The airport shuttles are the budget way into Istanbul, and they are good at what they do. From Istanbul Airport (IST), Havaist runs 11 routes into the city, including one to Taksim; from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), Havabus runs half-hourly buses to Taksim and Kadıköy and Havaist also serves the airport. A private Elly8.net car costs more, from US$170 per vehicle from IST to Taksim and Nişantaşı and from US$175 from SAW, but it goes door to door, waits for your flight and carries a family's luggage without anyone dragging a suitcase across a square.
Rides in Istanbul are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Both of Istanbul's airports are more than 40 km from the centre and the city's traffic is heavy, so the choice between shuttle and car is a bigger decision here than in most European capitals. This post compares them on the three things that matter: cost, wait time and comfort.
Is the shuttle or a private car better from Istanbul's airports?
The shuttle is better for solo travellers and couples with light bags whose hotels are near a shuttle stop, especially in daytime. A private car is better for families, groups of four or more, travellers with heavy luggage or child seats, late-night arrivals, and anyone staying away from the shuttle routes, such as the old city or the Bosphorus shore.
The shuttle saves money; the car saves effort. Istanbul magnifies both. The shuttles share the same congested motorways as every car, so they are not faster, and the final stop is rarely your hotel. The car costs several times more for one person, but the gap narrows quickly as the party grows, because Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, never per person.

How the shuttles work at Istanbul Airport (IST)
According to Istanbul Airport, Havaist offers 11 different routes between the airport and the city centre. You board on the transportation floor, level -2, below the terminal, and the timetable for each route is published on the airport's page. The Taksim route is a good example of how the network works: the airport describes buses leaving Taksim and reaching Beşiktaş Square in about 15 minutes, then continuing via the Zincirlikuyu Metrobus stop and 4. Levent towards the airport, while another Taksim service stops at Piyalepaşa and Nurtepe Viyadük before running express.
Two other public options leave from the same level: İETT city buses, which the airport says are wheelchair accessible, and the M11 metro, which has run between Kağıthane and Istanbul Airport since January 2023, with a connection at Gayrettepe added in January 2024. The metro avoids road traffic entirely, but it brings you to a transfer point rather than a hotel door, and you change lines with your luggage.
Havaist's own site notes that its vehicles have no reservation system, so you cannot book a seat for a specific time. You turn up, buy a ticket and take the next departure on your route.
How the shuttles work at Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)
Sabiha Gökçen is in Pendik and Kurtköy on the Asian side; the airport gives the distances as 40 km to Kadıköy, 12 km to downtown Pendik and 50 km to Taksim, and lists public buses, Havabus and Havaist shuttles and metro lines among the ways in.
Havabus publishes its timetables: buses from Sabiha Gökçen to Taksim run every 30 minutes from 06:30 until 01:30, with extra services between 01:00 and 04:00 for delayed flights, and in the other direction from Taksim every 30 minutes from 03:00 to 22:00. Havabus also runs between the airport and Kadıköy, Yenisahra and Sakarya. For a hotel near Taksim Square, that is a frequent, simple service. For a hotel anywhere else, it is the first of two legs.

Cost
For one traveller there is no contest: a shuttle ticket costs far less than a private car. For a family of four, the shuttle means four tickets plus a taxi from the stop to the hotel in most cases; the car is one fixed price. For six people, a Business SUV from IST to Taksim and Nişantaşı costs US$225 per vehicle, which as arithmetic for comparison only is US$37.50 a head; ten people in an Executive Sprinter at US$445 is US$44.50 a head. The car is still dearer than the shuttle, but no longer by a large multiple, and it ends at the door.
Wait time
The shuttle's waiting is predictable but real: the gap until the next departure on your route, plus queueing to board with luggage at busy times. On the Havabus Taksim route that gap is at most half an hour. The car has no departure to wait for: give us the flight number, the chauffeur tracks the landing, waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing covers a long passport queue or a slow bag.
Comfort
Comfort in Istanbul mostly means the last mile. The motorway leg is similar in a shuttle and a car; the difference is the stop. Taksim Square with a suitcase at 1:00 a.m., or the walk from a Metrobus stop to a hotel in Sultanahmet, is where the shuttle loses. Sultanahmet is about 47 km (29 mi) from Istanbul Airport by road and is quoted at a fixed price through the web booker; the chauffeur stops as close to your hotel as cars are allowed in the old city.
Five travellers, five verdicts
- Solo traveller, carry-on, hotel near Taksim, daytime landing. Take Havaist or Havabus. It is the right tool.
- Couple with two suitcases, hotel in Sultanahmet. The shuttle plus a taxi works; the private car from IST is simpler. A close call, decided by budget.
- Family of five with a stroller and child seats. Book the car. A Business SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, and seats are fitted before pickup.
- Group of ten for a wedding or incentive trip. Book an Executive Sprinter, which takes up to 12 passengers and 12 bags; one vehicle, one fixed price, everyone arrives together. See group transportation.
- Late arrival at either airport. Havabus adds services for delayed flights at SAW, but the stop at the other end is the same, and at night the last mile is the hardest part. A car that waits for you is the calmer plan.

