A Marbella taxi is a metered, licensed town taxi with fares set by the council: in 2026 the weekday daytime rate starts at €3.79 and adds €1.12 per kilometre, with higher rates at night, at weekends and on holidays. For short hops between the old town, the Golden Mile and Puerto Banús, a taxi is quick and inexpensive most of the year. App rides operate on the coast too, priced by demand.

The difficulty is not the fare but the timing. On summer nights, when Puerto Banús and the beach clubs empty at the same time, cars of every kind are scarce. This guide sets out the official tariff, what rideshare does and does not fix, and the moments when a car booked by the hour or for the evening is worth paying for.

How much does a taxi cost in Marbella?

Marbella's 2026 urban taxi tariff, VAT included, has three bands. Weekday daytime: €3.79 flag fall, €1.12 per km, €5.45 minimum. Weekday nights plus all of Saturday, Sunday and holidays: €4.64, €1.41 per km, €6.81 minimum. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve nights cost more. A pickup supplement and a five-plus-seat supplement may apply.

The full table is published by the Marbella town council, which approved the 2026 rates on 5 February 2026. Waiting time is charged by the hour: €22.95 on Tarifa 1, €28.68 on Tarifa 2 and €35.84 on Tarifa 3. The manual supplements are €1.00 for a customer pickup and €3.00 when the taxi carries more than five seats.

Per kilometre€1.12€1.41€1.76
Waiting, per hour€22.95€28.68€35.84
Minimum fare€5.45€6.81€8.54

To put that in context, the old town to Puerto Banús is about 8 km (5 mi), around 12 minutes on a clear road (our routed estimate). On the published rates, flag fall plus distance comes to roughly €13 on a weekday afternoon and €16 on a Saturday night, before any waiting or supplement. That is our arithmetic, not a quote, but it shows why a taxi is the default for a quick hop.

The Marbella tourism office notes that the town's urban buses link the main centres of Marbella, Puerto Banús and San Pedro Alcántara, and it publishes the radio taxi numbers. For a solo traveller heading along the main coastal road in daytime, the bus is a fair choice.

What rideshare does and does not change

App rides on the Costa del Sol use licensed hire vehicles with drivers (VTC), so the cars and drivers are regulated. The main advantages are the up-front price and booking from your phone without speaking Spanish. Uber's own Málaga guide lists Málaga to Marbella among its routes, and at Málaga airport the app pickups have their own car park, which our post on Málaga airport to Marbella: taxi vs Uber vs black car explains.

What rideshare does not change is the number of cars on the road at 2 a.m. in August. App prices rise when demand rises, and on the busiest nights a quote can be high and a match slow. Rideshare prices are not published, so we do not quote one; compare the app with the taxi tariff above on the night.

There is also the question of where the app car can reach you. In the marina and in the narrow lanes of the old town, vehicle access is limited, and a driver may stop at the nearest permitted point rather than at your door. The same applies to a taxi or to our chauffeur; the difference is that a booked chauffeur agrees the meeting point with you in advance, so nobody is circling the block looking for each other at midnight.

Wait times: when Marbella gets hard

Most of the year, a taxi from a rank in the old town or along the Golden Mile is easy. Three situations change that.

Summer closing time at Puerto Banús. The marina is the coast's late-night centre, and access for cars is restricted on busy evenings. When restaurants and clubs close, hundreds of people look for a ride at once from the same few streets. A rank queue is normal.

Golf mornings. The golf valley inland of Puerto Banús has several courses close together, and tee times cluster early. A taxi can take you there; getting a taxi back after the round and lunch, from a clubhouse in the hills, takes planning.

Hillside villas and estates. Benahavís, Sierra Blanca and the gated urbanizaciones above the coast are not places where taxis cruise. You will be calling for a car, and at peak times waiting for one.

Event weekends. When a big wedding, a golf tournament or a private event fills the hotels, the whole coast's supply of cars is stretched at the same hours, and the pressure spreads from Puerto Banús to the Golden Mile and the old town. If your stay coincides with one, book the key rides early, because the desk has to secure vehicles from a partner pool that is also in demand. Guests at the same event usually share Sprinters rather than competing for taxis outside the venue; the event transportation page explains how guest shuttles work.

None of this is a reason to avoid taxis. It is a reason to know which nights and which addresses will make you wait, and to book a car for those.

When to book a car instead

Here is where we think a booked car earns its price, and where it does not.

A dinner and a night out. The evening out and event night package costs from US$425 in a business sedan to US$850 in an Executive Sprinter. The car takes you to dinner in the old town, on to Puerto Banús and home to the villa at a time you set. For a group of six in a business SUV at US$550, that is about US$92 each as arithmetic only; Elly8.net prices are per vehicle.

