Hamburg sits at the centre of a ring of remarkable towns. Within an hour's drive are the brick Gothic old town of Lübeck, the salt-built streets of Lüneburg and the orchards of the Altes Land; a little further are the island castle of Schwerin, the Hanseatic city of Bremen and the Baltic port of Kiel. With a private driver, any of them becomes a day that starts and ends at your hotel.
This guide sets out seven routes with distances and times routed on a clear road from the Jungfernstieg, a sample schedule for each, and the cost with Elly8.net. Hamburg has no fixed day-trip package on our price list, so day tours run on the full-day chauffeur or an hourly booking, both at fixed prices in US dollars.
What is the best day tour from Hamburg?
For a first visit, Lübeck is the strongest Hamburg day tour: a UNESCO-listed Hanseatic old town about 66 km (41 mi) away, roughly 50 minutes on a clear road. Add the Baltic beach at Travemünde for a full day. Lüneburg suits a shorter outing, and Schwerin with Wismar makes the grandest full day.
The rule we use when planning: keep the total driving to about a third of the day. Every route below fits a full-day chauffeur with time to spare, and the shorter ones fit an hourly booking.

Seven routes at a glance
These are our routed estimates from the Jungfernstieg on a clear road. Weekday traffic on the motorways out of Hamburg adds time, and roadworks are common.
| Route | One-way distance | Clear-road drive | Suggested booking |

| Lübeck, plus Travemünde | 66 km / 41 mi; Travemünde 19 km / 12 mi further | about 50 min; plus 22 min | Full-day chauffeur |
| Lüneburg | 55 km / 34 mi | about 42 min | Hourly (5 to 6 hours) or full day |
| Altes Land (Jork) and Stade | 34 km / 21 mi to Jork; 23 km / 14 mi on to Stade | about 50 min; plus 19 min | Full-day chauffeur |
| Schwerin and Wismar | 110 km / 69 mi; Wismar 32 km / 20 mi further | about 1 hr 27 min; plus 39 min | Full-day chauffeur |
| Bremen | 121 km / 75 mi | about 1 hr 22 min | Full-day chauffeur |
| Kiel and the Baltic | 97 km / 60 mi | about 1 hr 7 min | Full-day chauffeur |
| Blankenese and the Elbe shore | 16 km / 10 mi | about 28 min | Hourly (3-hour minimum) |
Lübeck and Travemünde
The Hanseatic City of Lübeck is a UNESCO World Heritage site, an island old town ringed by water and entered through the brick Holstentor gate. Its churches, merchants' houses and narrow alleys reward a slow walk, and the old town is compact enough to explore on foot while the chauffeur waits.
A sample day. Leave Hamburg at 09:00, Lübeck by 10:00 for the Holstentor, the churches and lunch in the old town, then on to Travemünde, Lübeck's seaside quarter on the Baltic, for a walk on the promenade and the beach before the drive home. Back in Hamburg by about 18:00. Total driving is under two and a half hours.
Lüneburg
South-east of Hamburg, Lüneburg grew rich on salt, and its old streets of stepped brick gables, the water quarter by the river and the great market square survive in remarkable condition. The official Lüneburg tourism site lists guided walks and events.
At about 42 minutes each way, Lüneburg suits a half-day or a relaxed five to six hours on an hourly booking. It is also the gateway to the Lüneburg Heath, the open heathland to the south, which can be added for a longer day.
A sample half-day. Leave Hamburg at 10:00, arrive in Lüneburg before 11:00, walk the market square, the old harbour crane and the brick churches, have lunch in the old town, and be back at your hotel by mid-afternoon. On a five-hour booking in a business sedan the cost is US$425, all-in, as arithmetic from the US$85 hourly rate. It is an easy outing for a jet-lagged second day or for older travellers who prefer short drives.
The Altes Land and Stade
West of the city along the south bank of the Elbe, the Altes Land is a landscape of orchards, dykes and half-timbered farmhouses. In spring the fruit trees blossom; in late summer and autumn the farm shops sell the harvest. The Jork tourism portal covers the villages and the seasons.
Continue to Stade, an old Hanseatic town with a historic harbour and waterfront, described on the Stade tourism site. The Altes Land roads are slower than the motorway, which is part of the pleasure; budget a relaxed full day rather than a rushed afternoon.
Schwerin and Wismar
This is the grandest of the seven. The Schwerin Residence Ensemble, added to the UNESCO list in 2024, centres on Schwerin Castle, the fairy-tale palace on an island in the lake that houses the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The gardens and the old town around it fill a morning.
From Schwerin it is about 39 minutes on a clear road to Wismar, the Baltic port whose old town is listed by UNESCO together with Stralsund as the Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar. Lunch in Wismar, a walk round the market square and the harbour, then home along the motorway. Expect about three and a half hours of driving in total, so start early.
Bremen
Bremen, about 1 hour 22 minutes south-west, is a city in its own right and a full day. The Town Hall and Roland on the Marketplace of Bremen are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Schnoor quarter's tiny lanes and the Böttcherstraße make an easy walking circuit around them. Visitors also look for the statue of the Town Musicians from the Grimm fairy tale beside the Town Hall.
Because Bremen is the furthest of these routes, it works best as a full-day chauffeur with an early start, or as a one-way transfer if you are continuing your trip from there.
