A Houston airport taxi is one of the more predictable cabs in North America: trips from Hobby (HOU) and Bush Intercontinental (IAH) to addresses inside the city are charged by fixed zone fares set by the City of Houston, so you can know the price before you leave the curb. Rideshare is the flexible alternative, priced live by the app. A pre-booked private car sits on the other side of both, with a fixed price, a chauffeur inside arrivals and a vehicle sized to your group.
None of the three is always right. This guide sets out the real taxi numbers from the City's 2026 rate schedule, where each option boards at both airports, and a scenario-by-scenario verdict from the Elly8.net reservations desk, including the many trips where a cab or an app ride is the sensible choice.
Is a taxi or an Uber cheaper from Houston's airports?
It depends on the moment. Taxi fares from Hobby and IAH are fixed by zone under the City's 2026 schedule, for example US$35.28 from Hobby to downtown by day, plus a departure surcharge and tip. Uber and Lyft prices are set live and rise at busy times. Off-peak, the app often wins; at peak times, the zone fare often does.
The fair way to decide at the curb is to open the app, compare its upfront price with the zone fare posted at the taxi stand, and take whichever is lower for your group and luggage. Where a pre-booked car comes in is when you need the answer before you fly, or when the group, the hour or the bags make both curbside options awkward.

How Houston airport taxi fares work
The City of Houston's Administration and Regulatory Affairs department licenses taxis and sets their rates. Its 2026 taxicab rate schedule, published in December 2025, does three things.
Airport zone fares. Trips from each airport into the City are divided into numbered zones with a flat fare per zone. From IAH there are ten zones, priced from US$46.13 to US$141.71 in the daytime; from Hobby there are eleven, priced from US$35.28 to US$116.61. Night trips cost US$1.00 more in every zone. Downtown is zone 2 from both airports: US$35.28 by day from Hobby and US$71.22 from IAH. The zone maps are published on the City's taxicab page and posted near the pickup areas at both airports.
Meter rates. Outside the zone system, the meter starts at US$3.72 for the first 1/11 mile by day (US$4.72 at night) and adds US$2.97 for each additional mile. Waiting time is charged at US$24.00.
Airport surcharges. These are set by the airports rather than in the zone table. IAH adds a US$2.75 departure surcharge and Hobby a US$1.25 departure surcharge, and both add US$1.00 for late-night trips between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Senior citizens receive a 10% discount at both airports.
One caution: the Hobby taxi page still lists approximate fares of US$29 to downtown, US$35 to the Medical Center and NRG Park, US$41 to the NASA Space Center, US$59 to the Galleria and US$76 to IAH. Those figures predate the City's 2026 increase, so expect the zone fare at the stand to be higher. Tip is not included in either set of numbers.
Where each option boards
| Hobby (HOU) | Bush Intercontinental (IAH) | |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi | Curb Zone 2, outside baggage claim | Door A-115, Door C-105 and Door E-103 |
| Uber, Lyft and other apps | Curb Zone 5, via the door nearest Carousel 4 | Door A-114, Doors C-103 and C-104, Terminal E Level 2 Zone 5 |
| METRO bus | - | 500 IAH Downtown Direct, Terminal E Door E201, US$4.50 |
| Pre-arranged chauffeur | Meets you in baggage claim | Limo reception area or baggage claim by terminal; Terminal E Door 103 |
Hobby is the simpler airport: one compact terminal, a short walk to baggage claim and every curb option within a few steps. Its page lists Get Me, GreenLight, Lyft, Uber and Wingz as the ride apps serving HOU. At IAH, the terminal matters more, and Terminal B South passengers ride the Skyway to Terminal A or C to reach an app pickup. We cover each IAH door in detail in Uber at IAH: pickup zones and surge pricing.
The Hobby limousine and sedan page adds two rules worth knowing: drivers picking up at the airport must be badged and may not solicit fares, and passengers should not accept a ride without a prearranged reservation.
What a private car costs from each airport
Elly8.net publishes fixed, all-in prices from both airports to the Galleria and Uptown. Each includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, a standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
| Vehicle | Passengers and bags | From Hobby (HOU) | From IAH |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business sedan | 3 and 2 | US$180 | US$235 |
| Business SUV | 6 and 6 | US$235 | US$310 |
| First Class SUV | 6 and 6 | US$290 | US$380 |
| First Class sedan | 3 and 2 | US$315 | US$415 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 and 12 | US$470 | US$615 |
Round trips cost less than two one-ways: from US$345 to US$895 for Hobby and from US$450 to US$1,170 for IAH. Any other address, from the Energy Corridor to Sugar Land, is priced in the web booker before you pay. The full panel is on the Houston city page.
Set against a single traveller, the taxi is clearly cheaper. Set against a group, the arithmetic changes: a Sprinter for twelve from Hobby is US$470, about US$39 a person, with every bag in the same vehicle and one chauffeur waiting inside.
