An IAD car service pickup with Elly8.net works the same way on every flight: the chauffeur tracks your landing, waits inside the Main Terminal at baggage claim with a name board, helps with bags and walks you out to the car. The price is fixed before you fly, from US$255 to downtown DC in a Business Sedan to US$665 in an Executive Sprinter, and it includes the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet.

What varies is the time between touchdown and that handshake. Dulles is a big airport with midfield concourses, an underground train and a customs hall that can be quick or slow. This guide follows a real arrival from the aircraft door to the car door, explains how waiting is handled when things run late, and sets out what each vehicle carries. If you want the cost comparison with the Metro, taxi and app rides, read our companion post on Dulles to DC by private car.

How does an IAD car service pickup work?

Your chauffeur tracks the flight, then waits inside the Main Terminal on the Arrivals level at baggage claim with a name board. Domestic passengers arrive there by AeroTrain; international passengers after US Customs. The chauffeur helps with bags and walks you to the car. Complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing.

You receive the chauffeur's name and contact details before you land. If your phone is on as you taxi in, a message to the chauffeur or the 24/7 desk lets them know which carousel you are heading for.

See Washington, DC prices and reserve

Step 1: from the aircraft to the Main Terminal

Dulles gates sit on midfield concourses, away from the Main Terminal where baggage claim and the exits are. How you get across depends on where you flew from.

Domestic arrivals. Most domestic passengers ride AeroTrain, the automated underground train that, according to Dulles airport, moves passengers between the Terminal and the midfield gates, with less than two minutes between stations. Allow a few extra minutes at peak times for the walk from the gate and the wait on the platform.

International arrivals. Passengers on most international flights do not ride AeroTrain, because they must clear US Customs first. The airport's FAQ says passengers are transported to US Customs and Border Protection within 10 to 15 minutes of deplaning, that processing times vary and are longer at peak periods, and that most travellers complete the process in less than an hour. Customs is in the Terminal Building, on the Arrivals Level at baggage claim near Baggage Claim 14, and a Travelers Aid information desk sits near the exit of the International Arrivals Hall.

Step 2: where the chauffeur meets you

With meet and greet, the chauffeur stands inside the Main Terminal on the Arrivals level, in the baggage claim area, holding a sign with the name you gave at booking. For international flights that is close to the International Arrivals Hall exit; for domestic flights, near the carousel listed for your flight. You do not go outside to look for the car.

This matters at Dulles because the airport is strict about who can collect passengers. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority authorises only permitted sedan and limousine services, requires pre-arranged reservations for pickup, and states that its regulations prohibit solicitation of anyone at the airport. Its advice is simple: do not accept rides from drivers offering service outside a pre-arranged reservation or ride app. A chauffeur holding your name, whose details you already have, is the pre-arranged reservation the airport describes.

For comparison, the other options use the outside curbs. Uber and Lyft load on the third curb on the ground level outside baggage claim, through Doors 2, 4 or 6, in zones 3A to 3H assigned by the app, according to the Dulles ground transportation page. Washington Flyer taxis queue down the ramp from Doors 2 or 6. Private cars collecting friends or family use the Arrivals level curb outside the Main Terminal.

Step 3: the walk to the car

Once you have your bags, the chauffeur walks you to the vehicle, which is parked rather than waiting at the arrivals curb. It is a short walk with help on the bags; for anyone with limited mobility, mention it at booking and the chauffeur will plan the shortest route.

Child seats, fitted before your flight lands, are available on request. Give the ages and the number of children when you book.

Wait times: what happens when the flight runs late

Every Elly8.net airport pickup is flight-tracked, so the chauffeur works to your actual landing time, not the schedule. That handles the common cases without any action from you:

  • Early landing. The chauffeur is already watching the flight and adjusts.
  • Late landing. The pickup moves with the flight. You are not charged for the airline's delay in the air.
  • Slow customs. Complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing and covers a normal walk, baggage claim and customs. If the hall is unusually busy, message the 24/7 desk so the chauffeur knows you are still in line.
  • Missed connection or diversion. Tell the desk your new flight; the booking moves with you, and normal cancellation terms apply only if you cancel the ride itself.

Waiting beyond the included time is billed at cost, and it is shown separately on the receipt. In practice it is rare on domestic arrivals and most often comes from an unusually long customs queue.

