In Budapest, a licensed taxi and an Uber cost the same. BKK, the city's transport authority, publishes one official taxi fare that applies at all times of day and to every licensed operator, and it lists Uber Taxi among those operators alongside Bolt, City Taxi, Elit Taxi and Főtaxi. So the question for a visitor is not which is cheaper per kilometre, but how you book, how much room you need and how much the timing matters.

A pre-booked private car is the third option. It costs more than a short taxi ride, but the price is fixed per vehicle before you travel, the chauffeur meets you by name and the vehicle is chosen for your group and bags. With Elly8.net, Budapest Airport (BUD) to the Danube embankment costs from US$115 in a business sedan to US$300 in an Executive Sprinter.

Which should you use in Budapest: taxi, Uber or a private car?

Use a licensed taxi or Uber for short trips around the city and for one or two travellers at short notice: both charge the same official fare. Use a pre-booked private car for airport arrivals, cruise disembarkation, groups with luggage, child seats, race days and full days out, when a fixed price and a reserved vehicle matter more.

How the official taxi fare works

BKK's taxi services page sets out the tariff in a single table: a base fare of HUF 1,300, an airport base fare of HUF 2,100, HUF 520 per km, and HUF 130 per minute for time spent travelling below 15 km/h. The taximeter starts after you get in and stops on arrival. The price is the same at every hour and for every licensed operator, and you can pay with cash or a physical or digital bank card.

To give a feel for real trips, here is some arithmetic for comparison only, using the published rates. Real fares depend on the route, the traffic and the meter.

TripDistance usedArithmeticAbout
Short hop in Pest, no slow traffic3 kmHUF 1,300 + 3 x 520HUF 2,860
Danube embankment to the City Park, 5 slow minutes7 kmHUF 1,300 + 7 x 520 + 5 x 130HUF 5,590
Airport to the Danube embankment, no slow traffic24 kmHUF 2,100 + 24 x 520HUF 14,580
Airport run with 15 slow minutes24 kmHUF 2,100 + 24 x 520 + 15 x 130HUF 16,530

The airport lines assume the HUF 2,100 airport base fare applies in place of the standard one. They show why a taxi is excellent value for one or two people, and why a group of five with luggage, needing two cars, may find one pre-booked vehicle simpler.

Trip by trip: what to use where

Arriving at Budapest Airport

The airport is about 24 km (15 mi) from the Danube embankment, about 32 minutes on a clear road. One or two travellers with light bags can take the 100E bus or a taxi. Families, groups, late arrivals and anyone who wants a person waiting with a name board should pre-book: the chauffeur tracks the flight and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. A Business SUV or Van from BUD costs US$150 and takes six passengers and six large bags. After a long-haul connection through a European hub, passport control and a slow baggage belt can take a while; the chauffeur waits through it, and if a connection is missed, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup to the new flight. See airport transfers and meet and greet.

Leaving for an early flight

A 05:00 departure for a transatlantic connection is the trip where certainty counts most. You can pre-order a taxi by phone or in an app, and the fare will be the official one. A pre-booked chauffeur is assigned and confirmed in advance at a fixed price in US$, the same fare as the arrival transfer. Tell us your terminal and the airline's check-in time, and the desk sets the pickup with a margin for morning traffic on the airport road, so the only thing you need to do is be in the lobby.

Getting off a Danube river cruise

River ships tie up along the embankments in the city centre, and on disembarkation mornings several can empty at once, with every guest heading for the airport or a hotel. Taxis and app rides are in demand exactly then. Give us the ship, the cruise line, the berth and the time you leave the ship, and the chauffeur meets you at the agreed point with a name board. See cruise port transfers.

Buda Castle and the Castle District

The hilltop Buda Castle quarter is across the river from most Pest hotels. A taxi or Uber is ideal for getting up the hill for a few hours. If you want the Castle, the Hungarian Parliament and the baths in one day with the car waiting at each stop, the private city highlights tour costs from US$340 in a business sedan to US$680 in an Executive Sprinter. See private city tours.

The thermal baths

The Széchenyi Thermal Bath in the City Park is about 7 km (5 mi) and 12 minutes from the Danube embankment, and about 5 km (3 mi) and 8 minutes from the Parliament, by routed estimate. This is a classic taxi or Uber trip: short, simple and good value on the meter, and on the published rates the arithmetic in the table above suggests a fare of a few thousand forints. A private car only makes sense as part of a longer day, for example the baths in the morning and the Castle in the afternoon with lunch in between.

