A Hamilton taxi charges the City's meter: C$4.90 to start, then C$1.80 a kilometre, with waiting billed in 11-second steps and HST included. An HSR bus ride costs C$2.85 with an adult PRESTO card or C$3.75 in cash. Uber and Lyft show a demand-based price in the app. A pre-booked Elly8.net car is fixed per vehicle, from US$125 between Hamilton airport (YHM) and downtown and from US$110 an hour for a chauffeur on call.
For most short trips inside Hamilton, the taxi, the app or the bus is the sensible choice, and this guide says so plainly. A booked car is worth it for late airport runs, families who need child seats, groups who want one vehicle, event nights when everyone leaves at once, and trips to Toronto Pearson. Rides in Hamilton are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
How much is a taxi in Hamilton?
Hamilton's taxi meter starts at C$4.90 for the first 71.4 metres, then charges C$0.10 for every 55.6 metres, which the City describes as C$1.80 per kilometre, plus C$0.10 for each 11 seconds of waiting. By our arithmetic, a 10 km trip with no waiting costs about C$23, HST included, before a tip.
Those rates are in Appendix 1 of Schedule 25 of the City's Licensing By-law 07-170, in the office consolidation revised November 2023. The same appendix sets a few other numbers:
- Van on request: a non-accessible van adds C$10 per trip.
- Seniors: a 10% reduction on the meter rate.
- Livery or meter cabs by agreement: C$37 an hour.
- No discounting: promotional discount fares are prohibited without the written consent of the Director of Licensing.
Waiting adds up faster than people think. At C$0.10 per 11 seconds, ten minutes of stop-and-go traffic adds about C$5.45. On a quiet Sunday it hardly matters; at a downtown event letting out, it can.
| Trip (meter only, no waiting) | Our arithmetic from the City tariff |
|---|---|
| 3 km across downtown | about C$10 |
| 5 km | about C$14 |
| 10 km | about C$23 |
| 21 km, YHM to downtown | about C$43 |
All of these include HST under the by-law, and none includes a tip. The City licenses every taxicab and driver through its Licensing and By-law Services Division, and its taxi services page lists the taxi companies operating in Hamilton, including a wheelchair-accessible and para-transit service. The City is also reviewing taxi services, including fare regulation, through its Let's Talk Taxicabs engagement, so check for changes before relying on these numbers for a big budget.

How rideshare works in Hamilton
Rideshare companies are licensed too: the same by-law has a separate schedule, Schedule 24, for what it calls personal transportation providers. Prices are not published as a tariff. The app shows a fare before you confirm, and that fare rises with demand, which in Hamilton means Friday and Saturday nights, the hour after a game or concert downtown, snowy days and the weekday rush toward the QEW.
In a mid-sized city, the bigger variable is often the wait for a match rather than the price. Downtown at 8 p.m. a car is usually close by. In Ancaster, on the Mountain or out in Flamborough late at night, it can take longer, and the app cannot fit a child seat in advance. For families, Transport Canada's child car seat guidance explains which seat each age and weight needs.
Whichever you choose, check before you get in. With an app, match the plate, the car and the driver's name to what the app shows. With a taxi, the by-law requires the driver to carry and display a current tariff card, so the rates on the card should match the City's numbers above. With a booked Elly8.net car, the chauffeur's details follow before pickup, so you know who is coming.
HSR: the cheapest way around the city
According to the City's HSR fare table, a cash fare is C$3.75 and an adult single ride with PRESTO is C$2.85. Tapping a debit or credit card costs the same as cash. Children 6 to 12 ride free with a PRESTO card, fares are free after 11 paid trips under the PRESTO loyalty program, and a 72-hour adult e-ticket for visitors costs C$17.10.
For a student going to McMaster, a commuter heading downtown, or a visitor with a 72-hour e-ticket, the bus is the answer. Where it struggles is late at night, with luggage, with several stops, or with a group that wants to arrive together.
What a booked car costs in Hamilton
Every Elly8.net price is fixed and all-in per vehicle: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The full grid is in the Hamilton fares panel on the Hamilton car service page.
- YHM to downtown Hamilton: US$125 business sedan, US$165 business SUV, US$325 Executive Sprinter, the same in either direction.
