A Madrid taxi is one of the better-regulated cabs in Europe. The cars are white with a red diagonal band, the tariff is set by the city council and published each year, and the trip most visitors care about, Barajas airport to a central hotel, costs a flat €33 at any hour. Knowing how the meter works, which places add a supplement and where the ranks are will save you money and a few awkward moments at the kerb.

A taxi is not always the right tool, though. For families with child seats, groups of five or more, early flights, meetings with no slack and days out of the city, a pre-booked chauffeur at a fixed price is often simpler. Elly8.net's Barajas fares start at US$120 per vehicle in a business sedan. This guide covers the taxi first, then where the line falls.

How much does a taxi cost in Madrid?

In 2026 a Madrid taxi starts at €2.55 on weekday daytimes or €3.20 at other times, then charges €1.40 or €1.60 per kilometre, switching to €27 or €29 an hour in slow traffic. The airport has a flat €33 fare to anywhere inside the M-30. Trips from main stations and IFEMA add €8.

Madrid's rates come from the city's taxi tariff, summarised in English on the tourism board's page about getting around Madrid by taxi. The meter combines a distance rate and a time rate and applies them alternately depending on the speed of the car, so a fast run along the M-30 is charged mostly by the kilometre while a crawl through Sol is charged mostly by the minute.

Madrid taxi tariff, from 1 January 2026Weekday daytimeNights, weekends and holidays
Starting fare€2.55 (Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.)€3.20
Per kilometre€1.40 (Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.)€1.60
Per hour, in slow traffic€27 (7 a.m. to 9 p.m.)€29 (9 p.m. to 7 a.m.)
Airport to or from inside the M-30€33 flat, 24 hours, no supplements€33 flat
Supplement from Atocha, Chamartín, Avenida de América, Méndez Álvaro or IFEMA€8€8
Supplement on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and Three Kings' Night (trips ending 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.)-€7

The tariff splits the region into zones. Zone A is the city of Madrid and Zone B is the rest of the Comunidad de Madrid. If you order a taxi by phone or through an app rather than hailing it, esmadrid.com lists a charge for the run to your pickup point of €5 in Zone A and €8 in Zone B, and notes that radio-taxi companies start the meter when the driver heads towards you.

The airport flat fare, and when it does not apply

Aena, which runs Barajas, explains the airport rules on its taxi page. The €33 flat fare applies 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to trips that start or end at the airport and start or end inside the M-30 ring road, and no supplements can be added to it. That covers the Salamanca district, the Golden Triangle of museums, Gran Vía, Sol, Chamberí and the Castellana as far as the ring.

Outside the M-30, a different airport rate applies. For trips leaving the terminals to destinations outside the ring, the first 9 km cost a minimum of €22, after which the meter continues at the normal rate. That matters for the business parks along the A-1, for La Moraleja and Alcobendas and for hotels near IFEMA. A taxi to those places is still reasonable, but it is no longer the fixed, predictable number most visitors expect.

The ranks are on Floor 0 in the arrivals area at Terminals 1, 2 and 4, each with a taxi rank and a radio-taxi rank. Aena's advice is to use the designated rank, to ignore anyone offering rides inside the terminal, to make sure the meter is started, and to ask for a receipt if you need to make a complaint. If you arrive at the T4S satellite, you take the underground shuttle to the main T4 building before you reach the rank; Aena explains the links on its page about transport between terminals.

Finding a taxi in the city

Spotting an official cab. Licensed Madrid taxis are white with a diagonal red band and the city's emblem on the front doors, and a green light on the roof shows the car is free. esmadrid.com puts the fleet at more than 15,000 taxis, so outside peak moments you rarely wait long.

Hailing and ranks. You can raise your hand to stop a free taxi on the street. Ranks are marked by a blue sign with a white T. At railway stations, coach stations and the airport you must use the designated rank rather than flag a car at the kerb.

Apps. Several taxi apps and radio-taxi services operate in the city, and the city council has its own official app, TxMAD. esmadrid.com also notes that the Free Now app has begun offering closed prices on all routes, which gives you a fixed figure before you ride. Ride-hailing services such as Uber, Cabify and Bolt are a separate category; we compare them in Uber in Madrid vs taxi vs private car.

Payment. Taxis accept credit cards as well as cash, and drivers must carry change for notes up to €20. Some cars offer Wi-Fi.

Children and pets. Some taxis carry child car seats, but you need to book in advance and say you need one. Small pets travel at the driver's discretion; guide dogs are always allowed.

Practical tips for North American visitors

Have the address ready, not just the hotel name. Madrid has several hotels with similar names, and many central streets are one-way or restricted to local traffic. Showing the driver the full street address on your phone avoids a detour.

Plan early departures. A 5 a.m. ride to Barajas for a transatlantic flight is easy to find on a weekday, but if you book a radio taxi, remember that the meter starts when the driver heads towards you and the app or phone charge applies. For a fixed figure the night before, a closed-price app booking or a pre-booked car gives you certainty.