A night out

The streets around Deák Ferenc tér and the Gozsdu Courtyard, which BKK describes as a lively area of clubs, ruin bars and cultural venues, are where many evenings end. An app taxi home is the natural choice for one or two people. For a group dinner with a fixed return time, or a formal evening, the evening out and event night package costs from US$425 in a business sedan to US$850 in an Executive Sprinter, with the car on standby. The chauffeur follows local rules on everything inside the vehicle. See event transportation.

Race day at the Hungaroring

The Hungarian Grand Prix is scheduled from 30 July to 1 August 2027 at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, about 24 km (15 mi) from the embankment by routed estimate. On race weekend, roads towards the circuit are slow and demand for cars is high. A full-day chauffeur, from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, leaves early and meets you at an agreed point after the race. See sports event transportation.

A day on the Danube Bend

North of the city, Szentendre and Visegrád make the classic day out. The signature 6-hour Danube Bend package costs from US$470 in a business sedan to US$940 in an Executive Sprinter, with stops as you choose. A taxi is not designed for this, and an app ride would need re-requesting at each stop.

Moving on to Vienna

Budapest to Vienna is about 244 km (152 mi) by road, a door-to-door transfer priced on the web booker. See our guide to Vienna to Budapest by car, which covers the route in both directions, and city to city car service.

Four mistakes visitors make

Getting into an unmarked car. Whatever the driver says, a car without the yellow livery, the door marking and the fare table is not a licensed Budapest taxi. Order by app or phone, or pre-book.

Assuming the app is cheaper. At home, the app and the taxi are different products with different prices. Here they share one official tariff, so choose by convenience, not by habit.

Splitting a family across two cars. Two taxis with four suitcases means two meters, two drivers to find and the risk of arriving at different times. One Business SUV or Van takes six people and six large bags at one fixed fare.

Leaving the airport run to chance on a busy morning. On cruise turnaround days and in the summer event season, demand for cars peaks. A car booked the day before, whether a taxi ordered ahead or a chauffeur, takes the uncertainty out of the last morning of the trip.

Spotting a licensed taxi

Licensed taxis are the only ones to use, whichever way you order. BKK describes the standard signage: yellow cars marked "qualified Budapest taxi" on the left front door, the official fare table on the dashboard and on both rear doors, and an internal licence plate with the taxi's registration and the driver's licence number on the rear side windows. BKK recommends ordering by app or by phone. If something goes wrong, note the registration or the licence number on the right front door; BKK can investigate a complaint with those details.

Public transport is part of the answer

For solo travellers, BKK's 100E Airport Express runs from the airport to Deák Ferenc tér via Kálvin tér in about 40 minutes for HUF 2,500, paid by bank card on board, and the metro and trams cover the centre. On a sunny day, the walk along the Pest embankment is half the point of being in Budapest.

Frequently asked questions

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Budapest?

No. BKK lists Uber Taxi among the licensed taxi operators and states that the official fare is the same at all times and for all operators: HUF 1,300 base fare, HUF 520 per km and HUF 130 per minute below 15 km/h. The difference is how you book, not the tariff.

How much is a taxi from Budapest Airport to the centre?

Airport trips start from the HUF 2,100 airport base fare and add the distance and slow-traffic rates. As arithmetic only, 24 km at HUF 520 per km comes to about HUF 14,600 before any slow-traffic minutes. An Elly8.net car is US$115 per vehicle, fixed.

When is a private car worth it in Budapest?

For airport arrivals with family or a group, cruise disembarkation mornings, child seats, race days at the Hungaroring, the Danube Bend and full days with several stops. For short hops around the city, a licensed taxi or Uber is the better value.

Can I pay a Budapest taxi by card?

Yes. BKK says you can pay with cash or with physical and digital bank cards in Budapest taxis. App rides are paid in the app. Elly8.net bookings are paid by card in US$ when you book, with standard gratuity included.

How do I recognise a licensed Budapest taxi?

Look for a yellow car with "qualified Budapest taxi" on the left front door, the official fare table on the dashboard and rear doors, and the internal licence plate on the rear side windows. BKK recommends ordering by app or by phone.

Can you take us to the Hungaroring and back?

Yes. Book a full-day chauffeur, from US$630 in a business sedan, for the race weekend of 30 July to 1 August 2027. The chauffeur leaves early because traffic towards Mogyoród is heavy, and meets you at an agreed point after the race.
