For one traveller with a carry-on, the cheapest way from Vienna Airport to the city center is a long-distance train to Wien Hauptbahnhof, from €4.10 including the Vienna public transport network, and the most direct is the City Airport Train, now running as a nonstop coach to Wien Mitte for €14.90. A private driver costs more: from US$125 per vehicle in a business sedan to the Innere Stadt with Elly8.net, fixed and all-in, met inside arrivals.
Whether the driver is worth it depends on four things: how many of you there are, how much luggage you have, what time you land, and where your hotel actually is. Rides in Vienna are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. This guide sets out the public options fairly, including the changes during the current rail works, and shows where each one wins.
Is a private driver from Vienna Airport worth it over the train?
For a solo traveller or a couple with light bags staying near Wien Mitte or the main station, no: the CAT coach or a Railjet is far cheaper. A private driver is worth it for families and groups, heavy luggage, late or delayed flights, hotels away from the rail hubs, and a fixed price with no transfers.
The honest comparison is door to door, not airport to station. Every public option ends at a hub, and from there you still walk, take the U-Bahn or find a taxi to the hotel. A chauffeur's 26 minutes on a clear road, our routed estimate for the 21 km (13 mi) to the Innere Stadt, is the whole journey.
What changed: the S-Bahn closure until October 2027
Vienna's main S-Bahn line through the city is being modernised, and the City Airport Train explains the effect on the airport. The central section between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof, including Wien Mitte, is closed until the end of October 2027. For those 14 months:
- The CAT runs as "CAT by bus", premium coaches nonstop between Wien Mitte and the airport, every 12 minutes.
- The S7 runs only from the airport to St. Marx, where passengers change to tram line 18 or 71 to continue into the city.
- Long-distance REX, Railjet, RJX and IC trains link the airport with Wien Hauptbahnhof about twice an hour.
If you read an older guide that recommends the S7 to Wien Mitte as the budget route, that advice is out of date until the works finish. None of this affects a private transfer, which uses the A4 motorway.
Every option from Vienna Airport to the city
| Option | Fare (one way) | Journey time | Runs | Ends at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAT by bus (City Airport Train coach) | €14.90; €24.90 return; under-15s free | 21 min nonstop | Airport departures 06:10 to 23:37, every 12 min 7 am to 7 pm, otherwise every 15 | Wien Mitte (U3, U4) |
| Railjet and other long-distance trains | from €4.10, incl. the Vienna network | about 15 min | about twice an hour | Wien Hauptbahnhof |
| S7 (shortened during the works) | rail fare, check ÖBB | to St. Marx, then tram 18 or 71 | regular | St. Marx, then tram |
| Vienna Airport Bus VAB2 | set by the operator | about 20 min | daily, around the clock | Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz |
| Taxi from the rank | metered or agreed with the operator | traffic dependent | at all hours | Your door |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$125 per vehicle, fixed | about 26 min on a clear road | any hour, booked ahead | Your door, met in arrivals |
CAT fares, times and frequencies are from the airport's CAT page, which also notes a 20 per cent discount on tickets bought online while the coach service runs. The Railjet fare and journey time are from the airport's rail connections page, and the bus lines from its bus page. Check the operators' own sites for the fare on your date.
Which option suits which hotel
The right public option depends on where you are staying, because each one drops you at a different hub. Here is how our desk would advise a traveller with one suitcase, by district.
Around St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Graben. The CAT coach to Wien Mitte is the natural choice. The stop is about a 10-minute walk from the cathedral, according to the CAT, or a short U-Bahn hop. Vienna Airport Bus line VAB2 to Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz, about 20 minutes, also lands you on the edge of the old town.
The Opera, the Ring and Karlsplatz. Bus line VAB4 runs to Karlsplatz in about 25 minutes, on the airport's timetable, which puts many of the grand Ring hotels within a short walk or taxi ride.
Belvedere, Wieden and the main station. Take a Railjet to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes. It is the cheapest fast option of all.
Mariahilf and Westbahnhof. Bus line VAB1 runs to Westbahnhof via the main station in about 40 minutes.
The Vienna International Centre and Donaustadt. Bus line VAB3 runs to Donauzentrum via the VIC in about 40 minutes. For delegations with a fixed meeting time, a car is usually the better tool; see government, diplomatic and delegation transportation. By road, the VIC is about 24 km (15 mi) from the airport, around 26 minutes on our routing.
Leopoldstadt and Praterstern. Bus line VAB5 runs to Praterstern in about 30 minutes.
The last mile the timetable does not show
A 21-minute coach ride is quick. What follows it is where North American travellers usually feel the effort.
