Uber works in Brussels, and for a short evening hop between the Grand-Place, Avenue Louise and your hotel it can be a perfectly good choice. What is different from home is the legal frame. The Brussels-Capital Region treats app-booked cars as part of its taxi system, with published minimum fares for booked journeys and a ceiling on how far prices can rise. That makes surge pricing in Brussels a bounded thing, which is good news for anyone used to watching prices jump after a concert in Chicago.
Below we set the options side by side: an app ride, a classic taxi from the rank, public transport, and a chauffeur booked before you fly. A fixed Elly8.net transfer from Brussels Airport (BRU) to the Grand-Place costs from US$115 in a business sedan to US$300 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. We will say plainly where that is worth paying and where the metro or a taxi is the smarter call.
How does Uber work in Brussels?
In Brussels, app rides belong to the region's taxi system. The region distinguishes station taxis, the classic cabs at ranks, from street taxis, formerly called limousines, and separates booked journeys from unbooked ones. Booked journeys, including those made through a booking platform, follow minimum fares and may cost at most 200% of those minimums.
The rules are published by the Brussels-Capital Region. It lists four services: station taxis (classic taxis), street taxis (formerly limousines, known locally as LVC), ceremonial taxis and collective taxis. A distinction is made between booked and unbooked journeys, and the region publishes the list of reservation intermediaries, the platforms through which journeys can be booked. It counts 3,250 taxis and more than 7,000 active drivers in the region.

The fares, as the region publishes them
| Fare type | Pick-up | Per minute started | Per km | Minimum | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unbooked ride, station taxis only | €2.60 | €0.60 | €2.30 | €8.00 | Fixed rates; €2 night surcharge 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. |
| Booked ride, station or street taxi | €1.50 | €0.40 | €1.50 | €8.00 | Up to 200% of the minimum rates |
| Booked Grand Luxe street taxi | €5.00 | €1.00 | €3.00 | - | Up to 500% of the minimum rates |
Grand Luxe, in the region's definition, means a car less than 10 years old when first put into service, with a wheelbase of at least 2.90 m and a purchase price of at least €60,500 before options and taxes. The region also requires the driver to hand you a printed ticket at the end of the journey, showing the taxi number and the fare, which is the document you need for a complaint or a lost item.
In plain terms: hail or take a classic taxi from a rank and you pay the fixed meter rates. Book a ride, by phone or through an app, and the price can sit anywhere from the published minimum up to double it, depending on the operator and demand. Book a luxury car through an app and the ceiling is five times the luxury minimum.
What typical Brussels rides cost
Here are the published rates applied to a few common trips, using routed clear-road distances and times from the public OSRM router. This is arithmetic for comparison, not a quote; traffic adds minutes, and every minute started is charged.
| Trip | Routed distance and time | Unbooked station taxi, daytime | Booked ride, minimum to ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand-Place to Brussels-Midi station | 2 km, about 6 min | about €10.80 | €8 minimum, up to about €16 |
| Grand-Place to Avenue Louise | 3 km, about 6 min | about €13.10 | about €8.40 to €16.80 |
| Grand-Place to Schuman, European Quarter | 7 km, about 14 min | about €27.10 | about €17.60 to €35.20 |
| Grand-Place to the Atomium, Heysel | 8 km, about 20 min | about €33.00 | about €21.50 to €43.00 |
Two patterns stand out. A booked app ride at a quiet moment can be cheaper than the meter, because the booked minimums are lower. At busy moments it can be dearer, but never more than double the minimum. For a short hop, either is reasonable. For an airport run or a whole evening, the comparison changes, and our guide to Brussels Airport taxis and rideshare covers the airport, which sits outside the Brussels region and follows different rules.
How to tell the cars apart
The region sets the look. Station taxis are black, with a black and mango-yellow chequered stripe on all four doors, two iris emblems for the Brussels-Capital Region and a chequered roof light. Street taxis, which take booked journeys such as most app rides, have no specific visual identity and must not be confused with station taxis. All Brussels taxis carry number plates with the letters TX, though some older TL plates remain. If you book an app ride, check the plate and driver in the app before you get in.
Public transport: often the best answer
Brussels has a full metro, tram and bus network, and the centre is compact. For one or two people without heavy bags, public transport is usually the cheapest and often the quickest way to cross the city in rush hour, when every car is in the same traffic. From the airport, Brussels Airport says six direct trains an hour run to the city, taking about 18 minutes to Brussels-Central, with a €6.90 airport supplement usually included in the ticket.
Five Brussels situations and what we would book
A solo traveller with a carry-on, staying near Brussels-Central. The train from the airport and then walk or take the metro. It is cheap, quick and frequent.
Dinner near the Grand-Place and back to a hotel on Avenue Louise. An app ride or a taxi from the rank. A few euros either way, and the ceiling keeps a booked ride sensible.
A family of five landing on a morning transatlantic flight. A pre-booked Business SUV at US$150, carrying six passengers and six bags, with the chauffeur waiting in arrivals and child seats fitted before pickup.
A delegation of eight with meetings across the European Quarter. An Executive Sprinter, or an hourly chauffeur from US$85 an hour in a business sedan to US$170 in a Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. On summit days, streets around the institutions can be closed or controlled; the chauffeur follows police instructions and the desk plans set-down points around published closures. See government and diplomatic transportation.
