A Dulles taxi is one company, one stand and one meter. Washington Flyer holds the airport's taxi concession, its cabs wait on the lower level of the Main Terminal around the clock, and every fare is calculated on a meter whose rates the airport publishes. You do not need a reservation to leave the airport, and the cabs take cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.
For most two-person trips into Washington or the Virginia suburbs, the taxi is a sensible, fairly priced choice, and we say so below with the airport's own numbers. A pre-booked car makes more sense for a narrower set of trips: late international arrivals, groups and heavy luggage, children who need seats fitted before you land, and travellers who need a fixed figure rather than a meter reading. This guide covers both, from the Elly8.net desk that books Dulles pickups daily.
How much is a taxi from Dulles?
Washington Flyer taxis are metered. The airport estimates about US$65 to US$73 to Washington, DC, US$47 to Tysons Corner, US$28 to Reston, US$69 to Bethesda and US$73 to Reagan National. Tolls are added, and a tip is extra. An Elly8.net business sedan to downtown DC is US$255, fixed and all-in.
Those estimates come from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority's estimated taxi fares page, which publishes a map of approximate fares effective from January 2024 and notes that mileage and fares are approximate and subject to change. They are a good guide for planning, but the meter decides the final amount.
| From Dulles to | Approximate distance | Airport's estimated taxi fare |
|---|---|---|
| Reston | 8 mi | US$28 |
| Sterling or Ashburn | 8 to 10 mi | US$28 to US$32 |
| Tysons Corner | 17 mi | US$47 |
| Leesburg | 17 mi | US$47 |
| Rosslyn | 25 mi | US$61 |
| Pentagon City | 26 mi | US$67 |
| Washington, DC | 26 to 30 mi | US$65 to US$73 |
| Bethesda or Chevy Chase | 27 mi | US$69 |
| Reagan National Airport | 28.5 mi | US$73 |
| Mount Vernon | 40 mi | US$97 |
| BWI Airport | 59 mi | US$138 |
| Annapolis | 64 mi | US$149 |
For comparison, the Elly8.net grid for Dulles to downtown DC runs from US$255 in a business sedan to US$665 in an Executive Sprinter, with chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet included. Addresses off the price list, such as Tysons or Bethesda, are priced in the web booker before you pay.

How the Dulles taxi meter works
The airport publishes the rates the driver must use on every trip:
- US$3.50 for the first quarter mile or part of it.
- US$0.54 for each additional quarter mile, which works out to US$2.16 a mile.
- US$0.54 for each 81 seconds of waiting time, or US$24 an hour. Waiting time counts while the cab is stopped or slowed below 10 mph, and for stops you ask for.
- US$1.50 for each additional passenger in a party, with one child aged five or younger carried free when travelling with an older person.
- A US$5.00 surcharge on every trip starting or ending at Dulles.
- Tolls are added to the final meter amount, provided the driver told you about the toll and offered a route without one.
Two things follow from those rules. First, the stop-and-go part of the trip is what moves the fare. A clear run down the Dulles Access Road costs close to the estimate; a Friday at 5 pm with I-66 at a crawl adds the waiting-time rate on top. Second, groups pay a little more per extra person, which is unusual compared with app rides and with our per-vehicle prices. Four adults add US$4.50 to the meter before the ride starts.
Airline vouchers are accepted for the destination on the voucher, redeemed at the lesser of the meter or the voucher value, and the airport notes that gratuity is at the passenger's discretion and expense.
Where the Dulles taxi stand is
According to the airport's Washington Flyer taxi page, you follow the Ground Transportation or Taxi signs to the lower level of the terminal and go down the ramp to Door 1 or Door 7. A customer service representative is on duty 24 hours a day, so there is always someone to put you in a cab.
That is a different place from the ride-app pickup. Uber and Lyft use the separate 3rd curb outside baggage claim, through Doors 2, 4 or 6, in zones 3A to 3H. If you are weighing those two options against each other for a trip into the city, our companion post on Uber, taxi or chauffeur from IAD to DC puts all four ways side by side.
A pre-booked chauffeur meets you somewhere else again: inside arrivals, at baggage claim, holding a name board, so there is no line and no curb to find. For a party of several adults, that also means the bags go straight from the carousel to a vehicle sized for them, rather than a second look at the taxi line once everyone sees how much luggage there is. Our Dulles airport car service prices the SUV and the Sprinter before you fly.
What the taxis can and cannot do
The airport's taxi FAQs answer the practical questions most travellers have:
- Child seats. Available on request for passengers leaving the airport.
- Group size. Large vehicles seat up to six passengers with luggage.
- Accessibility. Several wheelchair-accessible vehicles are in the fleet.
- Receipts. Card fares can be traced by phone with the last four digits of the card.
- Reservations to the airport. Washington Flyer takes reservations by phone, and a pre-paid online booking, preferably 24 hours ahead.
- Trips that do not touch the airport. Not possible. Washington Flyer is exclusive to Dulles and can only carry passengers to or from it, so it cannot take you from your hotel to a dinner downtown.
