On the routed path, the car takes the A3 Napoli-Salerno motorway around the bay and then the SS145 Sorrentina along the peninsula. It is the same road a Positano transfer uses for most of its length, which is why Sorrento makes such an easy first base on the coast.
Four ways from the airport to Sorrento
The airport coach. Curreri, a private coach operator based in Vico Equense, runs a scheduled shuttle from Naples Airport to Sorrento and Positano. Its own site lists fares of €13 to Sorrento and €20 to Positano, with boarding at the airport bus parking area, and advises taking the coach at least five hours before your flight on the way back, since journeys can run longer in high season. For a solo traveller or a couple with a carry-on each, it is the cheapest direct option.
The licensed Naples taxi. The City of Naples sets fixed one-way fares per car from the city to the coast, published on its taxi service page in a tariff in force since 1 September 2024. The fare to Sorrento is €125 per car. It includes the airport supplement, night and holiday surcharges and luggage; motorway tolls and a €5 supplement for a minivan for more than four passengers are extra. Ask for the fixed fare before the ride starts; the driver must apply it and issue a receipt before departure.

When the coach or the taxi is the better choice. For one traveller with a carry-on and no schedule, the coach at €13 is hard to beat. For two to four travellers with ordinary bags, the city's €125 fixed taxi fare is good value, and it is likely to cost less than a pre-booked private car. Take it.
When a pre-booked driver is the better choice. A family after an overnight flight with car seats and four suitcases. A group of seven or more in one vehicle. A landing after the last coach of the day. A hotel in Massa Lubrense or on a private lane, where the access is planned with the desk before you land. Stops worth making on the way
Pompeii. The great archaeological site is only about 27 km (17 mi) from the airport, roughly half an hour, and from the ruins to Sorrento is about 26 km (16 mi), roughly 37 minutes. With a morning landing, a visit fits into the transfer. Allow at least three hours and buy entry in advance from the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. The luggage stays in the car while you walk.
Herculaneum. Closer to Naples and smaller than Pompeii, so a visit of about two hours is enough. Check times on the Herculaneum Archaeological Park site.
Vico Equense. The first town of the peninsula, about 44 km (27 mi) from the airport and 11 km (7 mi) before Sorrento, roughly 20 minutes on. A coffee stop with a view of the bay breaks the drive without adding much time.
Skip the stop if your flight lands in the afternoon or you are travelling with tired children; Pompeii is an easy day out from Sorrento later, either by car or on the Circumvesuviana, which stops at Pompei Scavi.

Choosing the vehicle
Use the fleet capacities. A business sedan carries three passengers and two bags; a business SUV six passengers and six bags; an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve. Families with full-size suitcases should book the SUV, which is also the more comfortable ride on the peninsula's bends. Child and booster seats are fitted on request before pickup; give the children's ages when you book. Groups travelling for a wedding or a reunion can move together in a Sprinter with driver.
Sorrento as a base for the coast
Sorrento suits travellers who want the coast within reach without staying on the cliffs. It has the Circumvesuviana back to Naples, about 70 minutes to Napoli Garibaldi every 30 minutes on the EAV timetable in force from 17 October 2026, and boats to Capri: the Capri tourism office gives the hydrofoil from Sorrento as about 20 minutes.
By car from Sorrento centre, Positano is about 16 km (10 mi), roughly 21 minutes on a clear road, and Amalfi about 31 km (20 mi), roughly 42 minutes, by our routed estimates. Arriving late, or with a connection
Most travellers from North America reach Naples on a connection through another European airport, and connections slip. Give us the final flight number when you book.
