Uber vs cab comes down to how the price is set. A taxi charges a regulated tariff that anyone can read, such as New York's US$3.00 start and US$3.50 a mile, or a published flat fare from the airport. An app ride quotes a price when you request it, and that price follows demand, which can make it cheaper than a taxi on a quiet afternoon and more expensive on a wet Friday night or after a concert.
On safety, the gap is smaller than people think in cities with strong regulation: in New York and Toronto both taxis and app drivers must be licensed and pass background checks. The practical differences are elsewhere, in where you are picked up at the airport, whether the price can move, and how many people and bags fit. Below is a fair comparison with official numbers, and the cases where a pre-booked fixed fare beats both.
Is Uber cheaper than a cab?
Sometimes. At quiet times an app ride can cost about the same as a metered taxi or less, and at busy times it can cost more because app prices follow demand. Taxi tariffs and airport flat fares are published by regulators and do not surge. At airports and late at night, compare the app quote with the official taxi fare.
App prices are not published as tariffs, so no one can give an honest single number for an Uber or Lyft trip. JFK's own ride share page puts it plainly: app costs to and from the airport vary with your location and the time of day, and you should check your app for the exact price. A taxi's price, by contrast, can be worked out in advance from the regulator's tariff.
How taxi prices are set
Taxi fares are regulated, and the rules are public. New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission lists the standard metered fare on its taxi fare page: a US$3.00 initial charge and 70 cents per fifth of a mile, or per minute in slow traffic, plus fixed surcharges. Between JFK and Manhattan the yellow cab charges a US$70 flat fare in either direction, plus surcharges, tolls and tip. Our taxi fare calculator guide works through those surcharges line by line.
Las Vegas publishes zone fares from the airport to the Strip. The Nevada Taxicab Authority lists approximate fares of US$22.25, US$26.25 and US$30.25 for its three zones, plus a 3% excise tax and a card fee. In Toronto, the City says that a taxi hailed on the street or picked up at a stand must activate the meter and charge the City-regulated rate.
The upside of a tariff is predictability within a range. The downside is the time component: a metered taxi stuck in traffic keeps counting, and the final figure is only known at the end.
How app prices are set
App rides quote a price before the trip, based on the expected route and on demand at that moment. When many people request rides at once, at an airport bank of arrivals, at closing time or after a game, the quote rises. When demand is low, it can be very competitive.
Two rules from the regulators are worth knowing. In Toronto, the City's passenger safety page notes that app rides, which it calls private transportation companies, and taxis booked through a brokerage may charge a rate different from the City-regulated rate, and that you must agree to the price before the trip starts. In New York, the TLC explains on its Your Ride page that for-hire vehicles, which include black cars and luxury limousines as well as app rides, provide only prearranged service through a base or app, and the price is set by the base or app used. New York taxi apps can now also offer upfront pricing.
Safety: what regulators require of each
In the big regulated markets, both taxis and app drivers are licensed. The TLC says it licenses over 130,000 vehicles in New York City, that each receives safety and emissions inspections, and that all are driven by TLC-licensed drivers who have passed background checks. Toronto states that taxi and app drivers and vehicles must meet City standards for criminal background checks and driving history checks, and must use snow or all-weather tires from December 1 to April 30.
Identification differs, and it matters. New York yellow taxis carry the yellow colour, taxi T markings and medallion numbers on the roof and sides; for-hire vehicles carry plates that typically begin with T and end with C and a TLC decal on the windshield. Toronto taxis display a plate on the rear, the number on the side door and a roof light, while app vehicles display an identifying sign in the rear window. JFK's guidance for app rides is simple: always check the car's licence plate against the details in the app before you get in.
The real risk is the unlicensed ride. Nevada's Transportation Authority warns that offering passenger transportation without a certificate, permit or licence is unlawful, and advises travellers to use rideshare only through the official app or to take a licensed taxi or limousine. JFK warns against accepting rides from fraudulent drivers and directs passengers to the official pickup areas.
Airport pickups: where each one meets you
At airports the difference is often a walk. Taxis usually load at the kerb outside arrivals, while app rides use designated zones that can be some distance away.
| Airport | Taxi | App ride (Uber, Lyft) | Pre-booked chauffeur |
|---|---|---|---|
| JFK, New York | Official taxi pickup areas | Follow signs after baggage claim; Terminals 5 and 7 temporarily at Howard Beach AirTrain Station | Inside arrivals with a name board |
| Boston Logan | Official taxi pickup areas | Designated ride app areas; Central Parking Garage for Terminal A | Inside arrivals with a name board |
| Harry Reid, Las Vegas | Terminal 1 east side near doors 1 to 4; Terminal 3 Level Zero near door 52 | Terminal 1 parking garage Level 2; Terminal 3 garage Valet Level | Inside arrivals with a name board |

Accessibility and refusals
Rules on who must be served differ between taxis and apps. Toronto's passenger safety page states that taxi drivers must serve the first person who requests a ride, however short the fare, and cannot refuse service to a person with a disability, including someone accompanied by a service animal. At JFK, the airport notes that Uber and Lyft offer accessible vehicle options, including wheelchair ramps and extra space, available for pickup in front of the terminal, and suggests contacting your airline before the flight for help from the gate.
