Toronto to Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is about 106 miles (171 km) by road from downtown Toronto, roughly 2 hours 10 minutes on a clear road before you add the border crossing at Niagara. A private car takes you from your door to the BUF departures curb in one vehicle, with the bags loaded once, and Elly8.net quotes a fixed, all-in price for the vehicle in the web booker before you pay.
Whether the trip is worth it depends on the arithmetic of your flight. For many families and groups flying to US cities, a BUF departure saves on airfare and, for some routes, means a nonstop where Pearson needs a connection. For one traveller with a short business trip, flying from Pearson is often simpler. Elly8.net publishes both sides: downtown Toronto to Toronto Pearson (YYZ) starts at US$155 in a business sedan, and the Toronto to BUF run is quoted for your exact address.
How long does it take to get from Toronto to Buffalo Airport?
About 2 hours 10 minutes of driving from downtown Toronto on a clear road, 106 miles (171 km), plus the border. Border waits at the Niagara bridges range from no delay to long queues at peak times, so the desk usually plans a pickup about 5 hours before a domestic flight from BUF.
The drive itself is predictable: the Gardiner Expressway and the Queen Elizabeth Way around the western end of Lake Ontario, through Hamilton and St. Catharines to Niagara, then across the river and east to Cheektowaga, where BUF sits at 4200 Genesee Street. From the Pearson area the distance is similar, about 102 miles (164 km). The unknown is the bridge. That is why we plan around it rather than around the map.

The timeline: from your door to the departures curb
Here is how the desk builds a typical schedule for a 10:00 am domestic flight from BUF, on a weekday:
| Time | What happens | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 5:00 am | Pickup at home or hotel in Toronto | bags and passports checked at the door |
| 5:15 to 6:15 am | QEW through Hamilton and St. Catharines | early start avoids Toronto and Hamilton rush hour |
| about 6:30 am | Arrive at the chosen Niagara crossing | chauffeur picks the bridge with the lighter queue |
| 6:30 to 7:15 am | US border inspection | can be minutes or much longer |
| about 7:45 am | Arrive at BUF departures | single terminal, one curb |
| 7:45 to 10:00 am | Check-in, bag drop, security | about two hours before a domestic departure |
Five hours from door to departure sounds like a lot, and on a quiet morning you will be early. The point is that a long border queue or a slow QEW does not cost you the flight. For international departures from BUF, add more time at the airport end, following your airline's guidance.
Two airport details worth knowing: according to the airport's FAQ, the terminal is open around the clock but the TSA security checkpoint closes at 9:00 pm daily, so very late evening departures need a correspondingly early arrival. And BUF is a single terminal, so there is only one departures curb.
Crossing the border by car
There are four Niagara River crossings near Buffalo. The Peace Bridge runs between Fort Erie and Buffalo and is the most direct route to the airport side of the city. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission runs the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, the Rainbow Bridge and the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, which is for NEXUS members only. All of them publish current traffic, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection posts border wait times for every port. The chauffeur checks them before the crossing and chooses the shorter queue.
Tolls. The Peace Bridge Authority says tolls on the bridge are collected Canada-bound only, so the trip to BUF over the Peace Bridge has no bridge toll; on the way home it does. Any tolls on the trip are billed at cost.
Documents. Everyone in the car needs to be ready to present a document to the US officer, including children. According to CBP's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page, Canadian citizens entering by land can present a valid passport, an Enhanced Driver's Licence or a trusted traveller card such as NEXUS. You will need your passport for the flight anyway if you are flying on beyond the US. Permanent residents and travellers of other nationalities should check what CBP requires for their passport, and any visa or authorisation, before booking.
At the booth. Have documents in hand before the car reaches the officer, keep the windows down when asked, and answer for yourself. The chauffeur does not answer on your behalf. Declare anything you are asked about; if you are carrying food, cannabis or large sums of money, check the rules first, because the border is not the place to find out.
Coming home: BUF to Toronto
The return trip works in reverse, and it is where a pre-booked car makes the most difference. You land at BUF, possibly late, after a long day. Without a booking, you would be looking for a taxi or an app ride willing to cross the border, or walking to a parking garage where your own car has been sitting for a week.
With a booking, the desk tracks your flight, the chauffeur meets you in BUF's baggage claim with a name board, and complimentary waiting runs from the tracked landing. The airport lists a page of Canadian ground transportation providers, which tells you how common this trip is. On the Canadian side, the Canada Border Services Agency inspects you; the Government of Canada page on what you can bring home sets out exemptions and limits, so check it before you shop in the US. Our guide to the Buffalo airport limo meet and greet covers the arrival side at BUF in more detail.
What it costs, and how it compares with flying from Pearson
The Toronto to BUF route is not on a published price list, because the price depends on your exact pickup address, the vehicle and, for a round trip, the gap between the two dates. The web booker quotes a fixed, all-in price for the vehicle: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet on the return. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
The fair comparison is not "car vs nothing" but "BUF by car vs Pearson". Here are the fixed Toronto fares to set against the BUF quote:
| Vehicle | Downtown Toronto to Pearson (YYZ) | Round trip, downtown and YYZ | Toronto hourly rate | Toronto to BUF |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan, up to 3 | US$155 | US$295 | US$110 | fixed quote in the booker |
| Business SUV, up to 6 | US$205 | US$390 | US$140 | fixed quote in the booker |
| Executive Sprinter, up to 12 | US$405 | US$770 | US$220 | fixed quote in the booker |
When BUF makes sense. A family of five flying to Florida in March, where the airfare difference across five tickets is large and a business SUV carries everyone and the bags. A group of ten going to a wedding in a US city, where one Executive Sprinter replaces three cars and a week of parking. A route where BUF has a nonstop and Pearson does not.
When Pearson makes sense. One traveller on a short business trip, where the extra drive and border time cost more than the fare saved. Anyone without a passport, Enhanced Driver's Licence or NEXUS card. Travellers who would rather clear US preclearance at Pearson than at a land border, which, for flights to the US from Pearson, is how it works.
Winter. Lake-effect snow can slow the QEW through Niagara and the roads around BUF from November to March. On a snow day the desk moves the pickup earlier rather than gambling on the forecast, and the fixed price does not change. Our Toronto car service page has the full Toronto fare list for comparison.
Prices are per vehicle, never per person. If you do divide a fare by the number of travellers to compare it with airfare savings, treat it as arithmetic for comparison only.
Who runs the car
Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs, so a pickup in Toronto is our own car and chauffeur. Rides that start in Buffalo are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Either way, you deal with one desk and one confirmation. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.
Booking tips for a BUF flight
- Book the round trip together if you know the return flight; the desk schedules both legs and tracks the return.
- Count bags generously. A business sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 bags; a business SUV up to 6 and 6; an Executive Sprinter up to 12 and 12. Ski bags and car seats push you up a class. See the fleet.
- Add child seats in the booking; they are available on request.
- Put every passenger's document type in the notes if anyone is not a Canadian or US citizen, so the desk can flag it before the day.
- Avoid the Friday afternoon and holiday Monday peaks at the bridges when you can choose your flight.
