An Uber Black can be a Mercedes-Benz, and often is: the E-Class, S-Class, the EQE and EQS, and SUVs such as the GLE and GLS are all on Uber's list of eligible Black vehicles. What the app does not offer is a way to ask for one. You request Black, a nearby driver with any qualifying car accepts, and the app shows you the make, model and plate. It might be a Mercedes, a BMW 7 Series, a Cadillac Escalade or a Tesla Model S.
If the brand is a nice-to-have, that is fine. If it is the point, for a wedding car, a client arrival or a photograph on the hotel steps, the honest answer is to book the vehicle class in advance and confirm it with the people supplying the car. This guide explains how both work, and what each costs on real routes.
Can you request a Mercedes on Uber Black?
Not specifically. Uber lists many Mercedes-Benz models as eligible for Uber Black, from the E-Class and S-Class to the GLS and Maybach, but the app matches you with any nearby qualifying car, and eligibility varies by city. You see the make and plate after a driver accepts. To be sure of the car, book the vehicle class in advance.
Uber's Uber Black page describes the fleet as high-end, late-model luxury sedans and SUVs and says to expect premium brands such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It also says specific eligibility and models vary by city and market requirements. The way the product works is set out on the same page: you set your destination, select Black, and when the car arrives you verify that it matches the vehicle shown in the app.
The Mercedes-Benz models on Uber's Black list
The list on Uber's page is long, and Mercedes is well represented. Among the sedans: the E-Class, the S-Class and the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, and the electric EQE and EQS. Among the SUVs: the GLC, GLE, GLS and GL-Class, the GLC and GLE coupés, the electric EQE SUV and EQS SUV, and the G-Class. Alongside them sit the Audi A6 to A8, the BMW 5 and 7 Series and X5 to X7, the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, Genesis, Lexus, Volvo, Porsche, Tesla and Rolls-Royce models.
Three practical points follow. A standard Black seats up to four passengers and Black SUV up to six, so a GLS and an E-Class sit in different products. Your city may not allow every model on the list. And because any eligible car can accept your request, the brand you get is a matter of who is nearest, not of what you prefer.
What riders actually pay for Uber Black
Uber publishes the average price riders paid over the past month for each tier on its airport pages. They are averages, not fixed prices, and they are measured to the airport from a named neighbourhood. They are still the best public evidence of what an Uber Black costs on a normal day.
| Route Uber measured | Uber Black average | Elly8.net Business Sedan (E-Class or similar) | Elly8.net First Class Sedan (S-Class or similar) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manhattan's West Side to LGA | US$111 | US$145 LGA to Midtown | US$255 |
| Manhattan's West Side to EWR | US$154 | US$215 EWR to Midtown | US$380 |
| Old Fourth Ward to ATL | US$72 | US$150 ATL to Midtown Atlanta | US$265 |
| Toronto to YYZ | C$131 | US$155 YYZ to downtown | US$275 |
The averages come from Uber's pages for LaGuardia, Newark, Atlanta and Toronto Pearson. Our fares are fixed, all-in and per vehicle, the same in either direction, and charged in US dollars, so compare the Toronto row at the day's exchange rate.
On an ordinary day the app is cheaper, often by a wide margin against an S-Class booked in advance. We would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. What the extra buys is certainty: the vehicle class you reserved, a chauffeur who meets you inside arrivals, complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, and a price that does not move on a Friday night. Our post on why Uber Black is often cheaper breaks down where the difference goes.
How a pre-booked car handles the make
Elly8.net books vehicle classes rather than random matches. Our fleet page lists them:
- Business Sedan: E-Class, CT6, Continental or similar, up to three passengers and two bags.
- First Class Sedan: Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar, up to three passengers and two bags.
- Business SUV / Van: Suburban, Yukon XL or Mercedes-Benz V-Class, up to six passengers and six bags.
- First Class SUV: Escalade, Navigator or similar, up to six passengers and six bags.
- Executive Sprinter: a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter executive, up to twelve passengers and twelve bags.
- Mercedes-Maybach: up to two passengers and two bags, priced in the web booker.
"Or similar" is an honest phrase, and we use it on purpose: a local partner may supply an equivalent model in the same class. If a specific make matters, for example an S-Class for a wedding photograph, tell the desk before you pay and we will tell you what the partner in that city can confirm. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, or seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.
The top of the range follows the same logic. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class appears on Uber's Black list, but no app tier lets you request one. In our fleet the Mercedes-Maybach is a bookable vehicle in its own right, for up to two passengers and two bags, priced in the web booker; partner vehicles in that class, like Rolls-Royce and Bentley, are seven model years old or newer.
When the badge really matters
- Weddings. The car is in the photographs. A First Class Sedan, a Maybach or a Rolls-Royce booked by the hour, with the chauffeur waiting through the ceremony, is a different product from an app ride that leaves when the trip ends. Our post on Uber Black for a wedding covers the timeline.
- Client and VIP arrivals. When the person in the back seat is the reason for the trip, confirm the class, the chauffeur and the meeting point in advance. See executive car service.
- Private aviation. Planeside and FBO pickups need a booked car and a chauffeur cleared to the right gate. See private jet and FBO transfers.
