The Cotswolds begin about 115 km (70 mi) west of central London and run north for well over an hour of country roads, so "the Cotswolds" can mean a 1 hour 40 minute drive or a 2 hour 10 minute one depending on the village. By our routed estimates from Mayfair, Burford is about 117 km (73 mi) away, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold about 132 km (82 mi), and Chipping Campden, at the northern end, about 149 km (93 mi). That is a long day behind the wheel on the left-hand side of the road, which is why most visitors from the US and Canada hand the driving to a chauffeur.

The simplest way to do it with Elly8.net is the signature London day trip, Windsor Castle and the Cotswolds: ten hours door to door from your hotel, from US$970 in a business sedan to US$1,935 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed and all-in per vehicle. Below are the timings, the villages that earn a stop, a route that fits one day, and how that package compares with a full-day chauffeur or an hourly booking.

How long is the drive from London to the Cotswolds?

About 1 hour 40 minutes to Burford, the nearest of the classic Cotswold towns, on a clear road from Mayfair: 117 km (73 mi) by our routed estimate. Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold take about two hours and Chipping Campden about 2 hours 10 minutes. Leaving London on a weekday morning adds time.

The routed path is straightforward: west out of London on the A40, onto the M40 past High Wycombe, and back onto the A40 beyond Oxford into the hills. Almost all of the time you lose is in the first half hour, crossing west London before the motorway. A weekday departure at 7:30 or 8:00 usually beats the worst of it; a 9:00 start on a Monday often does not. Coming home, the same road brings you back into London around the evening rush, so a return after 18:30 is calmer than one at 17:00.

The Cotswolds are bigger than most first-time visitors expect. The official tourism board, Cotswolds.com, describes an area of almost 800 square miles across five counties: Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire. You will not see all of it in a day, and you should not try. Pick three or four places within 20 minutes of each other and give each one time.

The Cotswold villages worth the stop

These four sit in a tight cluster in the north-east of the area, close enough that a chauffeur can link them without the day turning into a drive.

Burford. The first proper Cotswold town on the road from London, and the easiest to reach. The tourism board's Burford guide describes the High Street sweeping downhill to the River Windrush, with a medieval bridge at the bottom and St John's Church, known for its medieval memorials, close by. It is a good first stop for coffee and a walk while the morning traffic is still behind you.

Bourton-on-the-Water. The village most people picture: the Windrush running through the centre under low stone bridges. The tourism board itself warns that it is often extremely busy, especially at weekends and in good weather, so go early or on a weekday. Families like the Model Village, a one-ninth scale replica of Bourton itself, and Birdland Park and Gardens.

Stow-on-the-Wold. Sitting nearly 800 ft above sea level, Stow is the highest of the Cotswold towns, on the old Roman Fosse Way. The tourism board notes that it has long been a hub for trade and travel, and the town's church has a door that the board credits with inspiring Tolkien.

Chipping Campden. For many people the finest of them all. The Chipping Campden guide explains that it was founded as a planned town in the late 12th century, that its Market Hall dates from 1627, and that the Church of St James is one of the great Cotswold wool churches. It is also where the 104-mile Cotswold Way begins or ends, so a short walk along the start of the trail is easy to fit in.

The protected landscape around all of them is the Cotswolds National Landscape, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that stretches from Warwickshire and Worcestershire in the north to Wiltshire and Bath in the south.

A one-day route from London, leg by leg

This is the route our signature day follows in spirit, with Windsor Castle in the morning and the villages in the afternoon. All distances and times are routed estimates on a clear road; the chauffeur adjusts on the day.

LegDistanceClear-road driveTime on foot
Mayfair to Windsor Castle35 km / 22 miabout 42 minabout 1 h 45 min
Windsor to Burford97 km / 60 miabout 1 h 15 minabout 45 min
Burford to Bourton-on-the-Water15 km / 10 miabout 18 minabout 1 hour, with lunch
Bourton to Stow-on-the-Wold6 km / 4 miabout 8 minabout 45 min
Stow to Chipping Campden16 km / 10 miabout 15 minabout 1 hour
Chipping Campden to Mayfair149 km / 93 miabout 2 h 10 min-

Add it up and you have roughly 4 hours 50 minutes of driving and about 5 hours 15 minutes on your feet, which is why the package runs for ten hours. Remember that Windsor Castle is closed to visitors on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, according to the Royal Collection Trust. If your free day falls midweek, swap the castle for a slower start in Burford, or follow our London to Windsor guide for other ways to see the town.

Without Windsor, a villages-only day is lighter: Mayfair to Burford, the four-village loop and home again comes to about 4 hours 30 minutes of driving, which fits inside an 8-hour full day with about three and a half hours in the villages themselves.

What a Cotswolds driver costs from London

Every Elly8.net price is per vehicle, not per person, and includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Parking in the villages and any road charges, such as London's Congestion Charge, are billed at cost.

VehicleSeats / large bagsWindsor and Cotswolds day (10 h)Full-day chauffeur (8 h)By the hour
Business Sedan3 / 2US$970US$775US$105
Business SUV / Van6 / 6US$1,245US$995US$135

First Class Sedan3 / 2US$1,565US$1,255US$170
Executive Sprinter12 / 12US$1,935US$1,550US$210

The ten-hour package is priced 8% below the hourly rate: ten hours by the hour in a business sedan would be US$1,050, against US$970 for the day trip. If the plan is villages only, the full-day chauffeur at US$775 in a business sedan is the better buy. Hourly bookings, with a 3-hour minimum and up to 12 hours at checkout, suit a day you want to keep open, or one that ends somewhere other than your hotel.

