A private driver in Puerto Rico, booked through Elly8.net, is a chauffeur and vehicle at a fixed, all-in price from a San Juan base: from US$95 an hour in a Business Sedan (3-hour minimum), from US$700 for a full day, and from US$525 for the six-hour El Yunque rainforest day. Each price is per vehicle and includes the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity.
Puerto Rico rewards a driver more than most islands. Distances look short on the map, but the expressways around San Juan slow at rush hour, the best places are spread east and west of the capital, and some, such as El Yunque, have their own rules about who can drop off and pick up. This guide covers the rates, the routes, the right vehicle for each kind of day and the details that make the booking run smoothly.
How much does a private driver cost in Puerto Rico?
On Elly8.net, a private driver from San Juan costs US$95 an hour in a Business Sedan, US$120 in a Business SUV and US$190 in an Executive Sprinter (3-hour minimum). A full day starts at US$700, the six-hour El Yunque day at US$525 and a private city tour at US$380, all fixed and per vehicle.
Prices include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The full grid is on the San Juan fares panel.

Which booking to choose. Hourly suits a fixed errand or a dinner: three or four hours with the car waiting. The packages fix the price for a defined plan, so a long lunch does not change the cost. A full day suits trips out of the city, where the drive alone takes two or three hours of the day. For a single transfer, such as the airport to a resort in Dorado or Rio Grande, a one-way quote in the web booker is usually cheaper than an hourly booking.
Which vehicle fits which day
Seats and bags from the Elly8.net fleet page:
- Business Sedan (up to 3, 2 bags). A couple's day in Old San Juan, a business traveller's meetings, dinner in Condado.

- First Class Sedan or SUV (up to 3 or 6). S-Class or Escalade-type comfort for an anniversary, a VIP guest or an executive.
- Executive Sprinter (up to 12, 12 bags). Wedding parties, family reunions, incentive groups and anyone who wants the group in one vehicle.
The fleet page has the full list. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer (seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley).
Popular routes from San Juan
Clear-road routing estimates from Condado or the airport. Real times are longer at rush hour.
| Destination | From | Distance | Clear-road time | Airport taxi sheet, one way |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Old San Juan | SJU | 11 mi (18 km) | about 26 min | US$21 base |
| El Yunque, forest road in Rio Grande | Condado | about 29 mi (46 km) | about 50 min | Not listed |
| Rio Grande resort area | SJU | 19 mi (30 km) | about 31 min | US$65 to Rio Grande |
| Dorado | SJU | 25 mi (41 km) | about 44 min | US$62 |
| Fajardo | SJU | 31 mi (50 km) | about 52 min | US$82 |
| Ponce | SJU | 76 mi (122 km) | about 1 h 45 min | US$127 |
The taxi figures are base prices per trip from the airport's published fixed-rate sheet, before extras, tolls and tip. They are a fair benchmark for a one-way transfer; a private driver adds the waiting, the stops and the return.
East: El Yunque, Luquillo and Fajardo. The most popular day out. The forest sits in the Luquillo mountains east of the capital, with the main recreational corridor and the El Portal visitor center on PR-191 in Rio Grande. Luquillo's beach and Fajardo's marinas are further along the coast.
West: Dorado. A resort and golf area along the north coast, often booked as a transfer from SJU with a dinner or a round of golf.
South: Ponce. Across the mountains to Puerto Rico's southern coast. It is a long day, best booked as a full-day chauffeur.
The capital itself. Old San Juan's forts and streets, Condado, Santurce and the business district. The private city highlights tour covers the main sights with the car waiting; see private city tours.
El Yunque: the rules worth knowing
The El Yunque day is the signature San Juan package, and it is also the trip where planning matters most.
The US Forest Service says it continues to manage visitor capacity because of limited parking and disaster-recovery construction, and in May 2026 it proposed new recreation fees at the El Portal Rainforest Center and the La Mina Recreation Area. Check current alerts and trail conditions before your day.
The Forest Service also warns about getting there by app. Its alert on unauthorized transport says the recreational corridor and El Portal on PR-191 are not pickup points for rideshare apps: drivers can bring you as far as the entrance, but visitors are often unable to get a return pickup there and face a long walk. The Forest Service lists authorized transportation as private vehicles, rented vehicles, cabs with permits to operate in the forest, and authorized tourism and transportation providers, and urges visitors to ask before hiring any service.
How Elly8.net handles it: the El Yunque day is planned around the Forest Service's current access rules and conditions, and the desk confirms the day's arrangements, including where the vehicle waits and where you are collected, before you pay. Whoever you book, ask that question first. Plan an early start to beat the heat and the busiest hours, and add a beach stop at Luquillo or a late lunch on the way back.
