Arriving at OGG, step by step
1. The agriculture declaration. Hawaii protects its farms and forests from imported pests. According to the airport's agriculture inspection page, passengers arriving with plants, animals or any agricultural materials must declare them on the Agricultural Declaration Form handed out on the flight, and a digital form is available for select flights. Fill it in before landing; it saves time later.
2. From the gate to baggage claim. The arrivals page says passengers arrive on the second level of the Overseas Terminal and the ground level of the Commuter Terminal. Baggage claim is on the ground level: from the gate area, take the escalator or elevator down and turn right.
3. Baggage claim and the inspectors. Plant quarantine inspectors are stationed in the baggage claim area to examine agricultural items. If you have declared something, this is where it is checked.

Three rules of thumb. A couple with two cases fits a sedan. A family of four, or anyone with golf bags, should book an SUV. Be clear-eyed about the comparison: for a couple with light bags landing at midday, the taxi is the better value. Book the round trip together. It costs less than two singles: US$515 in a Business Sedan instead of US$540.
Plan the departure around the agriculture inspection. The airport says that passengers flying to the mainland must have their baggage pre-inspected by the US Department of Agriculture, with inspection stations for checked bags in front of or at the airline check-in counters, and carry-on items inspected at security. From Kaanapali we usually suggest leaving at least 3 hours before a mainland flight.
Use Kapalua Airport for inter-island hops. West Maui has a small commuter airport. According to the state's Kapalua Airport page, JHM sits on the west side of the island near the Kaanapali and Lahaina resort areas and is served by commuter planes. If you are arriving on a small inter-island carrier, a JHM pickup is a much shorter ride to West Maui; enter it in the web booker with your flight number.
Add the island days at the same time.
