The drive from Kahului Airport (OGG) to Lahaina is about 40 km (25 mi), roughly 47 minutes on a clear road and often an hour or more in the afternoon. With a pre-booked private car, your flight is tracked, your chauffeur is waiting in baggage claim with a name board, and the price is fixed before you fly: Elly8.net publishes OGG to Kaanapali, a few miles further up the same coast, from US$270 in a business sedan to US$705 in an Executive Sprinter, and quotes any Lahaina address as a fixed, all-in fare in the web booker.

Lahaina is also a town still rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire, and that changes how a transfer is planned. Rides in Maui are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. This guide follows the trip in order, from the gate to your West Maui door, and explains what is different about Lahaina this year.

How long is the drive from Maui airport to Lahaina, and what does it cost?

Kahului Airport to Lahaina is about 40 km (25 mi), roughly 47 minutes on a clear road and often over an hour in the afternoon. The airport estimates a taxi at US$78. Elly8.net quotes Lahaina addresses as a fixed, all-in fare in the web booker; the published OGG to Kaanapali fare runs from US$270 to US$705 per vehicle.

The Kaanapali fare is the useful benchmark because it is the published route for West Maui. On the Maui car service page, OGG to Kaanapali is US$270 in a business sedan, US$355 in a business SUV, US$435 in a first class SUV, US$475 in a first class sedan and US$705 in an Executive Sprinter. Each price includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost, and Maui has no toll roads.

The price is per vehicle, not per person. A family of five in a business SUV pays one fare for the car, and a wedding party of twelve in a Sprinter pays one fare for the Sprinter. For a Lahaina address, enter it in the web booker and the fixed price appears before you pay.

Step by step: from the aircraft door to the car

Before you fly. When you book, give the desk three things: your flight number, the exact Lahaina or West Maui address (with any gate code or check-in notes from your host), and an honest count of passengers and bags, including surfboards, golf clubs and car seats. The flight number lets the desk track your aircraft so an early arrival or a delay moves the pickup automatically.

On the plane. Hawaii's Department of Agriculture requires arriving passengers with plants, animals or other agricultural items to declare them, using the declaration form handed out on flights to Hawaii or the digital version on select flights, according to the OGG agriculture inspection page. Plant quarantine inspectors are stationed in the baggage claim area.

Walking off. Passengers arrive on the second level of the overseas terminal and the ground level of the commuter terminal. Baggage claim is on the ground level: as you come down from the gate area by escalator or elevator, turn right, as the airport's arrivals and baggage claim page describes.

Meeting your chauffeur. Your chauffeur waits in baggage claim holding a name board. You get complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, which covers the usual wait for checked bags and the oversize belt where surfboards and golf bags come out. If you cannot see the name board, call the 24/7 desk number in your confirmation email rather than heading outside.

To the car. You walk out together with the bags. At OGG, pre-arranged pickups are made by companies holding an airport permit for that service; the airport publishes its list of pre-arranged ground transportation permittees.

Which vehicle fits the group and the bags

Bags decide the vehicle more often than passengers do. Capacities below are from the Elly8.net fleet page; the fares are the published OGG to Kaanapali prices, the closest published West Maui route.

Two cases and two carry-ons fill a sedan; a family's week of luggage and a stroller needs the SUV; a wedding group with garment bags fits in the Sprinter. Our airport transfers page explains how meet and greet, waiting and bag counts work across every city.

The road west: what the drive actually looks like

From the airport, the route crosses the flat central isthmus of the island, passes Maalaea on the south coast and then follows the Honoapiilani Highway along the West Maui shoreline into Lahaina. On a clear road the whole run is about 47 minutes. The coast section is beautiful, and it is also the one main road in and out of West Maui, so an accident or roadworks can slow everything behind it.

Three things make the timing vary:

  • Afternoon traffic. Many mainland flights land in the afternoon, which is when the road west is busiest. Allow an hour or more.
  • Roadworks and incidents. With few practical alternatives on the coast, a single lane closure is felt by every car. The desk watches conditions and your chauffeur will tell you if the drive is running long.
  • Where in Lahaina you are going. Lahaina covers more than the historic town. Addresses south of town, in the town itself and up toward Kaanapali are different drives, which is why the booker prices the exact address.

After a late-evening landing, the drive is usually close to the clear-road time, and a car already waiting matters more than speed.

Lahaina today: what changes for a drop-off

Lahaina is a community first, and visitors are asked to treat it that way. The County of Maui publishes current access and parking rules on its Maui Recovers Lahaina harbor access page. As of this writing, it says:

  • Pier access at Lahaina Small Boat Harbor has resumed for daytime use only, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and only operators holding state permits may run trips from the harbour.
  • Visitors using the harbour should park in the County lot at 116 Prison Street, where tour operators meet them and escort them to the harbour. Free three-hour parking is offered in that lot and in the County lot off 500 Front Street.
  • Fifteen-minute active loading and unloading zones are allowed along Wharf Street, while Canal, Wharf and Hotel streets are open for driving only, with no parking.
  • Several areas remain closed and fenced, including Banyan Tree Park and the old courthouse, and the public is asked to stay on the signed pedestrian route and off private property.

