At Vancouver International Airport (YVR) there are four ways into the city: a taxi from the stand, Uber or Lyft from the ride-app area, the Canada Line train, and a pre-booked car. Each is the right answer for somebody. A solo traveller with a carry-on heading near a SkyTrain station should take the train; a couple going downtown at an ordinary hour will do well with a taxi on the C$46 zone fare; a family with car seats, a group with luggage or a late arrival is better served by a pre-booked car, from US$110 in a Business Sedan.
This guide sets out how each option works at YVR and then gives a verdict for nine common situations, from a business traveller on a tight schedule to eleven people heading for an Alaska cruise. Taxi, train and ride-app figures are in Canadian dollars; Elly8.net prices are in US dollars, fixed, all-in and per vehicle.
Should I take a taxi, Uber or a private car from YVR?
Take the Canada Line if you travel light and stay near a station. Take a taxi for one to three people at an ordinary hour: the zone fare to downtown is C$46 before the tip. Use Uber off-peak if the app price beats the taxi. Book a private car for families, groups, luggage, late flights and fixed schedules.
The detail behind each verdict is below. Every figure comes from YVR, TransLink or British Columbia's Passenger Transportation Board, linked where it appears.

The four options at a glance
| Option | Where at YVR | Price to downtown | Changes with demand | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canada Line | Station between the terminals | Regular fare plus C$6.50 AddFare | No | Solo, light bags, near a station |
| Taxi | Stands, International and Domestic Arrivals Level 2 | C$46 zone fare, tip extra | No | 1 to 3 people, ordinary hours |
| Uber or Lyft | Ride-app areas, Arrivals Level 2 and South Terminal | Up-front, varies | Yes | Off-peak, light bags |
| Elly8.net private car | Inside arrivals, name board | US$110 Business Sedan, fixed | No | Families, groups, late flights, schedules |
The taxi. YVR's taxi page says taxis are first come, first served from stands on International Arrivals Level 2 and Domestic Arrivals Level 2, served by nearly 20 licensed operators, and that drivers may not pick up outside the stands. Trips from YVR to set zones in Vancouver and Richmond have flat fares that include a C$4 passenger load charge; trips beyond the zones run on the meter with the C$4 added. Taxis take cash, credit and debit, and there are no luggage charges.
Uber and Lyft. YVR's rideshare page names Lyft and Uber as the authorized ride-app providers, with pickups on International Arrivals Level 2, Domestic Arrivals Level 2 and the South Terminal. Drivers wait in a dedicated area nearby, so the airport asks you to collect bags before requesting. Prices vary with provider, time of day and location.
The Canada Line. TransLink's fares page lists C$3.50 for one zone and C$5.10 for two zones at cash rates, with trips after 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, at weekends and on holidays charged as one zone, and a C$6.50 AddFare for journeys starting at YVR. TransLink puts the ride from YVR to Waterfront at about 25 minutes.
A private car. With Elly8.net the chauffeur tracks the flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board and walks you to the vehicle. YVR to downtown Vancouver is US$110 in a Business Sedan, US$145 in a Business SUV and US$290 in an Executive Sprinter, the same in either direction.
Nine situations, nine verdicts
1. A solo traveller with a carry-on, staying near Waterfront or Yaletown
Verdict: the Canada Line. It takes about 25 minutes to Waterfront and is the cheapest option by a wide margin. The fare plus the AddFare is a small fraction of any car, and the stations are a short walk from many downtown hotels. A taxi is the fallback if it is raining hard and the hotel is several blocks from a station.
2. A couple going downtown in the afternoon
Verdict: a taxi on the zone fare. C$46 to the Canada Place and downtown zone, plus the tip, is predictable and simple. Uber may be cheaper at a quiet moment; check the app price against C$46 before you request.
3. A business traveller with a meeting an hour after landing
Verdict: a private car. A named chauffeur inside arrivals, flight tracking and no queue at the stand protect the schedule, and a fixed fare is easy to expense. A First Class Sedan, US$195 from YVR to downtown, gives a quiet rear seat for a call. See executive car service.
4. A family of four with two car seats and four suitcases
Verdict: a private car. Child seats are available on request and fitted before pickup, and a Business SUV at US$145 takes six passengers and six bags. A standard taxi may not fit four suitcases, and YVR notes that passengers may need a larger vehicle if luggage exceeds a cab's capacity.
5. Nine friends arriving together for a weekend
Verdict: an Executive Sprinter. Three taxis or three app rides mean three queues and three arrivals; one Sprinter at US$290 carries twelve people and twelve bags. On price alone several taxis can come out lower; the Sprinter wins on keeping the group and luggage together. Our Vancouver Sprinter van rental guide explains the options.
