A Boise taxi runs on the meter, and on most trips around a compact city it is a quick, reasonable way to get from A to B. Uber and Lyft both operate, showing a price in the app before you accept, and that price moves with demand. The ValleyRide bus is the bargain at US$1.50 a ride, Monday to Saturday. A pre-booked Elly8.net car costs more on short trips, from US$115 between Boise Airport (BOI) and downtown, but its price is fixed and all-in before you travel.
The interesting question in Boise is not which option is cheapest, because the answer is obvious. It is when the cheap options stop working: Sundays, when the airport buses do not run; late at night; game days, when everyone leaves the stadium at once; and trips out of town, where the meter runs a long time. This guide sets out each option fairly and says where we would point a friend.
Is a taxi or rideshare better in Boise?
For short daytime trips around Boise, a taxi or rideshare is usually cheaper and quick, and the ValleyRide bus costs US$1.50 on weekdays and Saturdays. Book a pre-booked car for Sunday or late-night airport runs, families needing child seats, groups, game nights, trips to Sun Valley or wine country, and business days needing a fixed price.
Both taxis and rideshare serve Boise well for ordinary trips. The differences show at the edges of the week and the edges of the city.
How each option works
Taxi. Boise taxis are metered, so the fare depends on distance and time. At the airport, taxis wait at the black curb on the lower level across the median, according to Boise Airport's ground transportation page. In town, hotels can call one. Ask the driver for an estimate before a longer trip.
Rideshare. Lyft and Uber pick up at the airport on the upper curb at the east end, reached through the second-floor rotunda exit and marked by "Rideshare Pick-Up Area" shelters. The airport asks riders to request only after collecting luggage or reaching the pickup area, says rides can be requested only through the apps and that drivers may not solicit riders, and reminds riders to check the plate, make, model and driver name before getting in. Prices are not published in advance and change with demand.
Bus. Valley Regional Transit runs three routes to the airport: 2 Broadway, 3 Vista and 20 Orchard. Service runs Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday service listed. Route 3 runs every 15 minutes at weekday peaks and every 30 minutes at other times; Routes 2 and 20 run every 30 to 60 minutes. The standard adult fare is US$1.50 a ride, or US$2.50 for an all-day pass.
Hotel shuttles. Some hotels run courtesy shuttles from the green curb at the airport. Check with your hotel before you travel.
Pre-booked chauffeur. A fixed, all-in fare per vehicle, booked in advance, with flight tracking on airport pickups and a meet inside baggage claim. The fare includes chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity.
Wait times and the gaps in the week
No one publishes average waits for Boise taxis or rideshare, so treat these as planning guidance.
- Weekday daytime. Taxis and rideshare are usually available quickly, and the airport buses run frequently at peaks. This is when the cheap options are at their best.
- Sundays. The airport bus routes list no Sunday service, so Sunday arrivals rely on taxis, rideshare, hotel shuttles or a pre-booked car.
- Late evening. The bus timetables end in the evening; the weekday schedules listed for Routes 2 and 20 run to about 9:20 to 9:50 p.m. After that, taxis and rideshare carry the load, and match times can lengthen when fewer drivers are online.
- Game and event nights. When a game at Albertsons Stadium or ExtraMile Arena, or a concert at Idaho Central Arena, lets out, thousands of people want a ride at the same moment. Rideshare prices rise with demand and taxis are busy. This is where a pre-booked car with an agreed pickup point a few blocks away saves the most time.
- Festival weekends. Treefort Music Fest fills downtown in spring, with the 2027 festival listed for March 31 to April 4. Venues are spread across downtown, and demand for rides peaks between sets and at closing time.
Downtown on foot, and when you need wheels
Downtown Boise is compact. Most hotels sit within a few blocks of the Idaho State Capitol, the Grove Plaza and the BoDo district, and the Basque Block is a short walk away. For dinner downtown from a downtown hotel, you may not need a ride at all, and we would not suggest booking one.
The picture changes as soon as the trip leaves the core. Meridian, Eagle and Nampa sit to the west along the interstate, the Boise State campus and its stadium are across the river, and the foothills neighbourhoods climb north of town. Those are the trips where taxis and rideshare earn their keep for one or two people, and where a group, a family with car seats or a business traveller with a timetable starts to look at a pre-booked car. The further out the trip and the more people in it, the better a fixed price compares.
