Rome to Florence is about 281 km (174 mi) by road from Rome's historic centre to the centre of Florence, roughly 3 hours 7 minutes on a clear road, most of it on the A1 Autostrada del Sole. Those are routed estimates from the public OSRM road network, not a traffic forecast; leaving Rome on the ring road and threading into Florence can add a good deal at busy hours.
The high-speed train does the same trip in about an hour and a half, so the honest first answer is that a solo traveller with a carry-on should take it. A private car earns its place when the drive becomes part of the trip: a stop in Orvieto or the Val d'Orcia, a family with a fortnight's luggage, a villa outside Florence rather than a hotel by the station, or an arrival straight from a long-haul flight into Fiumicino.
How long does it take to drive from Rome to Florence?
Routed on the public OSRM network, Rome's historic centre to central Florence is about 281 km (174 mi) and 3 hours 7 minutes on a clear road via the A1. From Fiumicino Airport it is about 316 km (197 mi) and 3 hours 42 minutes. With a hill-town stop and lunch, plan six to eight hours.
The drive divides into three parts. Getting out of Rome to the A1 junction north of the city is the slowest, especially in the morning commute. The middle section runs up the Tiber valley past Orvieto's rock, then through the Chiana valley with the hills of southern Tuscany on the left. The last part is the descent into Florence, where the motorway ends at the city's edge and the approach to a hotel in the limited traffic zone takes its own time.
| Leg (routed estimate, clear road) | Distance | Drive time |

The train first, because it is fast
Italian high-speed rail between the two cities is excellent. Italo gives its Rome to Florence journey as 1 hour and 25 minutes, with tickets from €14.90; Trenitalia's Frecciarossa runs the same corridor. Fares on both change with demand and the date you buy.
For one or two people with light bags, staying near Roma Termini and near Firenze Santa Maria Novella, the train wins on time and cost. We would book it ourselves.
The equation shifts when the hotels are not near the stations, when the bags are heavy, or when you want to see something on the way. A family of five leaving a hotel near Piazza Navona needs a taxi to Termini, a walk through a large station with suitcases, a train, and another taxi or a long walk at Santa Maria Novella. That is four handovers where a car is one. If you do take the train, a chauffeur waiting at the Florence end is a train station transfer.
Stops that make the drive worth it
A car between Rome and Florence only beats the train if you use the freedom it gives. These stops sit close to the route and are awkward to combine by rail on the same day.
Orvieto. The cathedral town on its volcanic rock is the classic halfway stop, about 122 km (76 mi) from Rome. The Opera del Duomo di Orvieto publishes visiting hours for the cathedral and its frescoed chapel; check them before you set off. Allow two to three hours for the cathedral, a walk through the old town and lunch. From Orvieto to Florence is about 172 km (107 mi), under two hours on a clear road.
Civita di Bagnoregio. The hilltop village reached on foot across a long footbridge is about 117 km (73 mi) from Rome and close to Orvieto, so some travellers pair the two. Together they make a full day; choose one if you want to reach Florence before dark.
Pienza and Montepulciano, in the Val d'Orcia. The Val d'Orcia is on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its Renaissance farmed landscape, and Pienza and Montepulciano are 13 km (8 mi) apart on its edge. This route leaves the motorway for country roads, so it is slower: about 2 hours 31 minutes from Rome to Pienza, and 1 hour 35 minutes from Montepulciano to Florence. It is also the most beautiful version of the drive.
Siena. Siena is a detour to the west, 237 km (147 mi) from Rome, and only about 73 km (45 mi) from Florence. Its historic centre is largely closed to traffic, so the car drops you at the edge and collects you later. Siena also works well as its own day from Florence, which our Florence day trip guide covers.
Pick one stop. Two makes a long day in the car; three makes the hotel arrival late. Most travellers choose Orvieto for convenience or the Val d'Orcia for scenery.
Straight from Fiumicino to Florence
A common North American itinerary lands overnight in Rome and heads straight to Tuscany. The train route from Fiumicino means the Leonardo Express or a taxi to Termini first, then a high-speed train, then a transfer in Florence, all with checked luggage after a night flight.
A car from the arrivals hall to the Florence hotel is about 316 km (197 mi), roughly 3 hours 42 minutes on a clear road. The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits in arrivals with a name board; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. Many travellers book a stop in Orvieto for lunch, which breaks the drive and keeps them awake until a sensible bedtime. If you would rather spend the first nights in Rome, a fixed Fiumicino transfer to Rome's historic centre costs from US$180 in a business sedan, the same price in either direction.
What a private car from Rome to Florence costs
The Rome to Florence transfer is not on a published price list, because it depends on the exact addresses and on whether you want a stop. Enter the pickup, the drop-off and any stop in the web booker and the desk returns a fixed price per vehicle, charged in US dollars, before you pay anything. Motorway tolls on the A1 are billed at cost, as on every Elly8.net booking.
