Dublin to Galway is about 209 km (130 mi) by road from St Stephen's Green to Eyre Square, roughly 2 hours 30 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate. Almost all of it is motorway: west out of the city, the M4 across the flat midlands, then the M6 past Athlone and Ballinasloe into Galway. From Dublin Airport the distance is similar, about 216 km (134 mi), and the drive takes about the same time because the airport sits next to the M50.
For a traveller going to Galway city and staying there, the train is a genuinely good option and we say so below. A private car makes most sense when Galway is one stop on a longer west-coast trip, when you want to break the journey at Clonmacnoise, when you land at Dublin Airport and want to go straight west without a trip into the city, or when there are enough of you that one vehicle is simpler than four train tickets and two taxis at each end.
How long does it take to drive from Dublin to Galway?
About 2 hours 30 minutes on a clear road, covering roughly 209 km (130 mi) from central Dublin by our routed estimate. Leaving the city after the morning rush, around 9:30am, avoids the slowest part of the trip. Add about 40 minutes of driving, plus time on site, if you stop at the monastic site of Clonmacnoise.
The only slow stretch on a normal day is getting out of Dublin. Morning traffic is mostly heading into the city, so a mid-morning departure westbound moves well, but the M50 ring road and the western suburbs can be heavy at both weekday peaks. Once you are on the M4 beyond the suburbs, the motorway usually flows freely.
Rides from Dublin are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
The route, step by step
All distances and times below are our routed estimates on a clear road; your chauffeur adjusts for traffic on the day.
| Leg | Distance | Clear-road time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| St Stephen's Green to Athlone | about 125 km (78 mi) | about 1 hr 35 min | M4 then M6; the natural halfway point |
| Athlone to Galway | about 85 km (53 mi) | about 1 hr | M6 past Ballinasloe |
| Dublin Airport to Galway, direct | about 216 km (134 mi) | about 2 hr 30 min | M50 to the M4, no city driving |
| St Stephen's Green to Galway via Clonmacnoise | about 239 km (149 mi) | about 3 hr 10 min of driving | Leaves the M6 near Athlone for the Shannon |
| Galway to Kylemore Abbey, Connemara | about 78 km (49 mi) | about 1 hr 15 min | The obvious next day |
Tolls are part of this drive. Transport Infrastructure Ireland's list of toll locations includes the M4 Kilcock-Enfield-Kinnegad motorway and the N6 Galway-Ballinasloe road, both on the route, plus the M50 barrier-free toll if the route from the airport uses it. On an Elly8.net booking, tolls are billed at cost and listed on the receipt, never marked up.
Driving it yourself
Many North American visitors rent a car for the west of Ireland, and the motorway section to Galway is the easy part: wide, well signed and quiet outside the peaks. The harder parts are Dublin's streets on the way out and Galway's compact centre on the way in, both on the left-hand side of the road, followed by narrow country roads in Connemara and the Burren. If you plan to rent, a common compromise is a chauffeur from Dublin to Galway and a rental collected in Galway for the rural days. Our chauffeur vs car rental comparison sets out the trade-offs.
The stop that is worth the detour: Clonmacnoise
The drive to Galway is efficient rather than scenic; most of the midlands is farmland seen from a motorway. The exception is Clonmacnoise, a short detour south of the M6 near Athlone. According to Heritage Ireland, St Ciarán founded his monastery on the banks of the River Shannon in the 6th century, and Heritage Ireland lists two round towers, three high crosses, nine churches and more than 700 early Christian grave slabs, with the original high crosses displayed in the visitor centre's exhibition.
Going via Clonmacnoise turns the drive into about 239 km (149 mi) and around 3 hours 10 minutes of driving, so with an hour on site you arrive in Galway roughly four and a half hours after leaving Dublin. That is a comfortable, unhurried day, and it breaks up a drive that otherwise has very little to look at. Athlone itself, on the Shannon at the halfway point, is the practical lunch and coffee stop if you are going direct.
By train: a fair comparison
Irish Rail runs intercity trains between Dublin Heuston and Galway, and the scheduled journey is about 2 hours 30 minutes; the early-morning Galway to Heuston service we checked in Irish Rail's live timetable was scheduled at 2 hours 34 minutes. Timetables for the route are on Irish Rail's timetable pages. Direct coaches to Galway also leave from the bus zones at Dublin Airport, as listed on the airport's bus page.
| Option | Door-to-door reality | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train, Heuston to Galway | about 2 hr 30 min on the train, plus getting to Heuston and from the Galway station to your hotel | Carry it yourself through two stations | One or two travellers staying in Galway city |
| Coach from Dublin Airport | Direct from the airport, no city transfer | Stowed under the coach | Budget travellers landing at DUB |
| Rental car | about 2 hr 30 min, plus pickup and return | Boot space of the car you rent | Travellers who want to self-drive the west |
| Elly8.net chauffeur | about 2 hr 30 min door to door, stops wherever you like | 2 to 12 large bags depending on the vehicle | Families, groups, airport-to-Galway, a day with stops |
Our honest verdict: for one person, or a couple with a case each, staying in central Galway, the train is comfortable, relaxing and much cheaper than a car. The calculation changes when you add the transfers at each end with luggage, children, a stop at Clonmacnoise, or a party of five or more, at which point one car with a chauffeur is simpler and often closer in total cost than it first looks.
