A private driver on the Amalfi Coast booked through Elly8.net costs from US$90 an hour in a business sedan, with a 3-hour minimum, and from US$665 for a full day. Fixed transfers from Naples Airport (NAP) to Positano start at US$280, and the signature 8-hour Pompeii day costs from US$665. Every price is per vehicle, fixed when you book, charged in US dollars and includes standard gratuity.

What you are hiring is a licensed local driver and a vehicle, not a tour company: the person who knows which kerb in Amalfi is legal for a set-down, how long Positano to Ravello really takes in July, and which roads are open to licensed hire cars on restricted days. This guide covers the costs, the etiquette North Americans ask about, and the booking habits that make a summer week on the coast run smoothly.

How much does a private driver on the Amalfi Coast cost?

On Elly8.net, hourly service costs US$90 an hour in a business sedan and US$180 in an Executive Sprinter, 3-hour minimum. The full-day chauffeur costs from US$665, the highlights tour from US$360, and Naples Airport to Positano from US$280. Prices are per vehicle and include gratuity; tolls and parking are billed at cost.

These are the published prices on the Amalfi Coast fares panel, and they cover every common booking:

Anything not on the list, a pickup in Sorrento, a run to the port of Naples, a transfer from Rome, is quoted through the web booker as a fixed price per vehicle before you pay.

What you are actually hiring

Rides on the Amalfi Coast and in Naples are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.

The licence matters in Italy. Hire cars with driver, known as NCC, are booked in advance rather than hailed at a rank; Rome's airport operator, Aeroporti di Roma, states plainly that NCC services must be requested in advance. On the coast, the licence also matters for the road: under the 2026 ANAS rules published by the Comune di Praiano, taxis and NCC cars are exempt from the alternating-plate restriction that keeps private cars off the SS163 between 10.00 and 18.00 on restricted days.

What you are not hiring is a licensed tour guide. Your driver knows the roads, the stops and the meeting points, and will happily suggest a lunch place, but commentary inside Pompeii or a museum is a guide's job. Book guides through the sites themselves.

Tipping a driver in Italy

The question every American asks. Italy's official tourism portal says that tipping is not compulsory and there are no established rules, though leaving around 10% when you are pleased with the service is customary.

For an Elly8.net booking, standard gratuity is already included in the fixed price. You do not need to add anything at the end of a transfer or a day out. If a driver goes well beyond the ordinary, carrying bags up a long flight of hotel steps or waiting patiently through a lunch that ran two hours over, an extra thank-you is your choice, never an expectation.

Etiquette on a one-road coast

Be ready at the pickup time. On the cliff road, a car often cannot wait at the kerb for long without blocking traffic. Being at the hotel entrance a few minutes early keeps the start calm.

Agree the meeting point at every stop. Set-down points in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are limited, and the car may wait somewhere else. Before you walk off, agree where and when you will meet. Save the driver's number and the desk's number in your phone.

Expect short walks. Every town on the coast is on a slope, and many centres are partly pedestrian. Comfortable shoes are part of the plan.

Say what you need. A slower pace on the bends for anyone prone to car sickness, a stop at a pharmacy, air conditioning up or down, a quiet ride after a long flight: tell the driver or the desk.

Keep alcohol out of the car. Enjoy the wine at lunch or a winery; the car is for getting there and back. Local rules differ, and the driver follows them.

Respect the schedule on hourly bookings. If lunch or a garden visit runs long, message the desk. Time beyond the booked hours is billed at cost.

Mention mobility needs early. If anyone uses a wheelchair or tires easily, tell the desk when you book, so the vehicle and the set-down points are chosen with that in mind.

Choosing the vehicle

The fleet capacities are the guide: a business sedan or First Class Sedan carries three passengers and two bags; a business SUV or First Class SUV six and six; an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve.

On the coast, an SUV is the practical choice for families: more room for luggage, a higher seat for the views and a calmer ride for children on the hairpins. Child and booster seats are fitted on request. A First Class Sedan suits a couple who want a quieter car for an evening in Ravello. The Sprinter is for groups, weddings and reunions; see Sprinter van with driver.

Booking tips for Americans and Canadians

Book early for the summer and for weddings. The coast's high season fills hotels and cars at the same time. Booking ahead fixes the price and the vehicle.

Give the final flight number. Most flights from North America reach Naples through a connection. The driver tracks the final flight, so a delay moves the pickup without a call; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary.

Book the airport departure at the same time. A round trip from NAP to Positano booked together costs from US$535 in a business sedan, and the flight home is the transfer you least want to arrange at the last minute.

