The most rewarding Munich day trip with a private driver depends on what you want from the day. Salzburg gives you a baroque old town across the Austrian border, about 144 km (89 mi) away on our routing. The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is half an hour north. The Chiemsee has a royal palace on an island, the Tegernsee a lake and mountains under an hour away, and the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, rises above Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
A full day with a chauffeur costs from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed per vehicle, and a shorter trip can be booked by the hour from US$85 with a 3-hour minimum. Neuschwanstein has its own package and its own guide; this one covers everything else, with routed drive times and the details the official sites ask visitors to know.
What is the best day trip from Munich by private car?
Salzburg is the most popular full day, about 1 hour 40 minutes each way on a clear road. Dachau suits a half day by the hour. The Chiemsee, the Tegernsee and the Zugspitze are full days in the lakes and mountains. A chauffeured full day costs from US$630 per vehicle; Neuschwanstein is a separate 10-hour package.
All distances and times are routed estimates from the Altstadt on a clear road. Traffic leaving Munich on Friday afternoons and returning on Sunday evenings, especially towards the lakes and mountains, can add a good deal.
| Day trip | Routed distance | Clear-road drive | How to book | Business Sedan | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Salzburg: Mozart's city across the border
Salzburg is the classic full day from Munich. On our routing it is about 144 km (89 mi), roughly an hour and 40 minutes each way on a clear road, which leaves a generous five or six hours in the city within a full-day booking. Salzburg's official tourism site covers the old town's UNESCO World Heritage status, the Mozart sights, the Salzburg Festival and the Sound of Music locations.
How we plan it. A morning departure, the old town and the fortress before lunch, the Mozart sites and shopping in the afternoon, and back in Munich for dinner. Some travellers add a Sound of Music detour or the lakes outside the city; tell the desk in advance so the timing works.
What to know. The drive crosses into Austria, so bring passports. Any road tolls are billed at cost. If you are moving on from Salzburg rather than returning, a one-way drive to a hotel in Salzburg or beyond is quoted as a fixed price in the web booker; see city to city car service and our Vienna car service.
What it costs. The full-day chauffeur costs US$630 in a Business Sedan, US$810 in a Business SUV, US$960 in a First Class SUV, US$1,035 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter.
Dachau: a half day that should not be rushed
The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is about 29 km (18 mi) north-west of the Altstadt on our routing, roughly 35 minutes on a clear road. According to the memorial, it is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, closed on 24 December, and admission is free. The former crematorium area closes at 4:30 pm. Guided tours in English run daily at 11 am and 1 pm, and audio guides are available.
How to book it. An hourly car is the natural fit. Two to three hours at the memorial plus the drive each way makes a four- to five-hour booking. As arithmetic for planning only, five hours in a Business Sedan at US$85 an hour comes to US$425 per vehicle. The minimum is three hours. Many visitors prefer to return to the hotel quietly afterwards rather than continue sightseeing, which a private car allows. See car service by the hour.
The Chiemsee: Herrenchiemsee and the island palace
The Chiemsee is Bavaria's largest lake, and on Herreninsel stands Herrenchiemsee New Palace, King Ludwig II's version of Versailles. On our routing, Prien am Chiemsee, where the boats leave, is about 86 km (53 mi) from the Altstadt, roughly an hour on a clear road.
The Bavarian Palace Administration says the palace state rooms can only be seen on a guided tour, that tickets can be bought online or on site, and that you should allow about an hour for the journey to the palace including the boat trip. A contingent of tickets is kept on site for spontaneous visitors, but waits or fully booked tours are possible when demand is high.
How we plan it. The chauffeur drops you at the landing stage in Prien and waits or meets you there when you return from the island. Lunch on the island or by the lake, and an afternoon stop at another lakeside village if time allows.
What it costs. The full-day chauffeur rate applies, from US$630 in a Business Sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter. Boat and palace tickets are extra.
The Tegernsee: the easy lake day
The Tegernsee is the closest of the big Bavarian lakes, about 53 km (33 mi) south of the Altstadt on our routing, roughly 50 minutes on a clear road. It is a relaxed day: lakeside villages, a walk along the shore, lunch with mountain views, perhaps a boat on the lake.
