Transportation from the airport: what happens between landing and the car door

The ride is the easy part of airport transportation. The hard part is the twenty minutes between the aircraft door and the car. Here is how that stretch works with a pre-booked chauffeur, a taxi, an app ride or the train.

Transportation from the airport comes down to four choices: a pre-booked car with a chauffeur who meets you inside, a taxi from the official rank, an app ride from a designated pickup zone, or the airport train or bus. Each works well for some trips. What separates them is not the drive itself but the minutes after you land: where you walk, how long you wait, whether your bags fit, and whether the price moves while you are still at the baggage belt.

This guide walks through an arrival step by step, with real rules from the airports and regulators that publish them, and fixed Elly8.net examples such as JFK to Midtown Manhattan from US$210 or Toronto Pearson to downtown from US$155 per vehicle. It also says plainly when the train or the taxi line is the better choice.

What happens when a chauffeur picks you up at the airport?

The chauffeur tracks your flight from the number you give at booking, waits inside arrivals with a name board after you clear baggage claim or customs, and helps with the bags. With Elly8.net, waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, and the fixed price per vehicle stays the same if the flight is early or late.

That is the whole point of a pre-booked airport transfer: the variables move to the desk, not to you. A delayed flight, a long immigration queue or a slow oversize belt changes the chauffeur's afternoon, not your bill.

See prices and reserve

Step 1: before you fly

Three details make an arrival smooth, and all three go into the booking.

The flight number. Not the departure time, the flight number. It lets the chauffeur follow the actual landing, including a diversion or an early arrival on a tailwind. If you are connecting, give the final flight into the city.

The real luggage count. Count suitcases, carry-ons you will not hold on your lap, golf bags, ski bags, strollers and car seats. Luggage, not passengers, is what decides the vehicle class most often.

The destination as an address. "Downtown" or "the hotel" is not enough. Give the hotel name and street, or the full residential address with any gate code or access note.

Child seats are available on request: give each child's age and the seats are fitted before pickup.

Step 2: landing and flight tracking

When the aircraft lands, the chauffeur already knows. Flight tracking covers early arrivals, which are common on long-haul flights with favourable winds, as well as delays. If a connection is missed and you are rebooked, send the new flight number to the 24/7 desk and the pickup moves with you.

International arrivals add immigration and customs. Domestic arrivals in North America usually reach baggage claim within minutes of the gate, so the chauffeur plans the meeting time differently. Either way, waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary; you do not need to rush the passport queue.

Step 3: where the driver meets you

This is where the four options really differ.

Pre-booked chauffeur. With a meet and greet, the chauffeur stands in the arrivals area with a name board, usually at baggage claim for domestic flights and outside the customs exit for international ones, then walks with you to the car in the airport's permitted pickup area. You never search a kerb.

Taxi. Taxis load at official ranks outside the terminal. At Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, for example, the airport says taxis wait outside baggage claim on the east side of Terminal 1 and on Level Zero at Terminal 3.

App rides. Uber and Lyft use designated pickup zones that are often a walk from the door. At Boston Logan, Massport tells passengers to request a ride only after collecting their luggage and to follow the Ride App signs; Terminal A pickups are in the Central Parking Garage and Terminal B pickups are on Level 2 of the Terminal B garage. At Harry Reid, app pickups are in the parking garages. At JFK, the airport's ride-share page notes that pickups for Terminals 5 and 7 have temporarily moved to the Howard Beach AirTrain Station during construction, so the app ride starts with a train ride.

Train or bus. You walk to the station, which may itself be a shuttle or an AirTrain ride from the terminal. Toronto's UP Express, for instance, leaves from Pearson Station at Terminal 1.

Step 4: waiting, and what it costs

Waiting is the quiet cost of airport transportation. With an app, the wait is for a match and then for the car to reach the pickup zone, and the price shown is the price at the moment you request. With a taxi, the wait is the length of the rank queue, which can be long when several wide-body flights land together. With the train, the wait is the timetable.

With a pre-booked chauffeur, the car is already there. Elly8.net's waiting rule is simple: waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, and waiting beyond the included time, for example a stop at the hotel to drop bags and then a second destination, is billed at cost and shown on the receipt. If your plan includes stops, book a multi-stop trip or an hourly chauffeur instead, so the time is priced in advance.

Step 5: luggage, matched to the vehicle

Vehicle classPassengersBagsTypical airport use
Business Sedan32One or two travellers with one checked bag each
First Class Sedan32Executives and VIP arrivals travelling light
Business SUV or Van66Families, golf or ski bags, three travellers with full luggage
First Class SUV66The same space in a more premium vehicle
Executive Sprinter1212Teams, wedding parties, two families together

The allowances above are from the Elly8.net fleet table; see the fleet for the models in each class. The common mistake is booking by headcount. Two people with two large suitcases, two carry-ons and a golf bag have outgrown a sedan. Taxis have the same physics: a standard cab will not take five large cases, and in New York the Taxi and Limousine Commission notes that there is no extra charge for passengers or luggage, but the boot is still the size it is. A group that needs two taxis or two app rides often costs more than one van.

