A Dublin Airport transfer for North American travellers has two quite different halves. On arrival, you land after an overnight flight, clear Irish passport control, collect your bags and need to get about 17 km (11 mi) into the city, roughly 25 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate. On departure, if you are flying to the United States, you clear US immigration and customs in Dublin before you board, which means arriving at the airport much earlier than you would for a domestic flight at home.
Both halves can be done by coach, taxi or a pre-booked car, and there is no train to the airport. This guide is organised by the trip rather than by the vehicle: what to do before you fly, what happens when you land, how to plan your first day, and how to time the transfer back for preclearance. Prices are in US dollars and fixed: from US$120 per vehicle in a Business Sedan to US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, the same in either direction.
What is the best Dublin Airport transfer for travellers from North America?
For a solo traveller with light bags, the Dublin Express coach, from €9 online, is quick and cheap. For couples a taxi at €30-45 is fair. For families, groups, early-morning arrivals and anyone flying home with US preclearance to plan around, a pre-booked car from US$120, met inside arrivals and fixed in US dollars, is the simplest.
We compare the coach, bus and taxi in depth elsewhere: see our guides to getting into the city with luggage and the Dublin Airport taxi. This guide focuses on the parts of the trip that are specific to travellers from the US and Canada.
Rides in Dublin are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Before you fly: what to book and what to tell us
Book from home, in dollars. Elly8.net fares are charged in US dollars when you book, so the amount on your card statement matches the price you saw. Dublin Airport to St Stephen's Green is US$120 in a Business Sedan, US$160 in a Business SUV or Van, US$195 in a First Class SUV, US$210 in a First Class Sedan and US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, including the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Give us the flight number, not just the time. The chauffeur tracks the flight, so an early or late landing is absorbed automatically. Overnight flights from the East Coast sometimes arrive ahead of schedule, and the tracking catches that too.
Tell us the real luggage count. Two large bags fit a sedan; six fit an SUV; twelve fit a Sprinter, according to our fleet page. Golf bags, strollers and car seats count.
Ask for child seats now. Request child or booster seats at booking with the children's ages, and the partner fits them before pickup. It saves carrying seats across the Atlantic.
Book the return at the same time. The round trip from Dublin Airport to St Stephen's Green and back is US$230 in a Business Sedan, US$305 in a Business SUV and US$600 in an Executive Sprinter, slightly less than two one-way fares.
Travelling for work? A corporate account puts every Dublin trip on one monthly invoice in US dollars, with the same desk handling your colleagues in London, Paris and New York, and NDAs are available on request.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card. If your flight is cancelled or delayed by a day, message the 24/7 desk and we move the booking.
Landing in Dublin: from the aircraft to the car
Most flights from North America arrive at Dublin in the early morning, often in a cluster, so passport control can be busy. The sequence is the same at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2:
- Irish passport control. Have your passport and accommodation details ready.
- Baggage reclaim. Collect your cases; report any missing bag at the airline desk before you leave the hall.
- Customs and the arrivals hall. Walk through into arrivals.
- Meet your chauffeur. With a pre-booked car, the chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall holding a name board. Waiting is complimentary after a tracked landing, so a long queue at passport control does not cost you anything. Our meet and greet page has the details.
If you are taking a taxi instead, the rank is directly outside each terminal with dispatchers on hand, according to Dublin Airport. The Dublin Express coach leaves from the bus zones outside each terminal, and its timetable starts very early, with a first coach listed at 03:05.
Your first day: what works after an overnight flight
Hotel rooms are often not ready at 8am. A few ways to use the first morning:
- Straight to the hotel, leave the bags, and walk to breakfast. The simplest option, and the one most travellers choose.
- A short tour with the bags in the car. A four-hour private city highlights tour from arrivals, from US$340 in a Business Sedan, covers Trinity, Georgian Dublin and St James's Gate while you wait for check-in. See our Dublin private tour by car guide.
- Straight out of Dublin. The airport is on the M50 and M1, so a chauffeur can head west or north without entering the city: about 2 hours 30 minutes to Galway, or about 1 hour 50 minutes to Belfast, on a clear road by our routing. Our guides to Dublin to Galway and Dublin to Belfast cover those drives; note that Belfast is in the UK, and US and Canadian visitors usually need a UK ETA.
- Straight to a meeting. Business travellers can keep the car by the hour, at US$85 an hour in a Business Sedan with a 3-hour minimum, with the bags locked inside until check-in. See corporate car service.
Flying home: US preclearance and how early to leave
Dublin is one of the few airports outside North America with US preclearance. According to Dublin Airport's guide to travelling to the USA:
- US flights depart from Terminal 2. The US Preclearance facility, operated by US personnel, is on the ground floor of Terminal 2, beyond security.
- You clear US immigration, customs and agriculture inspection in Dublin, so you arrive in the US as a domestic passenger and avoid the immigration queues there. Most direct US flights include preclearance, but not all, so check with your airline.