What a driver from Dublin to Galway costs
Elly8.net prices are fixed, all-in and per vehicle, in US dollars, and include the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. There are three ways to book this trip.
A one-way transfer. A Dublin to Galway transfer, from a city hotel or straight from Dublin Airport, is quoted as a fixed price in the web booker. Enter the two addresses and the vehicle, and the price appears before you pay. Our city-to-city car service page explains how long-distance transfers work.
A day with stops, by the hour. If you want the chauffeur to wait at Clonmacnoise, take you on to Galway and then into Connemara, book a chauffeur by the hour at US$85 an hour in a Business Sedan, US$110 in a Business SUV, US$130 in a First Class SUV, US$140 in a First Class Sedan or US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum and up to 12 hours at checkout.
A Galway day trip and back to Dublin. A same-day return is a long day: five hours of driving with time in Galway in between. The 8-hour full-day chauffeur, from US$630 in a Business Sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, works only if you are happy with about three hours in the city. Most travellers prefer ten hours by the hour, which at US$85 an hour is US$850 in a Business Sedan or US$1,700 in an Executive Sprinter, as arithmetic from the published hourly rate.
For a group, the per-vehicle price helps. Ten travellers sharing an Executive Sprinter for a ten-hour day works out at US$170 each, as arithmetic for comparison only; the fare is per vehicle, with luggage space for twelve large bags.
Whichever way you book, the same service standards apply. Airport pickups are flight-tracked, the chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board, waiting is complimentary after a tracked landing, and child or booster seats are fitted before pickup if you request them at booking, which saves carrying car seats across the Atlantic for a single road trip.
| Vehicle | Seats and large bags | Hourly rate | 10 hours by the hour (arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 and 2 | US$85 | US$850 |
| Business SUV or Van | 6 and 6 | US$110 | US$1,100 |
| First Class SUV | 6 and 6 | US$130 | US$1,300 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 and 2 | US$140 | US$1,400 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 and 12 | US$170 | US$1,700 |
Galway as part of a longer trip
Galway works best as a base rather than a day trip. Discover Ireland's Galway guide points visitors to the city itself, to Connemara and Kylemore Abbey, and to Inis Mór and the Aran Islands. Kylemore, a Benedictine abbey in Connemara with a Victorian walled garden, is about 78 km (49 mi) from Galway, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by our routed estimate.
The Cliffs of Moher are also within reach of Galway, about 76 km (47 mi) by the coast road through Ballyvaughan and around 1 hour 20 minutes by our routing; the cliffs' own visitor information puts the drive at about 90 minutes. That makes Galway the natural overnight for anyone combining the two; our guide to Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher sets out how to build that trip.
A common shape for a first visit from North America:
- Day 1: Land at Dublin Airport, chauffeur straight to Galway via Clonmacnoise, check in by mid-afternoon.
- Day 2: Connemara and Kylemore by the hour, back to Galway for dinner.
- Day 3: The Burren and the Cliffs of Moher, then on to Clare, Limerick or back to Galway.
- Last day: Fly home from Shannon, or return to Dublin for the flight and US preclearance.
If you are spending your first nights in Dublin instead, our Dublin day trips with a private driver guide covers the shorter runs to Wicklow, the Boyne Valley and Kilkenny.
Galway back to Dublin Airport for a flight home
The return leg needs more planning than the outbound, because US-bound flights from Dublin include US preclearance. Dublin Airport runs its US flights from Terminal 2, recommends arriving three hours before a long-haul departure, more with checked bags or a group, and lists peak security times in Terminal 2 as 05:00 to 12:00, which is exactly when most transatlantic flights leave.
Work backwards from the departure time. The drive from Galway to Dublin Airport is about 2 hours 30 minutes on a clear road by our routing, and we add a margin for the M50 approach, so a chauffeur collecting you in Galway about six hours before a midday flight is a sensible plan. For a morning departure, many travellers spend the last night near Dublin Airport or in the city instead, and book the short airport transfer, a fixed US$120 in a Business Sedan or US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, the same price in either direction.
The alternative is to fly home from Shannon, closer to Galway, Clare and Limerick; any Shannon address can be priced in the web booker.
Corporate and group travel to Galway
For business travellers with meetings or site visits in Galway, a corporate car service booking puts a chauffeur at the airport or the hotel, waits through the meetings and brings the team back the same evening, invoiced monthly through a corporate account. For conference delegates, wedding guests or a family reunion, an Executive Sprinter with driver moves up to twelve people and their bags in one vehicle.

Is the train or a car better from Dublin to Galway?
For one or two travellers staying in Galway city, the train from Heuston is comfortable and good value, at about 2 hours 30 minutes. A car is better for families and groups with luggage, for trips straight from Dublin Airport, and for days that include Clonmacnoise or carry on into Connemara.

Yes. The chauffeur tracks your flight, meets you in arrivals with a name board and drives straight to Galway, about 216 km (134 mi) and around 2 hours 30 minutes, without going through Dublin city. Waiting is complimentary after a tracked landing, which helps after a long passport queue.
Is Galway a good day trip from Dublin?
It is possible but long, with about five hours of driving in the day. Most visitors enjoy Galway more as an overnight stop, combined with Connemara or the Cliffs of Moher. If you only have one free day in Dublin, Wicklow or the Boyne Valley are closer and less tiring.
