Geneva to Zermatt takes about four hours by train from Geneva Airport, according to Zermatt Tourism, and trains run into the car-free village every half hour. By road, the trip from Geneva's lakefront to Täsch, the last village cars can reach, is about 232 km (144 mi), roughly 2 hours 52 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate; from Täsch the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway shuttle covers the last 5 km in 12 minutes.
The train is the default for good reason: it ends in the centre of Zermatt, needs no change of vehicle at Täsch, and costs far less than a private car for one or two people. A private car is worth it for families and ski groups with heavy luggage, for arrivals straight off a transatlantic flight, and for travellers who want stops on the way at Lavaux, Montreux or Chillon. One-way Elly8.net transfers to Täsch are quoted on the web booker at a fixed price per vehicle; Geneva Airport to the lakefront starts from US$125.
Is the train or a private car better from Geneva to Zermatt?
For one or two travellers with manageable luggage, the train is better: about four hours from Geneva Airport, ending in central Zermatt, with trains into Zermatt every half hour. A private car to Täsch, then the 12-minute shuttle, suits families, ski groups, heavy bags, late arrivals and anyone who wants stops along Lake Geneva.
The key fact is that no car drives into Zermatt. Zermatt Tourism says private vehicles are only allowed as far as Täsch, and travellers continue by train, taxi or limousine service. It also warns of large fines for driving to Zermatt without authorisation, and notes that the Täsch to Zermatt road is closed to public traffic and that only taxis licensed for that road may use it. A chauffeur from Geneva therefore drives you to Täsch, not to your hotel door.
The train: one ticket, centre to centre
Zermatt Tourism's arrival page puts Zermatt about three and a half hours from Zurich Airport and four hours from Geneva or Basel airports by train, with trains running into Zermatt every half hour. The train runs straight into the car-free village and ends at Zermatt Bahnhofplatz, so you step off in the centre. Timetables are on SBB and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, and the tourism office notes that the Glacier Express is another way to arrive.
The journey starts conveniently too. Genève Aéroport's railway station is directly beneath the terminal, with frequent trains to Genève-Cornavin and direct trains along Lake Geneva to Lausanne and Montreux.
Luggage on the train. If heavy bags are the only reason you are hesitating, look at SBB's luggage services. Zermatt Tourism mentions the SBB luggage service for checking bags through to Zermatt, and SBB's flight luggage page covers travellers flying to or from Geneva, with prices from CHF 24.
The road: Geneva to Täsch
All figures below are routed estimates on a clear road from the public OSRM engine. Winter weather, Saturday changeover traffic in the Valais and roadworks can add a good deal of time.
| From | To | Routed distance | Clear-road drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geneva lakefront | Täsch, Matterhorn Terminal | 231.7 km / 144.0 mi | about 2 h 52 min |
| Geneva Airport (GVA) | Täsch | 230.9 km / 143.5 mi | about 3 h 2 min |
| Geneva lakefront | Lausanne | 64.0 km / 39.8 mi | about 49 min |
| Geneva lakefront | Montreux | 93.7 km / 58.2 mi | about 1 h 9 min |
| Geneva lakefront | Sion | 160.2 km / 99.5 mi | about 1 h 51 min |
| Visp | Täsch | 30.1 km / 18.7 mi | about 35 min |
| Täsch | Zermatt by shuttle train | about 5 km | 12 min, every 20 min |
The route follows the A1 motorway along Lake Geneva towards Lausanne, then the A9 past Montreux and up the Rhône valley through the Valais, past Sion and on to Visp, where the road turns south into the Mattertal for the last stretch to Täsch. It stays in Switzerland the whole way, so there is no border to cross after the airport. The vehicle's Swiss motorway vignette is the operator's responsibility, not yours.
The Täsch handover
At Täsch the car stops and the last leg begins. According to Zermatt Tourism, the Matterhorn Terminal there has 2,100 covered parking spaces and direct transfer to the shuttle trains inside the building; shuttles run every 20 minutes and take 12 minutes to the centre of Zermatt. More than 1,000 further spaces are offered by private providers, including taxi firms and hotels, and licensed taxis can carry you on from Täsch to Zermatt. The tourism office's car park and taxi page lists several of those providers.
What this means for a chauffeured trip: the chauffeur drops you and your luggage at the Matterhorn Terminal for the shuttle, or at a point agreed with your Zermatt taxi. Once you arrive, Zermatt Tourism lists e-taxis, a free e-bus with two routes and horse-drawn carriages for getting around the village, so ask your hotel how best to reach it from the station. Plan the handover when you book and the chauffeur times the arrival accordingly.