- Arrive three hours before a long-haul flight, and allow more time with checked bags or a group.
- Peak security times in Terminal 2 run from 05:00 to 12:00, which covers most transatlantic departures.
- Mobile Passport Control lets you complete part of the US immigration process before you reach preclearance.
Flights to Canada do not go through US preclearance, but the airport's three-hour advice for long-haul flights still applies; check your terminal with the airline.
When to book the pickup
Working back from the departure time, with the airport's three-hour advice, a clear-road drive of about 25 minutes from St Stephen's Green and a margin for traffic, these are the pickup times we usually suggest from the city centre:
| Flight departs | Be at Terminal 2 by | Suggested city-centre pickup | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10:00 | 07:00 | about 06:30 | Inside the 05:00-12:00 security peak |
| 11:30 | 08:30 | about 07:45 | Weekday rush hour; allow extra |
| 13:00 | 10:00 | about 09:15 | Still within the peak |
| 15:30 | 12:30 | about 12:00 | Lighter traffic, after the peak |
| Group or lots of checked bags | add 30 to 60 minutes | add 30 to 60 minutes | The airport advises extra time |
These are our suggestions, not airport rules; your chauffeur confirms the pickup the evening before. From further afield, add the drive: Galway to Dublin Airport is about 2 hours 30 minutes and Belfast about 1 hour 50 minutes on a clear road, by our routing.
The car drops you at the set-down zone in front of Terminal 2, a few steps from check-in, as described on Dublin Airport's driving page. The return fare is the same fixed price as the arrival.
Money, phones and small practicalities
Currency. Ireland uses the euro, so coach tickets, taxi meters and attraction tickets are in euros, while your Elly8.net booking stays in US dollars. Onboard Dublin Express tickets are card-only, according to the operator, so you do not need cash for the coach either.
Your phone. Make sure your phone works on arrival, or connect to the airport Wi-Fi, so the desk and the chauffeur can reach you if the flight is diverted or you are held up at passport control.
Getting around afterwards. If you plan to use public transport during your stay, a TFI Leap Visitor Card is sold at convenience stores in both terminals and works on Dublin's buses, the Luas tram and DART trains, according to Dublin Airport's bus page.
Coach, taxi or car on the way home
The same honest comparison applies in reverse. A solo traveller staying near a coach stop can take the Dublin Express and be at the terminal quickly. A couple can hail a taxi or order one by app, which adds the €3 pre-booking fee to the meter. For a 6am pickup with a family and five cases, or a group of eight with golf bags, a pre-booked car or Sprinter that is already arranged is the least stressful option, because you are not depending on finding the right taxi at that hour. Our chauffeur vs taxi comparison sets out the general case.
Shannon, private jets and other arrivals
Some itineraries start or finish in the west at Shannon Airport, which is closer to Galway, Clare and Limerick, and is close to Adare Manor in County Limerick, where the Ryder Cup is played in September 2027. Shannon pickups and Dublin to Shannon transfers are quoted in the web booker. For business aircraft, give us the handler and tail number and the chauffeur meets you there; see private jet and FBO transfers. Travel agents booking for North American clients can use a travel agent account.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a Dublin Airport transfer to the city centre?
An Elly8.net transfer to St Stephen's Green is a fixed US$120 in a Business Sedan, US$160 in a Business SUV or Van, US$195 in a First Class SUV, US$210 in a First Class Sedan and US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. The same price applies from the city to the airport.
How early should I leave Dublin for a flight to the US?
Dublin Airport recommends arriving three hours before a long-haul flight, more with checked bags or a group, because US flights from Terminal 2 include US preclearance. From the city centre, a pickup about three and a half to three and three-quarter hours before departure is usually right, allowing the longer lead time in weekday rush hour.
Where do I meet my driver at Dublin Airport?
In the arrivals hall of your terminal, after passport control, baggage reclaim and customs. The chauffeur holds a name board and tracks your flight, and waiting is complimentary after a tracked landing, so you do not need to rush through a busy passport hall.
Is there a train from Dublin Airport?
No. Dublin Airport has no rail link, so transfers are by coach, bus, taxi or car. The Dublin Express coach is from €9 one-way online, a taxi is about €30-45 to the city by the airport's estimate, and a pre-booked car is from US$120 per vehicle.
Do I need to tip the driver?
Elly8.net fares already include a standard gratuity, so there is nothing to add or calculate at the end of the ride, and no need to carry euros for it. If a chauffeur goes well beyond the booking, any extra is entirely your choice.
Can you take us straight from Dublin Airport to Galway or Belfast?
Yes. The airport is on the M50 and M1, so the chauffeur can drive west or north without entering the city: about 2 hours 30 minutes to Galway or 1 hour 50 minutes to Belfast on a clear road. These transfers are quoted as fixed prices in the web booker.
