For a short daytime hop in Jacksonville, downtown to San Marco or Riverside to a restaurant, a taxi or an app ride is usually the cheapest door-to-door option, and the JTA bus is cheaper still at US$1.75. The calculation changes after dark at the beaches, on game days at EverBank Stadium, and for any day with several stops, when waits lengthen and app prices rise with demand. That is when a pre-booked car, from US$95 an hour in a Business Sedan with a 3-hour minimum, starts to make sense.
Jacksonville covers a great deal of ground, and that shapes everything about getting around it. Downtown, the beaches, the Southside and Ponte Vedra are separate drives, not neighbourhoods a few blocks apart. This post explains how taxis and app rides work here, what is published and what is not, and how to pick the right option for the trip in front of you.
Is a taxi or a rideshare cheaper in Jacksonville?
Neither has a published flat fare across Jacksonville. Taxis charge by the meter for the vehicle, regardless of how many people ride; app rides quote a price at request that rises with demand. For one or two people on a short daytime trip either is usually cheaper than a booked car. JTA buses cost US$1.75.
The honest answer depends on the hour and the place. A quiet weekday afternoon downtown favours the app or a taxi. A Saturday night at Jacksonville Beach, or the hour after a game or a concert, favours whatever you arranged before you went out.

How Jacksonville taxis work
Outside the airport and the big hotels, plan to book a Jacksonville taxi by phone or app rather than expecting to flag one down on a quiet street. At Jacksonville International Airport, the airport's ground transportation page sends arriving passengers to the Taxi, Limousine and Shared-Ride Booths on the Lower Level outside Baggage Claim, with no reservation needed.
The airport's own Commercial Ground Transportation Policy defines a taxi as a metered vehicle whose fare is based on the use of the vehicle without regard to the number of passengers carried. In practice that means four friends sharing a cab pay the same meter as one person, which makes a taxi good value for small groups on short trips.
What we could not find is a published table of Jacksonville taxi rates on an official city or airport source, so we are not going to quote one. Ask the dispatcher or driver for an estimate before you set off, especially for a long run to the beaches or Ponte Vedra.
How app rides work here
Uber and Lyft operate across Jacksonville under Florida's statewide law for transportation network companies, section 627.748 of the Florida Statutes, which the airport's policy also references. The app quotes a price when you request, and that price moves with demand. Neither company publishes typical Jacksonville wait times, and we will not invent them.
What is predictable is where waits stretch:
- Late at night at the beaches. Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach are a long drive from where many drivers spend the evening, so pickups after midnight can take a while.
- After a big event. When a game, a concert at the arena or a festival lets out, thousands of people request at once, and prices rise accordingly.
- Far-flung pickups. A rental home in Ponte Vedra or a resort on Amelia Island may simply have fewer drivers nearby.
- Early mornings. A 5 a.m. ride to the airport is usually fine, but it is the trip people least want to leave to chance.
At JAX, app pickups are on the Lower Arrival Curb, with signs at Poles 1 and 2, and the airport notes that an airport fee applies to pickups. App drop-offs for departures use the Upper Departure Curb only.
The JTA options that beat both
For some trips, public transport is the right answer, and the price is hard to argue with. The Jacksonville Transportation Authority charges a regular fare of US$1.75, including the First Coast Flyer rapid routes, with exact change needed for cash. Its route list includes a Beaches and Town Center route, which can work for a daytime trip to the coast if you are not carrying much.
On football Sundays, JTA's Gameday Xpress is the standout. You park in a JTA lot and ride to and from EverBank Stadium. JTA lists two downtown lots, including the Kings Avenue Parking Garage, and suburban lots at the beaches and on the Northside. Passes are cashless, bought in the MyJTA app before the game, and are priced round trip, per person, with parking included: US$10 for a single game from a downtown lot and US$15 from a suburban lot.
If you have a car and a small group, that is excellent value, and we would point you to it before selling you anything.
Game days and the stadium rebuild
The Jaguars play at EverBank Stadium, which is being rebuilt in stages. According to the Jaguars' Stadium of the Future page, the team plays its 2026 home games in Jacksonville with reduced capacity, moves its 2027 home games to Camping World Stadium in Orlando, and the renovated stadium is scheduled to be complete in August 2028.
For the rest of the 2026 season, game days downtown still mean heavy traffic and closures around the stadium district. A taxi or app ride home can be slow and expensive in the first hour after the final whistle. A booked car with an agreed pickup point away from the tightest blocks avoids that; our sports event transportation page explains how chauffeurs stage on game days. For 2027, when home games move to Orlando, a round trip is a full day out, and our Orlando car service page or a one-way city-to-city car service covers it.