For a group, the Sprinter changes the arithmetic. Twelve people sharing a US$1,935 Sprinter works out to about US$161 each, purely as arithmetic for comparison; the fare is charged once, for the vehicle. Two families in a Business SUV each would pay US$2,490 for two cars, so one Sprinter is cheaper and keeps everyone together. The capacities above come from our fleet page, and the full list of London prices sits on the London chauffeur service page.

Which car for country roads

A business sedan is the right size for a couple or three friends with day bags. Families of four or five, or anyone picking up shopping along the way, are better in the Business SUV or van, which seats six. The First Class Sedan is the choice for an anniversary or a client day. For eight to twelve people, the Sprinter van with driver carries everyone in one vehicle; your chauffeur sets you down in each village centre and parks while you walk, so the size of the vehicle never becomes your problem.

Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer. Child seats are available on request: give the ages when you book and they are fitted before pickup.

Driving yourself, the train or a coach tour

There are honest alternatives, and for some travellers they are the better choice.

A rental car. Cheaper for two people on paper, but you drive on the left, cross London twice and spend the day looking for parking in villages where it is scarce. Our chauffeur vs car rental guide sets out where the numbers really land.

Rail and local buses. Public transport reaches parts of the Cotswolds, and the tourism board lists a heritage bus service linking Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold. For a solo traveller with a full week, slow-travelling by train and bus is pleasant and inexpensive. For a single day from London, the connections leave little time in the villages.

Group coach tours. Priced per person on a fixed timetable, a coach tour is good value for one or two people happy to keep to someone else's schedule. A private car wins when you are three or more, travelling with children or older parents, or want to linger in one village and skip another.

Adding Oxford, shopping or a night in the Cotswolds

Bicester Village, the designer outlet in Oxfordshire, sits on the way home: about 57 km (35 mi) and an hour from Chipping Campden, then 99 km (62 mi) and about 1 hour 25 minutes back to Mayfair, by routed estimate. A chauffeur waiting outside with the boot open is the practical way to shop there.

Many travellers stay a night or two in a Cotswold inn instead. In that case book one way: the web booker quotes a fixed price to any Cotswold address, and our city to city car service covers onward legs to Bath, Oxford or Heathrow. For a London-only day before or after, see London private tours by car, and for every option out of the city, our London day trip planner compares the routes side by side.

Going straight from Heathrow, and planning the day with the desk

Some travellers skip London on the way in. Heathrow sits on the right side of the city for the Cotswolds: by routed estimate, Terminal 5 to Burford is about 101 km (63 mi) and 1 hour 15 minutes on a clear road, and Chipping Campden about 1 hour 45 minutes. After an overnight flight, an hourly booking from the airport lets you stop for breakfast in Burford with the bags locked in the car, then carry on to a Cotswold hotel in the early afternoon. Give the desk your flight number so the chauffeur tracks the landing and waits in arrivals with a name board.

Whichever way you go, tell the desk what kind of day you want when you book: which villages matter most, whether you have a lunch reservation, and whether anyone in the group walks slowly. The chauffeur builds the order of stops around that, and around the weekend crowds in Bourton, rather than around a fixed script.

How booking works

  1. Choose the package. The Windsor and Cotswolds day, a full-day chauffeur or hourly, on the London prices page, with your hotel as the pickup.
  2. Choose the vehicle. Business or First Class sedan, SUV or van, or Executive Sprinter, and add any child seats.
  3. Reserve now. Fixed packages go straight to secure checkout in US$; anything else, such as a one-way drop at a Cotswold hotel, goes through the web booker. Confirmation arrives by email, and the chauffeur's details follow before the day.

Book any address

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Cotswolds from London by car?

Burford, the nearest of the classic Cotswold towns, is about 117 km (73 mi) from Mayfair and roughly 1 hour 40 minutes on a clear road. Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold are about two hours away, and Chipping Campden about 2 hours 10 minutes. These are routed estimates; west London traffic adds time at peak.

Can you do the Cotswolds as a day trip from London?

Yes, comfortably with a driver. Our signature ten-hour Windsor Castle and Cotswolds day leaves time for the castle and three or four villages. A villages-only day fits in an 8-hour full-day booking, with about three and a half hours spent walking rather than driving.

How much does a private driver to the Cotswolds cost?

The ten-hour Windsor and Cotswolds day costs from US$970 in a business sedan, US$1,245 in a Business SUV and US$1,935 in an Executive Sprinter. A full 8-hour day starts at US$775. Prices are per vehicle and all-in; parking and road charges are billed at cost.

Which Cotswold villages should we visit in one day?

Burford, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Campden form a tight loop, all within about 20 minutes of each other. Bourton gets very busy at weekends and in fine weather, so visit it early or on a weekday, and finish in Chipping Campden before the drive home.

Is it worth renting a car to drive to the Cotswolds?

For confident drivers on a longer stay, possibly. For a day from London, you drive on the left, cross the city twice and hunt for village parking. A chauffeur removes all three, and for three or more people the fixed fare often compares well with a rental plus fuel and parking.

Can we stay overnight and be collected the next day?

Yes. Book two one-way rides, London to your Cotswold hotel and back, or onward to Bath, Oxford or Heathrow. The web booker shows the fixed price for any address before you pay, and the chauffeur's details arrive before each pickup.
