Toronto to Kingston is about 278 km (173 mi) from Toronto Pearson to downtown Kingston, roughly three hours and 20 minutes on a clear Highway 401, and a little less from downtown Toronto. You can make the trip by chauffeured private car, by VIA Rail, by intercity coach, by Air Canada's Landline coach from Pearson to Kingston's airport, or by driving yourself. Each one suits a different traveller.

For one person starting near Union Station with a carry-on, the train is comfortable and hard to beat. For a family landing at Pearson with luggage, a group heading to a Kingston wedding, or a visitor who wants the Thousand Islands without a rental car, a private car is the simplest door-to-door option, at one fixed price for the vehicle: from US$565 in a business sedan from Pearson to downtown Kingston.

What is the best way to get from Toronto to Kingston?

For a solo traveller starting downtown, VIA Rail is usually best. Air Canada passengers can take the Landline coach from Pearson to YGK. A chauffeured car suits families, groups, heavy luggage and Pearson arrivals, at a fixed price per vehicle from US$565. Driving yourself suits a long stay with lots of local driving.

The road is simple: the 401 almost the whole way. What decides the choice is where you start, how much you are carrying, how many of you there are and what you want to do once you arrive.

The chauffeured car. Rides in Kingston are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. From Pearson, the chauffeur meets you inside arrivals at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 with a name board after baggage and customs, the flight is tracked, and there is complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. From a downtown Toronto hotel or home, enter the address in the booker for a fixed price.

VIA Rail. Visit Kingston notes multiple daily VIA Rail departures and arrivals at Kingston, with connections to Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. The Kingston station is at 1800 John Counter Boulevard, north of downtown, with a taxi queue at the front and Kingston Transit Route 16 to downtown. From Pearson, the train means first reaching Union Station; the UP Express adult fare is CA$12.35, and a group pass for three is CA$25.

Intercity coaches. Visit Kingston lists several coach operators between Toronto and Kingston, with stops including Division Street and Union Street. A coach is usually the lowest fare; the trade-offs are a timetable and the trip to and from the stops.

Landline. Air Canada's Landline motorcoach links Pearson and Kingston Airport (YGK), with four non-stop round trips a day from 1 May 2026, booked as part of an Air Canada itinerary. It is efficient for a connecting passenger; from YGK you still need the last 11 km into town. Our Kingston airport limo guide explains that pickup.

Driving yourself. Straightforward if you are comfortable on the 401. From the highway, take the Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard exit (number 615) and head about 6 km (4 mi) south to the lake and downtown. Our chauffeur vs renting a car page sets out the trade-offs for visitors.

Every price is fixed, all-in and per vehicle: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost; the 401 itself has no tolls, and the 407 is used only if you ask for it. The Pearson fare is the same in either direction, so a Sunday return to the airport costs the same as the Friday trip out.

Because the price is per vehicle, the arithmetic favours groups. A Business SUV at US$735 shared by four people is about US$184 each, and an Executive Sprinter at US$1,470 shared by 12 is about US$123 each; those divisions are for comparison only, as the booking is for the vehicle. Booking the round trip together saves on two one-way fares: US$1,075 in a sedan against US$1,130.

The drive, and where to stop

The route is east on the 401 past Oshawa, Port Hope, Cobourg, Belleville and Napanee. The Toronto end decides the day: the 401 through the city and Durham Region can slow at almost any hour, while east of Oshawa the road usually opens up. In winter, lake-effect weather along Lake Ontario can make the middle stretch slow.

ONroute, the provincial highway service centres, are open 24 hours a day on the 401. Eastbound toward Kingston they include Port Hope, Trenton South and Odessa, the last one just west of Kingston; westbound back toward Toronto there are Napanee, Trenton North and Newcastle. A rest stop is included on request, and the price does not change.

For the latest closures and conditions, Ontario 511 is the provincial source the desk checks before long runs. For a departure from Kingston to a Pearson flight, we work back from the flight time and the season and suggest a pickup with margin; on a three-hour drive, that margin is the reason to book ahead.

Arriving in Kingston: where the car drops you

The fixed Pearson fare is to downtown Kingston, where most visitors stay: the hotels around the harbour, Princess Street and Market Square put the arena, restaurants and the waterfront within a short walk. Queen's residences and campus buildings are a few minutes beyond, and the chauffeur follows any arrival instructions the university has issued for move-in or convocation. Hotels in the west end, near Highway 401, are the first stop off the highway and suit an early start back to Toronto.

For an address outside the core, such as a home in Amherstview, a cottage on the river or a venue east toward Gananoque, enter it in the booker for a fixed price for that address. The same applies to the return: a Sunday pickup at a wedding venue for a Pearson flight is priced to that venue, and the desk times it with the 401 and the airport in mind.

