Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) to South Lake Tahoe is about 58 mi (93 km), roughly 83 minutes on a clear road, over the Carson Range on mountain highways. A private car with Elly8.net turns it into one fixed, all-in fare from US$385 in a Business Sedan to US$1,005 in an Executive Sprinter, with the chauffeur meeting you inside the terminal and the flight tracked before you land.
The distance is not the hard part. The hard part is that the same 58 miles behave differently in July and in a January storm, and that almost everyone arriving for Tahoe has more luggage than a city trip. This guide follows the arrival step by step, and says where the shuttle, a rental car or an app ride is the better choice.

Rides in Lake Tahoe are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Step 1: what to put in the booking
A Tahoe transfer goes smoothly when the details are settled before you fly. Add:
- Airline and flight number, so the flight is tracked.
- The exact lodging address. South Lake Tahoe, Stateline and the North Shore are different drives, and many vacation rentals are on steep lanes. Add gate codes and any access notes.
- Ski and snowboard bags, boot bags and suitcases. This decides the vehicle more than the passenger count does.
- Child seats, with each child's age and weight. They are available on request and fitted before pickup.
Step 2: landing at RNO and meeting the chauffeur
RNO is a compact airport. According to its ground transportation page, it handles more than 130 arrivals and departures a day across 10 airlines and more than 20 nonstop destinations, and it sits in the heart of Reno, within 15 minutes of the major Reno hotels.
Your chauffeur meets you inside the terminal with a name board, usually at baggage claim, and waits with you for checked ski bags. You then walk out together. The airport states that all commercial pickups, including pre-arranged cars, taxis and shuttles, are outside baggage claim Door D in the ground transportation loop. App rides use the same lot: you follow the crosswalk to the far end, where there is signage and a weather shelter. With a pre-booked car you skip the search; the chauffeur walks you to the vehicle. Our airport meet and greet page explains the service.
Step 3: delays, winter hubs and waiting time
If your connection runs through a hub with winter weather, a late arrival is always possible. Because the flight is tracked, the chauffeur works to your actual landing time, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing, so a late inbound flight does not change the fixed fare within the included time. If waiting goes beyond that, it is billed at cost, and the desk tells you before it applies. If you are rebooked onto a later flight, send the new flight number and the pickup moves.
Step 4: matching the vehicle to ski bags
Ski equipment is bulky, and it is the most common reason a Tahoe pickup needs a bigger car than expected. A rough guide:
- Two people, two suitcases, no skis: a Business Sedan is fine in summer.
- Two to four people with ski or snowboard bags: a Business SUV or First Class SUV, which carry up to 6 passengers and 6 standard bags. Long ski bags take more space than suitcases, so count them separately.
- A family of five or six with gear: a First Class SUV, or an Executive Sprinter if everyone has skis.
- A ski group of seven to twelve: the Executive Sprinter keeps everyone and the equipment in one vehicle. See Sprinter van with driver.
In winter, choose an SUV or the Sprinter whatever the luggage, for the road conditions described below. The fleet page lists each class.
Step 5: the drive from Reno to the lake
There are three main ways up from RNO, and the chauffeur chooses on the day from road reports and the weather:
- US-395 south, then US-50 over Spooner Summit. The usual route to South Lake Tahoe runs south past Carson City, about 28 mi (45 km) and 38 minutes from the airport on a clear road, then climbs west on US-50 and drops to the lake at Zephyr Cove and Stateline.
- Kingsbury Grade. NV-207 climbs straight from the Carson Valley to Stateline, an alternative to US-50.
- Mount Rose Highway. The shorter climb for the North Shore, toward Incline Village.
