The best London day trips by car fall into three bands. Inside an hour of Mayfair you have Windsor and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. Around an hour and a half you reach Oxford, Cambridge, Bicester Village, Leeds Castle, Canterbury and Brighton. At about two hours or more sit the Cotswolds, Stonehenge and Bath. The band decides how many hours you need, and the number of hours decides the price.
With Elly8.net, a full 8-hour day with a private driver from your London hotel costs from US$775 in a business sedan to US$1,550 in an Executive Sprinter, and the 10-hour signature day to Windsor Castle and the Cotswolds from US$970 to US$1,935. Shorter trips are booked by the hour from US$105. Every price is fixed, all-in and per vehicle. This planner sets out the drive times, the booking rule and the combinations that work.
How far are the best day trips from London by car?
By routed estimate from Mayfair on a clear road: Windsor about 42 minutes, Oxford and Cambridge about 1 hour 30 minutes, the Cotswolds from about 1 hour 40 minutes, Stonehenge about 1 hour 50 minutes and Bath about 2 hours 30 minutes. Weekday mornings leaving London add time.
The table gives the full list. Every time is a routed estimate on a clear road from Mayfair, which is where the published London fares are calculated; from Kensington or the City, add or subtract a few minutes.

How many hours to book: a simple rule
Take the drive time each way, add the time you want on site, then add about 30 minutes of slack for London traffic on the way out and a coffee stop. The total tells you which of the four ways to book fits best.
- By the hour (3-hour minimum, up to 12 hours at checkout). From US$105 an hour in a business sedan. Best for trips under about seven hours, and for days with an open ending.
- Full-day chauffeur (8 hours). From US$775 in a business sedan, priced 8% below eight hours by the hour (US$840). The default for anything around 1 hour 30 minutes each way.
- Signature day trip (10 hours). Windsor Castle and the Cotswolds, from US$970 in a business sedan, again 8% below the hourly total of US$1,050.
- One way. For days that end somewhere else, such as a hotel in Bath or a ship in Southampton, the web booker quotes a fixed price to any address.
Worked example: Cambridge is about 1 hour 33 minutes each way. Add four hours in the city and 30 minutes of slack and you reach about 7 hours 40 minutes, which is a full day. Windsor is 42 minutes each way; add two and a half hours at the castle and the town and you need about four and a half hours, so book by the hour.
Before you fix the date, check two things: closing days and timed tickets. Windsor Castle is closed to visitors on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Stonehenge, the Studio Tour and King's College in Cambridge all sell tickets for a particular time. Choose the date and the entry time first, then give both to the desk with the booking; the pickup is set backwards from the first ticket of the day, not forwards from breakfast.
What a London day trip costs, by vehicle
Prices are per vehicle and include the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Parking at the destination and road charges, such as the Congestion Charge if the day starts in central London, are billed at cost.
| Vehicle | Seats / large bags | By the hour | Full day (8 h) | Windsor and Cotswolds (10 h) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$105 | US$775 | US$970 |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 / 6 | US$135 | US$995 | US$1,245 |
| First Class SUV | 6 / 6 | US$160 | US$1,180 | US$1,475 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$170 | US$1,255 | US$1,565 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 / 12 | US$210 | US$1,550 | US$1,935 |
For a group, one vehicle nearly always beats two. Eight friends in one Executive Sprinter for a full day at US$1,550 works out to under US$195 each, as arithmetic only; the price is charged once, for the vehicle. Two Business SUVs for the same day would cost US$1,990. The fleet page shows what each class seats and carries, and the London chauffeur service page lists every fixed London price.
The two-hour trips: the Cotswolds, Stonehenge and Bath
These are the trips where a driver earns the most, because the destinations are spread out and the roads home run into the evening rush.
The Cotswolds. Burford, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Campden form a loop within 20 minutes of each other, about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes from London. The signature 10-hour day adds Windsor Castle in the morning. Our London to the Cotswolds guide has the leg-by-leg route.
Stonehenge. About 1 hour 50 minutes from Mayfair, with Salisbury Cathedral 20 minutes beyond it. The pair fit an 8-hour day almost exactly; the London to Stonehenge guide has a sample timetable and the ticketing details.
Bath. At about 2 hours 30 minutes each way, Bath is the longest of the classic day trips. The Roman Baths describe themselves as one of the best-preserved Roman remains in the world, and the whole city holds UNESCO World Heritage status. A round trip in one day needs 10 to 12 hours by the hour; many travellers prefer to go one way, stay a night, and travel on.
The 90-minute trips: Oxford, Cambridge, Kent and the coast
Cambridge. About 1 hour 33 minutes north. The colleges, King's College Chapel and the river fill a day on their own, or add the Imperial War Museum's Duxford airfield or Audley End House on the way. Our London to Cambridge guide covers the stops.
Oxford and Bicester Village. Oxford is about 1 hour 27 minutes west, and Bicester Village, the designer outlet in Oxfordshire, is a similar distance. The two are only about 24 km (15 mi) and 25 minutes apart by routed estimate, so a morning among the colleges and an afternoon of shopping, with the chauffeur waiting outside with the boot open, fits one full day.
