An Uber from Houston to Galveston works, and for one or two people with light bags on a quiet afternoon it can be the cheapest door-to-door option. What makes the trip harder to price than a city ride is its length. Hobby Airport is about 42 miles (68 km) from the cruise terminals, downtown is about 52 miles (83 km), the Galleria about 57 miles (92 km) and Bush Intercontinental about 71 miles (115 km). Every app fare, taxi meter and hourly rate scales with those miles, and a cruise morning puts thousands of people on the same stretch of I-45 at once.
This guide, from the Elly8.net reservations desk, lays out the route, the taxi meter maths using the City of Houston's own 2026 rates, how rideshare pricing behaves on ship days, and what a fixed, pre-booked car includes. It also says plainly when the app or a cab is the better call, because for a lot of travellers it is.
How much is an Uber from Houston to Galveston?
No app publishes a fixed Houston to Galveston fare. Uber and Lyft set the price when you request, and it climbs when demand spikes, such as on cruise embarkation mornings. Taxis run on the meter or a company flat rate. An Elly8.net car is quoted in the web booker and fixed before you pay, with Houston hourly rates from US$95.
The app shows an upfront price once you enter both addresses, so check it a day before and again at the time you plan to travel. Demand moves it most: a ship arriving and another departing on the same morning sends a wave of requests at the same hour. Distance and time come next, and tolls and fees are added on top.
The Port of Galveston names Uber and Lyft as the rideshare providers for the port in its official arrival and departure guide, so an app ride to the terminal is a recognised option rather than a workaround.

The route: distances and drive times
The drive is straightforward: south on I-45 (the Gulf Freeway) across the causeway onto the island, then Harborside Drive to the cruise terminals. The port asks passengers to confirm their terminal before setting off, Terminal 10, 16, 25 or 28, because the signs at the port route you to the right entrance.
| Starting point | Road distance to the cruise terminals | Clear-road drive | What the port says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby Airport (HOU) | about 42 mi (68 km) | about 1 hr | "just a 45-minute drive" |
| Downtown Houston | about 52 mi (83 km) | about 1 hr 5 min | - |
| The Galleria and Uptown | about 57 mi (92 km) | about 1 hr 10 min | - |
| Bush Intercontinental (IAH) | about 71 mi (115 km) | about 1 hr 35 min | "about 1.5 hours away" |
| Space Center Houston | about 32 mi (51 km) | about 40 min | - |
Our figures are routed clear-road times; treat them as the minimum. Weekday rush hour on the Gulf Freeway, a summer storm or a crash on the causeway can add a great deal, and on embarkation days Harborside Drive slows as every car and coach queues for the same terminals. Hobby is the practical airport for anyone flying in to sail.
Rideshare to Galveston: what moves the price and what to watch
Price on the day. The upfront price can be very different at 7 a.m. on a ship morning and at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday. Uber offers Reserve, which lets you schedule a ride up to 90 days ahead and, according to the company, lock the price; Lyft also lets riders schedule airport rides in advance. Scheduling solves part of the uncertainty, but the locked price is still a rideshare fare, set by the app.
Pickup at the airport. At Hobby, app rides load in Curb Zone 5 outside baggage claim, reached by the door nearest Carousel 4, according to the Hobby taxi and ride app page. At IAH, pickups are at specific terminal doors; our guide to Uber at IAH walks through each one. Either way you wheel your cases to the curb, request, and wait.
Luggage. A standard app car takes two people and their cruise luggage only if the cases are modest. A family of four with a week's luggage needs an XL or two cars, and two cars means two fares and two arrival times at the terminal.
The return trip. Getting off the ship, a whole terminal disembarks in a few hours. Requesting a ride at the terminal at the same time as several thousand other passengers is where app prices and waits behave least predictably.
None of this makes rideshare a poor choice, only a variable one. Our comparison of a chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft goes deeper into those trade-offs.
Taxi to Galveston: the meter maths
Houston taxis are regulated by the City's Administration and Regulatory Affairs department, which publishes the rates. Under the 2026 taxicab meter rate schedule, published in December 2025, the daytime meter starts at US$3.72 for the first 1/11 mile and adds US$2.97 for each additional mile; the night rate starts at US$4.72 with the same per-mile charge, and waiting time is charged at US$24.00. The airport zone fares on that schedule cover addresses inside the City of Houston zones, and Galveston sits well outside them.
That gives a rough sense of the meter cost for the drive, before waiting time, airport surcharges and tip:
| Trip | Distance | Approximate meter at the daytime rate |
|---|---|---|
| Hobby to the cruise terminals | about 42 mi (68 km) | about US$128 |
| Downtown to the cruise terminals | about 52 mi (83 km) | about US$158 |
| IAH to the cruise terminals | about 71 mi (115 km) | about US$215 |
Those are our calculations from the published rate, not quotes. The Port of Galveston notes that taxis are available at both Houston airports and that many taxi companies offer flat-rate rides to the port, so ask the driver or the company for a flat price before you set off. At Hobby, taxis load in Curb Zone 2 outside baggage claim, and the airport adds a US$1.25 departure surcharge plus US$1.00 for late-night trips between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

What a pre-booked chauffeur costs, and what is in the price
Galveston is not one of the fixed routes on our Houston price panel, so the web booker quotes it for your exact pickup, terminal, date and vehicle, and the price is fixed before you pay. The published Houston prices give you a yardstick. Hobby to the Galleria is US$180 in a business sedan and US$470 in an Executive Sprinter; IAH to the Galleria is US$235 to US$615. Hourly service, as directed, runs from US$95 an hour in a business sedan to US$190 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum.