When a booked car is the better buy
The case for a chauffeur in Jacksonville is mostly about distance and timing, not luxury.
Nights out with a return trip. The evening out and event night package covers five hours with the chauffeur waiting: US$475 in a Business Sedan, US$600 in a Business SUV, US$725 in a First Class SUV, US$775 in a First Class Sedan and US$950 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. The city's main venues, from VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena to the performing arts centre, publish their calendars on jaxevents.com. See our event transportation page.
Multi-stop days. By the hour, as directed, costs US$95 in a Business Sedan, US$120 in a Business SUV, US$145 in a First Class SUV, US$155 in a First Class Sedan and US$190 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. The car waits between stops, which is the thing taxis and apps cannot do without the meter running or a new request each time. Our hourly chauffeur page has the details.
Business days. A corporate roadshow day is fixed at US$855 in a Business Sedan up to US$1,710 in an Executive Sprinter for ten hours, billed to a corporate account with monthly invoicing if you need it.
Medical appointments. Jacksonville's large medical sector brings patients and families who need a calm, door-to-door ride with help with bags and no surprises in the fare. Tell the desk about mobility needs at booking.
Families. Child seats are available on request and fitted before pickup, which no taxi or app can promise.
Rides in Jacksonville are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. For a wider comparison, see chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Long runs: St. Augustine, Amelia Island and Ponte Vedra
The trips where the difference between a meter and a fixed price matters most are the long ones. St. Augustine, which its tourism board, Florida's Historic Coast, calls the nation's oldest city, is a popular day out from Jacksonville. So are the resort hotels of Amelia Island to the north and the golf and beach clubs of Ponte Vedra to the south.
A taxi or an app ride can get you there, but the return is the problem. Once you are in the historic district of St. Augustine or on Amelia Island in the late afternoon, you are relying on finding a ride back on the spot, at whatever the app is charging at that moment. If several of you are travelling, two app cars may be needed, each priced separately.
The Elly8.net six-hour St. Augustine day trip covers the drive down, the time you spend walking the old streets and the drive back, with the chauffeur waiting: US$525 in a Business Sedan, US$665 in a Business SUV, US$805 in a First Class SUV, US$860 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,050 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. For Amelia Island or Ponte Vedra, enter the address in the web booker for a fixed one-way or round-trip price, or book hourly if you want the car to stay. Tournament week at TPC Sawgrass in March and The Amelia concours in early March are the two weeks to book furthest ahead, because chauffeured SUVs sell out.
Arriving at JAX instead?
If your question is really about getting from the airport into town, our JAX airport taxi vs Uber vs private car guide walks through the curb, the booths and the fixed fares, and Is the Jacksonville airport shuttle worth it? covers the shared vans, hotel shuttles and the bus. The fixed Elly8.net fare from JAX to downtown is US$165 in a Business Sedan up to US$430 in an Executive Sprinter, the same price in either direction.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi in Jacksonville?
Jacksonville taxis run on the meter, and we could not find an official published rate table to quote. The fare is for the vehicle, not per passenger, so sharing a cab lowers the cost per person. Ask for an estimate before long trips such as downtown to the beaches or Ponte Vedra.
Are Uber and Lyft available everywhere in Jacksonville?
They operate across the city under Florida's statewide rideshare law. Availability is best in central areas and thinner at the beaches late at night, in outlying neighbourhoods and right after big events, when prices also rise. At JAX, app pickups are on the Lower Arrival Curb at Poles 1 and 2.
What is the cheapest way to get to a Jaguars game?
If you have a car, JTA's Gameday Xpress: park at a JTA lot and ride to EverBank Stadium for US$10 round trip per person from a downtown lot or US$15 from a suburban lot, parking included, bought in the MyJTA app before the game. In 2027, Jaguars home games move to Orlando.
When is a booked car better than a taxi or an app?
Book ahead for late nights at the beaches, game and concert nights, days with several stops, early flights, child seats, and trips to St. Augustine or Amelia Island. Elly8.net hourly service starts at US$95 an hour in a Business Sedan with a 3-hour minimum, and the evening out package at US$475 per vehicle.
Can you book an Elly8.net car by the hour for a night out?
Yes. Choose By the hour, as directed, with a 3-hour minimum, or the 5-hour evening out and event night package. The chauffeur drops you at each stop and waits nearby. Chauffeurs follow Florida rules on what may be carried in the vehicle, and the price includes taxes and standard gratuity.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original card, and the desk can change times within those windows.