What fits in each vehicle

Choosing the right vehicle is the simplest way to avoid trouble at the curb. Capacities are set by passengers and bags together:

VehiclePassengersBagsIAD to downtown DCIAD round trip
Business Sedanup to 3up to 2US$255US$485
Business SUVup to 6up to 6US$335US$640
First Class SUVup to 6up to 6US$410US$780
First Class Sedanup to 3up to 2US$450US$855
Executive Sprinterup to 12up to 12US$665US$1,265

Prices are per vehicle, fixed and all-in. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Two travellers with two large cases and two carry-ons are usually more comfortable in a Business SUV than a sedan. Golf bags, skis, strollers and wheelchairs should be noted at booking. The fleet page shows each class.

Flat rate vs the meter

The Dulles taxi concession, Washington Flyer, is metered. Its published rate card sets US$3.50 for the first quarter mile, US$0.54 for each additional quarter mile, waiting at US$24 an hour, US$1.50 for each additional passenger and a US$5 surcharge on trips to or from Dulles, with tolls added. The airport's estimated fares page puts a taxi to Washington, DC at about US$65 to US$73.

That is cheaper than a chauffeur, and for one traveller with light bags in daytime it is a reasonable choice. The meter, though, moves with traffic and with stopovers, and the tip is extra. An Elly8.net flat rate is agreed before you fly and covers gratuity and meet and greet, so the US$255 Business Sedan fare to downtown is what you pay, plus tolls at cost. For a family of five, a team with equipment or anyone heading straight to a meeting, a fixed price and a waiting chauffeur are usually worth the difference. Our chauffeur vs taxi page sets out the general case. The same logic applies to app rides: their prices are set when you request, which suits a flexible traveller and makes budgeting harder for anyone booking on behalf of others, such as an assistant or a travel manager.

Departing from IAD

For the outbound trip, the chauffeur collects you at your hotel, office or home and drops you at the Departures curb of the Main Terminal. Allow for the drive, the security line and the AeroTrain to the midfield gates, which international passengers also use on departure. A round trip IAD to downtown DC is US$485 in a Business Sedan, less than two one-way fares, and the same booking holds both legs.

Booking tips that make the pickup smoother

  1. Add the flight number, not just the arrival time. It is how the chauffeur tracks you.
  2. Use the name on the sign that the traveller will recognise, especially when an assistant books.
  3. Give a mobile number that works on arrival, including for international roaming.
  4. Choose the vehicle by bags, not just passengers.
  5. Mention child seats and accessibility needs at booking, not at the curb.
  6. For groups on several flights, send a manifest. We match vehicles to arrival clusters and confirm each traveller separately; see group transportation.

Corporate travellers can put every Dulles run on one monthly invoice with a corporate account, and delegations can be booked as one programme through our government and diplomatic transportation service. For teams of up to 12, our DC Sprinter van rental guide explains when one large vehicle beats several small ones.

If you are flying into Reagan National or BWI instead

Dulles is about 30 miles (48 km) from downtown, around 54 minutes on a clear road. Reagan National is about 4 miles (6 km) away and priced from US$125 in a Business Sedan; our guide to Reagan National Airport car service covers its two terminals. BWI is about 34 miles (54 km) north and priced from US$270 to downtown DC, or from US$135 to Baltimore's Inner Harbor on our Baltimore car service page.

Frequently asked questions

Where does my car service meet me at Dulles?

Inside the Main Terminal on the Arrivals level, in the baggage claim area, with a name board. International passengers are met after US Customs, near the International Arrivals Hall exit. You do not need to go to the app curb or the taxi queue; the chauffeur walks you to the car.

How long will the chauffeur wait at IAD?

The chauffeur tracks your flight and works to the actual landing time, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing. That covers a normal walk, baggage claim and customs. Waiting beyond the included time is billed at cost, and if customs is very slow, message the 24/7 desk.

How much is a car service from IAD to downtown DC?

A Business Sedan is US$255, a Business SUV US$335, a First Class SUV US$410, a First Class Sedan US$450 and an Executive Sprinter US$665, fixed and all-in. A round trip in a Business Sedan is US$485. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.

How long does customs take at Dulles?

The airport says passengers reach US Customs within 10 to 15 minutes of deplaning, that processing times vary and are longer at peak periods, and that most travellers finish in less than an hour. Your chauffeur's waiting starts after the tracked landing, so a normal customs wait is covered.

Can I get picked up by a driver who approaches me in the terminal?

No. The airport authority permits only authorised sedan and limousine services with pre-arranged reservations and prohibits solicitation. Accept a ride only from a pre-arranged chauffeur whose name and contact you have, or from an official ride app or the taxi queue.

Is a flat rate cheaper than the Dulles taxi?

Usually not for one person: the airport estimates a metered taxi to DC at about US$65 to US$73, plus tip. A flat rate costs more but is fixed in advance, includes gratuity and meet and greet, and suits families, groups, late arrivals and business schedules.
