An Anchorage taxi runs on the meter, and taxis, limousines and other vehicles for hire are regulated by the Municipality of Anchorage. Rideshare apps such as Uber and Lyft show a price before you accept, and that price moves with demand. The People Mover city bus is the cheapest option by far at US$2.00 a ride. A pre-booked Elly8.net car is the most expensive on a short trip, from US$130 between the airport and downtown, but it is the only one with a fixed, all-in price agreed before you travel.
Which is right depends on the trip, the hour and the weather more than the price list. Anchorage is a spread-out city with long winter nights, a busy summer season and an airport with two terminals and separate pickup zones for every kind of ride. This guide sets out what each option really involves and where we would point a friend.
Is a taxi or rideshare better in Anchorage?
For a short daytime trip with light luggage, a taxi or rideshare is cheaper than a pre-booked car, and the People Mover bus cheaper still. Book a chauffeur for late-night arrivals, winter nights out, families needing child seats, groups with gear, long drives such as Girdwood, and any trip that needs a fixed price.
Both taxis and rideshare work well in Anchorage for most ordinary trips. The difference shows at the edges: very late at night, in deep cold when waiting outside is unpleasant, on event nights when everyone wants a ride at once, and on trips out of town where a meter keeps running for a long time.

How Anchorage taxi fares work
Anchorage taxis use a meter. The Municipality of Anchorage's Transportation Inspection office regulates taxicabs, limousines and vehicles for hire, licenses chauffeurs and points to the municipal code for the rules. The office does not publish a simple fare card on that page, so we will not quote a per-mile rate here; ask the driver for an estimate before you set off, and expect the total to depend on distance and time.
What that means in practice: on a short hop downtown, the meter is usually the cheapest door-to-door option. On a long trip, such as downtown to Girdwood, about 38 miles (62 km) on our routed estimate, the meter keeps running for close to an hour on a clear road and longer in snow, and you also need a ride back.
At the airport, the state says taxis are available 24/7 at designated zones. On the airport's taxi and rideshare page, the South Terminal taxi queue is on Level 1 just outside baggage claim, across from Door 3, and the North Terminal queue is across from Door 2.
How rideshare works in Anchorage
Uber and Lyft both operate in Anchorage, and the airport lists pickup locations at both terminals. At the South Terminal, all rideshare pickups are on Level 2 at ticketing, Doors 1 or 8; at the North Terminal, they are at ground level, Door 2, on the inner lane.
Rideshare prices are not published in advance; the app quotes a fare when you request, and it can rise when demand is high, such as when several flights land together, a game or concert lets out, or the weather turns. Match times vary with the number of drivers online, which in a city of Anchorage's size can be fewer late at night. Our general comparison is in chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft, and the premium-app question is covered in Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur.
The People Mover bus
The cheapest way between the airport and downtown is People Mover Route 40, which runs along Spenard Road. According to the airport's public transportation page, buses run about every 15 minutes in weekday peak hours and about every 30 minutes on evenings and weekends. A single ride is US$2.00 and a day pass US$5.00, with exact cash required because drivers do not make change; the People Mover mTicket app accepts cards. Route 65 links the airport with Jewel Lake, Spenard and downtown.
The stop is on the lower level outside baggage claim at the South Terminal. North Terminal passengers take the free airport shuttle to the South Terminal first. For the city network beyond the airport, see the Municipality's People Mover page.
Wait times: what to expect
No one publishes average waits, so treat these as planning guidance rather than promises.
- Taxi at the airport. Taxis queue at both terminals around the clock, so a wait is usually short, but a bank of arrivals can create a line.
- Rideshare at the airport. You request after you have your bags, walk to the pickup door and wait for the match and the drive in. Late at night, that can take longer.
- Bus. Up to 15 minutes at weekday peaks, up to 30 in the evening and at weekends, plus a longer ride with stops.
- Pre-booked car. The chauffeur is inside arrivals before you reach baggage claim, because the flight is tracked. You get complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, so a delay does not cost you a second booking.
Downtown, a taxi or rideshare from a hotel is usually quick in the daytime. After a big event, everyone requests at once. In January, a ten-minute wait outside is a different experience from a ten-minute wait in July.