Which to use when: a scenario guide
| Your arrival | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One traveller, carry-on, Hobby, weekday afternoon, downtown hotel | Taxi or app | Short trip, known zone fare, no group or luggage to manage |
| One traveller, IAH, daylight, staying near the convention centre | METRO 500 | US$4.50 to the George R. Brown, every 30 minutes until 8 p.m. |
| Two people, light bags, off-peak | App, after checking the taxi fare | Often cheapest when demand is low |
| Arriving after 10 p.m. at IAH | Pre-booked car or taxi | The bus has stopped and late banks push app prices up |
| Family with young children | Pre-booked car | Child seats fitted before arrival |
| Four or more colleagues with bags | Pre-booked SUV or Sprinter | One vehicle, one invoice, everyone arrives together |
| A meeting within two hours of landing | Pre-booked car | Flight tracking, no curb queue, no app uncertainty |
| Rodeo, OTC or a convention week | Pre-booked car | The busiest weeks for curbs and app pricing |
The pattern is consistent. The fewer people, the lighter the bags and the quieter the hour, the better the taxi, the app and the bus look. As soon as you add children, colleagues, cases, a late landing or a fixed appointment, the value of knowing exactly who is meeting you rises quickly. Our wider comparisons of a chauffeur vs a taxi and a chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft cover the same trade-offs in other cities.
Five questions to answer before you land
A two-minute check before the flight usually settles the choice.
- What time do you land, really? Look at the arrival time and add the walk, the bags and, at IAH Terminal E, Customs. A 7:40 p.m. landing can be a 9 p.m. curb, after the METRO 500 has finished for the night.
- How many people and how many cases? A standard cab or app car is comfortable for two people with two cases. Beyond that you are choosing between two vehicles and one larger one.
- Is anyone under booster-seat age? Neither a taxi nor a standard app ride arrives with a fitted child seat.
- Is there a fixed appointment after landing? A meeting, a hospital appointment at the Medical Center, a check-in time at the cruise terminal or a game at NRG Stadium all make a known pickup worth more.
- Who is paying? If a company needs a receipt in advance, a fixed price and a monthly invoice, a pre-booked car through a corporate account is simpler than collecting curbside receipts.
If every answer points to "easy", take the taxi, the app or the bus. If two or more point the other way, book the car before you fly.
Hobby or IAH: which airport suits your trip
If you have a choice of flights, the airport you land at changes the cost of every option.
Hobby is closer for most visitors. It is about 17 miles (28 km) and roughly 30 minutes on a clear road from the Galleria, and it is the obvious airport for downtown, the Texas Medical Center, NRG Park, the Clear Lake side of the city and Galveston. The cruise terminals are about 42 miles (68 km) from Hobby against about 71 miles (115 km) from IAH; we set out that run in Houston to Galveston by Uber, taxi or chauffeur.
IAH is the international gateway. It handles most long-haul flights from Europe, Asia and Latin America, with arrivals processed in the Terminal E international hall. It is about 27 miles (44 km) and 41 minutes on a clear road from the Galleria, and it suits the northern suburbs. Long Customs queues are the main reason international travellers pre-book.
Late nights, early mornings and accessibility
Both airports staff their taxi stands, and IAH notes that airport personnel can help hail a cab 24/7 through the courtesy phones (dial 23-4198). The METRO 500 runs from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., so it does not help a late arrival. Night taxi zone fares are US$1.00 higher, and the late-night airport surcharge applies between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Houston's airports say their licensed taxi drivers complete training that includes assisting passengers with disabilities, and seniors receive a 10% taxi discount. A pre-booked car adds a different kind of help: a chauffeur who meets you inside, takes the bags from the carousel and walks at your pace to the vehicle. Tell the desk about mobility needs when you book, and choose a business SUV if extra room for a folding wheelchair helps; an Elly8.net car is a private car, not a medical vehicle.
Going to the airport
On departure, taxis and app rides drop off on the departures level at every terminal. For an early flight, a scheduled app ride or a pre-booked car removes the worry about availability at 4 a.m. A pre-booked chauffeur collects you at the hotel lobby or your front door at the time you set, and a round trip booked together is priced lower than two one-ways. For continuing journeys, the desk books city to city car service across Texas, with fixed airport prices waiting in Austin and San Antonio.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Hobby to downtown Houston?
Under the City of Houston's 2026 zone schedule, downtown is zone 2 from Hobby: US$35.28 in the daytime and US$36.28 at night. The airport adds a US$1.25 departure surcharge and US$1.00 for trips between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Tip is extra. Seniors receive a 10% discount.
How much is a taxi from IAH to downtown Houston?
Downtown is zone 2 from IAH under the City's 2026 schedule: US$71.22 by day and US$72.22 at night, plus a US$2.75 departure surcharge, US$1.00 late at night, and tip. The METRO 500 bus covers the same trip for US$4.50 between 5:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Do Houston airport taxis take credit cards?
The airports' pages do not state a payment rule, so ask the driver before you set off if you plan to pay by card. With a pre-booked Elly8.net car, the price is paid online when you reserve, so nothing changes hands at the curb, and companies can use a corporate account with monthly invoicing.
Where does a pre-booked chauffeur meet you at Hobby?
In baggage claim. The airport's own guidance is that pre-arranged drivers meet passengers there and that drivers must be badged. Your Elly8.net chauffeur holds a name board, tracks your flight and adjusts to the actual landing time, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing included.
Is it worth pre-booking a car for one person?
Often not, if you land at Hobby in the daytime with light bags: the zone fare or an app ride is cheaper. It becomes worth it for a late landing, a meeting soon after arrival, a long Customs queue at IAH, or when a company needs a fixed price and an invoice. Business sedans start at US$180 from Hobby.
Can a taxi take five passengers?
A standard cab seats fewer, so a group of five usually needs a larger app vehicle, two taxis or a pre-booked SUV. A business SUV seats up to six with six bags, from US$235 from Hobby and US$310 from IAH to the Galleria, fixed and all-in.
