Piraeus is close to central Athens: about 11 km (7 mi) by road from Syntagma Square by our routing, roughly 15 minutes on a clear road, and about 20 minutes on Metro Line 3. From Athens airport it is much further, about 49 km (30 mi), around 47 minutes by car on a clear road. The metro, the 24-hour 040 bus and a taxi at around €25 from the centre all work, and for a light traveller catching a ferry they are perfectly good choices.

What makes the port run harder than it looks is the port itself. Piraeus is the largest passenger port in Europe, the ferry and cruise quays stretch a long way along the waterfront, and on a summer morning thousands of people are trying to reach the right boat at the same time. A private car takes you, your luggage and your party to the gate or terminal for your ship. With Elly8.net any Piraeus address is quoted at a fixed price in the web booker, and for reference the published airport to Syntagma fare is from US$150 per vehicle in a business sedan.

What is the best way to get from Athens to Piraeus?

From central Athens, Metro Line 3 from Syntagma or Line 1 from Monastiraki reaches Piraeus in about 20 minutes, and a taxi costs around €25. With cruise luggage, a family or a tight ferry time, a pre-booked private car to your terminal or gate is simpler, at a fixed price per vehicle quoted in the web booker.

The answer changes with three things: where you start, how much luggage you have, and whether you are catching a ferry with a fixed departure or boarding a cruise ship with a check-in window.

See Athens prices and reserve

Know your port first

The Piraeus Port Authority describes Piraeus as the largest port in Europe for passenger traffic, with about 20 million passengers a year, and the main link between the mainland, the Aegean islands and Crete. Ferries and cruise ships use different parts of the waterfront, and the authority publishes a map of the gates and the destinations served from each. Your ferry ticket or cruise documents tell you where to go.

For ferries, the gate depends on the operator and the island. For cruises, the authority's cruise terminal page describes passenger terminals served by a free shuttle bus that runs between the terminals and the ships. That shuttle is useful once you are inside the port, but it does not bring you from Syntagma or the airport.

This is the core of the case for a car: public transport drops you at the port's edge, near the metro station, and the right boat may be a long walk further along the quay with your bags.

Option 1: the metro

Athens has two metro lines to Piraeus, per the official City of Athens public transport guide:

  • Line 3 runs from Syntagma to Piraeus in about 20 minutes, according to the City of Athens Piraeus guide, and continues all the way to the airport.
  • Line 1, the overground line known as ISAP, runs from Kifissia to Piraeus and meets Lines 2 and 3 at Attiki, Omonia and Monastiraki, so it suits hotels in the north of the city and around Omonia and Monastiraki.

A standard 90-minute ticket costs €1.20 on the OASA fare table. The metro runs from 5 am to midnight, with Lines 2 and 3 running later on Fridays and all night on Saturdays, the city guide says. It is quick, cheap and avoids the coast road traffic.

When it works: one or two travellers with a backpack or a cabin case, a ferry from a gate near the station, and time to spare.

When it does not: a cruise with large cases, a family with children and strollers, early-morning ferries before the busy hours, or a ship berthed at the far end of the port.

Option 2: the bus and the tram

The 040 bus runs from Piraeus to Syntagma 24 hours a day, the city's Piraeus guide notes, and the X80 express runs between Piraeus and Syntagma every half hour from 7 am to 9.30 pm from May through October. The tram also reaches Piraeus from Syntagma, in about an hour. They are all cheap and they all mean carrying your bags on and off public transport in summer traffic.

Option 3: a taxi

The city guide puts a taxi from Piraeus to the city centre at around €25 and says taxis line the port, especially in summer, though you may have to wait in line in high season. That is fair value for two or three people. In the other direction, a taxi from your hotel will take you into the port; have your terminal or gate written down, because the waterfront is long and the gates are numerous.

A standard taxi is tight for four people with cruise luggage, and a group of six needs two cars arriving at the same place at the same time.

Option 4: a pre-booked private car

The chauffeur collects you at your hotel at the time the desk sets, loads the bags, and drives you to the drop-off for your ship or the gate for your ferry. On disembarkation day the chauffeur meets you outside the terminal after you have collected your bags. See cruise port transfers for how this works in every port city we cover.

There is no fixed price-list fare for Piraeus on the Athens page because the right booking depends on where you start and whether you want stops. The web booker quotes any Piraeus address instantly at a fixed, all-in price per vehicle, charged in US dollars. For a day that combines a hotel checkout, a morning at the Acropolis and the ship, book by the hour: the hourly chauffeur costs from US$85 in a business sedan, US$110 in a business SUV and US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum, and the bags stay in the car while you sightsee.