Boise trips, side by side
Elly8.net prices below are fixed per vehicle and include the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity.
| Trip | Taxi | Rideshare | Bus | Elly8.net | Our honest pick |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solo, carry-on, BOI to downtown, Tuesday 2 p.m. | Metered | App price | US$1.50 | US$115 sedan | Bus or taxi |
| Couple, two bags, BOI to downtown, Sunday 11 p.m. | Metered | App price | No Sunday service listed | US$115 sedan, waiting inside | Taxi or pre-booked; the car for certainty |
| Family of five, car seats, BOI to Meridian | Metered; seats not supplied | Seats not guaranteed | Impractical | Fixed quote in the web booker, seats on request | Pre-booked SUV |
| Two friends, downtown dinner and home | Metered, two trips | App price, two trips | Possible early evening | from US$95 an hour, 3-hour minimum | Taxi or rideshare |
| Eight friends, Boise State game and home | Two or three cabs each way | Two or three cars, demand pricing after the game | Impractical | US$950 Sprinter, 5-hour evening | Pre-booked Sprinter |
| Wine country day near Caldwell | Long meter each way | Uncertain rides between wineries | No | US$700 sedan or US$1,400 Sprinter, 8 hours | Pre-booked |
| Business day: downtown, Meridian, airport | Several metered trips | Several trips | Slow | US$855 sedan, 10-hour roadshow day | Pre-booked for a full schedule |
We mean the top and fourth rows: for those trips, do not book us. A bus, a taxi or a rideshare will do the job for a fraction of the price. The pre-booked car makes sense further down, where the alternatives turn into several separate rides, a surge after a game, or nothing at all on a Sunday.
When to book a car instead
The Sunday or late-night arrival. With no Sunday bus service listed and fewer options late at night, a pre-booked car with flight tracking is the dependable choice. The chauffeur is inside baggage claim with a name board and you get complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. The full walkthrough is in our Boise airport car service guide.
Game nights. The five-hour evening out and event night package runs from US$475 in a business sedan and US$600 in a business SUV to US$950 in an Executive Sprinter. The chauffeur drops you near the venue and collects you from an agreed point after the final whistle, while rideshare prices are at their highest. See sports event transportation.
Families. Taxis and rideshare do not guarantee child seats. Ours are fitted before pickup on request; add each child's age and weight when you book.
Groups. Eight to twelve people with bags fit in one Executive Sprinter, US$300 between BOI and downtown. Our Boise Sprinter guide compares one Sprinter with two SUVs, and the Boise party bus guide covers celebration nights.
Out of town. Caldwell's wine country is about 28 miles (44 km) from downtown, and Sun Valley about 153 miles (247 km) on our routed estimates. A meter on those distances, plus finding a ride back, makes a fixed day package or a fixed long-distance quote the more predictable choice. See wine country tours and city to city car service.
Business travel. A day of meetings with one chauffeur waiting at each stop is simpler than booking a new ride each time, and a corporate account puts it on one monthly invoice. See hourly chauffeur service.
Price certainty vs price
A fixed fare is not a low fare. On the 4-mile (6 km) airport run, the bus is US$1.50 and a taxi or rideshare will usually cost far less than our US$115 business sedan. What the fixed fare buys is certainty: no meter, no surge pricing, no tip to calculate, a vehicle class you choose, child seats on request and an email confirmation before you travel. For some trips that is worth paying for; for many short trips around Boise it is not, and we would rather say so. The general comparisons are set out in chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Travelling on to a bigger city? In Anchorage, a longer winter and later flights change the answer; our Anchorage taxi or rideshare guide works through it.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi in Boise?
Boise taxis are metered, so the fare depends on distance and time; ask the driver for an estimate before a longer trip. Downtown is only about 4 miles (6 km) from the airport, so that ride is short. For comparison, a fixed Elly8.net business sedan between BOI and downtown is US$115 all-in.
Does Uber or Lyft pick up at Boise Airport?
Yes. Rideshare pickups are on the upper curb at the east end, through the second-floor rotunda exit, at shelters marked "Rideshare Pick-Up Area". The airport asks riders to request only after collecting luggage, and to check the plate, vehicle and driver name before getting in.
Is there a bus from Boise Airport on Sundays?
Valley Regional Transit lists airport service on Routes 2, 3 and 20 from Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday service listed. On Sundays, travellers use taxis, rideshare, hotel shuttles where offered, or a pre-booked car. The weekday and Saturday adult fare is US$1.50.
What is the best way home after a Boise State game?
For one or two people, a short walk away from the stadium crowds before requesting a taxi or rideshare usually helps. For a group, a pre-booked car on the five-hour evening package, from US$475 in a sedan or US$950 in a Sprinter, waits at an agreed pickup point.
Is a pre-booked car worth it for a short trip in Boise?
For a solo traveller with light bags on a weekday, usually not; the bus, a taxi or rideshare is better value. It is worth it on Sundays and late at night, for families with child seats, for groups, for trips out of town and for full business days.
Can a taxi take us to Sun Valley from Boise?
It may be possible, but at about 153 miles (247 km) the meter would run for around three hours. A fixed, all-in quote for a private car is available in the Elly8.net web booker, with the vehicle sized to your group and luggage.
