The north of Portugal is built for day trips from Porto. Within an hour's drive are the medieval centre of Guimarães, the hilltop sanctuary of Braga, the canals of Aveiro and the river town of Amarante; a little further are Viana do Castelo on the Atlantic and the terraced vineyards of the Douro. A private driver turns any of these into a relaxed day that starts and ends at your hotel door.
This guide sets out six routes, with distances and times from Ribeira routed on a clear road, a realistic schedule for each, and what the day costs with Elly8.net. Prices are fixed, all-in and per vehicle, in US dollars.
What is the best day trip from Porto?
For wine, the Douro Valley is the classic Porto day trip and has its own 10-hour package from US$785. For history, Guimarães and Braga together make the strongest single day, each under an hour from Porto by our routed estimates. For something lighter, Aveiro and the striped houses of Costa Nova fill a relaxed afternoon.
The right answer depends on what your group enjoys and how much driving it wants. A good rule of thumb: keep total driving under four hours for a full day, so that most of the time is spent out of the car. Every route below respects that.
Six routes at a glance
These are our routed estimates from Ribeira on a clear road. Traffic leaving Porto in the morning and returning in the evening adds time.
| Route | One-way distance | Clear-road drive | Suggested booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guimarães and Braga | 55 km / 34 mi to each; 25 km / 16 mi between | about 44 min; 24 min between | Full-day chauffeur |
| Aveiro and Costa Nova | 75 km / 47 mi; plus 13 km / 8 mi | about 54 min; plus 15 min | Full-day or 6 hours by the hour |
| Amarante | 60 km / 37 mi | about 45 min | By the hour, or with the Douro |
| Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima | 76 km / 47 mi and 84 km / 52 mi | about 58 min and 59 min | Full-day chauffeur |
| Coimbra | 121 km / 75 mi | about 1 hr 26 min | Full-day chauffeur |
| Douro Valley wine estates | 95 km / 59 mi to Régua; 125 km / 78 mi to Pinhão | about 1 hr 17 min; 1 hr 36 min | Douro Valley day (10 hours) |
Guimarães and Braga
This is the history day. Guimarães is often described as the birthplace of Portugal, and the Historic Centre of Guimarães and Couros Zone is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with a hilltop castle, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and a compact medieval core best explored on foot.
Braga is the north's religious capital. Above the city, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, also on the UNESCO list, sits at the top of a long baroque stairway. A funicular climbs alongside the stairs, and the car can also drive up to the sanctuary, so you can choose to walk down only.
A sample day. Leave Porto at 09:00, Guimarães by 10:00 for the castle and old town, lunch there, then 25 km (16 mi) to Braga for the cathedral and Bom Jesus, and back to Porto by about 18:00. That is under two and a half hours of total driving in a nine-hour day.
Aveiro and Costa Nova
South along the coast, Aveiro is a town of canals, colourful moliceiro boats and Art Nouveau façades, with the salt pans and lagoon around it. The Câmara Municipal de Aveiro publishes what is on in town. A short drive to the coast brings you to Costa Nova, with its candy-striped wooden houses and a long Atlantic beach.
A sample day. Leave at 10:00, Aveiro by 11:00, a canal boat ride and lunch, Costa Nova for the afternoon, and back in Porto for an evening in Gaia. This is the gentlest of the six, and it works well for families with younger children or as a recovery day after a long flight.
Amarante
Amarante sits on the Tâmega river about 45 minutes east of Porto, with an old stone bridge, a riverside church and a quiet centre made for a long coffee by the water. On its own it suits a half-day on an hourly booking. It also lies on the way to the Douro, so many travellers stop here for coffee on a wine day.
Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima
North along the coast, Viana do Castelo is a handsome Atlantic town at the mouth of the Lima river, overlooked by the Santa Luzia basilica on its hill. Inland, Ponte de Lima has a long medieval bridge and a quiet riverside centre. The Câmara Municipal de Viana do Castelo covers events in the city.
A sample day. Viana in the morning, lunch by the sea, Ponte de Lima in the afternoon, and back to Porto by early evening. The two towns are close to each other, so the day has a pleasant rhythm with only short drives in the middle.
Coimbra
Coimbra is the longest of these routes from Porto, about 1 hour 26 minutes each way on a clear road by our routed estimate. The reward is the old university on its hill, with the historic library and chapel, and a lively student town below. It is also a natural stop on a one-way drive between Porto and Lisbon, covered in our guide to Lisbon to Porto by private car. As a round trip from Porto, it makes a full day with about three hours of driving.
The Douro Valley
The signature Porto day trip is the 10-hour Douro Valley wine estates package, priced separately because it is longer and goes deeper into the valley. A typical day includes two or three quinta visits with tastings and lunch overlooking the river, with the chauffeur driving so everyone in the party can enjoy the wine. This winter, rail services between Marco de Canaveses and Régua are replaced by buses from 3 November 2026 to 24 March 2027, which makes the car the simpler way there; our guide to the Porto to Douro Valley transfer compares train and car in detail.