Leeds Castle and Canterbury. Both lie south-east in Kent. Leeds Castle is about 1 hour 20 minutes away and presents 900 years of history, and Canterbury about 1 hour 40 minutes. They pair well: the castle to Canterbury is about 39 km (24 mi) and 40 minutes, so you can see one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, then drive home in about 1 hour 40 minutes.
Brighton. About 1 hour 40 minutes south to the seafront. An 8-hour day gives you roughly four hours by the sea, and the chauffeur can drop you at one end of the front and collect you at the other.
The short trips: Windsor and the Studio Tour
Windsor. The closest royal day out, about 42 minutes from Mayfair and only about 14 minutes from Heathrow. Windsor Castle is open Thursday to Monday and closed to visitors on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A four or five-hour hourly booking covers the castle and a walk across the bridge into Eton. See our London to Windsor guide.
The Warner Bros. Studio Tour. About 43 minutes north-west at Leavesden. Tickets must be booked in advance, so book the tour first and set the pickup around it. Book by the hour so the car waits for however long the tour takes, or book two one-way rides if you would rather not pay for the waiting time.
When the train is the better day trip
Be honest about the trip. Several of these destinations are well served by rail, and for one or two travellers with no luggage the train can be the right choice.
- Windsor. The Royal Collection Trust says trains from London take under an hour.
- The Studio Tour. Its own travel page gives direct trains from Euston to Watford Junction in about 20 minutes, then a shuttle bus of about 15 minutes that is included in the ticket.
- Cambridge. King's College lists regular train connections with London, with the station about 1.5 miles from the college.
The private driver wins when you are three or more, travelling with children or older parents, combining two places in a day, or heading somewhere spread out like the Cotswolds or Salisbury Plain, where the train only gets you part of the way. It also wins on the way home, when you would otherwise be on a crowded evening train with shopping bags. The chauffeur vs car rental guide covers the self-drive option.
Three sample days for different travellers
A family with children. The Warner Bros. Studio Tour in the morning, booked by the hour in a Business SUV with child seats fitted, then back to the hotel by mid-afternoon. At US$135 an hour, six hours comes to US$810 for the car, with no train changes for tired children on the way home.
A couple on a first trip. The Windsor Castle and Cotswolds signature day in a business sedan or First Class Sedan, from US$970 or US$1,565. Pick a Thursday to Monday, because the castle is closed midweek, and avoid a summer Saturday if you want Bourton-on-the-Water quiet.
A group of ten. Stonehenge and Salisbury in one Executive Sprinter for US$1,550, with bags of shopping, picnic supplies and coats all carried in a vehicle that seats twelve. Everyone travels together, and nobody has to coordinate three taxis at Salisbury station.
A business traveller with one free day. Cambridge, or Oxford with Bicester Village, on a full-day chauffeur that can also collect you from a final meeting the evening before. On a Sunday, choose somewhere other than Windsor if you want St George's Chapel, which the Royal Collection Trust says is closed to visitors on Sundays for services.
Days that start or end at the airport
A day trip does not have to start in London. Heathrow is on the west side of the city, so landing-day trips to Windsor, Stonehenge or the Cotswolds can begin straight from arrivals, with luggage locked in the car and the chauffeur tracking your flight. For London itself, before or after a trip out, our London private tours by car guide sets out four city routes. For the airport side, see Heathrow airport transfers.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best day trip from London with a private driver?
For a first visit, the Windsor Castle and Cotswolds day is the most complete: a royal castle in the morning and stone villages in the afternoon, ten hours door to door from US$970 in a business sedan. Stonehenge with Salisbury is the strongest alternative for history.
How much does a private driver for a London day trip cost?
A full 8-hour day costs from US$775 in a business sedan, US$995 in a Business SUV and US$1,550 in an Executive Sprinter. Hourly bookings start at US$105 with a 3-hour minimum. Prices are per vehicle and all-in; parking and road charges are billed at cost.
How many hours should you book for a day trip?
Add the drive each way, the time you want on site and about 30 minutes of slack. Under about seven hours, book by the hour; around eight, book the full day; for Windsor and the Cotswolds, take the 10-hour signature day.
Can we visit two places in one day?
Yes, if they are on the same side of London. Windsor and the Cotswolds, Stonehenge and Salisbury, Oxford and Bicester Village, and Leeds Castle and Canterbury all pair well. Two places on opposite sides of the city, such as Cambridge and Stonehenge, do not.
Is a day trip from London cheaper by train?
For one or two travellers going to a single place with a station near the sights, such as Windsor or Cambridge, usually yes. For three or more people, for multi-stop days, or for places like the Cotswolds and Stonehenge that trains only partly reach, a fixed-price car is often comparable.
Can the driver collect us from Heathrow for a day trip?
Yes. Book by the hour from Heathrow with your flight number, and the chauffeur tracks the landing, meets you in arrivals with a name board and keeps your luggage in the car while you visit Windsor, Stonehenge or the Cotswolds on the way to your hotel.