The walk from the hub. Ten minutes from Wien Mitte to the cathedral is easy with a backpack and slow with two large cases on cobbles and kerbs. Many old-town hotels sit on narrow lanes inside the Ring.
The connection. If the hotel is not near a hub, you add a U-Bahn ride with stairs and escalators, or a taxi from the hub anyway.
Children and car seats. Children under 15 ride the CAT free, which is a real saving. But a stroller, a car seat and four bags across a coach, a platform and a tram is a lot to manage after an overnight flight.
The arrival hour. The CAT's last airport departure is 23:37 and the first is 06:10. Bus line VAB2 runs around the clock, which helps, but a delayed transatlantic arrival at 1 am is a long day made longer by waiting at a bus stop.
None of this is a reason to avoid public transport. It is the list of things a private driver removes.
Taxis at Vienna Airport
Vienna Airport is clear about one point: use only the taxi rank directly in front of the arrivals hall or the "City Transfer" counters inside the hall. The airport warns that people who approach passengers in the arrivals hall offering rides are soliciting business without authorisation, often without the necessary licence, and asks you not to use them.
A taxi from the rank is a sensible choice for a walk-up trip at an off-peak hour. The price depends on the operator and the traffic; ask for the fare before you set off. A pre-booked car does the same job with the price agreed in US dollars before you fly and the driver already inside the hall.
The case for a private driver, in numbers
Elly8.net's published fares from Vienna International Airport to the Innere Stadt, per vehicle, are fixed in either direction:
| Vehicle | Seats / bags | VIE to the Innere Stadt | Round trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$125 | US$240 |
| Business SUV | 6 / 6 | US$165 | US$315 |
| First Class SUV | 6 / 6 | US$200 | US$380 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$220 | US$420 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 / 12 | US$325 | US$620 |
The fare includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Hotels outside the Innere Stadt, the VIC or a station are quoted as fixed prices in the web booker.
For a couple with two cases each, the bags decide it. A Business Sedan carries two bags, so four large cases need a Business SUV at US$165. Two CAT tickets cost €29.80 one way. If you are staying near Wien Mitte, the CAT is the sensible call.
For a family of two adults and two children under 15, the CAT costs €29.80 one way because the children ride free. The Business SUV at US$165 takes the whole family, the seats and the bags from arrivals to the hotel door. That is the trade: a lower fare against a door-to-door trip with no transfers.
For six adults, the CAT costs €89.40 one way before any onward taxis from Wien Mitte, and two taxis may be needed for the luggage. A First Class SUV at US$200 or an Executive Sprinter at US$325 carries everyone in one vehicle. Divided by six, the Sprinter is about US$54 each, for comparison only; the price is per vehicle.
For a delegation or a business arrival with a meeting the same afternoon, the question is time and certainty rather than fare. Flight tracking, a name board in the arrivals hall and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing mean the car is there when the plane is late. See airport transfers and meet and greet.
Going back to the airport
The same fixed fare applies from the hotel to the airport, from US$125 in a business sedan. Vienna Airport checks in passengers in Terminals 1, 1A and 3, so tell us your airline when you book and the chauffeur drops you at the right door. For a long-haul flight, our desk usually suggests leaving the Innere Stadt about three hours before departure, more at weekday rush hours or with a group.
On a departure day the CAT coach is again a good option for light travellers, with the first coach leaving Wien Mitte at 05:30. Travellers who have checked out early and want to see one last sight can book a car by the hour instead and keep the bags in the vehicle; see Vienna car service by the hour.
When the train is genuinely the better choice
We would book the CAT coach or a Railjet, not a car, if all of these are true: you are one or two people, you each have one bag you can lift easily, you land between early morning and late evening, and your hotel is a short walk from Wien Mitte, Schwedenplatz or the main station. You will save money and lose very little time.
Book the car when any of these are true: three or more people, children who need seats, more than one large case each, a late or unpredictable arrival, a hotel away from the hubs, a meeting straight after landing, or a budget that has to be fixed in US dollars before you leave. Our comparisons of a chauffeur vs an airport shuttle and a chauffeur vs a taxi cover the same logic in other cities.

- Reserve now and pay in US dollars by card, or use the web booker for any other address. Confirmation arrives by email with the meeting point and the chauffeur's contact details.

Once you have landed, the next question is usually what to do with the extra days: see our guide to Vienna day trips with a private driver. If Prague is the next stop, the Prague Airport to city center by private car guide covers the arrival there, and the Vienna car service page has every published fare.