Keep small notes for short rides. Card payment is standard, but drivers are only required to carry change for notes up to €20, so a €50 note on a €9 fare can be awkward.

Think about the return as well as the arrival. The flat fare works in both directions, so the trip back to the airport costs the same €33 from inside the M-30.

What typical trips cost: worked examples

The examples below apply the published tariff to typical trips. They are arithmetic illustrations, not quotes: the meter's switch between distance and time rates means traffic changes the final figure.

  • Barajas to a hotel on the Paseo del Prado, any time. €33 flat. This is the fare most visitors will pay, and it is excellent value for one to four people with normal luggage.
  • Atocha station to the Salamanca district, weekday afternoon, about 3 km. Starting fare €2.55, the €8 station supplement, and roughly €4.20 in distance charges at €1.40 per kilometre, so about €15 before any time charged in traffic. The supplement is a large share of a short ride.
  • IFEMA to a hotel on Gran Vía at the close of a fair day. The €8 IFEMA supplement applies, the ring roads are busy at closing time and the rank queue can be long, so both the wait and the time-based meter add up.
  • Barajas to a villa outside the M-30 in the early hours. The €22 airport minimum for the first 9 km, then the night meter rate of €1.60 per kilometre, so the total depends on the distance and the road.

When a pre-booked chauffeur wins over a Madrid taxi

The taxi is the right answer for many trips, and the desk will happily say so. A chauffeur booked through Elly8.net is worth the higher price in a specific set of situations.

More people or more bags than one cab takes. A family of five with transatlantic luggage needs two taxis. One Elly8.net business SUV carries six passengers and six bags for a fixed US$160 from Barajas to central Madrid; an Executive Sprinter carries 12 passengers and 12 bags for US$315. Those are per-vehicle prices; split twelve ways the Sprinter works out to about US$26 per person, which is an arithmetic comparison, not a per-person fare.

Guaranteed child seats. Taxis can carry them only if you book ahead with a company that has them. With Elly8.net you request the seats and the children's ages when you book, and the partner fits them before pickup.

A deadline after landing. A taxi starts at the rank; a chauffeur starts with your flight number. With meet and greet, the driver tracks the landing and waits inside your arrivals hall with a name board, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, which covers a slow passport queue at T4.

Stations with luggage. Arriving at Atocha or Chamartín on the AVE means the €8 supplement and a rank queue when a full train empties. A train station transfer has the chauffeur waiting when you step off.

Days with several stops. A taxi meter for a day of meetings in AZCA, Salamanca and Las Tablas adds up and leaves you hailing between each one. A car by the hour costs from US$85 per hour in a business sedan with a 3-hour minimum and waits outside each meeting; a full corporate roadshow day runs from US$765. See corporate car service for accounts with monthly invoicing.

Leaving the city. Toledo, Segovia and El Escorial are outside the city tariff area entirely. Our Madrid to Toledo comparison shows when a driver beats the train, and the Toledo day package costs from US$630 for 8 hours in a business sedan. The Toledo tourist office lists what to see once you arrive.

Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, or seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.

Fares are fixed, per vehicle and all-in: they include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet, with tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time billed at cost. A Barajas transfer costs from US$120 in a business sedan to US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, the same in either direction, and a round trip from US$230. Book a Madrid airport transfer by entering your flight number and hotel, choosing the vehicle, and pressing Reserve now, or use the web booker for any other address. Confirmation comes by email.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Madrid airport taxi flat rate?

€33 between Barajas and any address inside the M-30 ring road, in either direction, 24 hours a day, every day, with no supplements added. Outside the M-30, an airport minimum of €22 covers the first 9 km and the meter runs after that. Use the official ranks on Floor 0 in arrivals at T1, T2 and T4.

Do Madrid taxis take credit cards?

Yes. Madrid taxis accept credit cards as well as cash, according to the city's tourism board, and drivers must carry change for notes up to €20. Ask for a receipt at the end of the trip, which you need if you want to make a complaint.

Why do some Madrid taxi fares include an extra €8?

Under the 2026 tariff, taxi journeys that start at Atocha or Chamartín railway stations, the Avenida de América or Méndez Álvaro coach stations, or the IFEMA fairgrounds carry an €8 supplement. It is a legitimate charge, not an overcharge. The airport flat fare is the exception: no supplements apply to it.

Are child seats available in Madrid taxis?

Some Madrid taxis carry child seats, but you must book in advance and tell the company you need one. With an Elly8.net booking you add the seats and the children's ages when you reserve, and the partner fits them before pickup in a business SUV or Sprinter with room for strollers and bags.

Is a Madrid taxi cheaper than a private driver?

For one or two people going between Barajas and a central hotel, yes: €33 against US$120 for an Elly8.net business sedan. The chauffeur is the better buy for larger groups, child seats, early meetings, station arrivals with luggage, multi-stop days and trips out of the city.

How do you recognise an official Madrid taxi?

Official taxis are white with a red diagonal band and the city's coat of arms on the front doors, with a green roof light when free. At the airport, stations and coach terminals, take a taxi only from the marked rank, and ignore anyone offering rides inside the building.