- Groups who want one vehicle. A Mercedes Sprinter for twelve keeps a team together; the app would send two or three separate cars. See Sprinter van with driver.
When it does not matter
Most trips do not need a particular badge. Getting home after dinner, a short hop between meetings, a quiet afternoon run to the airport with a carry-on: an Uber Black, a Premier or a Comfort does the job, and the make is a pleasant surprise rather than a requirement. Our comparison of Uber Black and Premier helps choose between the app's tiers, and for one person with light luggage the airport train or a taxi flat fare is often better value still.
The same applies to many business trips. A consultant moving between two offices on a weekday afternoon gains little from a guaranteed badge, and the app's in-trip preferences for temperature and conversation cover most of what makes a ride comfortable. Save the advance booking for the moments that would be awkward to repeat: the arrival, the ceremony, the client.
Electric Mercedes and the EQ models
Travellers increasingly ask for an electric car, and the Mercedes EQE, EQS and their SUV versions are on Uber's Black list, alongside the BMW i5 and i7, the Cadillac LYRIQ, the Lucid Air and Tesla's Model S and Model X. Uber's list also flags a change worth knowing about: it marks the Tesla Model Y as eligible only in Los Angeles, with that eligibility ending in summer 2026. Lists like this change, which is one more reason not to plan around a particular model in the app.
If a zero-emission car matters to you or your company's travel policy, Elly8.net lists an Electric Sedan in the fleet, a zero-emission business sedan for up to three passengers and two bags, priced in the web booker. Say so when you book, and the desk confirms what the partner in that city can supply before you pay.
A worked example: a client landing at Newark
Picture an executive assistant arranging an arrival at Newark for a visiting director, landing at 7:40 p.m. on a Thursday with one checked bag, heading to a Midtown hotel and a breakfast meeting.
In the app. Someone requests Uber Black after the director has the bag. On Uber's Newark page, Black averaged US$154 from the West Side to EWR over the past month; the price that evening is whatever the app quotes at the moment of request. The car may be an S-Class, a 7 Series or an Escalade. The director walks to the app pickup area and matches the plate.
Booked in advance. The assistant books a First Class Sedan, an S-Class or similar, at US$380 from EWR to Midtown, fixed and all-in, with the flight number and the name for the board. We track the flight. The chauffeur waits inside arrivals, and if the flight is an hour late, the waiting after the tracked landing is complimentary. The trip goes on the company's corporate account with a monthly invoice.
Both get the director to the hotel. The first is cheaper. The second removes every decision from the director's evening, which is usually what an assistant is paid to do.
Comfort beyond the car
The vehicle is only part of the experience. On Uber Black you can set cabin temperature, conversation and luggage-help preferences in the app. A pre-booked chauffeur gets the same information from your booking notes before the day, along with the flight number, the passenger name for the board and any child seats you request. The difference is when the information arrives: at the request, or days before.
There is also the question of waiting. Uber Black at an airport starts per-minute wait fees two minutes after the driver arrives, according to Uber's footnote, and a cancellation fee may follow after five. Our chauffeurs wait inside arrivals, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, so a slow passport queue costs nothing extra.
The fair way to decide
Ask what would go wrong if the car were a different make. If the answer is nothing, open the app and enjoy the saving. If the answer is the wedding photographs, the client's first impression or the group splitting into three cars, book the class in advance, in the city where you need it: New York, Atlanta, Toronto or any of our cities. For a broader view of the difference between a black car and a limousine, see black car vs limousine.
Rides in Toronto and the GTA are operated by the Elly8 fleet; in every other city they are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk. Elly8.net is a member of LWD and LimousineAssociation.International.
Frequently asked questions
Is every Uber Black a Mercedes?
No. Uber's eligible list includes many Mercedes-Benz models, but also Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Lincoln, Chevrolet, GMC, Genesis, Lexus, Tesla, Volvo and others. Eligibility varies by city. The app shows the make, model and plate once a driver accepts, and you should check them before getting in.
Is Uber Black SUV ever a Mercedes?
It can be. The Mercedes GLS, GLE, GL-Class, G-Class and EQS SUV are on Uber's eligible list, alongside the Escalade, Navigator, Suburban and Yukon. Black SUV seats up to six. As with sedans, the app does not let you request a particular make.
How much does an Uber Black cost compared with an S-Class booked in advance?
On Uber's own past-month averages, an Uber Black from Manhattan's West Side to LaGuardia averaged US$111. Elly8.net's First Class Sedan, an S-Class or similar, is US$255 from LaGuardia to Midtown, all-in, fixed and per vehicle. The app is cheaper on an ordinary day; the booked car guarantees the class and the meeting.
Can you guarantee a specific Mercedes model with Elly8.net?
Our vehicle classes are listed as "or similar", because local partners may supply an equivalent model. If a specific make matters, ask the desk before you pay and we will tell you what the partner in that city can confirm. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.
Does Elly8.net offer a Mercedes Sprinter?
Yes. The Executive Sprinter is a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter executive for up to twelve passengers and twelve bags, with published fares in each city, for example US$550 from JFK to Midtown. The Jet Sprinter, with captain's chairs for up to six, is priced in the web booker.
What is included in an Elly8.net fare?
The chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet inside arrivals. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show.