Kiel and the Baltic coast
Kiel, about 67 minutes north on a clear road, is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein and one of Germany's great sailing cities. Kiel Week, usually held in June, fills the harbour with yachts and the city with visitors; check the date with Kiel Sailing City before you plan around it. Outside the festival, a day on the fjord, the Baltic beaches nearby and a fish lunch by the water make a calm change from the city.
Closer to home: Blankenese and the Elbe
Not every day tour needs the motorway. Blankenese, about 28 minutes west of the centre, is a former fishing village on a steep riverbank, with lanes and stairways winding down to the Elbe beach. Combine it with the Elbe shore at Övelgönne and the museum harbour, and an afternoon on an hourly booking covers it well. Back in the centre, the Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District is Hamburg's own UNESCO site, best seen on the private city highlights tour.
What a Hamburg day tour costs
Every Elly8.net price for Hamburg is fixed, all-in and per vehicle, never per person. It includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity; tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
| Booking | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class SUV | First Class Sedan | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| By the hour (3-hour minimum) | US$85/hr | US$110/hr | US$130/hr | US$140/hr | US$170/hr |
| Private city highlights tour | US$340 | US$440 | US$520 | US$560 | US$680 |
| Full-day chauffeur | US$630 | US$810 | US$960 | US$1,035 | US$1,255 |
As a guide: Blankenese and Lüneburg fit an hourly booking; Lübeck, the Altes Land, Schwerin, Bremen and Kiel take the full-day chauffeur. As arithmetic for comparison only, a US$1,255 Sprinter full day shared by ten people works out at US$125.50 each, for one vehicle at one price. Timing and pacing
Most travellers from North America reach Hamburg through a European hub and arrive tired. Keep the first day for the city and book the airport transfer, from US$100 in a business sedan to US$260 in an Executive Sprinter, then plan day tours from the second day. Our guide to Hamburg airport to city: private car vs train covers that first ride.
On the day, a 09:00 start avoids the worst of the outbound traffic and gets you into the old towns before the coach groups. In winter, daylight is short in northern Germany, so keep to one destination and head back before dark. In December, the Christmas markets of Lübeck, Lüneburg and Schwerin are a reason to go in themselves, and an evening return in a warm car is welcome.
Day tours before or after a cruise
Hamburg is a major cruise port, and many travellers from North America add a night or two before embarkation or after the ship returns. That is the ideal moment for a day tour. The city's cruise guide describes its terminals at Altona, Steinwerder and the HafenCity, and the same chauffeur who takes you to Lübeck can collect your luggage-laden party from the terminal on the way out of town.
Two patterns work well. On a disembarkation morning, the car meets you at the terminal, the bags go in the back, and you spend the day in Lübeck or Lüneburg before an evening flight or a hotel night. On the day before sailing, a gentle tour of the Altes Land or Blankenese keeps the day relaxed and gets you back in good time. Tell us the ship and the terminal when you book. See cruise port transfers, and for the airport end of the trip, our Hamburg airport transfer guide for North American travellers.
When the train is the better choice
Regional trains connect Hamburg with Lübeck, Lüneburg, Bremen, Schwerin and Kiel, and for one traveller with a day bag they are the economical choice. Day tours by car win when you are a family or a group, when you want two places in one day, such as Schwerin and Wismar or Jork and Stade, when anyone in the party has limited mobility, or when the destination is not near a station, like the orchards of the Altes Land.
Choosing the vehicle
Fleet capacities are fixed: a Business Sedan or First Class Sedan carries up to three passengers and two bags, a Business SUV or First Class SUV up to six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to twelve passengers and twelve bags. On a day tour, comfort matters more than luggage; four adults are far happier in an SUV than in a sedan for a long day. Child seats are fitted on request. See the fleet and private city tours.
Rides in Hamburg are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a day tour from Hamburg with a private driver?
A full-day chauffeur costs from US$630 in a business sedan, US$810 in a business SUV and US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle and all-in. Shorter outings run by the hour from US$85 in a business sedan, with a 3-hour minimum. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
How far is Lübeck from Hamburg?
About 66 km (41 mi) from central Hamburg, roughly 50 minutes on a clear road. Travemünde on the Baltic is about 19 km (12 mi) further, around 22 minutes, so the two combine easily into one full day with time for lunch and a walk by the sea.
Can we see Schwerin and Wismar in one day?
Yes, with an early start. Schwerin is about 110 km (69 mi) from Hamburg and Wismar about 32 km (20 mi) beyond it, by our routed estimates. Expect about three and a half hours of driving in total, which leaves a good day on the ground.
Is there a fixed Hamburg day-trip package?
Not on the Hamburg price list. Day tours run on the full-day chauffeur or the hourly rate, both fixed in advance. For one-way drives that end elsewhere, the web booker returns a fixed price per vehicle before you pay, including any stops you add on the way.
Does the chauffeur guide us at the sites?
The chauffeur drives, waits and knows the routes, but is not a licensed guide. For detailed commentary in Lübeck, Schwerin Castle or Bremen, book a local guided walk or audio guide, and the chauffeur handles everything between stops, including timing the return to Hamburg.
Can we book a day tour for a large family?
Yes. An Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve passengers and twelve bags as one vehicle at one price. Request child or booster seats when you book and give the children's ages, and the partner fits them before pickup, so the car is ready at the hotel door.