Pay in US dollars. The fare is charged to your card in US$ when you book, so there is no exchange surprise at the end of the ride.

Keep the plate calendar in mind if you rent. If part of your trip is self-drive, check the coast municipalities' notices for restricted days; in 2026 the rule ran every day in August and September and on weekends and holidays in June, July and October. The 2027 calendar had not been published when this was written.

Plan around big events. The Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup is being sailed off Naples in the spring and summer of 2027, with the America's Cup Match starting on 10 July 2027. Expect fuller hotels around the bay and busier roads into Naples; book transfers early. See event transportation.

Use the right booking for the day. A transfer for point-to-point, the highlights tour for a compact loop, the full-day chauffeur for a long day, hourly service for a half day or an evening. Our guide to an Amalfi Coast day trip with a private driver shows how each fits.

A week on the coast with a driver: how the bookings fit

Most visitors do not need a car every day. A typical week for a couple or family based in Positano uses a driver for the days the bus and boats cannot do well, and leaves the rest to walking and the water.

  • Day 1, arrival. NAP to Positano, from US$280 in a business sedan or US$365 in a business SUV, met inside arrivals.
  • Day 2, settle in. No car. The beach, the town, a boat along the coast.
  • Day 3, the coast loop. The private highlights tour, from US$360, for Praiano, Amalfi and Ravello.
  • Day 4, Pompeii. The 8-hour day trip from US$665, or a boat day to Capri with the car only to and from the harbour.
  • Day 5, an evening in Ravello. The evening out and event night package, from US$450, for a concert or dinner with the car on standby.
  • Day 6, free.
  • Day 7, departure. Positano to NAP at the same fixed fare as the arrival.

As arithmetic for comparison only, that plan in a business sedan, with Pompeii on day 4, comes to US$2,035 across five bookings, each fixed per vehicle, with nothing to add in cash. Swap or drop days to suit; each booking stands alone.

Staying in touch on the day

Keep one phone with mobile data on throughout the trip. The driver or the 24/7 desk may need to reach you after landing, at a meeting point, or when plans change, and messages are easier than calls on a noisy waterfront. Save the desk's contact from your confirmation email before you fly, and tell us if the number on the booking will not work in Italy.

A driver, a taxi or a rental?

A taxi. The City of Naples publishes fixed fares per car from the city to the coast, such as €145 to Positano and €160 to Ravello, including the airport supplement and luggage, on its taxi service page. For a simple ride from Naples with ordinary bags, that is good value and cheaper than our sedan.

A rental car. Cheaper per day on paper, but subject to the plate rule on restricted days, scarce parking in the towns, and the hairpins. See chauffeur vs renting a car.

A pre-booked driver. Worth it when you want the price fixed in US dollars, a meeting inside arrivals, child seats, a flexible day with stops, an evening in Ravello without checking a plate calendar, or one vehicle for a group. See chauffeur vs taxi and hourly chauffeur.

Business travel on the coast

The coast hosts incentive trips, executive retreats and private events as well as holidays. The corporate roadshow day costs from US$810 in a business sedan to US$1,620 in an Executive Sprinter, and a corporate account adds monthly invoicing, one booking contact for many travellers and NDAs on request. See corporate car service.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a private driver on the Amalfi Coast per hour?

US$90 an hour in a business sedan, US$115 in a business SUV, US$145 in a First Class Sedan, US$135 in a First Class SUV and US$180 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. Prices are per vehicle, include gratuity, and tolls and parking are billed at cost.

Should we tip the driver?

Not necessarily. Italy's tourism portal says tipping is not compulsory, though about 10% is customary for good service. Standard gratuity is already included in every Elly8.net fare, so an extra tip is entirely your choice for exceptional service.

Is the driver also a tour guide?

No. The driver knows the roads, stops and meeting points and can suggest restaurants, but is not a licensed guide. For commentary at Pompeii or in museums, book a licensed guide through the site.

Can a private driver use the coast road on restricted days?

Yes. Under the 2026 ANAS rules published by the Comune di Praiano, taxis and NCC licensed hire cars with driver are exempt from the alternating-plate restriction on the SS163. Private cars, including rentals, are restricted between 10.00 and 18.00 on restricted days.

How far ahead should we book?

As early as your plans allow, especially for summer weekends, weddings and 2027 during the America's Cup in Naples. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, so booking early carries little risk.

Which vehicle is best for a family?

A business SUV or First Class SUV: six passengers and six bags, room for strollers, and a calmer ride on the bends. Ask for child or booster seats when you book and give the children's ages.