Accessibility: what the shuttles offer and where a car helps
Istanbul Airport says wheelchair users can use Havaist's accessible midibuses, but they should notify the operator in advance to avoid long waits: at least 1 hour ahead at the Havaist counters on the transportation floor for trips into the city, and at least 6 hours ahead through Havaist's contact channels for trips to the airport. İETT buses at the airport are wheelchair accessible. That is a genuinely useful service, and it is worth knowing about.
A private car solves a different part of the problem. The chauffeur meets the traveller and any airport assistance staff inside the arrivals hall, loads a folding wheelchair or walker with the luggage, and drives to the hotel entrance rather than a bus stop. Tell us about mobility needs when you book, and we choose the vehicle accordingly; a Business SUV or Executive Sprinter gives the most room.
Which airport, which hotel: distances that change the answer
Where you land and where you sleep can matter more than shuttle or car. By our routed estimates on a clear road, using the public OSRM service: Sabiha Gökçen to Kadıköy is about 33 km (20 mi), roughly 35 minutes, while Istanbul Airport to Kadıköy is about 54 km (34 mi), roughly 1 hour 5 minutes, with a Bosphorus crossing. Sabiha Gökçen to Sultanahmet is about 41 km (26 mi), roughly 45 minutes. Moving between the two airports, about 89 km (55 mi) and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes on a clear road, is a long cross-city trip that no shuttle covers directly.
If your hotel is on the Asian side, a SAW arrival with Havabus to Kadıköy is a strong budget option. If you land at IST and stay on the Asian side, the drive is long and the crossing unpredictable; that is where a fixed price agreed in advance takes the guesswork out.
The departure run: when the shuttle is riskier
On the way out the trade-off shifts. Istanbul's traffic makes airport timing unpredictable, and a shuttle adds the time to reach the stop and the wait for the next departure. Elly8.net fares are the same in either direction, so Taksim and Nişantaşı to IST costs from US$170 in a business sedan to US$445 in an Executive Sprinter, and to SAW from US$175 to US$455. The desk sets the pickup time from your hotel with extra margin for the crossings and rush hour, and the Eurasia Tunnel and the bridges are chosen on the day from live traffic. Tolls are billed at cost on top of the fixed fare.

A middle path: shuttle in, car out
Some travellers split the difference. They take the shuttle on arrival, when they are travelling light and the timing is flexible, and book a private car for the departure, when the timing matters and the traffic is the risk. Others do the reverse after a long-haul flight with children: the car on arrival, when everyone is tired, and the shuttle or metro on the way out. Both are sensible. The fixed Elly8.net fare is the same in either direction, so you can book only the leg where the car adds most. Tell the desk which leg you are booking and why, and we will set the timing accordingly, with a wider margin for departures at rush hour and on Friday evenings.

Frequently asked questions
How does the Havaist shuttle from Istanbul Airport work?
Havaist runs 11 routes between Istanbul Airport and the city, boarding on the transportation floor, level -2. There is no seat reservation: you buy a ticket and take the next departure on your route. Timetables are on the Istanbul Airport website.
How often does the Havabus run from Sabiha Gökçen to Taksim?
Every 30 minutes from 06:30 until 01:30, according to the Havabus timetable, with extra services between 01:00 and 04:00 for delayed flights. From Taksim to the airport, buses run every 30 minutes from 03:00 to 22:00.
How much is a private car from Istanbul Airport to Taksim?
A fixed Elly8.net transfer from IST to Taksim and Nişantaşı costs from US$170 in a business sedan, US$225 in a business SUV and US$445 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, including chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls are billed at cost.
Is the shuttle faster than a private car?
No. Shuttles use the same motorways and add stops. The M11 metro avoids road traffic but requires a change for most central hotels. A private car is not faster on the road either; its advantage is no waiting for a departure and a drop at your hotel door.
Can I get child seats on an airport transfer in Istanbul?
Yes, on an Elly8.net private car. Request child or booster seats when you book, with the children's ages, and the partner fits them before pickup. Shuttle buses do not provide child seats.
What if my flight lands very late?
The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits after the actual landing; complimentary waiting after a tracked landing covers passport control and baggage. If the flight is cancelled or rerouted, contact the 24/7 desk and the pickup is moved.