6. A cruise passenger going to Canada Place
Verdict: depends on the luggage. Light travellers can take the train to Waterfront, close to the terminal. Families and groups with a week of cruise bags are better in a Business SUV or a Sprinter; cruise terminal transfers are quoted in the web booker. See cruise port transfers.
7. A late-night arrival after the last train
Verdict: a taxi or a private car. The taxi stands serve arriving flights, and the zone fare is the same at night. If you land very late, are travelling with children or are going beyond the zones, a pre-booked car means someone is waiting inside arrivals however late the flight is. Our Vancouver airport limo guide walks through the pickup.
8. An airport hotel in Richmond
Verdict: a taxi. The Richmond zone fares are the lowest on the YVR map: C$24 on Sea Island and C$25 to North Richmond. A pre-booked car makes sense here only for groups or if you need a child seat.
9. Going straight to Whistler or the North Shore
Verdict: a private car. Whistler and the North Shore are outside the taxi zones, so a taxi runs on the meter plus the C$4 load charge, and the Whistler drive is about two hours from Vancouver. One-way Whistler transfers are on the Whistler car service page, and British Columbia's winter tire rules apply on signed highways from October 1 to April 30.
Accessibility and travelling with a service animal
YVR's taxi page says its taxi operators can accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids, and that the airport's Ground Transportation team can help arrange a suitable taxi. It also notes that certified service animals are welcomed on board under the BC Human Rights Code, while non-service animals are at the driver's discretion. For a pre-booked car, tell the desk about wheelchairs, walkers or a service animal when booking, so the right vehicle is confirmed and the chauffeur can bring it to an accessible door. A Business SUV or an Executive Sprinter is usually easier to enter than a sedan.
Onward trips: Victoria, Seattle and beyond
Some YVR arrivals are only passing through Vancouver. For Vancouver Island, Elly8.net has fixed prices in Victoria, and for trips south across the border, Seattle and Portland have their own price lists. A long transfer like these is quoted in the web booker from YVR, with the same flight tracking and meet and greet as a downtown run. A taxi or ride app is rarely the practical choice for a cross-border or ferry connection with luggage, and the border crossing requires every passenger to carry the right documents.
The return trip is different
The comparison changes on the way back to the airport. Taxis to YVR run on the meter rather than a zone fare, and ride-app prices to the airport vary with demand like any other trip. Every Elly8.net airport fare is the same fixed price in either direction, so downtown to YVR is US$110 in a Business Sedan, and a round trip booked together starts at US$210. For an early-morning flight, a pre-booked car also removes the question of whether a cab or an app ride will be available at 5 a.m.
Money, surge and the rules behind the prices
Two rules explain most of the differences. The Passenger Transportation Board's taxi rates page says taxis may not charge variable rates that respond to demand, so the zone fare and the meter stay the same on the busiest night. Its ride-hail rates page describes dynamic pricing for Uber and Lyft above a minimum fare, C$4.43 including GST in the Lower Mainland and Whistler region from August 18, 2026. That is why a taxi is often the better buy when many flights land at once, and an app can be the better buy at a quiet hour.
Neither taxi zone fares nor app fares include a tip. Elly8.net fares include standard gratuity, taxes, the chauffeur and meet and greet; tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The full taxi zone list is in our YVR taxi rates guide.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from YVR to downtown Vancouver?
YVR's published zone fare to the Canada Place and downtown zone is C$46, including the C$4 passenger load charge, and the tip is extra. The zone fares are set by the Passenger Transportation Board and do not change with demand. Trips to addresses outside the zones run on the meter plus the C$4 charge.
Where do I find a taxi at YVR?
At the taxi stands on International Arrivals Level 2 and Domestic Arrivals Level 2. Taxis are first come, first served, and drivers are not allowed to pick up outside the stands. At the South Terminal the stand is outside the building, served by Richmond Taxi, Garden City Cabs and Kimber Cabs.
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi from YVR?
It depends on the moment. Uber and Lyft use dynamic pricing, so at a quiet time the app fare may be below the C$46 downtown zone fare, and when many flights land together it may be above it. Check the app price against the zone fare before requesting.
When is a private car better than a taxi at YVR?
When you are travelling with children who need car seats, with a group or heavy luggage, on a tight schedule, very late at night, or to a destination outside the taxi zones such as Whistler or the North Shore. Elly8.net fares start at US$110 to downtown, fixed and all-in.
Is the taxi fare to YVR also a flat rate?
No. YVR's zone fares apply to trips from the airport; trips to YVR run on the meter, except the Board's flat fare of C$42 from the Canada Place cruise terminal on posted cruise ship days. Elly8.net airport fares are the same fixed price in both directions.