From the airport straight to Piraeus

Many North Americans fly into Athens and leave the same day by ferry, or board a cruise the morning after landing. From the airport the options are:

  • Metro Line 3 to Piraeus, about 55 minutes according to the city guide, with your bags on the train for the whole ride;
  • the suburban railway, which the city guide says links Piraeus port directly with the airport;
  • the X96 express bus to Piraeus port, which runs 24 hours with an estimated 90-minute journey and a €5.50 fare;
  • a taxi from the rank outside Exit 3;
  • a private car, met inside arrivals and driven to the port, about 49 km (30 mi) and 47 minutes on a clear road by our routing.

For a ferry the same day, leave a generous margin. A delayed connection through a European hub is common enough, and ferry departures do not wait for late flights. A cruise boarding the next day is much safer: a night in Athens turns the trip into two short rides and gives you an evening under the Acropolis. Our guide to Athens airport to the city centre covers the first leg, from US$150 per vehicle to Syntagma.

Planning a pre-cruise or post-cruise day

The day before sailing. Airport to your hotel, then a light afternoon. Plenty of travellers use the evening for a short tour of the centre; see Athens private tours by car for routes that fit a few hours.

Sailing day. Check out, put the luggage in the car, and either go straight to the ship or take a morning tour with the bags aboard and reach the terminal within your boarding window. The private city highlights tour costs from US$340 in a business sedan to US$680 in an Executive Sprinter; ask the desk to end it at the port.

Disembarkation day. If your ship disembarks in the morning and your flight is in the evening, keep the car by the hour and fit in Cape Sounion or a long lunch on the Riviera before the airport; our Athens day tours guide lists the options. If you are flying the same morning, give the desk your ship and flight so the pickup leaves enough time.

Ferries back from the islands. Arriving from Mykonos or Santorini, give us the ferry operator and scheduled arrival; the chauffeur waits at the gate where your boat comes in. Ferries run late in rough weather, and the desk adjusts the pickup.

Vehicle sizing for cruise luggage

Cruise passengers travel heavy, and the vehicle matters more here than on any other Athens run. A business sedan takes three passengers and two large bags, which is tight for a cruise couple with two cases each. A Business SUV or First Class SUV takes six passengers and six bags, the right size for a couple with a lot of luggage or a family of four. An Executive Sprinter takes twelve passengers and twelve bags, which keeps a family group or a party of friends sailing together in one vehicle. See the fleet and group transportation.

Rides in Athens are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.

A fair verdict

For one or two light travellers on a ferry, the metro is the smart choice and costs €1.20. For two or three people with moderate luggage, a taxi at around €25 from the centre is reasonable value. A private car is worth it for cruise passengers with full luggage, for families and groups who want one vehicle, for same-day airport-to-ferry connections where time matters, and for anyone who wants to be dropped at the right gate rather than at the port entrance. Our chauffeur vs taxi comparison sets out the general reasoning.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Piraeus from central Athens?

About 11 km (7 mi) from Syntagma Square by road, roughly 15 minutes on a clear road by our routing, though traffic near the port on a summer morning can double that. Metro Line 3 takes about 20 minutes from Syntagma, according to the City of Athens guide.

How much is a taxi from Athens to Piraeus?

The official City of Athens guide puts a taxi from Piraeus to the city centre at around €25. A private car with Elly8.net is quoted in the web booker at a fixed price per vehicle, and includes the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity, with drop-off at your terminal or gate.

Can you go from Athens airport directly to Piraeus?

Yes. Metro Line 3 runs from the airport to Piraeus in about 55 minutes, and the X96 express bus runs 24 hours with an estimated 90-minute journey. A private car covers the 49 km (30 mi) in about 47 minutes on a clear road and meets you inside arrivals.

Will the driver take us to the right cruise terminal?

Yes. Give the desk your ship name and sailing date, and we confirm the terminal the line has been assigned. The chauffeur drops you at that terminal's drop-off. Inside the port, a free shuttle runs between the passenger terminals and the ships.

Is it safe to land and catch a ferry the same day?

It can work with a generous margin, but a delayed transatlantic flight can cost you the boat. If you do it, choose an early arrival and a late-afternoon ferry. A night in Athens before the ferry or cruise is the safer plan.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup. A 10% fee applies at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card.
