From the centre of Florence to Monterosso al Mare, the northernmost of the five Cinque Terre villages, is about 173 km (107 mi) by road, roughly 2 hours 17 minutes on a clear road. To La Spezia, the city at the southern end of the coast line, is about 146 km (91 mi) and 1 hour 45 minutes. Those are routed estimates from the public OSRM network, and the coast roads above the villages are slow and winding compared with the motorway that gets you there.
The honest answer to "should we drive to the Cinque Terre" is: drive to the edge, then take the train. The Cinque Terre National Park itself calls the train the ideal way to reach the villages, and once you are on the coast the five of them are minutes apart by rail. A private car is the best way to get from Florence to the line and back, with your day bags and a stop in Lucca or Pisa if you want one. It is not the way to hop between Vernazza and Manarola.
How long is the drive from Florence to the Cinque Terre?
Routed on the public OSRM network, central Florence to La Spezia is about 146 km (91 mi) and 1 hour 45 minutes on a clear road; to Monterosso al Mare it is about 173 km (107 mi) and 2 hours 17 minutes. A round trip means four to five hours of driving, so plan ten to eleven hours.
Most of the drive is motorway: west from Florence towards the coast, then north past Pisa and the marble country around Carrara to La Spezia. The last stretch to Monterosso or Levanto leaves the motorway for hill roads above the sea, which is where the time goes.
| Leg (routed estimate, clear road) | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Florence centre to La Spezia Centrale station | 146 km / 91 mi | about 1 h 45 min |

| La Spezia to Portovenere | 14 km / 9 mi | about 20 min |
| Florence centre to Lucca | 75 km / 47 mi | about 57 min |
| Lucca to La Spezia | 76 km / 47 mi | about 58 min |
| Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa, to La Spezia | 77 km / 48 mi | about 1 h 02 min |
| Florence centre to Pietrasanta | 108 km / 67 mi | about 1 h 23 min |

Why the train belongs in the plan
The five villages, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, are strung along a cliff coast with one railway threading through tunnels between them. The Cinque Terre National Park describes the train as the ideal means of transport for reaching the Cinque Terre, with frequent local trains, especially in summer, stopping at every village, and La Spezia as the terminus on the Pisa to Genoa line.
The park sells the Cinque Terre Treno card, which combines unlimited second-class regional travel on the La Spezia to Levanto line with access to the Verde Azzurro trail between Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia and to the Via dell'Amore. The park's card page lists one-day adult prices for 14 March to 1 November 2026 at €22.00, €29.50 or €35.00 depending on demand, and €17.30 from 2 November to 31 December 2026. The card is valid until midnight on the date printed on it. Prices for 2027 had not been published when we checked; look again before you travel.
So the plan for most visitors is simple. The car takes you to the line, you spend the day on trains, trails and in the villages, and the car collects you at the other end of the line.
The best way to use a car: drop at one end, collect at the other
This is the plan we suggest most often.
- Morning. The chauffeur collects you in Florence and drives to La Spezia Centrale, about an hour and three-quarters on a clear road.
- The coast. Buy the Treno card, ride north through Riomaggiore and Manarola, walk a section of trail if the park has it open, lunch in Vernazza.
- Afternoon. Finish in Monterosso, which the car can reach by road, where the chauffeur meets you at an agreed point.
- Evening. Drive back to Florence, about two and a quarter hours on a clear road.
The car does not sit idle with nothing to do: it repositions from La Spezia to Monterosso while you are on the train, about 40 minutes by road. You never backtrack, and you carry only a day bag.
The reverse works too, starting at Monterosso and ending at La Spezia, which puts the longer road leg first while everyone is fresh. Levanto, just north of Monterosso and the far end of the card's train line, is another pickup option.
Stops on the way
The coast day is already long, so a stop on the way is a choice, not a default. Three fit.
Lucca. About 57 minutes from Florence and 58 minutes on to La Spezia, Lucca is the most natural break. An hour on the walls or in the old town on the way back breaks the drive home.
Pisa. The Piazza dei Miracoli is about an hour from La Spezia. If you have not seen the tower yet, our guide to Florence to Pisa by car explains the timed climbs; on a Cinque Terre day, a walk around the square without a climb is the realistic version.
Pietrasanta. Pietrasanta, a small historic town about 108 km (67 mi) from Florence below the Apuan Alps and close to the motorway, makes a coffee-and-a-walk break for travellers who have seen Pisa and Lucca on another day.
Portovenere. Not on the way, but 20 minutes beyond La Spezia, Portovenere is a harbour village at the tip of the gulf. The car can take you to the harbour, so it suits travellers with limited mobility who still want a day on this coast without train platforms and steep lanes.
Pick one stop at most. With five hours of driving already in the day, two stops leaves too little time on the coast.