A Kingston day, by private car

A day trip from Toronto is long but possible: about six and a half hours of driving there and back leaves room for a short day in town. Most visitors stay at least one night, and the car can do more than the highway.

Downtown and the waterfront. Kingston's limestone downtown around Princess Street, Market Square and City Hall is compact and walkable. The chauffeur drops you at the start and collects you at the end.

Fort Henry. Fort Henry, run by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, overlooks the harbour from across the causeway. Visit Kingston notes that the LaSalle Causeway has full closures on select dates for marine navigation, so the desk checks the dates and plans the route.

Queen's University. A drive past the campus and the lakeshore is part of the private city highlights tour, from US$440 in a sedan.

The Thousand Islands. The signature trip from Kingston is east along the St. Lawrence to Gananoque and the island cruises, about 30 km away. Our six-hour package runs from US$610 in a Business Sedan to US$1,215 in an Executive Sprinter. Boat tickets, meals and admissions are separate, and cruises are a summer and early-autumn activity; the river drive is worth it in any season. See private city tours.

Event nights. Slush Puppie Place, downtown, hosts the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs and touring shows, with Riverdance 30 on 3 February 2027 on its calendar. The evening out and event night package starts at US$550. For a group, read our Kingston party bus guide.

Three trips that work well by private car

Queen's move-in weekend. Pearson to the residence with a student, two parents and a car-load of belongings in a Business SUV at US$735, or an Executive Sprinter for two families together. Add the residence's arrival instructions to the booking, and book early.

A waterfront wedding. Guests land at Pearson on different flights; a Sprinter collects the wedding party, sedans or SUVs cover family flights, and the couple has a First Class Sedan on the day. See wedding limousine service and group transportation.

A business visit. Pearson to a meeting in Kingston, a corporate roadshow day from US$990 for the programme, and the drive back for an evening flight, all on one corporate account invoice. Our city to city car service page explains how long runs are set up.

Who should take which

Take the train if you are starting near Union, travelling light and want to work on the way.

Take Landline if you are flying Air Canada into Pearson and your destination is easy to reach from YGK.

Take a coach if price is the only thing that matters and the stops suit you.

Drive yourself if you are staying a week, need a car every day and are comfortable with winter driving.

Book a private car if you are landing at Pearson with luggage or children (child seats on request), travelling as a group, going to a wedding, a campus move-in or a meeting, or simply want the three hours to be someone else's job. Once you are in Kingston, our Kingston taxi and rideshare guide covers getting around town. From Kingston, Ottawa is the next city north-east, and Mont-Tremblant lies beyond Montreal.

For repeat travellers, such as faculty, consultants and families with a student at Queen's, the desk keeps traveller profiles, so the next Pearson to Kingston booking needs only the date and flight number.

From Toronto Pearson to downtown Kingston it is about 278 km (173 mi), roughly 201 minutes on a clear Highway 401. On weekday afternoons, before long weekends and in winter weather, three and a half to four hours is realistic. The fixed fare does not change with traffic, and rest stops are on request.

How much is a private car from Toronto to Kingston?

From Pearson to downtown Kingston, a fixed, all-in Business Sedan is US$565, a Business SUV US$735, a First Class Sedan US$990 and an Executive Sprinter US$1,470. A sedan round trip is US$1,075. For a downtown Toronto start, enter the address in the booker for a fixed price per vehicle.

Is the train faster than driving to Kingston?

For a traveller starting near Union Station, VIA Rail is comparable and lets you work on the way. From Pearson it is slower, because you first take the UP Express to Union, and at Kingston the station is north of downtown. For door-to-door travel with luggage, the private car is usually quicker overall.

Can we stop on the way?

Yes. A rest stop is included on request, and the ONroute service centres on the 401, including Port Hope, Trenton South and Odessa eastbound, are open 24 hours. Tell us if you want a longer stop, for example lunch in Prince Edward County, and the desk prices the trip with the stop included.

Can you drive us from Kingston to the Thousand Islands?

Yes. The six-hour Thousand Islands day trip starts at US$610 in a Business Sedan and US$1,215 in an Executive Sprinter, all-in. The chauffeur drives along the St. Lawrence, waits while you take a cruise from Gananoque and brings you back to Kingston. Boat tickets and meals are separate.

Is there a toll on the way to Kingston?

Not on the usual route. The 401 has no tolls. If you ask the chauffeur to use Highway 407 through the Toronto area to avoid traffic, its tolls are billed at cost, as are any parking charges. Nothing else is added to the fixed fare, whatever the traffic.
