60 to the left bank, CHF 35 to the international organisations and CHF 25 for the area next to the airport. Taxis wait at the rank outside the arrivals level, and the same flat fares apply from those zones back to the airport.
Is the train better than Uber from GVA?
For one or two travellers with light bags, usually yes. The station is under the terminal, trains reach Genève-Cornavin in 7 minutes, and a zone 10 ticket costs CHF 3. Guests in approved accommodation can use the free Geneva Transport Card instead. A car makes more sense with children, heavy bags or onward trips.
Can an Elly8.net chauffeur meet you on the French side of Geneva Airport?
Yes. Tell us when you book which side of the airport you will exit, Swiss or French, and the meeting point is set there. The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits with a name board. This is especially useful for guests heading to Chamonix, Megève or Courchevel.
What does a private car from GVA to the lakefront cost?
A fixed Elly8.net transfer costs from US$125 in a Business Sedan and US$165 in a Business SUV to US$325 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, in either direction. It includes the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls, parking and extra waiting are billed at cost.
Is a private car worth it for a group?
Often. An Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags for US$325 to the lakefront, which is US$32.50 each for ten people as simple arithmetic; the fare is per vehicle. The same group would need several taxis or app cars, each with its own fare and its own wait.