What the third parties charge
Fair comparisons include other people's prices. Zermatt Tourism's airport transfer listings show taxi transfers between an airport and Zermatt offered by local firms, with one listed from CHF 775. Those firms are licensed for the Täsch to Zermatt road, so their cars can go further than any outside operator. A rail ticket costs far less than either. One-way Elly8.net transfers to Täsch are priced on the web booker before you confirm, fixed per vehicle, and include the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
| Option | Price | Ends at | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train from Geneva Airport | SBB fare per person, or a Swiss Travel Pass | Zermatt centre, about 4 h | Solo travellers and couples, lighter luggage |
| Zermatt taxi transfer from an airport | Listed by Zermatt Tourism, one from CHF 775 | Zermatt | Door to door into the village |
| Elly8.net to Täsch, business sedan | Quoted on the web booker, fixed per vehicle | Täsch, then 12-min shuttle | Couples with luggage, stops on the way |
| Elly8.net to Täsch, Business SUV | Quoted on the web booker | Täsch | Families, six seats and six bags |
| Elly8.net to Täsch, Executive Sprinter | Quoted on the web booker | Täsch | Ski groups up to twelve with twelve bags |
When the train is the right choice
For one or two travellers with a suitcase each and no strong reason to stop, the train is the sensible choice. It is cheaper by a wide margin, it delivers you to the middle of Zermatt instead of Täsch, and it removes the handover altogether. Visitors with a Swiss Travel Pass may already have the trip covered. We would not push a private car on anyone whose trip looks like that. The time on board is relaxed, the views along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley are part of the holiday, and there is no handover to plan at the end.
When a private car is worth it
Straight off a transatlantic flight with ski bags. Four hours of trains with a change, ski bags, boot bags and children is a hard start to a holiday. A chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board, tracks the flight, loads everything once, and unloads once at Täsch. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. Tell us whether you will exit Geneva Airport on the Swiss side or the French side; most guests heading into Switzerland are met on the Swiss side. Genève Aéroport has a France Sector for travel between France and Switzerland, and only ticketed passengers may move between the sectors inside the building, so the meeting point needs to be settled in advance. Our Geneva airport transfer page explains how the two sides work.
Families. Child and booster seats are fitted on request. A Business SUV or van seats six with six bags. See the fleet for seats and luggage by class.
Ski groups. An Executive Sprinter seats twelve with twelve bags, one vehicle at one fixed price for the whole group. See group transportation and Sprinter van with driver.
Late arrivals. An evening landing can leave you racing the last convenient connections; a booked car runs to your landing time.
Stops on the way. The road passes some of the loveliest country in Switzerland, and the train does not stop where you would like it to.
Stops along Lake Geneva and the Valais
Lavaux. Between Lausanne and Montreux, the Lavaux vineyard terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage site. A short stop for the view, or a tasting, fits the first hour of the drive; the chauffeur follows local rules on everything inside the vehicle.
Chillon. Just beyond Montreux, Chillon Castle describes itself as Switzerland's most visited historical monument, set on the shore of the lake. An hour there breaks the journey neatly.
Sion. About 1 hour 51 minutes from Geneva by our routed estimate, the Valais capital is a natural lunch stop before the last part of the drive.
Winter, weather and timing
Most Zermatt transfers happen in the ski season, and that is when the road is least predictable. The motorway section along the lake and up the Rhône valley is a major route, but the final climb into the Mattertal is a mountain road, and snow can slow it. Saturdays are changeover days in many Alpine resorts, which adds traffic in both directions.
None of that changes a fixed fare, but it does change the timing. Leave a margin on departure days, avoid tight connections to flights out of Geneva, and book both legs early in peak weeks so the vehicle is assigned before the weather turns. If you are travelling outside winter, the same drive becomes one of the most scenic in the country, and the stops along Lake Geneva are at their best.
Coming back: Zermatt to Geneva
The return works in reverse: the shuttle train down to Täsch, where the chauffeur meets you at the agreed point with the vehicle, then the drive to Geneva Airport or the lakefront. Give us your flight when you book so the pickup time allows for the drive, check-in and security. Booking both legs together means the car is already assigned if the weather turns on departure day.
Geneva prices and booking

Fares include the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet; tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
