How much an Uber costs depends on the trip, the time and the demand at that moment. In the United States, Uber shows riders an upfront price before they request a ride, based on the estimated length and duration of the trip, and the price can rise at busy times through surge pricing. Uber does not publish one fare table for a city, so the honest way to find out what your ride will cost is to enter the exact route in the app close to the time you will travel.
What you can compare are the published alternatives. Some taxi trips have official flat fares, such as the US$70 yellow-cab fare between JFK and Manhattan, and a pre-booked chauffeur has a fixed price agreed in advance, such as Elly8.net's JFK to Midtown Manhattan from US$210 in a Business Sedan. This guide explains how each price is built, so you can tell which one fits your trip.
How is an Uber fare calculated?
In the United States, Uber offers an upfront price for each trip, based on estimated distance and duration. It can include a base fare, a booking fee, tolls and surcharges, and it rises at busy times through surge pricing. It can change if you add stops, change the destination, take a longer route or keep the driver waiting.
That description comes from Uber's own pricing overview, which lists base fares, tolls and surcharges, the booking fee, tips and route-based adjustments among the parts of a rider's payment. Uber also explains that since 2017 the route and the time of day have been factors in UberX prices, and that surge pricing exists to balance supply and demand at the busiest times. In other words, the same trip can cost different amounts on a Tuesday afternoon and a Saturday at 1 a.m.
Why the same Uber ride costs different amounts
Demand. When many people request rides at once, after a concert, at the end of a game, in a storm or at a busy airport bank of arrivals, surge pricing raises the price to bring more drivers to the area. Uber describes this as encouraging riders to wait and drivers to travel to areas of high demand.
Time and route. The upfront price is built on the estimated duration as well as distance, so traffic matters. A trip through a congested city centre at rush hour is priced differently from the same trip at midday.
Changes during the trip. Uber says the upfront price may change if you add stops, update the destination, the route or duration changes significantly, or you pass through a toll that was not in the original price. Wait-time fees can apply if you take time to reach the car.
Product tier. UberX, larger-vehicle tiers and premium tiers such as Uber Black are priced differently. Our comparison of Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur covers the premium end.
Location rules. Some cities and airports add their own surcharges or fees, and airports set where app rides may pick up.
How a taxi fare is built
Taxi fares are usually set by a regulator, and many are published, which makes them easier to check than app prices.
The meter. In New York City, the Taxi and Limousine Commission sets the standard metered fare: a US$3.00 initial charge plus 70 cents per fifth of a mile when moving above 12 mph, or per 60 seconds in slow traffic, plus a 50-cent MTA surcharge, a US$1.00 improvement surcharge and a US$2.50 rush-hour surcharge on weekdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., plus congestion charges in parts of Manhattan, tolls and tip. The TLC also notes there is no extra charge for additional passengers, luggage or paying by card.
Flat fares. Some airport routes have official flat fares. Between JFK and Manhattan, a yellow cab charges a US$70 flat fare plus surcharges, tolls and tip under TLC rules. In Las Vegas, the Nevada Taxicab Authority publishes zone fares from the airport to the Strip of US$22.25 to Zone 1, US$26.25 to Zone 2 and US$30.25 to Zone 3, plus a 3% excise tax and a US$3.00 card fee.
A metered taxi moves with the traffic, not with demand; a flat fare moves with neither, apart from the listed surcharges. That is the main difference from app pricing.
How a pre-booked chauffeur is priced
A pre-booked chauffeur is priced before the trip, per vehicle. With Elly8.net, the fixed all-in price includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and, for airport pickups, meet and greet inside arrivals with flight tracking. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The price does not rise when demand rises, and it does not change if the flight lands late. Airport fares are the same in either direction.
The price is higher than an app ride on a quiet afternoon, and we say so plainly. What it buys is certainty: the car is there, the number is known, and the vehicle is the size you booked.
Three routes, side by side
| Route | Uber or Lyft | Taxi (official source) | Train (official source) | Elly8.net fixed fare, per vehicle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JFK to Midtown Manhattan | Upfront price in the app; varies with demand and traffic | US$70 flat plus surcharges, tolls and tip (NYC TLC) | AirTrain plus subway or rail | US$210 Business Sedan to US$550 Executive Sprinter |
| Harry Reid (LAS) to the Las Vegas Strip | Upfront price; pickups in the parking garages | US$22.25 to US$30.25 by zone, plus 3% tax and US$3.00 card fee | Public bus | US$125 Business Sedan to US$325 Sprinter |
| Toronto Pearson to downtown | Upfront price; varies with demand | Regulated airport taxi fare by destination | UP Express C$12.35 adult single | US$155 Business Sedan to US$405 Sprinter |
The UP Express fare is set by the train operator. Toronto rides run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs; in other cities, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk.
Outside North America: what changes abroad
Travellers from the United States and Canada often assume the app works the same way everywhere. The pricing logic is similar, but the local alternatives differ, and some are published in detail.
Geneva. Genève Aéroport lists flat taxi fares from the airport: 25 Swiss francs for the area close to the airport, 35 to the international organisations, 50 to the city centre's right bank and 60 to the left bank. Other destinations are charged on the regulated price per kilometre.
Lyon. Lyon Aéroport publishes indicative taxi fares with a day rate and a night rate, the night rate applying from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and on Sundays and public holidays: about 67 euros by day and 90 euros at night to Lyon Part-Dieu, for example.