What you are paying for is the set of things neither an app nor a cab can promise in advance:
- A fixed, all-in price. Chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and a standard gratuity are included, and airport pickups include meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The price does not move with ship-day demand or freeway traffic.
- The right vehicle for the luggage. A business sedan takes up to three passengers and two bags, a business SUV up to six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to twelve passengers and twelve bags, according to our fleet page. Cruise luggage is the main reason families book the SUV.
- Meet and greet with flight tracking. At Hobby the chauffeur meets you in baggage claim, which is where the airport's own guidance says pre-arranged drivers should meet passengers, and the pickup adjusts to your actual landing time. Complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included.
- One booking for the group. Twelve people in one Sprinter arrive together, with their bags in one place, instead of four app cars arriving at different times.
Rides in Houston are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.
The honest side-by-side
| Option | What you pay | Luggage reality | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber or Lyft, standard car | Upfront app price, varies with demand | Two people with modest cases | Light travellers off-peak |
| Uber or Lyft, XL or SUV tier | Higher app price, varies with demand | Up to six people, depending on the vehicle | Small families comfortable with a live price |
| Taxi from Hobby | Meter (roughly US$128 by our maths) or an agreed flat rate | Standard car | Two people who confirm a flat rate first |
| Drive and park | Fuel plus port parking, reserved in advance | Your own car | Texans driving in from home |
| Elly8.net business SUV | Fixed price from the web booker | Up to six passengers and six bags | Families with cruise luggage |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | Fixed price from the web booker | Up to twelve passengers and twelve bags | Groups sailing together |
For travellers driving from elsewhere in Texas, the port's own parking is worth considering: its cruise FAQ says the economy lot includes a complimentary shuttle and that shuttles run about every 5 to 7 minutes, while some lots are close enough to walk.
When each option is the right call
Take the app if you are one or two people with carry-on-sized bags, travelling outside the embarkation rush, and comfortable checking the price on the day. Schedule it in advance if you want more certainty.
Take a taxi if you land at Hobby, there is a short line at Curb Zone 2, and the driver agrees a flat rate you are happy with before loading the bags.
Drive if you live within a few hours of the island and would rather pay for port parking than for two transfers.
Book a chauffeur if you land late or early and cannot risk a long app wait, you are a family with child seats and a week of luggage, you are a group that would otherwise need three or four cars, you need a fixed number for a corporate or incentive budget, or you are arriving from IAH, where the 71-mile run makes every variable larger.
Coming back from the ship
Disembarkation is the leg most people under-plan: passengers leave in waves and porters move luggage to the loading areas. With a pre-booked cruise port transfer, you give the desk the ship, the terminal and your flight time, and the chauffeur meets you at the passenger loading area. If your flight leaves from IAH, allow generously: the 71-mile drive, check-in and security all sit between the gangway and the gate. Hobby, closer and simpler, is the forgiving choice for a same-day flight.
Staying on in Houston? The same car can drop you at a hotel in Uptown, downtown or near the Texas Medical Center; the Houston city page lists every fixed airport transfer price and package.
Turning the transfer into a day out
For travellers not sailing, Galveston is a day trip rather than a transfer. The signature Houston package is an 8-hour day to Space Center Houston and Galveston, from US$700 in a business sedan to US$1,400 in an Executive Sprinter. Space Center Houston sits roughly halfway, about 32 miles (51 km) short of the cruise terminals, so a morning there and an afternoon on the Strand and the Seawall fits a single day comfortably. Visit Galveston, the island's tourism site, lists what is open by season.
One point from the port's guide: the Galveston Island Trolley links island hotels and attractions but does not stop at the port, although many island hotels run their own shuttles to the terminal on departure day. For a Houston city tour, see private city tours.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Houston to Galveston?
From Hobby Airport, about 42 miles (68 km), which the Port of Galveston describes as a 45-minute drive; we plan about an hour. From downtown it is about 52 miles (83 km), from the Galleria about 57 miles (92 km), and from IAH about 71 miles (115 km), which the port puts at around 1.5 hours. Rush hour and ship-day queues add time.
Is Uber allowed at the Port of Galveston?
Yes. The port's official arrival guide names Uber and Lyft as the rideshare providers for the port. You request the ride as normal; on busy embarkation and disembarkation mornings, expect higher app prices and longer waits, and allow extra time to reach the terminal before your check-in slot.
Is Hobby or IAH better for a Galveston cruise?
Hobby, for most travellers. It is about 29 miles (47 km) closer to the cruise terminals than IAH and has a single, compact terminal. IAH handles more international long-haul flights, so it can be the only choice if you are flying in from Europe or Asia; in that case book a car that tracks your landing.
Can an Elly8.net car take a family and cruise luggage?
Yes. A business SUV seats up to six passengers with up to six bags, and an Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve with up to twelve bags. Child seats are available on request; add the number and the children's ages when you book so the seats are fitted before pickup.
What does a fixed price include?
The chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, a standard gratuity and, on airport pickups, meet and greet with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The Galveston price is quoted in the web booker before you pay and does not change with traffic or demand.
Can we stop at Space Center Houston on the way?
Yes. The 8-hour Space Center Houston and Galveston day trip, from US$700 in a business sedan, covers exactly that. For a transfer with a short stop, enter it as a multi-stop booking in the web booker, or ask the desk for an hourly booking with the 3-hour minimum.
