Dublin to Belfast is about 169 km (105 mi) by road from St Stephen's Green to Belfast City Hall, roughly 2 hours on a clear road by our routed estimate, almost all of it on the M1 motorway and its Northern Ireland continuation. The Enterprise train covers the same distance between Dublin Connolly and Belfast Grand Central in a little over two hours, with departures about every hour.
For one or two travellers going city centre to city centre, the Enterprise is the easy choice, and this guide says so plainly. A private car comes into its own when you are travelling as a family or group with luggage, going straight from Dublin Airport, stopping at Newgrange on the way, or carrying on the same day to the Giant's Causeway. Before either, North American visitors need one piece of paperwork that many do not expect: a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation.
Is it better to take the train or a car from Dublin to Belfast?
For one or two travellers with light bags going between city centres, the Enterprise train is better value: about two hours, roughly hourly, fares from about £15 one-way online from Belfast. A private car wins for families and groups with luggage, Dublin Airport pickups, stops at Newgrange or onward trips to the Causeway coast.
The two options take about the same time on the move. The difference is everything around the journey: getting to Connolly with your bags, the walk or taxi at the Belfast end, and whether you want to stop anywhere in between.
Rides from Dublin are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Before you go: the UK ETA and the open border
Belfast is in Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, while Dublin is in the Republic of Ireland. There is no hard border on the road or the railway, but UK entry rules still apply to you.
According to the UK government's ETA guidance, visitors from the USA, Canada and many other countries usually need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to travel to the UK. An ETA costs £20 and lets you visit for up to six months. The exemption for travel from Ireland applies only to people who live in Ireland, so a US or Canadian visitor on holiday in Dublin who drives or takes the train to Belfast needs an ETA, and so does each child travelling with you. Apply through the official GOV.UK service, not a third-party site.
Two smaller changes once you cross: Northern Ireland uses pounds sterling rather than euros, and your phone may switch to a UK network. Your Elly8.net booking stays in US dollars on both sides of the border.

The Enterprise train: a fair look
The Enterprise is a good train. Translink lists departures every hour from Belfast Grand Central to Dublin Connolly, 15 times a day Monday to Saturday from 6am and eight times on Sundays, and the timetable runs in both directions through the day. The morning Connolly to Belfast services we checked in Irish Rail's live timetable were scheduled at 2 hours 8 minutes and 2 hours 18 minutes. There is a standard class with seat reservations and an Enterprise Plus coach with an on-board host and extra legroom on many services.
Fares are modest. Translink's online fares from Belfast Grand Central start at £14.99 one-way on the cheapest ticket, rising to £16.99 for a fully flexible single, and you can book until 80 minutes before departure. Tickets bought online are collected from a machine at the station.
The trade-offs are practical. Connolly is north of the river, about 11 minutes by road from St Stephen's Green, so most visitors need a taxi or a tram ride with their bags to reach it. At the Belfast end, you still need to get from Grand Central to your hotel. For two people with a case each, that is easy. For a family of five with luggage, it becomes three separate journeys, two of them by taxi.
The car: door to door, with stops
The road route is simple: north on the M1 past Drogheda and Dundalk, across the border near Newry and up the A1 and M1 into Belfast. Tolls include the M1 Gormanston to Monasterboice section in Ireland, listed on Transport Infrastructure Ireland's toll locations page; on an Elly8.net booking, tolls are billed at cost and listed on the receipt.
What the car adds is flexibility. The chauffeur collects you from your hotel door or from the arrivals hall at Dublin Airport, loads the bags, and drops you at the door of your Belfast hotel or your first meeting. There is no change of vehicle at either end, and you can stop on the way.
Families get the most out of this. Child and booster seats are fitted before pickup if you request them at booking, the chauffeur helps with the cases at both ends, and nobody has to carry a car seat through two railway stations. If your flight from North America lands late, the chauffeur tracks it, and waiting is complimentary after a tracked landing, so a delayed arrival does not unravel the plan for the drive north.