For planning, the published hourly and full-day rates on the Rome price list show the scale. A long transfer with a stop uses most of a working day of a chauffeur's time.
| Rome booking | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class Sedan | First Class SUV | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| By the hour, 3-hour minimum | US$85 / hour | US$110 / hour | US$140 / hour | US$130 / hour | US$170 / hour |
| Full-day chauffeur | US$630 | US$810 | US$1,035 | US$960 | US$1,255 |
| Fiumicino to the historic centre | US$180 | US$235 | US$315 | US$290 | US$470 |
Prices are per vehicle, never per person. As arithmetic for comparison only, a business SUV carries six passengers and six bags, so a family of five is comparing one car with five train tickets plus a taxi at each end.
Once you are in Florence, the city's own fixed fares apply for the rest of the stay: Florence Airport to the centre from US$105, Pisa Airport to the centre from US$305, and the eight-hour Chianti day from US$630. Every fare is on the Florence chauffeur service page.
Which vehicle for three hours on the motorway
On a long drive with luggage, size up rather than down. Capacities from the fleet page:
- Business Sedan or First Class Sedan. Three passengers and two bags. A couple with carry-on cases.
- Business SUV or First Class SUV. Six passengers and six bags. Families, or anyone with full-size suitcases for a two-week trip.
- Executive Sprinter. Twelve passengers and twelve bags. Wedding parties, extended families and small corporate groups; see Sprinter van with driver.
Child and booster seats are fitted on request before pickup. Give the children's ages when you book.
Practical notes for American and Canadian travellers
Start mid-morning. The routed time assumes a clear road. Leaving Rome after the commuter peak keeps the first leg short and puts Orvieto at lunchtime.
The Florence end. Florence's historic centre is a limited traffic zone. Give the exact hotel address and the partner plans the closest legal approach for your arrival time; where the last stretch is on foot, the chauffeur helps with the bags.
Driving yourself. Some visitors consider a rental car for this route. Italy's national tourism portal notes that drivers from outside the EU need an international driving permit with their licence, and both cities restrict traffic in their historic centres. Our chauffeur vs car rental page sets out the trade-offs.
Breaks on the motorway. Italian motorways have service areas at regular intervals, and the chauffeur will stop whenever you ask. With children, plan one short break even if you are not making a sightseeing stop; three hours is a long time in a car seat.
Luggage on a sightseeing stop. When you stop in Orvieto or Pienza, your cases stay in the locked car with the chauffeur. That is one of the quiet advantages over the train, where a stop on the way means finding left luggage or carrying everything up the hill.
Tipping. Standard gratuity is already included in every Elly8.net fare, so there is nothing to add in cash at the end of the drive.
Uber for this trip. App rides in Italy come from licensed taxis and car-hire-with-driver operators, and a 280 km trip is not what the app is built for. Our comparison of Uber, taxi and a private car in Florence covers the city rides where the app does make sense.
Three ways to plan it
A couple with carry-on cases, hotels near both stations. Take the Italo or Frecciarossa train. Book a car only if you want the Orvieto stop.
A family of five, two weeks of luggage, a villa near Florence. One business SUV from the Rome hotel to the villa, with a two-hour stop in Orvieto. One vehicle, no stations.
A group of ten from Fiumicino to a Tuscan wedding. One Executive Sprinter from arrivals, with lunch in the Val d'Orcia, billed through a travel agent account or a corporate account. The city to city car service page explains how long transfers are quoted. From Florence, the same desk can arrange the next legs, such as Florence to Pisa by car with a stop at the tower.

About 281 km (174 mi) from Rome's historic centre to central Florence by road, routed on the public OSRM network, and roughly 3 hours 7 minutes on a clear road, mostly on the A1 Autostrada del Sole. Traffic leaving Rome and entering Florence can add significantly to that at busy hours.
Is the train or a car better from Rome to Florence?
For one or two travellers with light luggage going station to station, the train is faster and cheaper: Italo gives 1 hour 25 minutes. A car is better for families with heavy bags, a stop at Orvieto or in the Val d'Orcia, a villa outside Florence, or an arrival straight from Fiumicino.
How much does a private driver from Rome to Florence cost?
The one-way transfer is quoted as a fixed price per vehicle in the web booker and charged in US dollars, with tolls billed at cost. For scale, Rome hourly rates start at US$85 an hour in a business sedan and the full-day chauffeur starts at US$630.
Can we stop in Orvieto on the way?
Yes. Orvieto is about 122 km (76 mi) from Rome, close to the A1, and the most convenient halfway stop. Add it when you book and the desk prices the whole journey as one fixed fare. Two to three hours covers the cathedral, a short walk and lunch.
Can you pick us up at Fiumicino and drive straight to Florence?
Yes. The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with a name board. The drive is about 316 km (197 mi), roughly 3 hours 42 minutes on a clear road, and a lunch stop on the way is easy to add.
Are child seats available for the drive?
Yes. Child and booster seats are fitted on request before pickup; give the children's ages when you book. A business SUV seats six with six bags, leaving room for seats and a stroller on a long motorway drive, and the chauffeur stops for breaks whenever you ask.