Paris and London. Elly8.net publishes fixed fares such as Charles de Gaulle to the 8th arrondissement from US$170 in a Business Sedan, and Heathrow to Mayfair from US$195. See the Paris chauffeur and London car service price lists.
The lesson is the same as at home: check the official taxi fare for your route, check the app close to the time, and compare both with a fixed price that includes the tip.
A night out, priced three ways
Take a group of six in New York going to dinner and a show, with a ride home after midnight. With apps, that is two cars each way, four rides in total, with the late return priced at whatever demand is doing when the theatres empty. With taxis, it is two cabs each way on the meter, assuming you find two at once. With a chauffeur, the evening out and event night package is five hours in one Business SUV for US$675, with the vehicle waiting nearby. Which is cheaper depends on the night; which is predictable does not.
How to estimate your own Uber fare
- Use the app with the exact addresses. Enter the real pickup and destination, not the neighbourhood.
- Check at the time you will travel. A price checked at noon says little about a ride at 6 p.m. or after a concert.
- Count the vehicles. If the group or the luggage needs two cars, double it, and check the vehicle size the app offers before you request.
- Add the extras. Tolls not in the upfront price, wait-time fees and the tip all sit on top.
- Compare with the published alternatives. Look up the official taxi flat fare or train fare for your route, and the fixed chauffeur price.
Groups: one vehicle or several
Group maths often decides the question. Four adults with four large suitcases rarely fit in one standard car, so the realistic app comparison is two cars, or one larger-vehicle tier at a higher price. A Business SUV or Van on an Elly8.net price list takes six passengers and six bags in one vehicle; an Executive Sprinter takes up to twelve passengers and twelve bags. JFK to Midtown in a Business SUV costs US$275, and US$550 in a Sprinter. Divided by twelve guests, purely as arithmetic for comparison, a Sprinter works out to under US$46 each, though Elly8.net charges per vehicle, never per person.
When an Uber, a taxi or the train is the smarter call
One person, light luggage, quiet time of day. An app ride or a taxi is usually the cheapest door-to-door option. At JFK, the flat yellow-cab fare is good value for one or two people.
Near the airport train. For a solo traveller staying near Union Station in Toronto, the UP Express at C$12.35 is hard to beat.
Short hops in town. Between a hotel and a restaurant a mile away, an app or a taxi makes sense; a chauffeur is overkill.
Flexible plans. If you can wait out a surge, waiting is free.
When a pre-booked chauffeur wins
Late arrivals and busy times. After midnight, during storms and when an arena empties, app prices can rise and taxi lines lengthen. A fixed price does not move.
Groups and heavy bags. One vehicle, every bag, one price.
Children. Child seats on request, fitted before pickup.
A schedule that matters. Meetings, flights, weddings and events where arriving on time is the point. Companies book these on accounts with monthly invoicing; see executive transportation.
Airports with remote app pickups. At JFK, app pickups for Terminals 5 and 7 have temporarily moved to the Howard Beach AirTrain Station during construction, according to the airport. A meet and greet inside the terminal avoids the walk and the train. Our guide to transportation from the airport walks through the arrival.
What the fixed price includes, and what it does not
Comparisons only work when the extras are counted on both sides. On an Elly8.net booking, the fixed price includes the standard gratuity; with an app or a taxi, the tip is added on top. Tolls are billed at cost on all three. Airport fees and surcharges are part of the taxi and app price where they apply. How booking a fixed price works
- Pickup and drop-off. Enter the addresses, or the airport and your flight number.
- Vehicle. Choose the class by passengers and bags.
- Reserve. Press Reserve now on a city's price list, or use the web booker for any address. The price is fixed before you pay, and confirmation arrives by email.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% applies at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card. Frequently asked questions
How much is an Uber ride?
It depends on the trip and the moment. In the United States, Uber shows an upfront price before you request, based on estimated distance and duration, and prices rise during busy times through surge pricing. Enter your exact route in the app close to your travel time for a realistic figure.
Why is my Uber more expensive than usual?
Usually because demand is high: after events, in bad weather, at rush hour or when many flights land together. Surge pricing raises prices to bring drivers to busy areas. Route changes, added stops, unexpected tolls and wait-time fees can also change the final price.
Is a taxi cheaper than an Uber?
Sometimes. Taxi fares are set by regulators and many are published, such as New York's US$70 JFK to Manhattan flat fare plus surcharges, tolls and tip. App prices move with demand, so a taxi can be cheaper at busy times and more expensive at quiet ones.
Is a pre-booked car service more expensive than an Uber?
For one person at a quiet time, usually yes. For groups, heavy luggage, late arrivals and busy event nights, a fixed per-vehicle price can be competitive, because it does not rise with demand and one larger vehicle replaces two app cars. Elly8.net's price also includes the standard gratuity.
Does the Elly8.net price change with traffic or demand?
No. The fixed all-in price is agreed before you pay and does not rise with demand or traffic. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Airport fares are the same in either direction. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary.
Is a tip added on top of a chauffeur price?
On Elly8.net bookings no extra tip is expected, because standard gratuity is already included in the fare. Anything extra for exceptional help is your choice. With app rides and taxis, the tip is usually added on top of the fare.