- Toronto Pearson to downtown Hamilton: US$215 business sedan, US$280 business SUV, US$560 Executive Sprinter.
- By the hour: US$110 to US$220, with a 3-hour minimum. See hourly chauffeur service.
- Evening out and event night: US$550 to US$1,100, covering the drive, the wait and the ride home.
Capacity matters in any comparison: a business sedan seats three with two bags, a business SUV six with six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve with twelve bags, according to our fleet page.
The verdict by time and situation
| Situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday daytime, solo, light bag | HSR | C$2.85 with PRESTO is unbeatable |
| Short hop downtown, two people | Taxi or app | the meter stays low over a few kilometres |
| Friday night, Hess Village to the Mountain | Taxi or app, booked car for a group | apps rise with demand; four or more fit one SUV |
| Leaving a sold-out TD Coliseum show | Booked car for a group | everyone opens the app at once |
| First snowy morning, early flight | Booked car | fixed time, chauffeur picks the escarpment route |
| Late landing at YHM | Booked car or curb taxi | taxi is cheaper; booked car is waiting inside |
| Downtown Hamilton to Toronto Pearson | Booked car | fixed US$215 against a long metered trip |
| Family with a toddler | Booked car | child seat fitted before pickup |
A few of those deserve a sentence more.
Event nights. TD Coliseum at 101 York Boulevard, home of the Hamilton Hammers and the Toronto Rock, empties onto York Boulevard and Bay Street at once. For two people, walking a few blocks and hailing a cab works. For six, the evening out package in a business SUV, US$700, means one car waiting at an agreed staging point. See sports event transportation.
Late airport landings. A taxi from the YHM curb is about C$43 to downtown by our arithmetic, against US$125 for a booked sedan. For one traveller, the taxi is the better buy. For a family at 1 a.m. with car seats, the booked car is worth the difference. The full walkthrough is in our Hamilton airport limo guide.
Pearson. Downtown Hamilton to Pearson is about 60 km (37 mi), roughly 53 minutes on a clear road and much longer at weekday peaks on the 403 and QEW. On a meter, that distance and that traffic both cost money. A fixed US$215 sedan fare removes both, and the chauffeur meets you inside arrivals on the way back. For a US or international flight on a weekday, leave Hamilton at least three hours before departure. Our Toronto to Hamilton by private car guide covers the highway timing.
Waterfalls and conservation areas. The Hamilton Conservation Authority requires a reservation to visit Spencer Gorge, with Dundas Peak, Tew Falls and Webster Falls, during its busy season; for 2026, the reservation page says until November 8. Getting there by taxi is easy. The gorge sits outside the urban core, so plan the return before you go, or book an hourly car that waits while you hike.
Accessible travel and business travel
Accessibility. The City licenses accessible taxicabs, and its taxi services page lists a para-transit and wheelchair transportation service alongside the taxi companies. If you travel with a wheelchair or scooter, tell the Elly8.net desk your needs before you book; if none of the vehicle classes on the price list suits, the City's accessible taxi options are the right first call.
Business travel. A meter receipt shows what the trip cost after the fact; a booked car shows it before. For expense policies that need an approved amount in advance, the fixed fare is on the confirmation email. Companies with regular Hamilton travel, whether to the port lands, the hospital campuses or meetings in Burlington, can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing, traveller profiles and NDAs on request, and assistants can book on behalf of travellers. Multi-stop days work on the hourly rate or as a corporate roadshow day from US$990. See corporate car service.
Comparing fairly: currency, per vehicle and what is included
Currency. Hamilton's meter and HSR fares are in Canadian dollars; Elly8.net prices are in US dollars. Compare at your own card's rate.
Per vehicle. Elly8.net prices are for the whole vehicle. Dividing by passengers is arithmetic for comparison only: a US$165 business SUV from YHM shared by five is about US$33 each, but the booking is one price.
Inclusions. Hamilton's meter includes HST but not a tip. Our fares include taxes and the standard gratuity; tolls, parking and extra waiting are added at cost. The general case is set out in chauffeur vs taxi, chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and Uber Black vs chauffeur.
The same exercise for Mississauga, with its own meter, is in Mississauga taxi vs Uber vs private car.
