A Winnipeg taxi charges by the meter under a maximum fare schedule set by the City: a basic charge of C$3.95 on a street trip, or C$5.20 from the airport, plus C$0.19 for each additional 100 metres and C$0.19 for each 20 seconds of waiting, GST included. Once the meter is running, that works out to roughly C$1.90 per kilometre.
Rideshare works differently. Uber and Lyft are licensed in the city, but their fares are not regulated; you see the price in the app before you confirm, and it moves with demand. For most short trips, a taxi or an app is the right answer, and this guide says so. A pre-booked Elly8.net car, from US$100 from the airport to downtown, wins in a narrower set of situations, which are set out below.
Is a taxi or rideshare cheaper in Winnipeg?
It depends on the moment. Taxi fares follow the City's maximum schedule and cannot surge: about C$28 from YWG to downtown on distance alone. Rideshare prices are not regulated and change with demand, so they can be cheaper on a quiet afternoon and dearer after a Jets game or in a snowstorm. Compare the two before you choose.
The taxi figure is our arithmetic from the City's published maximum rate and the 12 km (7 mi) distance, not a quote from a taxi company. Time spent at slow speeds or in traffic adds to it, and taxis may charge less than the maximum.

How Winnipeg taxis charge
The City of Winnipeg's maximum fare schedule sets the rates for standard and accessible taxis:
- Basic charge: C$3.95, or C$5.20 for trips from the airport.
- Distance: C$0.19 for each additional 100 metres, which is about C$1.90 per kilometre.
- Waiting: C$0.19 for each 20 seconds, which works out to about C$34 an hour when the cab is stopped or crawling.
- GST is included in the fare.
The schedule says the meter must always be on while the taxi is providing service. A lower fare can be negotiated in advance, but if it is, the amount charged cannot be more than the meter shows at the end of the trip. The City also notes that a driver may ask for the fare in advance under the vehicle-for-hire by-law.
Because these are maximum rates, a Winnipeg taxi cannot charge more on a busy night. What changes is how long you wait for one, and how much time the meter spends in traffic.
How rideshare works in Winnipeg
The City's passenger information page sets out the rules for personal transportation providers, the category that includes Uber and Lyft:
- Trips must be pre-arranged through a digital platform before the vehicle arrives. App drivers cannot accept a street hail.
- Payment goes through the platform. Drivers cannot take payment directly.
- Fares are not regulated, but they must be available and agreed in advance, which is the up-front price shown in the app.
That up-front price is useful: you know the number before you commit. It is also variable. When demand rises, after a game, at the end of a festival night, during a storm, the apps raise prices to bring more drivers out. When the city is quiet, prices drop, sometimes below the taxi meter. Nobody can honestly publish a Winnipeg rideshare price for a given trip, so we do not.
At the airport, the YWG rideshare page lists Lyft and Uber as the licensed companies, with pickups on Arrivals Level 1 outside Door 1. Taxis wait near Door 3.
Four common trips, side by side
| Trip | Approx. distance | Taxi, maximum meter on distance (C$) | Rideshare | Elly8.net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YWG to downtown | 12 km (7 mi) | about C$28 | app price, varies | US$100 business sedan, US$260 Executive Sprinter |
| Downtown to Princess Auto Stadium | 12 km (7.5 mi) | about C$27 | app price, varies; peaks after the game | Evening out package from US$550 |
| Exchange District to Osborne Village | 3 km (2 mi) | about C$10 | app price, varies | Hourly from US$110, 3-hour minimum |
| Downtown to Assiniboine Park | 9.5 km (6 mi) | about C$22 | app price, varies | Hourly from US$110, 3-hour minimum |
Taxi figures are our arithmetic from the City's maximum schedule and routed distances; waiting time is extra. Elly8.net prices are in US dollars, fixed and all-in per vehicle, with the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity included.
Read honestly, the table says that for a single short ride, a Winnipeg taxi is far cheaper than a pre-booked car. A three-hour minimum for a 3 km hop makes no sense, and we would not recommend it. The pre-booked car only competes when the trip is part of a longer evening, when a group would otherwise need two or three cabs, or when the airport meet itself is what you are paying for.
Wait times: where they happen
Winnipeg is not a city of long cab queues most of the time. The waits cluster in predictable places:
The airport after a bank of arrivals. When several flights land together, the taxi stand near Door 3 and the rideshare zone outside Door 1 both get busy. On a winter evening, even a ten-minute wait outside is unpleasant. Our Winnipeg airport limo guide explains how a pre-booked meet inside arrivals avoids it.
Canada Life Centre after the final whistle. A Jets game or a big concert empties the arena onto the same few blocks of Portage Avenue at once. Taxis are in demand, app prices rise and matches take longer. Walking a few blocks away before requesting a ride often helps.