A golf day. Book by the hour: US$85 in a business sedan, US$110 in a business SUV, US$140 in a First Class Sedan, US$130 in a First Class SUV and US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. The car waits through the round and lunch with the bags in the back. Four players with clubs need an SUV or a Sprinter; see seats and bags on the fleet page.

Shopping, property viewings and multi-stop days. If you are visiting several addresses, the meter keeps running while the taxi waits, and a new taxi has to be found at each stop. An hourly chauffeur is simpler, and the corporate roadshow day, from US$765 to US$1,530, suits property viewings across several estates.

Where a taxi is better. One or two people going from the hotel to dinner on the Golden Mile at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday should take a taxi. It will cost a fraction of a three-hour booking. We would tell you the same at the desk.

A sample week in Marbella, ride by ride

Most visitors do not need a car every day. A realistic week mixes the options, and the cost falls when each ride uses the right tool.

Arrival day. Land at Málaga in the evening with two cases each and a pre-booked business SUV at US$310 is waiting in arrivals. If you are a couple with carry-ons landing at lunchtime on a weekday, the airport taxi is the cheaper option; our airport comparison post does that arithmetic.

Beach and town days. Short taxi rides between the hotel, the old town and the beach clubs, at a few euros to the mid-teens each on the council tariff. No booking needed outside the busiest evenings.

Golf day. A business SUV by the hour from 8 a.m. for the round and lunch, four hours at US$110 an hour, so US$440 for the vehicle. The bags stay in the car, and nobody is phoning for a taxi from a clubhouse car park at 3 p.m.

The big night. Dinner in the old town, then Puerto Banús, home at 2 a.m. The evening out package from US$425 in a business sedan or US$550 in a business SUV sets the return time in advance, which is exactly the hour when taxis are hardest to find.

Day trip. Ronda or Granada with a driver for the day, covered in the posts linked below.

Departure. A morning flight from Málaga: the same fixed fare as the arrival, because airport fares are identical in either direction. Allow for summer traffic on the coast road; the desk sets the pickup time with you.

Added up, that week uses a booked car four times and taxis for everything else. That is the balance we recommend to most families and groups.

Families, groups and celebrations

A standard taxi carries a small group, and the council's tariff adds a supplement for vehicles with more than five seats. For a family with a stroller and beach gear, or a group of friends on a birthday weekend, one larger vehicle is usually easier than splitting up. An Executive Sprinter with driver carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags; see group transportation and, for weddings at beach clubs and fincas, wedding transportation.

Child seats are fitted on request before pickup, which matters on the coastal motorway. The chauffeur follows local rules in the vehicle itself, including on the drive home after dinner.

Days out from Marbella

Day trips are where taxis are least practical, because you need the car to wait and bring you back. The signature trip is an 8-hour private day to Ronda, from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter; our post on Málaga to Ronda: private car vs train weighs it against Renfe. For the Alhambra, see Málaga to Granada by car. Shorter coastal tours are covered by the private highlights tour, from US$340 to US$680; see private city tours.

Frequently asked questions

Are Marbella taxis metered?

Yes. Urban taxis use a meter with rates approved by the town council. In 2026 the weekday daytime band starts at €3.79 with €1.12 per km and a €5.45 minimum; nights, weekends and holidays start at €4.64 with €1.41 per km. Waiting time is charged by the hour.

Is Uber available in Marbella?

App rides operate on the Costa del Sol through licensed hire vehicles with drivers, and Uber's own Málaga guide lists Málaga to Marbella among its routes. Availability and price depend on demand. At peak summer hours, expect higher quotes and slower matches, and compare the app with the taxi tariff.

Why is it hard to get a taxi in Puerto Banús at night?

On summer nights the marina's restaurants and clubs close at similar times, car access is restricted on busy evenings, and many people look for rides from the same streets at once. Rank queues are normal. A booked evening package with a set pickup time avoids the wait.

How much is a car by the hour in Marbella?

Elly8.net hourly rates are US$85 in a business sedan, US$110 in a business SUV, US$130 in a First Class SUV, US$140 in a First Class Sedan and US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, with a 3-hour minimum. It suits golf rounds, shopping and multi-stop days.

Is a taxi or a booked car better for a short trip?

For one or two people on a short daytime hop, a taxi is cheaper and quick. A booked car makes sense when the car needs to wait, when there are several stops, when the group needs a larger vehicle, or when you need a guaranteed pickup at a busy time.

Can the chauffeur find a villa in the hills?

Yes. Send the full address, gate or concierge instructions and the guest-list name when you book. The partner arrives with those details and calls ahead if the gate needs opening. For steep or narrow drives, an SUV is often a better choice than a sedan.