For North Shore stays, these are clear-road routing figures from RNO:
| From RNO to | Distance | Clear-road drive | How it is priced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incline Village | about 32 mi (52 km) | about 53 min | Web booker |
| Northstar | about 43 mi (69 km) | about 57 min | Web booker |
| Palisades Tahoe | about 49 mi (78 km) | about 1 h 5 min | Web booker |
| Tahoe City | about 52 mi (83 km) | about 1 h 8 min | Web booker |
| South Lake Tahoe | about 58 mi (93 km) | about 1 h 23 min | Price list, from US$385 |
In winter, these are mountain roads with chain controls. On the California side, Caltrans publishes three levels, R1, R2 and R3, on its chain controls page; R3 requires chains or traction devices on every vehicle, with no exceptions. Nevada posts its conditions on NDOT's nvroads.com. The chauffeur handles chain controls, and the fixed fare does not change with the weather. In a heavy storm, a pass can close for hours; the desk watches the forecast and will contact you if your timing looks at risk.
Step 6: arriving at the lodge
The last mile at Tahoe can be the slowest. Hotels around Heavenly Village and the Stateline casino resorts have proper driveways and porters. Vacation rentals are different: steep driveways, snowbanks, narrow lanes and gates. Send the exact address and any access notes, and the chauffeur plans the approach and helps you to the door with the bags. If you are skiing the next morning, the Heavenly base areas in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline are close by, and an hourly chauffeur, from US$125 an hour in a Business SUV with a three-hour minimum, covers a resort day.
Summer arrivals are simpler but have their own rhythm. July and August weekends bring heavy traffic around Stateline and the South Shore beaches, and Friday afternoon arrivals often meet it on US-50. If you can choose, a midday landing usually gives the easiest run up the hill.
Flat rate or metered: the other ways up the hill
RNO lists several alternatives, and they suit different travellers:
- Shared shuttles. The airport lists a North Shore shuttle, which must be booked 24 hours in advance and boards outside Door D, and a South Shore shuttle with a counter near Door B. They charge per seat on a set timetable and are the lowest-cost option for one traveller.
- Taxis. Several taxi companies wait outside Door D. A meter running for an hour or more up a mountain road is rarely good value.
- App rides. They work well within Reno; long mountain runs, late evenings and winter weather limit availability.
- A rental car. Freedom in summer; in winter, the chains are your job.
Our Reno to Lake Tahoe comparison sets these side by side, and chauffeur vs airport shuttle covers the general trade-offs. The pre-booked car wins for winter arrivals, families with gear, groups who want one vehicle and anyone landing late.
Going home: the trip back to RNO
The fare back to the airport is the same fixed price. The airport states that commercial drop-offs can be along the outer kerb of the ticketing hall or in the ground transportation loop near Door D. In winter, leave more time than the clear-road figure suggests: a storm overnight can mean chain controls in the morning. The desk suggests a pickup time when you book, with a buffer for the season. Frequently asked questions
How much is a car from Reno airport to South Lake Tahoe?
The fixed fare is US$385 in a Business Sedan, US$505 in a Business SUV, US$620 in a First Class SUV, US$675 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,005 in an Executive Sprinter. Round trips start at US$735. Fares are per vehicle and all-in; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Where does the chauffeur meet arrivals at Reno airport?
Inside the terminal, usually at baggage claim, with a name board. The chauffeur waits with you for checked ski bags and walks you to the car. All commercial pickups at RNO use the ground transportation loop outside baggage claim Door D.
How long is the drive from RNO to Lake Tahoe?
About 58 mi (93 km) and 83 minutes on a clear road to South Lake Tahoe, and about 53 minutes to Incline Village on the North Shore. In winter, chain controls and storms can add a lot of time, and passes occasionally close. The fixed fare does not change with conditions.
Which vehicle is best in winter?
A Business SUV, First Class SUV or Executive Sprinter. They carry ski bags and are the sensible choice on mountain roads with chain controls. Count ski and snowboard bags separately from suitcases when you book, so the right vehicle is assigned.
Is the shuttle cheaper than a private car?
For one traveller, yes: shuttles charge per seat on a set timetable. For a family or group, a private car priced per vehicle can compare well, especially with ski bags, child seats or a late arrival. The airport lists the North Shore shuttle as needing a booking 24 hours ahead.
What happens if a storm closes the pass?
The desk watches road reports and will contact you if the forecast threatens your pickup. If a pass closes, the chauffeur waits for it to reopen or takes an open route where possible. The fixed fare does not change; extended waiting is billed at cost.
