Toronto to Hamilton is about 67 km (42 mi) from downtown to downtown, roughly 53 minutes on a clear road, following the Gardiner Expressway and the Queen Elizabeth Way around the western end of Lake Ontario. From Toronto Pearson the drive to downtown Hamilton is about 60 km (37 mi), also around 53 minutes clear, and Elly8.net prices it at a fixed US$215 in a business sedan up to US$560 in an Executive Sprinter, the same in either direction.
A one-way from a downtown Toronto address is priced in the web booker before you pay. To keep the car for a day out with stops, hourly service starts at US$110 an hour with a 3-hour minimum, and a full-day chauffeur at US$810. Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs; rides in Hamilton are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk.
How long does it take to drive from Toronto to Hamilton?
On a clear road, downtown Toronto to downtown Hamilton takes about 53 minutes for roughly 67 km (42 mi). At weekday rush hours the QEW through Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington slows sharply, and the same drive can take well over an hour. Leaving outside the peaks saves the most time.
Those distances are routed road distances, measured the same way as our city fact sheets, from the centre of downtown Toronto to downtown Hamilton around King and James Streets. Where you start matters: a pickup in North York or Scarborough adds the drive across Toronto before you reach the Gardiner, and a pickup at Pearson joins the route further west.

The route, and the toll road alternative
The usual chauffeured route is the Gardiner Expressway west out of downtown, the Queen Elizabeth Way along the lakeshore through Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington, then Highway 403 into downtown Hamilton. It is direct and well signed, and because it carries so much of the region's traffic, it fills at peak.
The alternative is Highway 407 ETR, the electronic toll road north of the QEW, which the operator describes on 407etr.com. On a bad weekday afternoon it can save real time; on a Sunday morning it rarely does. Tolls are billed at cost on every Elly8.net booking, so tell us when you book whether you want the 407 used when it helps, or avoided.
When to leave
For this corridor, the desk plans around a simple rule of thumb:
- Weekday mornings: leave Toronto before about 6:30 a.m. or after about 9:30 a.m. if you can.
- Weekday afternoons: the westbound run out of Toronto and the eastbound return both slow from mid-afternoon into the evening; leave Toronto before 2:30 p.m. or after 7 p.m.
- Weekends: generally easier, except around big events, holiday weekends and summer Friday evenings.
- Winter: the first heavy snow of the season slows everything; add a buffer and let the chauffeur pick the route.
If you are heading to Hamilton for a fixed time, such as a 7 p.m. show at TD Coliseum or a wedding ceremony, build the plan backwards from the arrival time and add half an hour on a weekday.
Stops worth making on the way
Royal Botanical Gardens. Between Burlington and Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens describes itself as the largest botanical garden in Canada, with cultivated gardens, nature sanctuaries and trails. It is the natural first stop coming from Toronto, on the way in before you reach downtown Hamilton.
Waterfalls and the escarpment. Hamilton's escarpment is the draw for many visitors. The Hamilton Conservation Authority requires a reservation to visit Spencer Gorge, which includes Dundas Peak, Tew Falls and Webster Falls, during its busy season; for 2026 its reservation page says reservations are required until November 8. Book that first, then the car.
Downtown Hamilton. James Street North for galleries and lunch, Hess Village for dinner, and Bayfront Park on the harbour for a walk. On event nights, TD Coliseum at 101 York Boulevard draws crowds for the Hamilton Hammers, the Toronto Rock and touring concerts.
Going further. Niagara wine country starts just east of Hamilton along the escarpment, and the Fallsview hotel district is roughly another hour on a clear road. Our Niagara Falls car service page has the wine-country day and Fallsview transfers.
Private car vs GO train vs driving yourself
GO Transit's Lakeshore West line connects Union Station with Hamilton, and the city has two GO stations downtown: West Harbour GO at 353 James Street North and the Hamilton GO Centre at 36 Hunter Street East. Fares vary by trip and are best checked in GO's fare calculator, but two promotions make the train very cheap for leisure travel:
- Weekends and statutory holidays: GO sells a C$10 one-day weekend pass, online only, for unlimited travel on any GO train or bus that day.
