Uber in Athens works differently from Uber at home. According to the City of Athens visitor guide, Uber operates in the city through its UberTaxi product: you request a ride in the app and a licensed yellow taxi comes to collect you. So the question is not really Uber against a taxi, because the app is one more way of booking the same cab. The real choice is between a yellow taxi, however you call it, the metro and express buses, and a pre-booked private car.
Each wins somewhere. From the airport to Syntagma, the yellow taxi charges a flat €40 by day and the metro ticket is €9, both fair prices for one or two travellers. A pre-booked Elly8.net car costs from US$150 per vehicle in a business sedan to US$390 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed in dollars, and it earns that fare with families, real luggage, late arrivals, the port at Piraeus and days out along the coast. This guide goes trip by trip.
Is Uber available in Athens?
Yes, but as UberTaxi: the City of Athens guide explains that requesting an Uber in Athens sends a yellow taxi. The airport taxi to the centre is a flat €40 from 5am to midnight and €55 overnight. A pre-booked Elly8.net car from Athens airport to Syntagma costs from US$150 per vehicle.
The city's taxi guide lists the app options alongside each other. Uber is available with the UberTaxi product, another app-based service books yellow taxis with cash, card or PayPal payment, and the radio taxi companies take bookings by phone or online for a set time and date. All licensed taxis have meters charging by distance and time, and all are required to accept credit and debit cards, shown by a sticker on the rear right window, although the guide suggests checking with the driver before you set off.
Uber's own Athens page adds that rides can be requested at any time or reserved up to 30 days ahead. That makes the app a convenient way to summon a cab, especially if you would rather not explain an address in Greek. What it does not change is the vehicle class: you get a taxi.
Rides in Athens with Elly8.net are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
The airport: taxi, app, metro, bus or chauffeur
Athens International Airport is about 34 km (21 mi) from Syntagma Square, roughly 34 minutes on a clear road. The city's airport transport guide sets out the public options and the taxi fare in detail.
| Option | Price | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow taxi from the rank outside Exit 3 | €40 flat 5am to midnight, €55 midnight to 5am | Road time, 30 to 45 min per the city guide | Two travellers, spontaneous trips |
| UberTaxi in the app | A yellow taxi, booked in the app | Same as a taxi | Travellers who prefer an app |
| Metro Line 3 to Syntagma | €9 single, €16 return | Rail, no road traffic | One traveller, light bag, central hotel |
| X95 express bus to Syntagma | €5.50 single | About 60 min, per the city guide | Lowest cost, light bags |
| Elly8.net business sedan to Syntagma | US$150 fixed, per vehicle | About 34 min on a clear road | Families, executives, heavy luggage |
| Elly8.net Business SUV to Syntagma | US$195 fixed, per vehicle | Same | Six passengers and six bags |
The metro and bus fares come from the OASA fare table, which also lists a three-day tourist ticket at €20 that includes one round trip to the airport. The city guide notes that the flat taxi fare is set by the time you arrive at your destination and includes all surcharges.
One detail matters for late arrivals. The city guide warns that, during upgrade works on Metro Line 3, five stations between Panormou and Nomismatokopio close at 9:40pm from Sunday to Thursday, airport trains run only as far as Agia Paraskevi after that time, and a replacement bus, the X20, links the two sections. If you land in the evening, that adds a change and a bus ride with your bags.
The verdict. For one person with a carry-on landing in daylight near a Line 3 station, the metro is excellent value. For two people, the €40 flat taxi is fair. For a family, a party that would need two taxis, a long-haul night or an evening arrival during the metro works, a pre-booked car with the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals is the calmer plan. Our Athens taxi guide covers the rank, the flat fare rules and the meter in more depth.
Around the centre: the app and the taxi win
For short rides between Syntagma, Kolonaki, Plaka and the Acropolis area, a yellow taxi, hailed or called through the app, is the practical choice. By our routing, Syntagma to Kolonaki is under 2 km and a few minutes by car. Plaka's lanes are largely pedestrian, and cars cannot drive along the promenade below the Acropolis, so any vehicle drops you at the edge.
We would not sell you a chauffeur for a ten-minute dinner hop. Where an hourly car helps is a full day of meetings, when you want the same driver waiting outside each office rather than finding a cab four or five times. Athens car service by the hour costs US$85 in a business sedan, US$110 in a business SUV and US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum.
