A Barcelona airport taxi is a black-and-yellow car from the official rank outside arrivals, and its price is set by a public tariff rather than by the driver. For 2026 the metropolitan taxi authority charges a €2.80 flag fall, €1.35 per kilometre on weekdays between 8:00 and 20:00, €1.66 per kilometre at night, at weekends and on holidays, plus a €4.60 airport supplement, with a €21 minimum for any ride that starts at the airport. On the routed 13.5 km to Passeig de Gràcia, that arithmetic comes to roughly €26 by day and €30 at night before any time charged in slow traffic.
Rideshare apps also work at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat (BCN), but their prices are set in the app at the moment you request and are not published. A pre-booked Elly8.net car costs more for a solo traveller, from US$105 per vehicle in a business sedan to the centre, but it is fixed weeks ahead, includes meet and greet inside arrivals, and does not change with the queue, the hour or the weather. Below is a straight comparison, with the situations where the taxi is simply the better choice.
How much is a taxi from Barcelona airport to the city?
Barcelona taxis run on the 2026 metropolitan tariff: €2.80 flag fall, €1.35 per km by day on weekdays or €1.66 per km at night and weekends, plus a €4.60 airport supplement and a €21 minimum from the airport. To Passeig de Gràcia that is roughly €26 to €30 before slow-traffic time. A fixed Elly8.net sedan is from US$105 per vehicle.
All of those figures come from the official 2026 urban taxi tariffs published by the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona, the body that regulates taxis across the city and its neighbouring municipalities. The same page lists a €4.60 supplement for vehicles carrying five to eight passengers, a waiting-time rate of €27.75 an hour, and a fixed €46 fare between the airport and the Moll Adossat cruise terminals with every supplement included. Tolls, if you ask for a toll route, are paid by the passenger.
The tariff is a good reason to trust the official rank. It also explains why the taxi is hard to beat for one person with a carry-on: a fare in the high twenties of euros is less than half the published Elly8.net sedan fare. The comparison changes once you add people, bags, child seats, a late arrival or a need to know the cost before you leave home.

The 2026 taxi tariff, line by line
Barcelona's tariff has two metered rates and two special ones. Knowing which applies saves a lot of guessing at the rank.
| Tariff element (2026) | Amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Flag fall | €2.80 | Every metered ride |
| T-1 per kilometre | €1.35 | Weekdays 8:00 to 20:00 |
| T-2 per kilometre | €1.66 | Weekdays 20:00 to 8:00, Saturdays, holidays |
| Waiting time | €27.75 per hour | When the taxi is stopped or crawling |
| Airport supplement | €4.60 | Rides to or from BCN |
| Five to eight passengers | €4.60 | Larger taxis carrying 5 to 8 people |
| Special nights | €4.60 | 23 to 24 June, 24 to 25 December, 31 December to 1 January, 20:00 to 8:00 |
| Minimum from the airport | €21 | Any ride starting at BCN, supplements included |
| T-4 airport to Moll Adossat | €46 fixed | Airport to cruise terminals, all supplements included |
There is also a closed-price tariff, T-3, that can only be booked through approved taxi apps. It is calculated from the flag fall, distance, an estimate of time in real traffic and the supplements, it includes five minutes of waiting at the pickup point, and the meter stays at zero during the ride. The minimum for a taxi booked by phone or app is €8. For an airport arrival, that means even a licensed taxi can give you a fixed number in advance if you use one of the approved apps.
What the meter adds up to on common routes
The meter follows the road the driver takes and adds time when the car is stuck, so the real fare will move around these numbers. As a sense check, here is the tariff arithmetic on routed road distances from Terminal 1, before any waiting-time charge.