Because the drive is short, an hourly booking can work for a half day. For a full day with several stops, the full-day chauffeur is the simpler choice. On sunny weekends the roads to the lake are busy, so weekdays are calmer.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Zugspitze
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is about 91 km (57 mi) from the Altstadt on our routing, roughly an hour and ten minutes on a clear road. Above it stands the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, reached by cable car and cogwheel train. The Zugspitze mountain railways publish their opening times and note that the railways close temporarily in November for maintenance, so check before you plan an autumn trip.
How we plan it. Leave early to beat the queues and the clouds, ride up in the morning, and spend the afternoon in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. On clear days the summit views are the reason to go; on cloudy days a valley alternative, such as the town and its surroundings, may be the better plan. The chauffeur can adjust on the day within the booked hours.
What it costs. The full-day chauffeur rate, from US$630 to US$1,255. Mountain railway tickets are extra.
A note on Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest
Berchtesgaden, about 155 km (96 mi) from Munich on our routing, has long been a full-day destination. Before you plan it, check the current situation: the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest) states that after a severe fire on 23 October 2026, the building and all visitor operations, including the bus shuttle and the lift, are completely closed until further notice. Salzburg or the Chiemsee are good alternatives until it reopens.
Neuschwanstein and Linderhof
The fairy-tale castle has its own fixed 10-hour package, from US$785 in a Business Sedan to US$1,565 in an Executive Sprinter, because the drive and the timed tour make for a longer day. Our guide to Munich to Neuschwanstein by private car or train covers tickets, the walk up and pairing it with Linderhof.
Combinations that fit in one day
With a car, two nearby places often fit comfortably into a single full-day booking. A few that work well, with routed drive times on a clear road:
- Dachau in the morning, the city in the afternoon. The memorial is only about 35 minutes from the old town, so a morning visit leaves the afternoon for a quieter programme back in Munich.
- The Tegernsee and the mountains. Lakeside villages in the morning and a drive deeper into the Alps for lunch, returning before the evening traffic.
- The Chiemsee and a lakeside village. The island palace before lunch, a slower afternoon on another part of the shore.
- Salzburg with an early start. The old town alone fills the day; adding the lakes outside the city works best in summer, when the light lasts.
What does not work is cramming too much in. A full-day booking is generous, but driving time, admission slots and lunch add up quickly. Tell the desk your priorities, and the chauffeur will say honestly what fits.
Private driver or train?
Salzburg, the lakes and Garmisch-Partenkirchen are all served by trains from Munich, and for a solo traveller who enjoys public transport the train is the economical choice. A chauffeur makes most sense when:
- You are a family or a group. As arithmetic for comparison only, a US$1,255 Sprinter full day shared by ten works out at about US$126 each, all in one vehicle.
- You want more than one stop. A lake village in the morning and a palace in the afternoon is hard to link by public transport.
- You have a timed ticket. The day is planned backwards from it.
- Someone has limited mobility. Drop-offs close to the entrance rather than long walks from a station.
- You are carrying things. Coats, shopping, hiking gear and child seats stay in the car.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a private driver for a day trip from Munich?
The full-day chauffeur costs US$630 in a Business Sedan, US$810 in a Business SUV, US$960 in a First Class SUV, US$1,035 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. Shorter trips can be booked by the hour from US$85 with a 3-hour minimum.
Is Salzburg a good day trip from Munich?
Yes. It is about 144 km (89 mi) on our routing, roughly an hour and 40 minutes each way on a clear road, leaving most of the day for the old town and the Mozart sights. Bring passports, since you cross into Austria. Tolls are billed at cost.
Is the Dachau memorial open every day?
According to the memorial, it is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and closed on 24 December. Admission is free, the former crematorium area closes at 4:30 pm, and English tours run daily at 11 am and 1 pm.
Can we visit Herrenchiemsee without booking ahead?
The palace administration keeps some tickets on site, but warns of waits or fully booked tours at busy times. The state rooms are seen only on a guided tour, so buying online is the safer plan. Allow about an hour from Prien including the boat.
Is the Eagle's Nest open?
Not at the time of writing. The Kehlsteinhaus states that after a severe fire on 23 October 2026, the building and all visitor operations, including the shuttle bus and the lift, are closed until further notice. Check its site before planning a Berchtesgaden day.
Are tickets and boats included in the price?
No. Fares cover the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Admission, boats and mountain railways are bought separately, and parking and tolls are billed at cost. Send us your ticket times and the chauffeur plans the day around them.