For travellers who need a particular vehicle, the safest course is to arrange it in advance. With a pre-booked car you can choose a larger vehicle, ask for child seats, and tell the desk about mobility needs when you book, rather than discovering at the kerb what is available.
Premium app rides and the black car
Premium app tiers sit between a taxi and a pre-booked chauffeur. They promise a more upscale car than the standard tier, but the price is still set by the app at the time of the request and can move with demand, and the pickup still uses the app zones at airports such as Boston and Las Vegas, where ride app passengers may only be picked up in the designated areas. A pre-booked black car fixes the price in advance and meets you inside arrivals. The Uber Black vs chauffeur page goes through that comparison in detail.
Real trips: who wins
Solo traveller, JFK to Midtown, mid-afternoon. The taxi flat fare of US$70 plus surcharges and tip is predictable, and an app quote may be similar or lower if demand is quiet. Either is a sensible choice; the AirTrain plus subway is cheaper still for a carry-on traveller.
Couple, Harry Reid to a Strip hotel, Saturday evening. The taxi zone fare, US$22.25 to US$30.25 plus tax and card fee, is hard to beat and does not rise with demand. If a convention or a fight night has the taxi line long and the app quote high, the price comparison is easy. On a normal evening the app may be close to the taxi; check both before you walk to either pickup area, because they are in different places.
Family of five with bags, Logan to a Back Bay hotel. One taxi may not take five people and their luggage, and a large app vehicle is subject to the same demand pricing as any other. An Elly8.net Business SUV for up to six passengers and six bags is a fixed US$170, with the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals and child seats on request.
Late arrival in the small hours in Toronto. With the airport train finished for the night, the choice is between a taxi, an app ride whose quote follows demand, and a booked car. A pre-booked Elly8.net sedan from Pearson to downtown is US$155, with the flight tracked and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. In Toronto, rides run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs; see the Toronto price panel.
When the pre-booked car wins over both
A pre-booked fixed fare is not the cheapest option for a solo traveller at a quiet hour, and it does not pretend to be. It wins when certainty matters more than the lowest possible price: a delayed flight, a group that would need two cabs, children who need seats, an executive with a meeting to make, a wedding or a gala where the car must be at the door at a set time, or a company that wants one monthly invoice through a corporate account.
On Elly8.net the price is fixed when you book and includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Outside Toronto, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk. The chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and chauffeur vs taxi pages compare each option in more depth, and city fares are on the New York car service and Las Vegas car service pages.
Tips and the total cost
Neither taxi tariffs nor app quotes normally include the tip. New York's taxi tariff reads "plus tips and any tolls", and the city's official tourism guide lists 15 to 20% as standard for taxis and rideshares. A fair comparison adds the tip to both, and to any pre-booked quote that excludes it. Our tipping guide explains how included gratuity works, and our comparison of airport shuttle buses and private cars covers the cheapest option of all.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber safer than a taxi?
In regulated cities such as New York and Toronto, both taxi and app drivers must be licensed and pass background checks, and vehicles must meet city standards. The bigger safety risk is an unlicensed ride. Use the official taxi stand or the official app, and check the plate against the app before you get in.
Why does an Uber cost more than a taxi sometimes?
App prices follow demand, so when many people request rides at once, at an airport arrival peak, after a concert or in bad weather, the quote rises. Taxi tariffs and airport flat fares are set by regulators and do not change with demand, although a metered taxi still counts time in traffic.
Is a cab or an Uber better from the airport?
For one or two travellers with light bags at a quiet time, either works, and the taxi is often simpler because it loads at the kerb. App pickups use designated zones that can be a walk away, such as parking garages at Las Vegas and Boston. Groups and late arrivals often do better with a pre-booked car.
Can a taxi give an upfront price?
Increasingly, yes. New York's TLC allows licensed e-hail apps to offer upfront pricing in yellow and green taxis, and Toronto taxis booked through a brokerage may quote a rate you agree before the trip. A taxi hailed on the street or taken from a stand runs the regulated meter.
When is a pre-booked car better than both?
When the price must be fixed in advance, the group or luggage is too big for one taxi, children need seats, the flight may be delayed, or a meeting or event cannot slip. An Elly8.net fare includes taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet, and does not surge.
How can you check that a taxi or app car is licensed?
In New York, look for yellow taxi markings and medallion numbers, or for-hire plates that typically begin with T and end with C and a TLC windshield decal. In Toronto, taxis show a roof light and plate numbers, and app vehicles display a sign in the rear window.