| From BCN Terminal 1 to | Routed distance | T-1 day estimate | T-2 night estimate | Elly8.net fixed fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passeig de Gràcia (Eixample) | 13.5 km / 8.4 mi | about €26 | about €30 | from US$105 sedan |
| Gothic Quarter | 15.5 km / 9.6 mi | about €28 | about €33 | from US$105 sedan |
| Port Olímpic hotels | 15.8 km / 9.8 mi | about €29 | about €34 | from US$105 sedan |
| Fira Gran Via | 8.1 km / 5.0 mi | €21 minimum applies | €21 minimum applies | quoted in the booker |
| Moll Adossat cruise terminals | about 12 km / 7 mi | €46 fixed (T-4) | €46 fixed (T-4) | quoted in the booker |
The distances are routed estimates on the public road network, clear road; the taxi estimates are our arithmetic from the official tariff, not quotes. The Elly8.net figures are the published fixed fares per vehicle. The Eixample, the Gothic Quarter, El Born, the Diagonal and the beach hotels all sit within the Passeig de Gràcia price band on the Barcelona city page.
Two details matter more than the per-kilometre rate. First, a taxi in heavy traffic charges for time, and the Ronda Litoral and the Gran Via both slow badly at weekday peaks and when a large show closes at Fira Gran Via. Second, a group of five or more in a larger taxi pays the extra €4.60, and a family with a lot of luggage may still need two cars.
Where the taxi ranks are, and where the queue forms
According to Aena's taxi page for El Prat, there are ranks opposite the arrivals areas of Terminal 1, the Barcelona-Madrid shuttle area, and Terminals T2A, T2B and T2C. At Terminal 1, the official taxi service is on the ground floor (floor 0), with separate ranks for taxis booked in advance and for walk-up rides. Aena also points out that the only official taxi in Barcelona is black and yellow, which is worth remembering if anyone in the hall offers you a ride.
Most flights from the United States and Canada land at Terminal 1 in the morning, in the same wave as long-haul flights from the Gulf and Asia and a busy hour of European arrivals. That is when the rank is longest. It usually moves steadily, because Barcelona has a large taxi fleet, but after a red-eye with two children and four suitcases, twenty minutes outside in the July sun or the January wind is the part people remember.
Terminal 2 handles mainly low-cost and short-haul flights and has its own ranks. If you connect through Madrid, Lisbon, London or another hub and land at T2, check before you leave the building: a taxi from T2 costs the same tariff, but the free airport shuttle between terminals takes about 10 to 14 minutes if you need to change.
Rideshare at El Prat in one paragraph
Uber, Cabify and Bolt are all listed by Aena for El Prat, each with designated pickup points in the terminals, and the price is set in the app when you request it. That makes app rides convenient and occasionally cheaper than the meter, but not predictable: the price can climb when many flights land together, during trade shows and on festival nights. The pickup points and how the app price behaves are covered in detail in our guide to Uber at Barcelona airport, so this post sticks to the comparison.
Wait times: where each option loses time
Price is half the decision. Time is the other half, and each option spends it in a different place.
The official taxi. The time cost is the rank. Off-peak it is often a short wait; in the morning long-haul wave or late on a Friday in summer it grows. Once you are in the car, you pay for the road and for any crawling in traffic.
The app ride. The time cost is the match and the walk. You request after collecting bags, wait for a driver to accept and reach the airport, then walk to the designated pickup point, which at T1 can mean changing floors with luggage.
The metro or train. Metro L9 Sud serves both terminals with its own €5.90 Airport ticket, according to TMB's fares page, and the R2 Nord commuter train leaves from Terminal 2. Both are cheap and reliable, but most hotels need a change or a walk at the other end.
The pre-booked car. The waiting is done by the chauffeur. The flight is tracked, the chauffeur is inside arrivals with a name board when you come through, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. You walk with the chauffeur to the car, which is already in the right place.
A fair verdict by situation
One traveller, carry-on, daytime, hotel in the Eixample. Take the taxi. The tariff is fair, the drivers are licensed, and a fixed US$105 car is hard to justify. If you are watching every euro and your hotel is near a metro stop, the L9 Sud is cheaper still.
Two people with one checked bag each. The taxi still usually wins on price. Book a car only if the cost needs to be fixed in advance, if you land at night and do not want to queue, or if you are heading straight to a meeting.
A family of four with child seats. Book a business SUV, from US$140 per vehicle. A taxi from the rank does not come with child seats fitted, and four people, four large cases and a stroller do not fit in a standard taxi. Elly8.net fits seats before pickup when you give the children's ages.