Step 6: flat fare, meter or fixed price

Flat fares. Some routes have official flat taxi fares. In New York, a yellow cab between JFK and Manhattan is a US$70 flat fare under TLC rules, plus surcharges, tolls and tip. In Las Vegas, the Nevada Taxicab Authority publishes zone fares from the airport to the Strip of US$22.25, US$26.25 and US$30.25, plus a 3% excise tax and a US$3.00 card fee.

The meter. Most other taxi trips are metered. In New York the standard meter starts at US$3.00 and adds 70 cents per fifth of a mile, or per minute in slow traffic, plus surcharges, so traffic changes the final number.

App pricing. Rideshare apps show an upfront price based on the estimated length and duration of the trip, and the price rises with demand at busy times.

Fixed all-in price. An Elly8.net airport transfer is one price per vehicle, agreed before you fly, including the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost. The same fare applies in either direction, to or from the airport.

Boston Logan to Back BayUS$130 sedan to US$340 SprinterTaxi or app ride from the official zones (Massport)

The UP Express fare is set by the train operator; Toronto rides run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs.

Step 7: the ride and the drop-off

Once the bags are in, the rest should be uneventful. The chauffeur confirms the address, and if your plans have changed since booking, this is the moment to say so: a second stop, a change of hotel or a detour to an office is easier to arrange before the car leaves the airport than halfway into town. Anything that adds time beyond the included allowance is billed at cost, and the chauffeur will tell you if a request does.

At the destination, the chauffeur unloads at the hotel entrance or the front door, not at the nearest legal kerb a block away, wherever local rules allow. Nothing changes hands: the fare was paid when you reserved, and the standard gratuity is already included. If you need a receipt for expenses, it arrives by email. For a company trip billed on an account, the ride appears on the monthly invoice instead.

When the train or the taxi is the better choice

Be honest about the trip. If you are one person with a carry-on, landing in the middle of the day and staying near the station, the airport train is usually the smartest option: the UP Express in Toronto costs C$12.35 for an adult single. If you are two people with light bags arriving at a quiet hour, the taxi rank is fine, and the flat fares in New York and Las Vegas are good value. If your plans are flexible and demand is low, an app ride works.

When a pre-booked chauffeur wins

Late arrivals. After midnight, trains thin out, taxi ranks shorten and app prices can rise. A car already waiting is the calm answer.

Groups and luggage. One van instead of two taxis, with every bag in one place.

Children. Child seats fitted before you land.

Meetings and events. A fixed time and a fixed price for a traveller who has to be somewhere. Companies book these on a corporate account with monthly invoicing; our guide to executive transportation covers what travel managers check.

First visits. No kerb rules to learn, no app zone to find.

For the price side of these decisions, read How much is an Uber? and chauffeur hire cost explained. Our comparisons of chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs airport shuttle set out the trade-offs in more detail.

Going to the airport: the same rules in reverse

For departures, the chauffeur collects you at the door at a time worked back from your flight: the drive, a margin for traffic at that hour, and your airline's recommended check-in time. The fare is the same fixed price as the arrival. Tell the desk your terminal and airline, and whether you have oversize bags to check. A round trip booked together, such as JFK car service both ways from US$400 in a Business Sedan, settles the return before you land.

Airports beyond the big hubs

Many travellers fly into a secondary or private airport: Teterboro for New York, Van Nuys for Los Angeles, Le Bourget for Paris. The meeting works differently at a private terminal, where the chauffeur usually waits at the FBO door or planeside where the operator allows. See private jet and FBO transfers. Published examples include Las Vegas airport transfers from Harry Reid, Henderson Executive or North Las Vegas, Heathrow to Mayfair from US$195 in a Business Sedan, and Toronto Pearson car service.

In every city except Toronto and the GTA, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk. Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs.

Frequently asked questions

Where will my driver meet me at the airport?

Inside the arrivals area with a name board: usually at baggage claim after a domestic flight and outside the customs exit after an international one. The chauffeur then walks you to the car in the airport's permitted pickup area. Private terminals and FBOs have their own arrangements, confirmed when you book.

What if my flight is delayed?

Nothing changes for you. The chauffeur tracks the flight number, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. If you miss a connection and are rebooked, message the 24/7 desk with the new flight number and the pickup moves to the new arrival.

How much luggage fits in each vehicle?

From the Elly8.net fleet table: a Business Sedan or First Class Sedan takes three passengers and two bags; a Business SUV or First Class SUV takes six passengers and six bags; an Executive Sprinter takes up to twelve passengers and twelve bags. Book by bags, not only by people.

Is the price per person?

No. Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, not per person, and include the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. The same fixed fare applies to and from the airport. A Sprinter for twelve costs the same whether ten or twelve people travel.

Is a taxi cheaper than a car service from the airport?

Often, for one or two people with light bags. New York's JFK yellow cab flat fare is US$70 plus surcharges, tolls and tip, and Las Vegas zone fares start at US$22.25. A fixed car service is better value for groups, families with child seats, late arrivals and anyone who needs a guaranteed time.

How far ahead should I book?

As soon as your flight is confirmed, and earlier for holidays and big events. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, so booking early costs nothing if plans change in good time. For a quick quote on any address, use the web booker.