A gala, concert or trade fair at Brussels Expo. When thousands leave at once, apps and ranks are stretched together and booked prices move towards their ceiling. The evening out and event night package, from US$425 in a business sedan to US$850 in a Sprinter, holds one car and one meeting point for the night. See event transportation.
Arriving by train at Brussels-Midi
Many North American visitors reach Brussels by rail from London, Paris or Amsterdam rather than by air. Visit Bruges, the official tourism office of the neighbouring city, lists Eurostar and TGV services into Brussels-South, the station also called Brussels-Midi or Brussel-Zuid. The Grand-Place is about 2 km (1 mi) away by road, roughly six minutes on a clear road, so an unbooked station taxi from the station costs only around €10.80 on the daytime meter by our arithmetic.
That is cheap, and for two people with wheeled cases it is the obvious answer. A pre-booked car is for the arrivals where the platform is the hard part: a family with luggage who would rather be met at the exit of the hall, a group of colleagues who need one vehicle, or a late train when the queue for taxis has grown. Book train station transfers with the train number and the chauffeur waits for the actual arrival time.
Price certainty: what each option promises
The meter promises the region's fixed rates. You know the formula, not the total, until you arrive.
A booked app ride promises a price shown before you confirm, somewhere between the region's minimum and its ceiling, for that trip at that moment. It does not promise a car will be free when you need it, or that the vehicle will take four suitcases.
An Elly8.net fixed fare promises a named vehicle class at a price agreed before you travel, charged in US dollars, with the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet included. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost, never marked up.
Luggage and vehicle size
App rides and taxis are normally standard cars. A pre-booked chauffeur lets you choose the vehicle from the luggage up.
| Vehicle class | Passengers | Bags | BRU to the Grand-Place |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 | 2 | US$115 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 | 2 | US$205 |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 | 6 | US$150 |
| First Class SUV | 6 | 6 | US$185 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 | 12 | US$300 |
Prices are per vehicle. For a team of ten with ten cases, the US$300 Sprinter is one vehicle; divided by ten that is US$30 each, as arithmetic for comparison only. See the fleet.
Uber Black, Grand Luxe and the premium question
Travellers who use Uber Black at home often look for the same thing in Brussels. The region's Grand Luxe category covers large, recent luxury cars booked as street taxis, with a pick-up minimum of €5, €1 a minute and €3 a kilometre, and a ceiling at five times those minimums. That ceiling is the point: at busy times a luxury app ride can cost several times its quiet-hour price.
A pre-booked chauffeur is a different product. It is assigned to your flight or meeting, waits through delays, holds the passenger's name, and invoices the company. A corporate account adds fixed fares, monthly invoicing, one booking contact and NDAs on request, which is why law firms, associations and EU-facing consultancies tend to book this way. See Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Driving yourself? Mind the low emission zone
If you are tempted to rent a car instead, note that the whole Brussels-Capital Region is a low emission zone. LEZ Brussels says diesel vehicles must meet at least the Euro 6 standard and petrol vehicles at least Euro 3, and a non-compliant vehicle can be fined €350, with no warning letter. Rental fleets are usually compliant, but parking and the one-way centre are their own challenge. Elly8.net partner vehicles are four model years old or newer. Our chauffeur vs car rental guide covers the trade-offs.
Beyond the city
App rides are built for short trips. For a day out, a fixed booking is simpler: the eight-hour Bruges package costs from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in a Sprinter, and our guides to the Brussels to Bruges transfer and a Brussels day trip with a private driver lay out the routes. Travelling on, the same desk covers Amsterdam, Paris and London.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber available in Brussels?
Yes. In the Brussels-Capital Region, app rides are booked journeys within the regional taxi system, usually carried out by street taxis, the category formerly known as limousines. Booked journeys follow published minimum fares and can cost at most 200% of those minimums, or 500% for the Grand Luxe category.
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Brussels?
Sometimes. Booked rides have lower minimum rates than the meter, so a quiet-hour app ride can cost less than a classic taxi. At busy times the price can rise to double the minimum. For a 7 km trip to Schuman, that range is about €17.60 to €35.20, against about €27.10 on the meter.
How can you recognise a licensed Brussels taxi?
Station taxis are black with a black and mango-yellow chequered stripe and a chequered roof light. Street taxis, including app rides, have no set livery. All Brussels taxis carry TX number plates, with some older TL plates still in use, and the driver must give you a printed ticket.
How much is a private car from Brussels Airport to the city?
A fixed Elly8.net transfer from BRU to the Grand-Place costs from US$115 in a business sedan, US$150 in a business SUV and US$205 in a First Class Sedan to US$300 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, including the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet.
Is there a night surcharge on Brussels taxis?
For unbooked rides in station taxis, yes: €2 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., on top of the €2.60 pick-up, €0.60 a minute and €2.30 a kilometre. Booked rides, including app rides, follow their own minimums and the 200% ceiling instead.
Can we book a car for a full day of meetings in the European Quarter?
Yes. Hourly bookings start at US$85 in a business sedan with a 3-hour minimum, and the corporate roadshow day costs from US$765 in a business sedan to US$1,530 in an Executive Sprinter, with the car held between meetings. Corporate accounts invoice monthly.