What a Porto day trip costs
Every Elly8.net price for Porto is fixed and all-in, per vehicle, never per person. It includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity; tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
| Booking | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class SUV | First Class Sedan | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| By the hour (3-hour minimum) | US$85/hr | US$110/hr | US$130/hr | US$140/hr | US$170/hr |
| Private city highlights tour | US$340 | US$440 | US$520 | US$560 | US$680 |
| Full-day chauffeur | US$630 | US$810 | US$960 | US$1,035 | US$1,255 |
| Douro Valley day (10 hours) | US$785 | US$1,015 | US$1,200 | US$1,290 | US$1,565 |
As arithmetic for comparison only, a US$1,255 full day in an Executive Sprinter shared by ten people works out at US$125.50 each. The booking remains one vehicle at one price. For a half-day such as Amarante, the hourly rate is usually the better fit; for Guimarães and Braga, Viana or Coimbra, book the full-day chauffeur. For anything not on the list, the web booker returns a fixed price before you pay.
Timing: when to go and how to pace the day
Most visitors from the United States and Canada land in Porto in the morning after an overnight flight. Do not plan a day trip for that day. Book the airport transfer, sleep, walk Ribeira in the late afternoon, and save the road for day two or later. The chauffeur meets you in arrivals with a name board, and the transfer to Ribeira costs from US$100 in a business sedan to US$260 in an Executive Sprinter.
On the day itself, a 09:00 start is the sweet spot. It clears the worst of the outbound commuter traffic, puts you in the first town before it fills, and returns you to Porto before the evening rush on the approach roads. Lunch is the natural hinge of the day: in Guimarães, Viana or Aveiro, plan to eat where you spend the afternoon, and let the chauffeur reposition the car while you finish.
Seasons matter too. Summer days are long and the coast is at its best, but the towns are busier. Spring and autumn are ideal for walking old centres, and autumn brings the grape harvest to the Douro. In winter, daylight is shorter, so keep to one or two towns and head back before dark. Rain is common in the north outside summer, which is another reason a car waiting at the door is welcome.
Day trips from a cruise ship at Leixões
Cruise ships calling at Porto berth at the Port of Leixões cruise terminal in Matosinhos, about 12 km (8 mi) from Ribeira by our routed estimate. A port day is usually shorter than a hotel day, so plan backwards from the all-aboard time:
- Porto itself: the private city highlights tour, from US$340, covers the cathedral, Ribeira, the Clérigos area and the viewpoints, with the car waiting while you walk.
- Guimarães or Aveiro: possible on a long port call, with a margin for traffic on the way back.
- The Douro: usually too far for a typical port call; save it for a pre-cruise or post-cruise night.
Give us the ship name and the all-aboard time when you book. See cruise port transfers for how embarkation and disembarkation days work.
Choosing the car
The fleet capacities are fixed: a Business Sedan or First Class Sedan carries up to three passengers and two bags; a Business SUV or First Class SUV up to six passengers and six bags; an Executive Sprinter up to twelve passengers and twelve bags. On a day trip the bags are usually small, so passenger comfort decides it. Four adults on a full day are far more comfortable in an SUV than squeezed into a sedan. See the fleet for the models, and private city tours for how a guided day by car works.
Rides in Porto are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
When a coach tour or the train is the better choice
A private car is not the only way to see the north, and for some travellers it is not the best one. A solo traveller on a budget will spend far less on a group coach tour or on regional trains to Guimarães, Braga or Aveiro, all of which have rail links from Porto. If you enjoy the company of a group and do not mind a fixed itinerary, a shared tour is good value.
The private car wins on flexibility and on group economics. It leaves when you are ready, stops where you want, waits while you linger over lunch, and costs the same whether two people ride or six. For families with children, travellers with limited mobility and anyone combining two towns in one day, that flexibility is the point. Frequently asked questions
How much is a day trip from Porto with a private driver?
A full-day chauffeur costs from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, and the 10-hour Douro Valley day from US$785 to US$1,565. Both are fixed, all-in and per vehicle, including the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Can we visit Guimarães and Braga in one day?
Yes, comfortably. Each is about 55 km (34 mi) from Porto, around 44 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate, and they are about 25 km (16 mi) apart. A nine-hour day leaves plenty of time for both old towns and lunch.
What is the best half-day trip from Porto?
Amarante, about 45 minutes east, suits a half-day on an hourly booking from US$85 an hour with a 3-hour minimum. Aveiro also works as a long half-day, though adding Costa Nova and lunch turns it into a full day. Either way, the chauffeur collects you at the hotel and drops you back at the door.
Can we do a day trip from a cruise ship at Leixões?
Yes. The terminal is about 12 km (8 mi) from Ribeira. Porto itself and the nearer towns fit most port calls; give us the ship and the all-aboard time and the chauffeur plans the day backwards from it, with a margin for traffic.
Does the driver also act as a guide?
The chauffeur drives, waits and knows the routes, but is not a licensed guide. For in-depth commentary at Guimarães, Braga or a quinta, book a local guide or a guided visit at the site, and the chauffeur handles everything between stops.
Are child seats available for a day trip?
Yes. Request child or booster seats when you book and give the children's ages, and the partner fits them before pickup. An SUV gives a family room for seats, a stroller and a day bag, and the seats stay fitted for the whole day.