Five to twelve travellers. One Executive Sprinter, US$275 per vehicle to Passeig de Gràcia, keeps the group and the luggage together. Dividing US$275 by ten is about US$28 each, as arithmetic for comparison only; the price is for the vehicle, not per person. Two or three taxis would cost less in total but split the group at the rank and on arrival. More on group transportation.
MWC week or a big trade show. Book early. Hotels fill city-wide, the ranks get busy at the airport and at Fira Gran Via at closing time, and app prices respond to demand. A fixed fare and an hourly car for meeting days remove two variables from a week that already has plenty.
A late arrival after the metro has closed. The taxi rank still works and remains fair value. The car makes sense if you are tired, carrying a lot, travelling with children or simply want a named person waiting.
Side by side
| Option | How it is priced | Where you board | Typical wait | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official taxi | Metered 2026 tariff, €21 minimum from BCN | Rank outside arrivals, T1 floor 0 or T2 | Short off-peak, longer in the morning wave | 1 to 2 people, light luggage |
| Taxi via approved app (T-3) | Closed price set at booking | Taxi pickup point | Driver arrival time | Wanting a taxi with a known price |
| Rideshare app | Set in the app at request, varies with demand | Designated app pickup point | Match plus walk to pickup | Flexible travellers who use the apps |
| Metro L9 Sud | €5.90 Airport ticket | Station inside T1 and T2 | Timetable | Solo, carry-on, near a metro stop |
| Elly8.net pre-booked car | Fixed per vehicle, from US$105 sedan | Inside arrivals, name board | None; the chauffeur is waiting | Families, groups, late flights, fixed budgets |

What the Elly8.net fare includes
The published fares cover the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. From El Prat to Passeig de Gràcia the fares run from US$105 in a business sedan, US$140 in a business SUV and US$185 in a First Class Sedan to US$275 in an Executive Sprinter, the same price in either direction, and a round trip is from US$200 to US$525.
Rides in Barcelona are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer. A business sedan carries three passengers and two bags; a business SUV or First Class SUV six passengers and six bags; the Executive Sprinter twelve passengers and twelve bags. See the classes on the fleet page and the meeting process on meet and greet.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a fixed taxi fare from Barcelona airport to the city?
Not to the city centre. The meter runs on the 2026 metropolitan tariff, with a €4.60 airport supplement and a €21 minimum for rides from the airport. The only fixed taxi fare is €46 between the airport and the Moll Adossat cruise terminals. Approved taxi apps can also offer a closed price before the ride under the T-3 tariff.
How much should a taxi to Passeig de Gràcia cost?
On the routed 13.5 km, the tariff arithmetic is about €26 on a weekday by day and about €30 at night or at weekends, before any waiting-time charge in slow traffic. These are our estimates from the official tariff, not quotes. A fixed Elly8.net business sedan is from US$105 per vehicle.
Where is the taxi rank at Terminal 1?
On the ground floor, floor 0, opposite the arrivals area. Aena lists separate ranks for pre-booked taxis and walk-up taxis at T1, plus ranks at T2A, T2B and T2C. Official Barcelona taxis are black and yellow; decline offers of rides inside the hall.
Is a taxi or a private car better for a family?
For a family of four or more with large cases and child seats, a pre-booked business SUV, from US$140 per vehicle, is usually the better fit. Rank taxis do not come with child seats fitted, and four large cases plus a stroller rarely fit. For two adults with light bags, the taxi is the economical choice.
Do Barcelona taxis charge extra for luggage or groups?
The 2026 tariff lists no luggage supplement, but rides carrying five to eight passengers in a larger taxi add €4.60. Night rides on special dates, such as 23 to 24 June and New Year's Eve, add €4.60 between 20:00 and 8:00. Elly8.net fares are per vehicle and do not change with group size within the vehicle's capacity.
What happens if the flight is late and a car is booked?
The chauffeur tracks the flight and adjusts to the real landing time, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. If the flight is cancelled or diverted, call the 24/7 desk and the booking moves to your new arrival. The cancellation terms only apply if you cancel the ride itself.