For a booking, that means a few practical things. Your chauffeur uses open roads and follows the County's current rules. We do not run sightseeing drives through the burn zone. If you have a harbour tour, send the desk the operator's meeting instructions so the drop-off matches them, usually at the Prison Street lot. And if you are staying in a rental home or condo in or near Lahaina, send any access notes from your host, because a few streets remain closed while others reopen in stages.

There are signs of the town coming back, and supporting businesses that are open is one of the most useful things a visitor can do. The County has announced that Ulu o Lele, an interim marketplace for local businesses on the former Outlets of Maui site, at the corner of Wainee and Papalaua streets, holds a free public grand opening on November 10, 2026, from 1 p.m. The chauffeur can drop you close by and collect you at an agreed time.

Flat rate vs the meter: taxi, shuttle, bus or private car

Kahului is unusual in that the airport itself publishes taxi estimates. Its taxicab page lists about US$78 to Lahaina and US$87 to Kaanapali, with a metered rate of US$3.00 per mile, and notes that these are guides, not guaranteed. Taxis wait in front of the baggage claim area.

Elly8.net private carfixed in the web booker; Kaanapali from US$270Tracked flight, chauffeur in baggage claim, one fixed priceFamilies, groups, late arrivals, fixed budgets

The honest reading is that a taxi to Lahaina is cheaper than a pre-booked sedan, often by a wide margin, and for a couple with two bags landing at midday it is the better value. The shared shuttle counter, which the airport says operates in baggage claim from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with service to West Maui properties including Lahaina, Kaanapali and Napili, suits a solo traveller who is not in a hurry. The Maui Bus routes that serve the airport allow one medium bag that fits under the seat or on your lap, so they are not a realistic choice with holiday luggage.

A private car wins when the trip has more moving parts: children who need seats, an SUV's worth of bags, a late landing, a wedding timeline, or a budget that has to be fixed in advance. Our chauffeur vs taxi guide sets the trade-offs out, and the Maui taxi guide in this series lists every published airport estimate.

If you are weighing a rental car, remember that you will collect it after the bags, drive the coast road after a long flight and then look for parking in Lahaina under the County's current rules. Our chauffeur vs renting a car page covers that choice.

Going back to the airport

The fare is the same fixed price in either direction, so the return to OGG costs what the arrival did. Your chauffeur collects you at the door and drops you at the departures curb.

Leave plenty of time. From Lahaina, we suggest leaving about 3 hours before a mainland departure. The drive is close to an hour and can stretch on the coast road, and checked bags going to the mainland pass a US Department of Agriculture inspection at or in front of the airline counters before check-in, according to the airport. For an inter-island flight, a little less time is usually enough, but check your airline's advice.

Flying into Kapalua instead

West Maui has a small second airport. Kapalua Airport (JHM), on the state's Kapalua Airport page, serves commuter flights. If you are hopping over from another island on a small carrier, JHM is only about 7.5 km (4.7 mi) from Kaanapali, a much shorter ride to Lahaina than the drive from Kahului. Enter JHM and your flight number in the web booker for a fixed price.

Booking the transfer

  1. Enter OGG (or JHM) with your flight number and your Lahaina address, in the web booker or from the price list.
  2. Choose the vehicle by passengers and bags.
  3. Press Reserve now or confirm in the booker. Confirmation arrives by email, and your chauffeur's details follow before pickup.

Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card. Travel agents can book through a travel agent account.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a private car from Maui airport to Lahaina?

Elly8.net quotes Lahaina addresses as a fixed, all-in fare in the web booker. For comparison, the published OGG to Kaanapali fare, a few miles further along the same coast, is US$270 in a business sedan, US$355 in a business SUV and US$705 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. The airport estimates a taxi to Lahaina at about US$78.

How long does the drive take?

About 40 km (25 mi), roughly 47 minutes on a clear road. In the afternoon, when many mainland flights land, allow an hour or more. The coast road is the one main route into West Maui, so an incident or roadworks can add time, and the desk keeps an eye on conditions.

Where will my chauffeur meet me at Kahului?

In baggage claim, on the ground level, holding a name board. Baggage claim is to the right as you come down from the gates. The desk tracks your flight, and you get complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, which covers the wait for surfboards and golf bags at the oversize belt.

Can you drop us in Lahaina town?

Yes, on open roads and following the County of Maui's current rules. For harbour tours, visitors are asked to park at the Prison Street lot and meet their operator there, and some streets allow driving but no parking. Send the desk your tour or host instructions and the drop-off will match them.

Is a taxi cheaper than a private car to Lahaina?

Usually, yes. The airport's estimate of about US$78 is well below a pre-booked sedan, and for one or two travellers with light bags the taxi is good value. A private car makes sense for families needing child seats, groups and luggage, late arrivals, weddings, or when the cost must be fixed before you travel.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Nothing changes on your side. The desk tracks the flight and moves the pickup to the actual landing, and complimentary waiting starts from the tracked landing time. The fixed fare stays the same. If a delay pushes you to another day, contact the desk, and the cancellation terms apply only if you cancel the booking.