Side by side, trip by trip
Elly8.net prices below are fixed, per vehicle and include the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity.
| Trip | Taxi | Rideshare | Bus | Elly8.net | Our honest pick |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solo, carry-on, ANC to downtown, afternoon | Metered | App price | US$2.00 | US$130 sedan | The bus or a taxi |
| Couple, two suitcases, ANC to downtown, 1 a.m. | Metered, 24/7 queue | App price, fewer drivers late | Limited | US$130 sedan, waiting inside | Taxi or pre-booked; the car if you want certainty |
| Family of five, car seats, winter arrival | Metered; seats not supplied | Seats not guaranteed | Impractical | US$170 business SUV, seats on request | Pre-booked SUV |
| Downtown dinner and home, two people | Metered, two trips | App price, two trips | Possible | from US$100 an hour, 3-hour minimum | Taxi or rideshare |
| Group of eight to a concert and home | Two cabs each way | Two cars each way | Impractical | US$1,000 Sprinter, 5-hour evening | Pre-booked Sprinter |
| Downtown to Girdwood and back for dinner | Long meter each way | Uncertain return | No | US$1,475 Sprinter or US$740 sedan, 8-hour day | Pre-booked |
| Meetings across town all day | Several metered trips | Several trips | Slow | US$900 sedan, 10-hour roadshow day | Pre-booked for a full schedule |
We say it plainly: for the first and fourth rows, you should not book us. The bus, a taxi or rideshare will do the job for less. The pre-booked car makes sense lower down the table, where the alternatives become several separate trips, an uncertain return or a wait outside in the cold.
When to book a car instead
The late arrival. Many flights from the Lower 48 land late in the evening or after midnight. With a pre-booked car, the driver is assigned before you fly, the flight is tracked and the meet is inside the terminal. Our Anchorage airport car service guide walks through the arrival step by step.
Winter nights. A warm vehicle waiting outside the restaurant or the venue, rather than a wait on the pavement, is the main reason locals and visitors book the evening package in winter. The five-hour evening out and event night package runs from US$500 in a business sedan and US$625 in a business SUV.
Out of town. Girdwood, Whittier and Seward are long drives. A taxi meter on a long drive, plus finding a ride back, makes the fixed day package the more predictable option. The eight-hour Seward Highway and Girdwood day is US$740 in a business sedan.
Groups and gear. A group that would need two or three cabs, or travellers with rods, skis and coolers, fit better in one Executive Sprinter with room for 12 bags. Our Anchorage Sprinter guide compares one Sprinter with two SUVs.
Business travel. A day of meetings is easier with one chauffeur waiting at each stop than with a new ride each time, and a corporate account puts it on one monthly invoice. See corporate car service.
Events. Fur Rondy and the start of the Iditarod bring crowds and street closures downtown in late winter. On those nights, every taxi and rideshare request lands at once. A pre-booked car with an agreed pickup point a short walk from the crowds avoids that. See event transportation.
A note on fairness and on price
A fixed fare is not the same as a cheap fare. On the 6-mile (10 km) airport run, a taxi or rideshare will usually cost less than our US$130 business sedan, and the bus a small fraction of it. What the fixed fare buys is certainty: no meter, no surge, no tip to work out, a vehicle class you choose, child seats on request and a confirmation by email before you travel. For a traveller who values that, it is good value; for one who does not, the alternatives are good and we are happy to say so. The general case is set out in chauffeur vs taxi.
Comparing cities? In Boise, the airport is only 4 miles from downtown and the bus does not run on Sundays, which changes the answer; see our Boise taxi or rideshare guide.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi in Anchorage?
Anchorage taxis are metered and regulated by the Municipality of Anchorage, which does not publish a simple fare card on its transportation inspection page. Ask the driver for an estimate before you set off. For comparison, a fixed Elly8.net business sedan between the airport and downtown is US$130 all-in.
Is there Uber or Lyft in Anchorage?
Yes. The airport lists rideshare pickups for both terminals: Level 2 at ticketing, Doors 1 or 8, at the South Terminal, and ground level, Door 2, inner lane, at the North Terminal. Prices are shown in the app and vary with demand and time of day.
What is the cheapest way from Anchorage airport to downtown?
People Mover Route 40, at US$2.00 a ride or US$5.00 for a day pass, exact cash or the mTicket app. It runs about every 15 minutes at weekday peaks and every 30 minutes on evenings and weekends, from the lower level outside South Terminal baggage claim.
Are taxis available at Anchorage airport at night?
The airport says taxis are available 24/7 at designated zones outside both terminals. Rideshare can take longer late at night when fewer drivers are online. If you land after midnight and want certainty, a pre-booked car with flight tracking waits for you inside arrivals.
Should we take a taxi to Girdwood?
It is possible, but Girdwood is about 38 miles (62 km) from downtown on our routed estimate, so the meter runs for close to an hour each way and you need a return ride. A fixed eight-hour Seward Highway and Girdwood day starts at US$740 in a business sedan with the car waiting.
When is a pre-booked car worth it in Anchorage?
For late-night and winter arrivals, families needing child seats, groups with gear, long drives out of town, event nights and full days of meetings. For a solo daytime trip with light luggage, a taxi, rideshare or the bus is better value, and we recommend them.