Stops worth making on the way north
Brú na Bóinne and Newgrange. The Boyne Valley's passage tombs are just off the M1 near Drogheda, about 54 km (34 mi) from central Dublin. According to Heritage Ireland, access to Newgrange and Knowth is by guided tour only from the visitor centre, by shuttle bus, and pre-booking is essential because ticket availability is very limited. Going via Brú na Bóinne makes the trip about 179 km (111 mi) and 2 hours 15 minutes of driving, plus your time on site.
Carlingford. The village on Carlingford Lough sits just off the route near the border. Detouring there makes the drive about 194 km (121 mi) and around 2 hours 35 minutes by our routing.
Arriving in Belfast
Most first-time visitors spend at least one day in the city before heading for the coast. Titanic Belfast stands beside the Titanic Slipways, the Harland & Wolff Drawing Offices and the Hamilton Graving Dock, where the ship was designed, built and launched, and it is the visit most travellers put first. A car that drops you at the door, and collects you afterwards for the drive to your hotel or the coast, saves a scramble for taxis in the Titanic Quarter. Elly8.net does not have a published Belfast price list, so cars within Northern Ireland are quoted in the web booker.
Many visitors go north specifically for the Causeway coast. From Belfast it is about 98 km (61 mi) to the Giant's Causeway by the direct route, or a longer coast-road day; our Dublin to Giant's Causeway guide covers that drive in detail.
What a Dublin to Belfast car costs
Elly8.net prices are fixed, all-in and per vehicle, in US dollars, and include the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
One way. A Dublin hotel or Dublin Airport to Belfast transfer is quoted as a fixed price in the web booker before you pay. Our city-to-city car service page explains how long-distance transfers work.
A day trip or a business day in Belfast. For a return day, book a chauffeur by the hour at US$85 an hour in a Business Sedan, US$110 in a Business SUV, US$130 in a First Class SUV, US$140 in a First Class Sedan or US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. Ten hours in a Business Sedan is US$850 as arithmetic from that rate. For a day of meetings, the 10-hour corporate roadshow day costs from US$765 in a Business Sedan to US$1,530 in an Executive Sprinter, with one chauffeur holding the car between appointments; tell the desk the Belfast itinerary when you book.
| Vehicle | Seats and large bags | Hourly | 10 hours by the hour (arithmetic) | Corporate roadshow day, 10 hr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 and 2 | US$85 | US$850 | US$765 |
| Business SUV or Van | 6 and 6 | US$110 | US$1,100 | US$990 |
| First Class SUV | 6 and 6 | US$130 | US$1,300 | US$1,170 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 and 2 | US$140 | US$1,400 | US$1,260 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 and 12 | US$170 | US$1,700 | US$1,530 |
For a family of five, compare the train fares for five people plus a taxi at each end with one SUV door to door; the gap is often smaller than it looks, and the car removes two transfers with luggage. For one traveller, the train is clearly cheaper, and we would book it.
Belfast back to Dublin Airport for a flight home
Many North American itineraries end in Dublin even when the trip finishes in the north, because Dublin has US preclearance. Dublin Airport runs US flights from Terminal 2, recommends arriving three hours before a long-haul flight, more with checked bags or a group, and lists the Terminal 2 security peak as 05:00 to 12:00.
The drive from central Belfast to Dublin Airport is about 158 km (98 mi), roughly 1 hour 50 minutes on a clear road by our routing, and it never enters Dublin city. For a midday flight, a Belfast pickup about five hours before departure leaves a sensible margin for the M1 and the airport approach. The train is less convenient for this leg: it arrives at Connolly in the city centre, and you then need a coach or taxi back out to the airport with your bags.
If your group is large, the Executive Sprinter carries twelve people and twelve large bags from a Belfast hotel to the Terminal 2 kerb in one vehicle, with the price fixed in US dollars in advance.
Business travel between Dublin and Belfast
Companies with offices in both cities move people up and down the M1 regularly. A corporate car service booking gives a chauffeur who waits through meetings and brings the team back, and a corporate account adds monthly invoicing and one desk for every Elly8.net city. NDAs are available on request. For multi-meeting days, see our roadshow chauffeur page.