Princess Auto Stadium on Bombers days. The stadium is in the south of the city, and a full house leaves at once. Plan the ride home before kickoff.
Snowstorms. Fewer drivers, slower roads and more people who do not want to drive themselves. This is when the gap between a fixed booking and a variable app price is widest.
Festival nights. Festival du Voyageur in St. Boniface, which the festival has set for February 12 to 21, 2027, and Folklorama every August both send crowds home late at night.
Transit is the cheapest of all
Winnipeg Transit's 2026 adult cash fare is C$3.45, according to the City's transit fares page, with lower fares on the peggo card. Buses serve the airport from early morning until after 1 a.m. For a solo traveller with light bags in the daytime, it is the best value in the city. With luggage, children or a deadline, it is the slowest.
Leaving a Jets game: three ways home
Game nights are where the choice matters most, so here is how each option plays out when the horn sounds at Canada Life Centre.
By taxi. Cabs gather around the arena, but so does everyone else. The meter rate does not change, so a taxi home to Osborne Village or St. Boniface costs the same as on any other night; the cost is the wait for a free cab, and the time the meter spends in the post-game traffic on Portage Avenue.
By app. Requests spike the moment the game ends, so up-front prices rise and matches take longer. Walking two or three blocks away from the arena before requesting, or waiting twenty minutes over a drink indoors, usually brings the price down. On a cold night, both are less appealing.
By pre-booked car. The evening out and event night package agrees a pickup point a short walk from the doors before the game starts. The chauffeur is already there when you come out, and the price was fixed when you booked. For a group of four to six in a business SUV at US$700, including dinner beforehand and the ride home, the comparison is with two cabs and a long wait, not with one.
None of these is wrong. A couple who live ten minutes away will usually take a cab; a group celebrating a birthday, or a company hosting clients in a suite, usually prefers the car. See sports event transportation.
When a taxi or the bus is the better call
- One or two people, a short trip, no luggage. The meter wins easily.
- Spontaneous plans. Only taxis can be hailed on the street, and an app car can arrive in minutes off-peak.
- A daytime airport arrival with a carry-on. About C$28 on the meter, or C$3.45 on the bus, against US$100 for a pre-booked sedan.
- Budget travel. If the lowest price matters more than timing, transit or a cab is the answer.
When to book a car instead
- Late or winter arrivals at YWG. A chauffeur waiting inside arrivals with a name board, complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, and a warm car close by.
- Groups. Six people with bags need two taxis; a business SUV from US$130 from the airport, or an Executive Sprinter from US$260 for up to twelve, keeps everyone together. Divided between twelve, the Sprinter fare is about US$22 each; that is arithmetic for comparison only, as the price is per vehicle.
- Game and concert nights with dinner first. The evening out and event night package, from US$550 in a business sedan to US$1,100 in an Executive Sprinter, includes the ride home from a pre-agreed pickup point.
- Children who need car seats. Child seats are available on request and fitted before pickup.
- Business travel with a fixed budget. The price is set before you travel and appears on one receipt; corporate accounts are invoiced monthly.
- A multi-stop evening. An hourly car waits outside each stop, from US$110 an hour with a 3-hour minimum. Our Winnipeg limo rental guide covers longer bookings.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi in Winnipeg?
Under the City's maximum fare schedule, a taxi starts at C$3.95, or C$5.20 from the airport, and adds C$0.19 for each additional 100 metres and C$0.19 for each 20 seconds of waiting, GST included. That is about C$1.90 per kilometre. Taxis may charge less than the maximum.
How much is a taxi from Winnipeg airport to downtown?
On distance alone, the 12 km trip works out to about C$28 at the City's maximum airport rate; time in traffic adds to it. That is our arithmetic, not a company quote. An Elly8.net business sedan is US$100, fixed and all-in, with the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals.
Do Winnipeg taxis surge?
No. Taxis charge the meter under a maximum fare schedule, so a busy night does not raise the rate. Rideshare fares are not regulated by the City; they must be agreed in advance in the app, and they rise and fall with demand, which is why a game night can cost far more than a quiet afternoon.
Where do Uber and Lyft pick up at Winnipeg airport?
On Arrivals Level 1 outside Door 1, according to the airport. Taxis wait on Arrivals Level 1 near Door 3. An Elly8.net chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals area with a name board, so there is no curbside queue and no wait for a match.
Can you hail an Uber or a limo on the street in Winnipeg?
No. Only taxis can be hailed from the street. App rides must be requested through the platform, and limousines must be pre-arranged, except that limousines can be hailed at the airport. Elly8.net bookings are made in advance with a fixed price.
When is a pre-booked car worth it in Winnipeg?
For late or winter airport arrivals, groups with luggage, children who need car seats, game nights with dinner first, and business trips that need a fixed price on an invoice. For a short solo ride, a taxi or the bus is usually the better buy.