Piraeus: cruise days and ferry mornings
Piraeus is about 11 km (7 mi) from Syntagma and about 49 km (30 mi) from the airport by our routing, roughly 13 and 46 minutes on a clear road. The city's Piraeus port guide puts a taxi from the port to the centre at about €25 and notes that taxis line the port, though in high season you may have to wait in line. Metro Line 3 runs from Piraeus to Syntagma in about 20 minutes and continues to the airport.
The app helps here: a reserved UberTaxi or a radio taxi can be waiting rather than queuing. What neither guarantees is a vehicle big enough for a cruise family's luggage, or a driver who knows which of the long quays your ferry leaves from. There is no fixed list fare for Piraeus with Elly8.net; enter the ship or ferry in the web booker for an instant fixed price, and see cruise port transfers.
The Athens Riviera and Cape Sounion
Hotels on the Riviera are where taxis and apps become less convenient. By our routing, Vouliagmeni is about 20 km (13 mi) and 26 minutes from Syntagma and about 26 km (16 mi) and 36 minutes from the airport, and Glyfada about 14 km (9 mi) from the centre. The published flat fare is for the city centre, so agree how the fare to the coast will be charged before you set off.
For a day out, Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon, which Visit Greece describes as synonymous with sunsets, is about 67 km (42 mi) and 75 minutes from Syntagma by our routing. The return after sunset is the part to arrange in advance. Our five-hour Cape Sounion package costs from US$395 in a business sedan, US$510 in a business SUV and US$785 in an Executive Sprinter, with the car waiting at the temple. See the Athens chauffeur page for the full list of day trips.
Late nights and early flights
Two times of day decide many travellers' plans. Overnight, the taxi flat fare rises to €55 between midnight and 5am, and the city guide warns of reduced Line 3 evening service from Sunday to Thursday during upgrade works. Early in the morning, before a flight to Mykonos or Santorini, you want a car at the hotel door at a fixed minute rather than an app request at 4:30am. A pre-booked car is fixed in price whatever the hour and confirmed by email in advance.
Groups, families and luggage
Our fleet table is specific about capacity. A Business Sedan or First Class Sedan takes three passengers and two bags; a Business SUV or First Class SUV six passengers and six bags; an Executive Sprinter twelve passengers and twelve bags. A family of five with luggage fits one Business SUV at US$195 from the airport, per vehicle, rather than two taxis. Ask for child or booster seats when you book and give the children's ages. See the fleet and group transportation.
Paying and tipping, for North American visitors
The City of Athens guide says every licensed taxi must accept credit and debit cards, and it notes that at least one taxi app takes cash, card or PayPal, so you rarely need cash for a cab. Still, it is worth checking with the driver before you set off, as the guide suggests, and carrying a few euros for small fares. Elly8.net fares are paid by card in US dollars when you reserve and already include standard gratuity, so nothing more is expected at the end of the ride; anything extra is your choice. For expense reports, the booking confirmation and receipt arrive by email.
Continuing your trip
Athens is often one stop on a longer European itinerary, and the same desk books the cars at the next one. Island hoppers go on to Mykonos or Santorini by ferry or a short flight. Many travellers combine Greece with the Riviera; our guides to the Nice airport to Cannes transfer and the Monaco taxi and private car comparison cover the arrival there. Elly8.net books the car only; BookingWorldwide.net handles flights and hotels.
Which should you book? A quick guide
Book the metro or the X95 if you are one traveller with a light bag, staying near Syntagma, landing in daylight.
Take a yellow taxi, by rank or app, for two travellers from the airport, short hops in the centre, and the trip back from Piraeus outside the busiest summer mornings.
Pre-book a chauffeur for a long-haul arrival with luggage, a family or group, a late evening arrival, an early ferry or flight, a cruise embarkation, a Riviera hotel, a day at Cape Sounion or Delphi, or a day of meetings. See Athens airport transfers and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
What a booking with Elly8.net includes

During the Athens Marathon on 8 November 2026, with shorter races on 7 November per the race organisers, roads on the route close; the desk times airport runs around the closures.

Is the metro a good way from Athens airport?
For one traveller with a light bag, yes. The metro airport ticket costs €9 one way and Line 3 runs direct to Syntagma. The city guide warns that during upgrade works, airport trains from Sunday to Thursday run only as far as Agia Paraskevi after 9:40pm, with a replacement bus beyond.

Can we get back from Cape Sounion after sunset?