Rental car, taxi, Uber or a private driver?
Rental car. The cheapest way to cover a lot of ground if you are comfortable driving on unfamiliar expressways and mountain roads and parking at busy beaches. See chauffeur vs car rental.
Taxis. Good value for short trips and fixed airport runs. The airport's sheet makes the one-way price clear before you get in.
Uber. The airport says Uber is currently the only rideshare company operating in Puerto Rico. Useful around San Juan; less useful for out-of-town days where a return pickup is uncertain, as the El Yunque alert shows.
A private driver. The best fit for families who would otherwise rent a large vehicle, groups who want to stay together, visitors who would rather not drive, a business day with several meetings, or a day with a long lunch and no designated driver. The chauffeur follows Puerto Rico's rules on alcohol in vehicles.
Booking tips
- Decide hourly or package. Under four hours with a fixed plan: hourly. A day out of the city: the El Yunque day or a full day.
- Send the full plan. Pickup, each stop, a lunch reservation and the return time. The desk checks whether the hours fit.
- Choose the vehicle by bags and gear. Beach chairs, golf clubs and coolers need an SUV.
- Add child seats with each child's age and weight.
- Start early for El Yunque and Ponce. The roads are quieter and the day is cooler.
- Book the airport separately. Arrivals with a tracked flight are a fixed transfer: SJU to Condado is US$120 to US$315. Our San Juan airport transfer guide covers every pickup point, and the airport to Condado guide the most common route.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% at 72 hours or less; 50% at 48 hours or less; 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card.
Three sample days with a driver
These use the published San Juan prices, per vehicle and all-in, before tolls and parking.
A family of five: rainforest and beach. A Business SUV with two child seats on the El Yunque day, US$665. Pickup in Condado early, the forest in the morning, a swim and lunch at Luquillo on the way back, home by mid-afternoon. As arithmetic for comparison only, that is US$133 a head across five; the price itself is per vehicle.
A couple: Old San Juan by day, dinner by night. The private city highlights tour in a First Class Sedan, US$620, covering the forts and the old city with the car waiting; later, a taxi or a short walk to dinner in Condado. If the dinner is across town, the evening out package in the same class is US$775.
Eight friends: a day out west and a night out. An Executive Sprinter on the full-day rate, US$1,400, for a round of golf or a beach club in Dorado, a late lunch and the drive back, with the group's gear in the back. For the night, the evening out package in the Sprinter is US$950.
Each of these could be done with rental cars and apps. What the driver changes is who plans the parking, who waits, and who drives home after lunch.
Business days, weddings and groups
Business. A corporate roadshow day starts at US$855 in a Business Sedan for a schedule of meetings across San Juan. Companies can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing, and NDAs are available on request; see corporate car service.
Weddings. A full-day chauffeur with the couple from US$700 and an Executive Sprinter running guest loops between hotel and venue. See wedding limousine.
Groups and cruise passengers. A Sprinter for a pre-cruise day in Old San Juan with the luggage on board, then a drop at the pier gate. See cruise port transfers.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a private driver for a day in Puerto Rico?
A full-day chauffeur from San Juan starts at US$700 in a Business Sedan, US$885 in a Business SUV and US$1,400 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed per vehicle with taxes and standard gratuity included. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. The six-hour El Yunque day starts at US$525.
Can a private driver take us to El Yunque?
Yes, the El Yunque rainforest day is a six-hour package from US$525. The Forest Service manages visitor capacity and has rules on transportation in the forest, including that rideshare apps cannot pick up at El Portal or the recreational corridor. The desk confirms the day's arrangements around the current rules before you pay.
Is it better to rent a car in Puerto Rico?
For confident drivers covering a lot of ground on a budget, a rental can be cheaper. A private driver suits families who would need a large vehicle, groups, visitors who prefer not to drive mountain roads or park at busy beaches, and days that include a long lunch.
What is the minimum booking for a driver by the hour?
Three hours. Hourly rates start at US$95 in a Business Sedan, US$120 in a Business SUV and US$190 in an Executive Sprinter. For longer plans, the packages and the full-day rate are usually better value and keep the price fixed.
Can the driver pick us up from a cruise ship?
Yes. The chauffeur meets you at the agreed pier gate in Old San Juan with a name board. You can go straight to the airport or a hotel, or book a city tour or full day with the luggage in the vehicle before your flight.
Do you provide child seats in Puerto Rico?
Yes, on request. Give each child's age and weight when you book, and the seats are fitted before pickup. Families with seats and beach gear usually choose a Business SUV, which takes up to six passengers and six bags, coolers included.
