Uber in Munich is available and, on an ordinary day, an easy way to get around a compact, well-run city. So are the city's licensed taxis, and so is one of the best public transport networks in Europe. For a short ride from your hotel to a restaurant in Schwabing, pick whichever is closest to hand.
Munich's calendar is the complication. Sixteen days of Oktoberfest, some of the world's largest trade fairs at Messe München, Bayern home games at the Allianz Arena and a security conference that closes part of the old town all concentrate demand into short windows. This guide compares an app ride, a taxi and a pre-booked chauffeur in exactly those moments. An Elly8.net car by the hour costs from US$85 in a business sedan, and a fixed airport transfer from US$200.
Should I use Uber, a taxi or a private car in Munich?
For short, unplanned rides on normal days, an app ride or a taxi is fine and usually cheaper. On festival nights, fair mornings and match days, demand spikes, app prices rise and taxi queues grow. That is when a pre-booked car, with a fixed price and an agreed pickup point, earns its cost.
In Germany, an app car that is not a taxi runs as a private hire vehicle under section 49 of the Passenger Transport Act: bookings reach it through the operator's base, and it returns to base after each job unless it already has the next one. The app quotes a price before you confirm, and the quote reflects demand. Licensed taxis charge an official tariff set by the state under section 51. Our Uber in Berlin guide explains those rules at length; here we focus on how they play out in Munich's busiest weeks.
Oktoberfest: the hardest night for every option
The official Oktoberfest site gives the 2027 festival as 18 September to 3 October on the Theresienwiese. The festival ground is only about 5 km (3 mi) from the Altstadt on our routing, roughly ten minutes on a clear road, but those are not clear-road days. Streets around the Wiesn are closed or congested, and when the tents empty in the evening, thousands of people look for a ride at the same moment.
Here is how the three options behave that evening.
App ride. Requests surge, so the quoted price rises and the nearest car may be some distance away. Because the pickup point is wherever the app and the road closures allow, you may walk several streets to meet it, then match the plate in a crowd.
Taxi. The tariff does not surge, which is a real advantage. But ranks near the festival have long queues at closing time, and a free taxi passing by is rare.
Pre-booked car. The evening out and event night package, from US$425 in a business sedan to US$850 in an Executive Sprinter, sets a drop-off and a pickup at an agreed point a few streets from the festival ground, at an agreed time, with the chauffeur's mobile number. That is the plan we suggest for a group with a tent reservation. The chauffeur follows local rules in the vehicle.
For a big party, the arithmetic is worth doing. As arithmetic for comparison only, a US$850 Sprinter for the evening shared by twelve is about US$71 each, with everyone travelling together and no one left looking for a ride. See event transportation and group transportation.
Messe München: opening mornings and closing rush
Messe München in Riem is about 10 km (6 mi) east of the Altstadt on our routing, roughly 14 minutes on a clear road. On the opening morning of a large fair, that run is anything but clear, and every exhibitor and visitor leaves the halls at closing time together.
The big shows bring this to a head. According to EXPO REAL, the real estate and investment fair runs from 4 to 6 October 2027, and IAA Mobility runs from 7 to 12 September 2027, with its open space in the city centre and its summit for trade visitors at the Messe.
For one visitor on one day, the U-Bahn to the Messe is efficient, and an app or taxi back to the hotel is fine outside the closing rush.
For exhibitors and delegations, a car by the hour is the norm: from US$85 an hour in a Business Sedan, US$110 in a Business SUV and US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. The car waits between hotel, halls and client dinner, so there is no new request at every leg. The corporate roadshow day, from US$765 in a business sedan to US$1,530 in a Sprinter, holds one car all day. See conference and trade show transportation.
Match days at the Allianz Arena
The Allianz Arena is in Fröttmaning, about 13 km (8 mi) north of the Altstadt on our routing, roughly 18 minutes on a clear road. On match days the stadium approach roads and the U-Bahn carry the crowd, and after the final whistle everyone leaves together.
The U-Bahn is the way most fans travel and the one we would suggest for a solo visitor. For a family with young children, a hospitality group, or anyone who wants to leave at a set time without a long walk, a car waiting at an agreed point is the calmer option. The evening out and event night package covers it; tell the desk the fixture and the chauffeur plans the pickup point away from the busiest exits. See sports event transportation.
The Munich Security Conference and closed streets
The Munich Security Conference gives its 2027 dates as 12 to 14 February. Conference weekends bring heavy security and restricted access around the Hotel Bayerischer Hof and Promenadeplatz in the old town. App cars and taxis cannot enter restricted streets any more than anyone else can, and set-down points move with police instructions.
For delegations, NGOs and corporate attendees, a pre-booked car with a desk that replans set-down points as access changes is the practical answer. Access depends on your accreditation, and Elly8.net provides transport, not security services. See government and diplomatic transportation.