What a driver costs from Florence
A Cinque Terre day does not fit inside the eight-hour full-day chauffeur, so the clearest way to price it is by the hour from the Florence price list, with a three-hour minimum.
| Florence booking | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class Sedan | First Class SUV | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| By the hour, 3-hour minimum | US$85 / hour | US$110 / hour | US$140 / hour | US$130 / hour | US$170 / hour |
| Full-day chauffeur | US$630 | US$810 | US$1,035 | US$960 | US$1,255 |
| Ten hours by the hour (arithmetic) | US$850 | US$1,100 | US$1,400 | US$1,300 | US$1,700 |
| Eleven hours by the hour (arithmetic) | US$935 | US$1,210 | US$1,540 | US$1,430 | US$1,870 |
The last two rows simply multiply the published hourly rate; they are arithmetic for planning, not separate packages. Every fare is per vehicle and includes the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity. Motorway tolls and parking are billed at cost.
For a one-way transfer, for example Florence to a hotel in Monterosso or Levanto for two nights by the sea, enter both addresses in the web booker and the desk returns a fixed price per vehicle, charged in US dollars. The return to Florence, or onward to Milan or Lake Como, is quoted the same way.
A day trip or a night on the coast?
Be realistic about the day trip. Four to five hours of driving, plus a full day on trains and trails, makes a ten to eleven hour day. It works for energetic adults in late spring or early autumn. In high summer, with crowded trains and heat, or with young children, it is a lot.
The alternative is a night on the coast: a one-way car from Florence to a hotel at Monterosso, Levanto or La Spezia, two days on the train line at your own pace, then a car back or onward. You trade one long day for two relaxed ones, and the cost of the car is similar to the long day by the hour.
Choosing the vehicle
Capacities come from the fleet page. For a day trip, a Business Sedan for up to three people or a Business SUV for up to six is right; luggage space hardly matters. For a one-way transfer with suitcases, size by bags: two in a sedan, six in an SUV, twelve in an Executive Sprinter. For a group of seven to twelve, one Sprinter keeps everyone together; see group transportation. Child and booster seats are fitted on request before pickup.
Families, older travellers and groups
The Cinque Terre is a coast of steps. Station platforms, lanes down to the harbours and the trails themselves all involve climbing, and the trains are busy in season. That does not rule the day out for families or older travellers, but it changes the plan.
With young children, choose two villages rather than five, and let the car carry the stroller, snacks and changes of clothes between the start and the end of the line. With older travellers or anyone who finds stairs difficult, Portovenere by car plus a single train ride to one village is a gentler version of the same coast. For a group, one Executive Sprinter keeps everyone together on the road, and the group simply moves as one on the train.
Should you rent a car instead?
Some travellers plan to drive themselves. The motorway part is easy. The hard parts are the hill roads above the villages, parking on the coast in season, and the fact that you still end up on the train for the villages themselves. Italy's tourism portal notes that drivers from outside the EU need an international driving permit with their licence. Our chauffeur vs car rental page sets out the general trade-offs.
Practical notes
Start early. The routed times assume clear roads. Leaving Florence by eight puts you on the coast by ten, ahead of the busiest trains.
Check the trails. Trail access and the Treno card terms are set by the park. Check the park's site the day before you go and plan the train legs around what is open.
Agree the pickup point. Monterosso and La Spezia are both busy at the end of the day. The chauffeur confirms the meeting point by message on the day.
Gratuity is included. Standard gratuity is part of every Elly8.net fare, so there is nothing to settle in cash at the end.
Inland days instead. If the coast feels like too much driving, our Florence day trip guide covers Chianti, Siena and San Gimignano, all within about an hour of the city. The wine tours and private city tours pages describe the shorter options.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Florence to the Cinque Terre?
Routed on the public OSRM network, about 1 hour 45 minutes to La Spezia (146 km / 91 mi) and about 2 hours 17 minutes to Monterosso al Mare (173 km / 107 mi) on a clear road. The coastal roads above the villages are slow, and summer traffic can add time.
Can a car drive between the five villages?
Not practically. The villages sit on a cliff coast linked by one railway, and the national park describes the train as the ideal way to reach them. The best plan is a car to La Spezia or Monterosso, the train between villages, and a car back from the other end.
How much is a private driver from Florence to the Cinque Terre?
A day trip is best booked by the hour from US$85 an hour in a business sedan or US$110 in a business SUV, three-hour minimum. Ten to eleven hours is typical. A one-way transfer to a coast hotel is quoted as a fixed price per vehicle in the web booker.
What is the Cinque Terre Treno card?
A national park card with unlimited second-class regional train travel between La Spezia and Levanto and access to some trails. For 14 March to 1 November 2026 a one-day adult card costs €22.00 to €35.00 depending on demand, and €17.30 from 2 November.
Is a day trip from Florence to the Cinque Terre too much?
It is long: four to five hours of driving plus the day on the coast. It suits energetic adults in spring or autumn. With young children or in high summer, a one-way car to a coast hotel and a night by the sea is more comfortable.
Can we stop in Lucca or Pisa on the way?
Yes, one stop fits. Lucca is about an hour from both Florence and La Spezia, and Pisa is about an hour from La Spezia. Add the stop when you book and the desk includes it in the plan. With five hours of driving already in the day, two stops is too many.