- Weekdays, in a group: weekday group passes cost C$30 for two people, C$40 for three, C$50 for four and C$60 for five, for unlimited all-day travel together.
Children 12 and under ride free on GO, according to GO's kids ride free page.
| Option | Cost | Door to door | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GO train, weekend pass | C$10 per person per day | train time plus getting to and from stations | one or two people, light bags |
| GO train, weekday group pass | C$30 to C$60 for 2 to 5 people | same | small groups with a flexible schedule |
| Driving yourself | fuel, possible 407 tolls, Hamilton parking | about 53 min clear road | travellers who want the car there |
| Rideshare | shown in the app, varies with demand | same roads, plus the match | one-way, flexible timing |
| Elly8.net, Pearson to downtown Hamilton | from US$215 per vehicle, fixed | about 53 min clear road | arrivals, luggage, fixed budget |
| Elly8.net, hourly or full day | from US$110 an hour, or US$810 a day | your schedule | day trips with several stops |
The fair verdict: for one or two people on a weekend going downtown to downtown, the C$10 GO pass is outstanding value and the train avoids the QEW entirely. For a small group on a weekday with a flexible plan, the group pass is hard to beat. A private car wins when you are starting at the airport or a home far from Union, carrying luggage or a child seat, visiting places the train does not reach, such as Royal Botanical Gardens or Spencer Gorge, or working to a fixed time. What it costs by private car
Every Elly8.net price is per vehicle and all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and the standard gratuity, plus airport meet and greet on airport runs. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Every fixed fare is in the Hamilton fares panel on our Hamilton car service page.
- Pearson to downtown Hamilton, one way: US$215 business sedan, US$280 business SUV, US$345 first class SUV, US$380 first class sedan, US$560 Executive Sprinter.
- Pearson round trip: from US$410 in a business sedan to US$1,065 in an Executive Sprinter.
- By the hour: US$110 business sedan, US$140 business SUV, US$165 first class SUV, US$180 first class sedan, US$220 Executive Sprinter, 3-hour minimum.
- Full-day chauffeur: from US$810 in a business sedan to US$1,620 in an Executive Sprinter.
A one-way from a downtown Toronto hotel or office to Hamilton is priced in the web booker, as is any address not on the list. For a one-way between the two cities with luggage, see city to city car service; for arrivals at Union Station by VIA or GO, see train station transfers.
Dividing a vehicle fare by passengers is arithmetic for comparison only: a US$560 Executive Sprinter from Pearson shared by ten wedding guests is US$56 each, but the booking is one price for one vehicle.
A Toronto to Hamilton day, planned
Here is a relaxed day for a family or a small group, in a business SUV on a full-day booking from US$1,035:
- 9:30 a.m. Pickup at a downtown Toronto hotel; the QEW is past its morning peak.
- 10:30 a.m. Royal Botanical Gardens, two hours in the gardens.
- 12:45 p.m. Lunch on James Street North.
- 2:15 p.m. An escarpment lookout or, with a reservation, Spencer Gorge.
- 4:30 p.m. Bayfront Park on the harbour.
- 6:00 p.m. Dinner in Hess Village or start back; with an early dinner, you are in Toronto around 8 p.m.
The full-day booking keeps one vehicle and chauffeur with you throughout, so there is no hunting for parking at each stop; if the day runs beyond the hours included, the extra time is billed at cost. A shorter afternoon works on the hourly rate. For more ideas, see private city tours and our Hamilton limo rental guide.
Business trips along the corridor

Is the GO train cheaper than a car to Hamilton?
For one or two people, yes. GO sells a C$10 one-day weekend pass and weekday group passes from C$30 for two people, and children 12 and under ride free. A car makes more sense with luggage, from the airport, for stops the train does not reach, or for a fixed arrival time.

Outside the weekday peaks: before about 6:30 a.m. or after about 9:30 a.m. in the morning, and before 2:30 p.m. or after 7 p.m. in the afternoon. Weekends are usually easier, except around holidays, summer Friday evenings and big events. In the first heavy snow of winter, add a buffer whatever the hour.
Can we make stops between Toronto and Hamilton?
Yes. Book hourly, from US$110 an hour with a 3-hour minimum, or a full-day chauffeur from US$810, and the car waits at each stop. Royal Botanical Gardens, between Burlington and Hamilton, is a popular first stop on the way in from Toronto.
Do you use the 407 toll road?
Only if you want it. Highway 407 ETR can save time on a busy weekday, and tolls are billed at cost on every booking. Tell us when you book whether to use it when it helps or avoid it altogether.