A normal Munich day: where the app or the taxi wins
Most of a Munich visit is not Oktoberfest or a fair, and on those ordinary days the honest advice is different.
Short hops. From a hotel on Maximilianstrasse to dinner in Haidhausen, from the Pinakothek museums back to the old town, from Schwabing to the English Garden: these are short rides, and an app car or a taxi does them quickly. A pre-booked car for a single ten-minute leg costs more than it saves.
Rainy afternoons. When the weather turns, a taxi from a rank or an app car is the quick fix. If you are planning a whole afternoon of museums and shopping in the rain, though, an hourly car that waits outside each stop starts to make sense, especially with shopping bags.
Late, quiet evenings. On a weeknight outside the festival season, getting home from a restaurant is rarely a problem by app or taxi.
Public transport. Munich's U-Bahn, S-Bahn and trams cover the centre densely, and for a solo traveller comfortable with them they are often the fastest way across town.
The point of this guide is not that a chauffeur always wins. It is that the gap between the options is small on a normal day and large on Munich's busiest ones, and many visitors plan their trips around exactly those days.
Side by side
| Moment | App ride | Taxi | Elly8.net pre-booked car |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short hop on a normal day | Quick, quoted price | Quick, official tariff | Not worth it for one leg |
| Oktoberfest closing time | Demand-priced, long walk to pickup | Tariff fixed, long rank queues | Agreed point and time, from US$425 per evening |
| Messe opening morning | Demand-priced | Busy ranks | Hourly from US$85, 3-hour minimum |
| Allianz Arena after the match | Demand-priced, slow | Queues | Car waiting at an agreed point |
| Security conference weekend | Subject to closures | Subject to closures | Desk replans set-down points |
| MUC arrival with family and bags | Car size uncertain | Standard boot | Business SUV US$260, 6 passengers, 6 bags |
What each option promises on price
- The taxi promises the official tariff on the meter. No surge, but no fixed total until you arrive.
- The app promises the price on your screen at the moment you confirm. Under section 51a of the federal law, a licensing authority may set minimum fares for private hire cars, but the quote still moves with demand above that.
- Elly8.net promises one number agreed in advance: hourly from US$85 to US$170, the evening package from US$425 to US$850, and MUC to the Altstadt from US$200 in a business sedan to US$520 in a Sprinter, per vehicle. Fares include the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
For a single short ride, the taxi or the app will usually cost less, and we would not suggest otherwise. The fixed price earns its keep when timing, people, bags or an expense policy matter. The general trade-offs are in chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft, Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur and chauffeur vs taxi.
The old town: why the drop-off is a corner, not a door
Much of the Altstadt around Marienplatz is a pedestrian zone, and that applies to every vehicle. An app car, a taxi and a chauffeur all set you down at the nearest street a car can reach. The difference is that a chauffeur gets out and helps with bags, and a pre-booked pickup can be arranged at a fixed corner with a name and a phone number rather than a moving dot on a map.
Rides in Munich are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.
Arriving and leaving
App and taxi decisions often start at the airport, which is about 38 km (24 mi) from the old town. Our guide to getting from Munich Airport to the city centre covers the S-Bahn, the ranks and when to pre-book. For days out of town, see Munich to Neuschwanstein by private car or train. Every published fare is on the Munich car service page, and the same desk covers Frankfurt, Zurich and Venice.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber available in Munich?
Yes. App rides operate in Munich, and cars that are not taxis run as private hire vehicles under the federal Passenger Transport Act, taking bookings through their base. The app quotes a price before you confirm, and it rises when demand is high, such as at Oktoberfest closing time or after a match.
What is the best way home from Oktoberfest?
For a solo visitor, public transport is usually quickest. For a group, a pre-booked car with an agreed pickup point a few streets from the festival ground avoids rank queues and demand pricing. The evening out and event night package costs from US$425 in a Business Sedan to US$850 in an Executive Sprinter.
Are Munich taxis cheaper than Uber?
It depends on the moment. Taxis charge an official tariff that does not surge, while app quotes move with demand, so on a quiet day the app may be lower and on a busy night the taxi may be. Neither gives a fixed total in advance.
Can I book a car by the hour for a trade fair?
Yes. Hourly service costs from US$85 an hour in a Business Sedan to US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. The car waits between hotel, halls and dinners. For a full day, the corporate roadshow day runs from US$765 to US$1,530.
Can a car drop us right at our hotel in the old town?
Much of the Altstadt is pedestrian, so any vehicle stops at the nearest street a car can reach. The chauffeur helps with bags from there. Give us the exact hotel name and address when you book.
Do prices include gratuity?
Yes. Elly8.net fares include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity, and airport transfers include meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