The airport brochure also states that the cabs must be under six years old. Elly8.net partner vehicles are 4 model years or newer, or 7 for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.
Going to Dulles from the city by taxi
Heading the other way, any DC cab can take you to Dulles on its own meter. The District's Department of For-Hire Vehicles sets those rates: US$4.00 for the first eighth of a mile, US$2.56 for each additional mile, US$25 an hour waiting, and US$1.00 for additional passengers regardless of how many, plus any airport surcharge or toll the driver pays, as listed on the DFHV taxicab fares page. On a 30-mile run that per-mile rate adds up, and the waiting-time charge runs whenever traffic stops.
For an early-morning departure, a pre-booked car removes the question of whether a cab will be free at 5 am. Our Dulles round trip in a business sedan is US$485, and a one-way drop from your address is priced in the web booker before you pay, fixed and all-in.
When the taxi is the right call
Be honest with yourself about the trip. The taxi wins when:
- You are one or two people with normal luggage going to Reston, Herndon, Tysons or Ashburn. At US$28 to US$47 on the airport's estimates, no chauffeur price will compete.
- You land in daylight, mid-week, outside the evening peak, and nobody is waiting on you.
- You do not know your flight or plans in advance and simply want the next car.
- You need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle on arrival, which the concession advertises.
When a pre-booked car wins
The fixed fare earns its premium in five situations:
- The flight is late or international. We track it, the chauffeur adjusts to the real landing, and you receive complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. You walk out of customs to a name board.
- You have more than two people or more than three bags. A business SUV at US$335 to downtown carries six passengers and six bags, per vehicle, with no additional-passenger charge. An Executive Sprinter at US$665 carries twelve with bags.
- You need car seats installed and checked before you arrive. Child seats are on request at booking, fitted before pickup.
- The day continues after the airport. A taxi from Dulles cannot stay with you. An hourly chauffeur at US$100 an hour in a business sedan (3-hour minimum) can meet you at the airport and stay for a day of meetings on Capitol Hill and in Arlington.
- Someone else is paying. A fixed price on a confirmation email, and monthly invoicing on a corporate account, are easier to approve than a meter receipt.
A worked example: four adults, downtown hotel, Friday evening
Take a group of four landing at 5:30 pm on a Friday, heading to a hotel near the Convention Center. The airport's estimate for Washington, DC is US$65 to US$73. Add US$4.50 for the three additional passengers, the waiting-time rate for whatever the Toll Road and I-66 do at that hour, any toll, and a tip, and the cab is still likely to cost well under our price. Four people in one sedan-sized taxi with four suitcases is the real constraint, which is why many groups that size need a larger vehicle anyway.
The same group in an Elly8.net business SUV pays US$335, fixed, or under US$84 each, with the gratuity already included and the bags in the back. The verdict: if the group fits comfortably and the budget is tight, take the cab. If the bags do not fit, or the group needs to arrive together for a 7 pm dinner, book the SUV.
Other airports and onward trips
If you have a choice of airports, Reagan National is far closer to downtown and our business sedan from DCA is US$125; BWI to downtown DC is US$270. For BWI specifically, see Uber from BWI to DC. Travellers continuing to Baltimore or Philadelphia can book a one-way city to city car service straight from the terminal. For a general look at the trade-offs, see chauffeur vs taxi.
Rides in Washington, DC are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Cancellation is the same on every booking: free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I get a taxi at Dulles Airport?
Follow the Ground Transportation or Taxi signs to the lower level of the Main Terminal and go down the ramp to Door 1 or Door 7. Washington Flyer runs the stand 24 hours a day with a customer service representative on duty, and no reservation is needed to leave the airport.
How much is a Dulles taxi to downtown DC?
The airport estimates about US$65 to US$73 to Washington, DC, depending on the address, calculated on the meter. That includes the US$5 Dulles surcharge but not tolls or a tip, and heavy traffic adds waiting time at US$24 an hour. An Elly8.net business sedan is US$255, fixed and all-in.
Do Dulles taxis take credit cards?
Yes. The airport states that all Washington Flyer cabs accept cash, American Express, Visa, Mastercard and Discover, as well as airline vouchers for the destination shown on the voucher. If you pay by card and need a receipt later, the company can trace it by phone with the last four digits.
Can a Dulles taxi take more than four people?
Washington Flyer has larger vehicles that seat up to six passengers with luggage, and each additional passenger adds US$1.50 to the meter. An Elly8.net business SUV carries up to six passengers and six bags for one fixed price of US$335 to downtown DC, with no per-person charge.
Is a taxi or a pre-booked car better for a late international arrival?
A taxi is always available at the stand, but you join the line after customs and pay the meter. A pre-booked chauffeur tracks the flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board and charges a fixed price, which most families and business travellers find easier after a long flight.
Can I book an Elly8.net car to Dulles from my hotel?
Yes. Enter your hotel and Dulles in the web booker and it shows a fixed, all-in price before you pay, for a sedan, SUV or Sprinter. If you also need the arrival, a business sedan round trip between Dulles and downtown DC is US$485. Tolls are billed at cost.
